Matthew 5: 43-48

““You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

1. Be Loved, first.

Read, Reflect, Experiment with 1 John 4: 11-21

Reflection #1: Do you know you are loved by God? If not, why not? If so, how do you know? If it’s been a while, what’s been getting in the way or what do I need to let go of in order to let God’s love in?

Experiment #1: Be still. Spend a couple minutes in silence, making room for the Holy Spirit to reveal himself as the lover of your soul.

2. Be Prayerful.

“…to pray for an enemy is no small or easy step. The fact is that the last people in the world we want to pray for are the people we fear or hate or regard with disgust. Keep a list of the people you find it hard to pray for and then pray for them anyway. Do it as a religious duty.”

WINESKIN : GIVING
.
If we are truly serious about following the way of our Lord, if we are truly serious about curating a Christ-Centred community where Christ is Lord of all; and if we are serious about participating in the bringing of God’s future into our present then we need to talk about why we give and why we steward and share our possessions – the time, talent and the treasure – that the Lord has graced us with.
.
The use of money and possessions is addressed and utilised – in the gospels – directly and for illustrative and instructional purposes by Jesus, so much so that the only thing He speaks about more is the kingdom of God…
.
And in Acts 2 we catch a glimpse of God’s economic future breaking in to the early church as they practiced and participated in the economy of God in ways that didn’t separate or compartmentalise their religious or spiritual life from the rest of their real, everyday – waking and working life.
.
In fact it’s seems so clear that their spiritual life informed and formed their whole life – from the way they engaged in community, the way they worked, the way they managed their relationships and the way they stewarded, shared and gave of their possessions to those who were in need.
.
This kind of giving and sharing only happens because of the Spirit.
.
Acts 2:42-47 NIV“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. We are called to be a people who bring peace to the earth - but peace is more than simply 'making nice' or ensuring everyone is doing the 'right' thing.
Becoming peacemakers means following the example of Jesus who spoke out to expose what wasn't in alignment with love, mercy and humility.
At the same time, Jesus invited people to wholeness by reminding them of their core identity, who they were created to be as free sons and daughters.
Peacemaking for us is an action that must take place in community. As we come together to have challenging conversations, we bring mutual benefit to each other.
A gentle abrasion happens in life-giving conversation where the desire is for wholeness and restoration - this can happen when we get honest, but with humility and grace.
Together we smooth our sharp edges by living this way and we become a people who bring Glory to God in the way we love (in the hard stuff) and continue to grow mature in Christ and community, as we commit to becoming deeply formed disciples of Jesus.
"...never let ugly or hateful words come from your mouth, but instead let your words become beautiful gifts that encourage others; do this by speaking words of grace to help them." Ephesians 4:29 TPT

Beloved children of God don’t miss this: You are forgiven!
Jesus reveals the scandal that God loves because that is who God is. Confession doesn’t switch on God’s grace!
God’s ever-flowing grace is the context in which we can open to truth, and confess all that we would otherwise hope to hide.
Jesus’ whole ministry is doling out forgiveness - like fear, shame and secrecy are going out of fashion - and healing, light and love are breaking out.
So Look to Jesus and see:
There is nothing we can do to make God love us more.
There is nothing we can do to make God love us less.
For love is who Jesus reveals God to be.
Look to Jesus and see:
We don’t repent to be forgiven.
We are forgiven so now we can repent!
For in Christ there is no condemnation.
Look to Jesus and see:
Confession doesn’t change how God sees us. Confession changes how we see God.
For God is light and in God there is no un-Christ-like-ness
So let us therefore come boldly before the throne of grace,
that all we are might be soaked in the shower of God’s tender mercies and find grace to help in our time of need.

Last Sunday, Yiqian guided us on an exploration of the Scriptural narrative of God's partnership with humanity to bring them out of a cycle of chaos/sin/brokenness. In the waters of baptism and the hovering of the Spirit of God, we participate in both a personal and communal story of dying to death and embracing restored goodness. Jesus' baptism, life, death and resurrection became living, embodied proof (fulfilment) of the true relational story of God and Creation (righteousness) that we are all meant to participate in. And this story leads us towards a victorious, present-and-future, new life.
Whether or not you've been baptised, whatever your experience of baptism, this story is for you. God's Spirit has, is, and will always be hovering over your life, seeking your co-participation. Don't miss, minimalise, or misunderstand God's invitation to a baptised reality of life. Immerse yourself and your world in it. (pun-intended)

Do you struggle with the tension between the "good" things you want to do and the "bad" things you don't want to do but find yourself doing anyway?
God's gift of grace through Jesus means that we don't have to try and do "good" things. Instead, the Holy Spirit has been graciously given to us to work with us and in us so that we don't have to try and be "good" to do "good" things.
Rather as we seek daily to live with and in the Spirit. The Spirit transforms us into the fullness of who God created us to be. The Spirit makes us more like Jesus. The Spirit makes us "good".
"So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin."

Jesus offers each of us the unforced rhythms of grace which we can connect with to do life with Pace, Peace and Purpose. So why is finding peaceful rythms so difficult? How we view success, will determine how we experience it - harried and hurried, or freely and lightly.
When you have awareness of what is motivating your lens of success, you can begin to choosing to sidestep the striving and stress and connect with the internal compass of spirit, design and grace.
We don't have to look too far to see where these life giving rhythms are found, and what they look like...In Jesus we find the sustainable rhythms of life, spiritually, relationally and emotionally.
Choosing the Unforced Rhythms of Grace, means keeping in step with the pace, peace and purpose that Jesus offers us.

A guaranteed part of the Christian life – life in communion with Jesus and Jesus’ people – if we are living in pursuit of the one who calls us all to the other side is that you and I will experience pain and suffering in various forms and at various times and through various seasons.

Sometimes we must paddle – we must continue to make headway painfully, with the wind against us – knowing that even if Jesus doesn’t get in the boat He is still present with us in the storm!

We know too that Australia has not yet wrestled with the truth of our shared history, and has failed to establish treaties with its First Peoples. We are committed to deeply listening to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and walking together for justice, healing, and flourishing for all. We recognise Voice as an important step along the way to hearing and responding to the long-standing calls to deeply listen to the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the need to establish treaties, and the importance of national truth-telling. You, working alongside the Common Grace movement, have a crucial role to play in supporting the Uluru Statement from the Heart, and advocating for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament and for justice. To ensure the referendum on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament is successful, we will need to speak to our leaders, quell the doubts in our churches and in our communities, and show people the ways in which every step towards reconciliation is a step towards justice and the enrichment of every Australian. If our country does not come together in supporting a YES vote at the upcoming referendum on Voice, it will set our efforts for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander justice back decades. On Sunday, we read that Mark's good news is counter-cultural to the 'gospel' of Caesar.

Marks’ good news is about Jesus, whose prophets foretold would come to comfort (Isaiah) and liberate (Malachi / Elijah/ John).

Jesus (not Caesar) is God's incarnate, who comes not to the powerful elite or temple establishment but to those who experience wilderness and marginalisation.
In Jesus, the Kingdom of God is present, and those who come out of empires to follow Jesus are filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus, overcoming temptations (of empires) in the wilderness, calls all people to go out to the margins and follow him in living an alternative gospel of God's sabbath economy of non-violent liberation and reconciliation in the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20 charges the disciples to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything Jesus had commanded.
This is all well and good in theory but it still leaves us with the questions, how can we be people who 'go?' How can we be people of movement today?

Ps Keren Greenwood is the pastor of Vantage Point Churches outer east location and of Vantage Point Community; a foodbank program in multiple locations around Melbourne that gives people and families experiencing food insecurity and isolation access to groceries, fresh food and vegetables while providing space and opportunities for social cohesion and community participation.
Keren is what you might call “The real deal” or in the words of MC Hammer “too legit to quit” when it comes to being the hands and feet of Jesus!

Brooke is an Aboriginal Christian Leader from the Wakka Wakka peoples and CEO of Common Grace - an Australian Christian justice movement that exists to inspire and organise Australian Christians to think, speak and act like Jesus (and less like jerks) for a more just world!
Before stepping into the CEO role with Common Grace in Feb 2020 Brooke had been volunteering as their Aboriginal spokesperson and as the Coordinator of the Grasstree Gathering - which is a national, inter-denominational and non-denominational event which brings together emerging and established Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christian leaders from across Australia and from across denominations and churches with a vision to celebrate, encourage, equip and inspire an emerging generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christian Leaders.
Brooke works ecumenically; speaking on issues of Justice affecting Australia and sharing a message of Reconciliation as friendship.
Brooke has also co-written and written a number of theological papers over the last few years that have been presented in Australia and Internationally and is a founding board member of NAIITS Australia - an indigenous learning community - and is currently studying a Masters of Theology through NAIITS, in partnership with @whitley.college and the University of Divinity.
Brooke is a scholar of the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture and a much sought after speaker and writer who is a community pastor and advocate with a vision "to build an Australia built on truth, justice, love and hope"...
