Sophie Barton is a PhD student in the Hecht Lab of Harvard University. She is a founding member of the Canine Brains Project. Sophie is a neuroscientist and ethologist who is interested in dog evolution, neuroscience, and behavior. She is currently recruiting dogs from working breeds for her Working Dog Breeds Study. In this study, she is investigating what parts of the brain are involved in working dog behaviours, such as herding.

Natalie has spent almost her entire career in livestock farming having caught the bug at 11 while watching River Cottage and promptly obtaining an allotment and chickens! She has run a commercial flock, been a contract shepherd and worked as a relief milker and calf rearer with experience of every type of system from conservation grazing and calf-at-foot to zero grazing and flocks into the thousands! This episode was due! My experience with Tay that at 13 weeks old he showed me interest in wanting to herd cars and how I dealt with the situation, making sure that he never developed that behaviour in the first place!

Megan Wallace (CNWI and CCUI) started getting interested in dog training at the young age of 11, after being obsessed with dogs her whole life. At 12 years old, Megan's parents have her the opportunity to pick out her own dog to pursue her newfound interest in dog shows, and she decided on a Border Collie. Over the past two decades, she and her family have been involved in showing, training, breeding, and rescuing BCs. She now owns her own dog training business, NoCo Unleashed, where her main focus is teaching Control Unleashed and Nose Work. She currently owns 3 Border Collies, two rescue females, and a male down from the family's line, and a Rhodesian Ridgeback. They train in a variety of sports, focusing on Nose Work.

Join me for this very interesting chat with Lucy d'Auvergne, clinical animal behaviourist and owner of very complicated collies, where she tells us her life with difficult sensitive dogs and how scentwork came into her life and allowed her to research and create a program that she called Therapeutic Scentwork for anxious dogs that struggle with every day life.
“WHAT IS THERAPUTIC SCENTWORK? In therapeutic scentwork we’re using a dog’s natural abilities in a non-forced way to support their mental wellbeing. It’s about reducing stress and building optimism and confidence in a really natural way It differs from other forms of nose-work in that it’s less formally structured than scent detection, tracking or competitive scentwork. Confidence building can be a fantastic by-product of all types of nose-work – it all allows dogs to be more ‘dog’ in the most fundamental way… Therapeutic scentwork takes sniffing in a slightly different direction in that we are primarily using sniffing to support and nurture the emotional needs of our dogs in a completely dog-led, individual way, within a loose structure.”
