The Slow Life Project is a weekly podcast by psychologist, author and mindset mentor Lana Hall, covering how to find meaning, authentic confidence, and joy in life.
If you find yourself struggling with over-commitment, overthinking and overwhelm on a regular basis, and you'd love to change that, this is the podcast for you.
Ah, all good things must come to an end. In today’s episode:
🌱 What I’ve learnt from a year and a half of podcasting every week
🌱 Why I’m taking a break now
🌱 How to keep in touch with this work while I work on my next project!
Knowing when to switch directions is an art, not a science. Building a habit means ignoring the feeling of discomfort for long enough to get the habit established. However, once a habit is established, a new skill takes over – being able to listen to yourself so you know how to change direction, and create new priorities as your needs change, rather than getting stuck in an established routine! Ah, life: it’s always about balance in the end.

🌱 Why there are always at least three ways to solve a problem – and only one of them requires your effort!

🌱 How to simply and easily manifest more of what you actually want in your life (as well as more feelings of satisfaction and joy) by changing the way you interact with the opportunities and situations presented to you.
Knowing that you have a choice as to how to respond when faced with a problem is the first step to feeling more in control of your life, and creating the life you want to live. The ‘match the moment’ mantra is quick and simple way to remind yourself:
🌱 You are in control of where your attention goes
🌱 You can choose your thoughts and
🌱 In every moment, you have a choice as to how you show up, and the kind of person you want to be.
Being able to match the moment can transform your effectiveness, improve your ability to act rather than react, and helps you drop stress. Listen to the ep to learn more about how to use this powerful technique.

The easiest way to understand what vulnerability is, is that feels uncomfortable, and often is about doing the thing that’s the opposite of what you normally do. Not the opposite of every little thing – but changing those behaviours that are designed to protect you, yet somehow only seem to create more problems in the long run.
Eep! Why would you wan to do that? Well, in this episode we unpack:
🌱 Why getting vulnerable leads to more growth and connection
🌱 How to recognise which behaviours create walls around you, and
🌱 Ideas on how you can make it easier for yourself to practice vulnerability and show up as your true self.
Being vulnerable can feel super scary, but getting to show up as your true self is a great act of self love that leads to deeper connections and being seen and heard more fully. It’s worth the risk!

Don't you just love a cute little acronym to help explain who you are, and what makes other people tick?!
In this week’s podcast we’re unpacking a brain based, neuroscience backed model for working out how you, and other people, are influenced and get hurt, and ideas on how to help people feel safe, instead of threatened.
🌱 Understanding the five elements of the SCARF model
🌱 How to know which category you fall into
🌱 Ideas for making sure you treat people as they need to be treated so they can feel safe
SCARF is a great little tool for helping you to make sense of why you get hurt sometimes by little things that happen at home and work. After all, when you understand why something is affecting you, it loses a lot of its power over you.

In today’s fast paced, information filled, always on world, I can pretty much guarantee that – you need to rest more often!
In this week’s podcast:
🌱 Understanding what rest is really doing for you
🌱 Why resting isn’t actually ‘doing nothing’
🌱 Coming to terms with the idea that resting is actually the most productive thing you can do, and will help you to achieve more anyway.
Resting is the little known secret to living a satisfying life that is fun too. Start using the power of rest to enjoy your life more, as well as creating more effective action towards what you’re creating in your life!

When good things happen, what do you tell yourself? That it’s a fluke, or just the norm for you? Do you think that your successes are a result of who you are, or just random chance? The attribution style you have, and how you apply it, can shift your mood dramatically – whether what you’re facing is ultimately good for you, or not good for you.
It’s time to learn about attribution styles and how to best use them to your advantage.
In this week’s podcast:
🌱 What attribution styles are
🌱 The three elements of attribution: personal, pervasiveness and permanent
🌱 Changing your attribution style depending on whether the event your facing is positive or negative.
Understanding attribution styles and using them to your advantage can help minimise the impact of negative experiences and maximise the joy you get from positive experiences. It’s all part of mastering your mind to master your life!

Learn how to change how you feel about failure in this 20 minute podcast episode.
In this week’s podcast:
🌱 Why a fear of failure leads to being in the stress response and enjoying your life less
🌱 Overcoming a fear of failure by changing what failure means to you
🌱 Getting your brain to relax and not obsess about failure by accepting you may fail, and realising you can cope with that.

Within any workplace, or anywhere people get together, there’ll be some people you love, and some you just struggle to connect with. What can you do to improve your sense of connection and communication with people who are different to you?
Today’s podcast has three great strategies for you to try out that’ll help you connect more deeply with almost anyone. You’ll discover:
🌱 Why saying ‘yes’ before you go into a meeting can result in better outcomes – for both parties
🌱 How to look for similarities to encourage connection
🌱 How to empathise with someone – even if you don’t agree with what they’re saying (Super awesome psychologist technique!)
These are all amazing techniques that can really impact your ability to forge and maintain relationships. If you’re in any position where you need to connect and work with other people who may not share your values or interests, these powerful strategies can make all the difference.

I recently read ‘How to do nothing’ by Jenny Odell, which reminded me that when you’re feeling stuck, unsatisfied and restless (something I’ve definitely felt since returning from France!) it may be a better strategy to change what you’re focussing on, rather than thinking your whole life (or large parts of it) need to change before you’ll feel more content. Honestly, the best life will be a combination of both, but most people, myself included, tend to get overly focussed on the circumstances, and forget about the power of attention in determining our happiness.
The podcast episode covers:
🌱 Why it makes sense to put more time into focussing where your attention goes, and less into trying to change your circumstances.
🌱 What you need to do first to successfully be able to re-direct your attention.
🌱 Ideas on how you can re-focus your attention to create a more satisfying and enjoyable life for yourself.
If you’re currently feeling unhappy with your life, and have been working on changing the external world as a way of feeling better, then I’d encourage you to try changing where your focus goes instead. It’s actually a more powerful predictor of your mood than where you are in the world!

I hadn’t heard the term ‘job crafting’ until last week, but the core of job crafting aligns with both advice I give others, as well as advice I’ve been given, so I’m excited to discover it has a name, and a process!
Job crafting is three-pronged approach to help you to change how you feel about your work (whether that’s a job, or your own business) without actually needing to change much about what you do. If you’d like to feel more satisfied with how you earn your money, this episode is for you!
The podcast episode covers:
🌱 The three areas of your job that you can adjust to increase your satisfaction, and ideas on how to do this.
🌱 What Amy Wrzesniewski’s research into job crafting, showed and how she found that this process works for even the most restrictive jobs.
🌱 Applying this to other areas of your life to increase satisfaction there too!
If you’ve been feeling a bit flat at work, and sick of some of your responsibilities, then today’s episode will give you lots of great ideas on how you can feel invigorated and interested in your work again.

If your default mode is to wonder ‘what’s wrong with me?’ when you find yourself procrastinating (again!), today’s episode can really help you. In it, I share my own experiment in using curiosity and self-compassion when procrastinating, and how you can use what I found out, to better manage your own procrastination.
The podcast episode covers:
🌱 The importance of not criticising yourself, but instead asking ‘why’ and getting curious about procrastination.
🌱 What I found (and I think you will too!) about the real reasons you procrastinate.
🌱 How knowing the real reasons will free you from procrastination and allow you to take consistent action in the direction of your goals and dreams.
If you struggle with procrastination and know all the tips and tricks already, I think you’ll really benefit from this episode. Once you understand the true cause of your procrastination, and clear it, you’ll easily be able to use those tips and tricks that never worked for you before.

Ergh, commuting, what a waste of time, right? When podcasts came along, they helped a bit, but now you can learn to truly love your commute, by using it to lower stress levels, and feel more satisfied and happy with yourself day to day.
Here’s how: The podcast episode covers:
🌱 Using your commute as a mental break between work and home.
🌱 What you need to be doing (don’t worry, it’s easy!) to be lowering stress levels through commuting.
🌱 How to also use your commute to boost your confidence and self-esteem – who would’ve thought you could do that on a train trip or bus ride?
These commuting tips really are a game changer. I encourage you to try the ideas out, and see if they help you to feel less stressed and more satisfied (not many podcasts can manage that!).

During the last six months, I’ve only been working from home. And as a result, I noticed I was taking more micro-breaks – it just made sense to put on a load of washing, or grab a snack, whenever my brain needed a break. And then this week, I came across an article all about the benefits of micro breaks, and so it reminded me, I need to tell everyone about just how great these short breaks are, for your mental and physical health, as well as your productivity!
In this little episode, we’ll talk about:
🌱 The physical and mental health benefits of micro breaks

The desire to be productive is something I’ve felt, in varying degrees, throughout my life. It was low when we were overseas, and I knew that all I had to ‘do’ to be successful was absorb the experience, and it’s been highest when my confidence has been low, and when my children were small and it felt like there was always more to be done, particularly if I wanted to be a great mum, and still work on my career.
In this 23 minute episode, we’ll talk about:
🌱 How to identify when you’re moving from productive, into productivity anxiety
🌱 The problems that come up if this pattern become dominant in your life
🌱 How you can start to take action to bring your life back into balance, and do less busywork in favour of more time to the things that truly matter to you.
While challenging productivity anxiety can feel super uncomfortable at first, there are great rewards waiting for you if you do the work. More energy, more time to what matters to you, AND a greater sense of self-esteem. That sounds worth it, right?

Living overseas, this has been relatively easy! But can this idea help you live a more satisfying, fulfilling life when you’re stuck in the daily grind? I think it can!

I recently hit a milestone – podcasting for a year - and it caused me to stop and reflect on what I’d learnt, and how satisfying it was hitting this milestone.
When you’re caught in the hustle of doing, always looking forward towards the next thing, you can easily miss out on experiencing the joy that can come from achieving something that matters to you, and enjoying the moment and the experience. What a waste!
This episode aims to help you stop and appreciate yourself, and takes a look at what it takes to celebrate successes. In this 14 minute episode, you’ll uncover:
🌱 Why it’s so important to connect our success to our values, rather than an external achievement
🌱 How to celebrate success – it doesn’t need to be a big event!
🌱 Why focussing on the fact something is ‘done’ is more motivating than setting higher expectations for yourself
🌱 How easy it is to start using this technique to experience more confidence and motivation – even if you’re not working on a big goal at the moment!

“Remember, slow living is about mindset. Yes, that mindset is reflected in our actions and words and choices, but it starts with how you approach the world, not the world you find yourself in.
