Through the 1970s and 1980s, Mary Joe Frug was a well-respected and prominent law academic. As a part of the Critical Legal Studies movement, she looked to analyse the legal system from a feminist perspective. On the evening of April 4th 1991, the 49-year-old was walking to a convenience store in an upmarket neighbourhood in Cambridge, Massachusetts, when she was set upon and viciously stabbed to death. A man in his early twenties was seen fleeing from the scene but has never been identified. Investigators were baffled regarding a motive and could not determine if the slaying had been a random act or if Mary Joe had been specifically targeted. Several avenues continue to be explored by cold case detectives, including the possibility that the murder was connected to her work or private life.

Hannah Williams, a 78-year-old widow, lived with her daughter, Elizabeth, in an isolated cottage six miles from Cardiff. On the morning of Saturday November 10th 1900, Elizabeth walked to market to sell produce from their smallholding. Hannah stayed behind, busying herself with some household chores. When Elizabeth returned that afternoon she was met by neighbours on the road who informed her that Hannah was dead. This had not been due to natural causes or even an accident, but by bloody violence. Hannah had been bludgeoned with a coal hammer and her throat slashed while darning a sock in her own kitchen. Well over a century later Hannah's story and its many unanswered questions still resonate.

Abdur Rashid was a 46 year old Muslim spiritual teacher who came to the UK from Bangladesh in the late 1970s. Abdur lived and worked in London's East End and was known in the local community as a good man. In April 1988 Abdur was murdered with a sharp instrument and his body dumped in Epping Forest. The killer set the body alight, an act that is forbidden in Islam and one that is considered dishonorable. Police managed to piece together some clues but were at a loss as to the motive for such a cold blooded crime. The crime soon disappeared from the headlines as the investigation drew blanks.

Christina or Christine Bracken was a 39 year old nun, originally from Ireland, who in the later part of 1978 moved to Swansea, Wales, to begin a new chapter in her life. After 6 months in Wales Christina, who went by her religious name Sister Jacinta, appeared to have settled in well and seemed happy. Shortly after lunch on Saturday May 19th 1979 Sister Jacinta took a walk into the city centre to buy a birthday present for her mother. While there were a few sightings of Sister Jacinta that day (both confirmed and unconfirmed), she was never seen by anyone at the convent again and seemingly vanished into thin air. There are numerous theories and rumours about what happened to Sister Jacinta, including a startling piece of information that surfaced just a decade ago.

He had been murdered in a sexually motivated and sadistic attack. Just months later the murder investigation was scaled back and Kevin's killer has yet to be identified.
*Just a quick note to say I'm sorry I've only been doing one episode a month since April. Life has been hectic and I've had some health issues as well as some other commitments. Thank you all for continuing to listen.
I try and choose stories that are rarely covered by other podcasts and Kevin Mison's case is no exception. I have hope it won't be too late to find resolution to this 45 year unsolved crime.

Late on the evening of February 12th 1945, 55 year old Mary "Helen" Hoyles finished her shift at the American Red Cross Club on High Street in the centre of Southampton, and began the short walk home. Helen's journey should have taken just a quarter of an hour but she did not make it safely home.
Early the following morning Helen's half-naked body was found in a cul-de-sac near her lodgings on New Road. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled. A clue was found at the scene which made police think the case would be solved within a week, though this confidence proved misplaced.
Over the next couple of years several suspects cropped up in the investigation and the "clue" took detectives to mainland Europe in their search for the killer. In truth the culprit may have been closer to home.

German tourist Heidi Mnilk was on a two week trip to the UK. The 17 year old pharmaceutical apprentice was staying with an English family in West Wickham in south east London. On Sunday July 8th 1973 Heidi travelled to London with a friend to see the sights. Shortly before 5.00pm the pair boarded a train at Charing Cross Station to take them back to their accommodation. Heidi went to a non-smoking compartment and her friend to a carriage where smoking was permitted. Less than two minutes after the train passed London Bridge two young passengers heard screams and witnessed the neighbouring compartment's door fling open and the body of a young woman fall onto the tracks. Despite these passengers raising the alarm they were not taken seriously and it was a little while before the body of Heidi Mnilk was discovered. A post-mortem showed Heidi had been stabbed before her body was hurled from the train. The young passengers gave a detailed description of a man seen leaving Heidi's compartment and police scoured London for the suspect. Then, a few months later, information came to light suggesting a motive for the seemingly random crime.

Several people saw Kathy enroute but she never made it to her lessons that afternoon. A bloodhound tracked Kathy's scent to a spot within eyesight of the school. The only conclusion was that the little girl had been abducted by person or persons unknown. Since that day there has been no sign of Kathy.

On the night of the 22nd December Crispin went out with friends to celebrate the success of his album. In the early hours of the following morning, after separating from his friends, Crispin was found lying face down on the pavement. He had sustained a head injury and was in cardiac arrest. On a Spring day in 1991 the body of Tuula Lukkarinen was found in woods near the disused Hausjarvi gravel pits in Southern Finland. The 28 year old had gone missing the previous day after leaving the mental hospital where she was temporarily staying. It was a brutal slaying, with the killer displaying disturbing and sadistic tendencies. Two years later 40 year old Maarit Haantie disappeared in the same area during a night out with friends. She has never been seen since and the Finnish police believe she was murdered. Two earlier attacks on women have also been linked to these cases and investigators believe there is a connection, with one perpetrator being responsible for all the crimes. Over the past three decades, the small towns and forests of southern Finland have been the backdrop to the search for, a rarity in Finnish criminal history, a serial killer.

The body of Joan Maschek was found by her landlord on the evening of July 13th 1976. The 48 year old divorcee had been bludgeoned to death with a flat instrument inside her bedsit on Douglas Road, Nottingham. Police investigating the seemingly motiveless killing soon discovered that Joan herself was equally enigmatic. She was an eccentric character whom neighbours said had visitors at all times of the day and night. Nevertheless, they could find few individuals who knew Joan well, and those who did were not keen on making themselves known. The investigation would go on to focus on two separate men who police believed could hold vital information, but it was well over a decade later that the case suddenly moved in a new direction.

This week's episode is a little different. John guests on the excellent podcast Scottish Murders to examine the 1990 unresolved murder of Ann Heron.
This is part two. You can listen to part one by visiting the Scottish Murders podcast at Home - Scottish Murders or wherever you listen to your podcasts.
In part two we continue the story of Ann Heron’s murder with an arrest made in November 2005. This person was later released due to insufficient evidence. Despite various leads and multiple suspects, including Christopher Halliwell, sadly the case remains open. Durham Police and Ann’s family continue to seek information, hoping to solve a mystery that has persisted for decades. The case’s complexity is underscored by conflicting theories, a lack of definitive forensic evidence, and the emotional toll on the families involved. The search for justice continues, with the hope that new advances in forensic science will finally provide the answers needed to close the chapter on Ann Heron’s murder.

On the evening of Tuesday December 9th 1975, Hugh Watson enjoyed a pint and a game of dominoes at the Pen-y-Bryn Hotel bar in Llanrwst, North Wales. At 9.30pm the 77 year old grabbed his two walking sticks and set out back to his makeshift home in a stable on a nearby farm. Many people saw the well-known figure of Hugh walking the short distance through the small market town that night. Later two patrolling police officers noticed smoke billowing from a barn situated next to Hugh's stable. Firefighters were called and after they had put out the flames they discovered the charred body of Hugh Watson. He had been stabbed multiple times before being set alight while still alive. It appeared to be a senseless and motiveless murder. One theory was that it had been carried out by a passing stranger, while others believed the answers to this horrific mystery lay within the small rural community.

In mid 1995 Italian law student Victoria Cafasso decided to defer her studies and take some time out. The 20 year old travelled to Tasmania, Australia, staying with a distant relative while she thought through her options. She arrived in Beaumaris, a small seaside town on the north east coast of the island state, on October 6th. Five days later Victoria took a short walk to the local beach to do a spot of sunbathing. Just a few hours later her body was found on the shoreline. Victoria had been the victim of a frenzied attack and had suffered multiple stab wounds. Over the years there have been several persons of interest and in 2023 there has been a new development in the case.

It was nearly 2am on Sunday November 15th 1970 when 18 year old college freshman Robin Graham ran out of petrol on Hollywood freeway, California. A couple of highway patrol officers pulled up to assist her and directed Robin to the nearest emergency phone, from where she called her parents' home. They had not yet returned from an evening out so Robin left a message with her sister that she needed picking up. Over the next thirty minutes or so highway patrol officers passed by a few times to check on Robin. On one pass they noticed a man aged in his mid-twenties standing by the open bonnet of Robin's car. They assumed the man was a family member who had come to help. At approximately 2.30am, Robin's father arrived to collect her. He found the car locked and no sign of his daughter. Robin has not been seen since that night, more than fifty years ago.

*PART 1 of Kyllikki Saari (Unsolved Murder). Part 2 will be released Friday Nov 17th, 5:00am GMT.
Though it was 10pm it was still light as 17 year old Kyllikki Saari and her friend Maiju started their cycle home. It was Sunday May 17th 1953 and the pair had just attended a church youth event near the rural town of Isojoki, in southwest Finland. At a crossroads on a lonely forest road the friends separated - Kyllikki still had 6km to pedal before she would reach home. The teen never made it out of the woods, leaving a grieving town and a whole host of suspects.
With a complex and detailed narrative and over half a dozen persons of interest, Kyllikki’s case is one of the most challenging I have covered.

Sandy Drummond was a down to earth, bright and likeable former British soldier. The 33 year old worked at a paper mill and shared an isolated cottage with his brother just outside St Andrews in Fife, eastern Scotland. In the spring of 1991 Sandy’s relaxed demeanour suddenly altered and a cloud of sadness seemed to descend on him. A few months later Sandy abruptly resigned from his job and a few days later he was found dead, laying face down on a farm track close to his home. With no sign of violence it was believed Sandy had died of natural causes. The post mortem showed this theory could not have been further from the truth.

Segametsi Mogomotsi lived in the village of Mochudi, just outside the capital city of Gabarone in Botswana. On a Saturday in November 1994 the 14 year old disappeared while selling oranges to raise funds for an upcoming church excursion. Less than 24 hours later her dismembered body was found a short distance from her home. It appeared Segametsi had been been the victim of a ritual murder. This horrific crime was a catalyst for widespread protests across the country as many felt those in power were attempting to cover up the truth.

Dr Danuta Kaczmarska was loved and respected by her patients. In January 1986 the 52 year old was found brutally murdered at her home in Hall Green, Birmingham, in what looked like a frenzied but premeditated attack. The community and police were baffled. Then sensational and often judgemental stories began to surface that the kind, amiable doctor was leading a double life. It is suspected that Danuta knew her killer.

Brian McDermott left his home in East Belfast and promised his mum he would be back for Sunday lunch. It was the last day of the summer holidays in 1973 and the 10 year old was headed to the playground at nearby Ormeau park. Brian was spotted there by several witnesses but he never returned home. Six days later his partial remains were found in a hessian sack floating on the River Lagan. At the time police said it was the most ghastly and fiendish murder that Northern Ireland had ever witnessed. Fifty years on the case remains unsolved and is dogged with conspiracy and rumour.

Born in the first decade of the twentieth century, siblings Martha (known as Patti) and Griffith Thomas lived together their entire lives. By 1976 both Patti and Griff were retired and, although relatively wealthy, they led a simple and frugal life in their farmhouse near Llangolman, West Wales. In December that year the siblings were both found dead in their home in mysterious circumstances. An investigation was carried out but the answers it produced did not satisfy many local people. Over the last decade or so there have been several developments, including a connection to a Welsh serial killer and the surfacing of new, potentially vital information. This led Dyfed Powys police to announce in October 2022 that they were re-examining evidence in the case.

There was no sign of a struggle and two clean cups stood on the kitchen table. It appeared that Florence was entertaining a guest shortly before she was attacked. Between 1978 and 1996 eight infant abductions were connected to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. All the children were black and the average age of their mothers was just 18. Six of the infants were found safe and well and returned to their families. Two of the babies remain missing. Raymond Lamar Green was abducted in November 1978 and Tavish Sutton in March 1993. Their abductors were never traced and there is a good chance that both men are now living their lives completely oblivious to their true identities.

On a damp autumn evening in 1945, Caroline Evans made her way on foot from her home in Coedpoeth, North Wales to the neighbouring village of Minera. Since her father died the 38 year old school teacher made the trip every Saturday evening to visit her mother. She always took the same shortcut on a narrow, secluded footpath through Pant Tywyll, or Dark Hollow. This time Caroline didn’t arrive safely at her destination and early the following morning her battered body was found by a farm worker. Strange reports came in from witnesses and an investigation began which saw Scotland Yard detectives navigating anonymous tips, dramatic confessions and an elusive suspect.

In March 1980 19 year old Marine Alan Addis travelled to the Falkland Islands with the Royal Navy. The remote archipelago lies 480km east of the southern tip of Argentina. Alan was there as part of a detachment to train local volunteers in defence skills and equipment. Five months later, after an evening out at a social club in North Arm settlement, East Falkland, Alan vanished without a trace. An inquiry concluded he had probably drowned. However, rumours soon began circulating that Alan had been the victim of foul play and the islands were concealing a dark secret. A secret that has remained hidden to the present day.

On the morning of July 21st 1961, six year old Hattie Jackson and her older brother Herbert, set off with a packed lunch for Rock Creek Park. It was just a six block walk from the siblings’ home in north Washington D.C. After meeting up with Herbert’s friends the group played on the playground and then went swimming in the creek. After a little while the children split up and Hattie was left alone. Hattie was last seen on a swing; a man wearing sunglasses was standing next to her. Hattie has been missing since that day. Foul play is suspected and there is a person of interest in her abduction. What’s more Hattie’s case is inextricably linked to another long forgotten unsolved murder from America’s north east.

On a cold and foggy night in November 1967 Rita Ellis made her way across a road to an awaiting red car. The 19 year old then disappeared into the gloom and was never seen alive again. Rita was a cook at RAF Halton in Herefordshire and lived in the women’s accommodation block onsite. That evening she had arranged to babysit for Wing Commander Watson but she failed to turn up for the appointment. Her strangled body was found the next morning on the western edges of the RAF camp. Less than two months later a 20 year woman was left for dead after being brutally assaulted and police feared a psychopath was on the loose.

Kirsty Jones dreamed of seeing the world. In May 2000 the 23 year old left her home in mid Wales and embarked on a global trip of a life time. After visiting Singapore and Malaysia, Kirsty travelled to Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand. Kirsty had been in the city less than a week when a maid found her murdered body in her bedroom at the backpackers guesthouse where she was staying. DNA was found at the scene and several suspects were named in the press. The Royal Thai Police were confident the case would be solved within a week. Then days later the maid who discovered Kirsty’s body came forward to change her story. It was the first of many shocking developments in a beleaguered investigation that continued for the next two decades.

Guistina Macari was known as Christina by family and friends. On May 17th 1941 the three year old disappeared from outside her family’s fish and chip shop in Swansea, South Wales. Her little body was found 5km away in a wood the following day. Many witnesses came forward to say they had seen the little girl in the company of a man with long hair who walked with a stoop. It wasn’t long before a prime suspect emerged who police at the time believed had murdered before. A suspect who could be connected to another unsolved murder previously covered by this podcast.

At approximately 1.25am on January 27th 1974 the San Francisco police received an anonymous call saying a man’s body was lying near the water line on Ocean Beach. The police arrived and discovered the caller was telling the truth. It was the start of a reign of terror targeting the LGBT+ community that would leave at least six gay men murdered and many more lives destroyed. They were victims of a rage-fuelled serial killer known as “the Doodler”. Police gave him that moniker because of the way he gained the confidence of the men he murdered. He would hang around gay bars and clubs sketching portraits of his marks. “The Doodler” was never caught but modern day cold case investigators think they know his identity and he is alive and well, still living in the Bay Area.

In the spring of 2001, 9 year old Peggy Knobloch vanished from the small Bavarian town of Lichtenburg on her walk home from school. Despite a massive search operation no trace was found of the little girl. Three years later a neighbour of Peggy’s with pronounced learning difficulties was found guilty of her murder. The local community felt a miscarriage of justice had occurred and set up about trying to prove the man’s innocence and to uncover what had really happened to Peggy. Over the near two decades since, the case has twisted and turned with numerous revelations and suspects.

In the early hours of September 1st 1990 a person or persons unknown entered the Sousa family home in Cumberland Beach, Ontario, Canada. 13 year old Leah was assaulted in the living room before being dragged to the yard and killed. Her mother Lora was beaten and left for dead, but miraculously survived. Lora’s nine month old baby son was left unharmed in his cot. Despite police believing Lora saw her attacker’s face, the extent of her head injuries means she has no memories of that night. Leah’s murder is the biggest case in Ontario investigative history and, even thirty years on, can still be solved.

The last official sighting of 26 year old Maria Christina Requena was on New Year’s Day 1991. A week later her dismembered body was found at a beauty spot 24 km away. The location was only a couple of km away from where the mutilated body of 31 year old Linda Donaldson had been found in October 1988. Both women were sex workers and worked opposite ends of the East Lancs road that connects the cities of Manchester and Liverpool in the north west of England. The murders of Veronica Anderson in August 1991 and Julie Finley in 1994 have also been linked to a series of murders some journalists and cold case experts have apportioned to a killer referred to as the East Lancs Ripper.

At 4.15pm on Monday 26th September 1994 the Pacey’s 14 year old daughter arrived home from school to be met by silence. She looked for her mother Julie throughout the large house which was situated in an affluent part of Grantham, Lincolnshire. In the upstairs bathroom the teenager found her 38 year old mother unresponsive on the floor. The brave girl attempted CPR but it was not until the paramedics arrived that the true horror of what had happened became clear. Julie had been murdered. Underneath the polo neck of her sweater was the unmistakable mark of a ligature. Numerous witnesses reported sightings of a strange man, wearing a blue boiler suit, in the area at the time. This enigmatic figure became known as “Overalls Man” and continues to be the prime suspect in a case dogged by anonymous callers and rumours of another potentially linked murder.

Six year old Ludovic Janvier was abducted in the early evening of 17 March 1983. He and his two brothers had left the apartment where they were staying in Saint-Martin-d'Hères to run an errand for their father. On their way home the boys were approached by a man wearing a motorcycle helmet who asked for help looking for his dog. The man took Ludovic by the hand and walked away behind some houses. Ludovic has not been seen since. The case is one of 12 missing or murdered children in the Isère region of Southeast France from the 1980s and 90s.

Early on the morning of 11 February 1987 a cyclist on their way to work in Fort Collins, Colorado, discovered the mutilated body of an auburn-haired woman lying in a field. 37 year old Peggy Hettrick had last been seen leaving a local pub, six hours previously, to make the short walk home to her apartment. Several clues were left at the crime scene including finger prints, shoe markings, and two human hairs. Detectives quickly pinpointed a suspect but the investigation was dogged by tunnel vision and confirmation bias. Twenty years later DNA evidence would blow the case wide open.

Five year old Renee Aitken was abducted from her bed on the night of 16/17 February 1984. Her older brother Bradley was asleep in the same bedroom just feet away. The coastal village of Narooma, NSW and the surrounding bushland was searched dozens of times, but no trace of Renee was found. Two years later Renee’s mother Morna said publicly that she knew who had taken her daughter. Over a decade later the case was finally reopened leading to some dramatic and extraordinary findings.

It was a little after midnight on September 17th 1959 when Kelso Cochrane was attacked and murdered on his way home to his home in North Kensington, Notting Hill in West London. The 32 year old Antiguan carpenter was set upon by a group of white youths just a short distance from the bedsit that he shared with his fiancé Olivia. Despite evidence to suggest the attack had been racially motivated, within 24 hours of the murder the police insisted that this was not the case. Arrests were made but no charges were ever brought. The aftermath witnessed campaigners from the black community across the UK demand change whilst fascist groups attempted to ignite a race war. Over 60 years later the quest for justice for Kelso Cochrane is ongoing.

52 year old Phillip Saunders owned several newsagent kiosks around Cardiff city centre. On the evening of October 12th 1987 he completed his daily routine by collecting the takings from his kiosk near the Central Bus Station. After a quick drink in a local pub he headed by car back to his home in nearby Canton. As he walked from the car into his garden Phillip was brutally attacked and robbed. He died from his injuries five days later. The next month three teenaged men were arrested for the crime and their living nightmare began. The trio became known as The Cardiff Newsagent Three and their story is both shocking and heartbreaking.

21st March 1972, in hot rural Queensland it was sports day at North Mackay High. 14 year old Marilyn Wallman set off on her push bike just before 7.45am to catch the bus to school. The teenager never made it to the stop. Her two younger brothers, who had left the house 10 minutes later, found her bike discarded on the side of the road, 800m from home, its front wheel still spinning. Marilyn was nowhere to be seen and a grieving family’s decades-long quest for answers began.

Kayo Matsuzawa had always wanted to travel overseas. In November 1997 she finally got her wish and left her home in Japan for a year-long visit to Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island. Ten months into her stay, on 11th September 1998, the 29 year old flew to Auckland on the North Island for a short break. Kayo booked into a hostel and set out to discover what the country’s largest city had to offer. CCTV footage shows Kayo walking through the city centre just after 3.30pm. This was the last time Kayo was seen alive. Her body was found 11 days later in an obscure location.

Every Father’s Day the males in the Martin family would head to the Smoky Mountains National Park for a weekend of camping and hiking. The weekend of the 14th June 1969 was to be the first such trip for 6 year old Dennis, who was very excited about the little adventure. At the campsite Dennis, together with his older brother Douglas and two friends, decided to play a prank on the grown-ups. Dennis disappeared into the bushes, while the other boys went in the opposite direction, ready to jump out and surprise the adults. Douglas and their friends emerged as planned but little Dennis never did. He has not been seen since and the mystery has spawned numerous explanations and theories.

It was a damp August evening in 1925 when 21 year old Iris Watkins made her way to the post box at the end of the lane. The two letters that she posted made it to their destination the next day, but Iris never returned home. The small South Wales town of Blackwood became a hive of activity, with many locals joining in the search and the community full of rumours regarding what had happened to the young shop assistant. A little over a month later Iris’s body was found in a brook on the outskirts of the town, but that was just the beginning of the mystery.

The last official sighting of Yvonne Fitt was on 16th January 1992 when she signed on for benefits at the Bradford DSS offices. Following this the 33 year old single mother seemed to drop off the face of the earth. Over the late spring and summer of that year a few sporadic sightings of Yvonne were reported around Leeds and Bradford, sometimes in the company of an unidentified man. Then in September 1992 her body was found in woodland in the Yorkshire Dales, a half hour's drive from where she lived. Several murders have been linked to Yvonne’s and three convicted killers have been connected to the crime. As the thirtieth anniversary of Yvonne’s death approaches it’s not too late for her murder to be solved.

It was a Saturday afternoon in October 1965 and 14 year old Elsie Frost spent it as she had many others before; sailing on Horbury Lagoon in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. At around four o’clock in the afternoon she moored the boat and said goodbye to her instructor to make her way home on foot. The teenager hadn’t gone far when she was attacked and murdered in a tunnel that passed under a railway line. For decades the case lay dormant but Elsie’s siblings never gave up hope and over fifty years later the case was re-investigated and a likely suspect came to the fore.

It was a rainy March evening in the Tiger Bay area of Cardiff. 41 year old Lily Volpert was sitting down to her evening meal when there was a knock at the shop door. It had been a long day serving customers but she didn’t like letting people down and besides, 1952 had been a tough year so far and every penny counted. She headed back into the front of her shop to see what was wanted. Twenty minutes later the well-loved and respected shopkeeper was found dead; her throat had been cut. So began a tragedy that has left an indelible stain on Welsh history.

Svetlana Stepanova was enjoying a leisurely walk to the beach with her sister and friend when in the blink of an eye the trio found themselves in a living nightmare. In a matter of seconds Svetlana was attacked and murdered, after lagging just a short distance behind her companions. The death of the 19 year old would would expose further crimes and bring to attention a terrifyingly bold serial killer who stalked the desolate waste grounds of the Russian city of Cherepovets during the mid to late 2000s.

It should have been a happy day. The 28th November 1981 saw the Lee family, celebrating the second birthday of their youngest daughter, Katrice. The Lees lived in West Germany as Richard, Katrice’s Father, was stationed there with the British Army. A party was planned later that day but first they needed some supplies from the British Forces supermarket. During the short trip the toddler was out of sight for a matter of seconds, but it was long enough for Katrice to vanish without a trace. What happened to her remains a mystery to this day.

A couple of days after Christmas 1888, seven year old John Gill got up early, as he did most mornings, to assist local milk man William Barrett with his deliveries around the area of Manningham in Bradford. It was an icy morning so John was wrapped up warm as the horse and cart trundled off and he waved goodbye to his mother. John was never to return. 48 hours later his mutilated remains were discovered in a stable close to his home. The young man who had stumbled upon the gruesome sight, immediately recalled the newspaper stories detailing five horrific murders that had occurred in the East End of London over the autumn of that year. He quickly sprinted for help yelling “Jack the Ripper has been!”

It was approaching 4.00am when a train pulled into Korsor station on the island of Zealand in Denmark. 17 year old Emilie Meng and her friends had been on a night out in a neighbouring town to celebrate the end of their 2016 summer exams. The two friends got into a taxi but Emilie decided to walk the short distance from the station back to her home. She never made it back and for the next six months her disappearance gripped the nation, with dozens of sightings of her across Europe. This story was not to have a happy ending and on Christmas Eve the family’s worst fears were confirmed and a murder investigation was begun.

16 year old Kevin Hicks vanished on a Sunday evening in March 1986 after going on an errand to the local corner shop. Eighteen months later 15 year old Lee Boxell disappeared on a Saturday afternoon, he was thought to be on his way to watch a football match. Both boys lived relatively close to each other in neighbouring boroughs of South London. Neither of the boys have been seen since and their families continue to search for the truth. In the last decade police have said they suspect foul play.

The murder of Father Alexander Men was one of the defining moments of the last years of the Soviet Union. One Sunday morning in September 1990 on his journey to lead Mass the 55 year old priest was struck down with an axe by unidentified assailants. Father Men was a much-loved parish priest, an influential theologian and somewhat of of a celebrity, but he had many detractors. The KGB, Russian Nationalists and conservative elements within the Orthodox Church have all come under suspicion for the murder. Despite fifteen confessions, one trial and numerous theories and conspiracies, the crime remains unsolved.

There was nothing that Vera Page loved more in the world than swimming at the Lancaster Road Baths, in Notting Hill, West London. The 10 year old was proud of her achievements in the pool, especially of the two certificates she had just been awarded. On Monday the 14th of December 1931, Vera got home from school and headed two minutes down the road to her Aunt Minnie's house to collect the certificates which she had left with her the previous day. She was excited to show them to other members of her family. Vera told her Mum she wouldn't be long. She arrived at her Aunt's at 4.40pm and chatted briefly before leaving for home. For whatever reason, Vera did not return straight home and instead walked past her house and continued to Portobello Road, a popular shopping area. She was spotted several times over the next couple of hours, but Vera never returned home.

Like many children living in Atlanta, Georgia in the early twentieth century, thirteen year old Mary Phagan no longer went to school. Instead she regularly worked ten hour days to help put food on her family’s table. Life was tough but the morning of 26th April 1913 Mary awoke excited; it was a holiday and she was looking forward to the parade later that afternoon. First she had to run an errand and collect her pay from the National Pencil Factory where she worked. Mary arrived just after midday but would never leave the factory. Over 12 hours later her murdered body was found in the dingy basement of the factory, triggering a tragic saga that continues to have wide reaching consequences over 100 years later.

Anne Noblett was last seen alive at 6.03pm on 30th December 1957. The 17 year old had just returned from a rock and roll dance class in a neighbouring village. She vanished on the short walk from the bus stop to her family's home on Marshall Heath Lane in Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire. A month later, her body was found in a secluded woodland around 17km away. Anne was fully clothed and her arms had been placed across her chest. Silver and gold coins adorned the ground and it looked like the body had been frozen before being so delicately posed in this macabre tableau.

When the Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers walked off stage at the London Astoria on 21st December 1994, they left in their wake a mangled mess of guitars and amps. The band had signed off their last date on tour by smashing their instruments, which, in hindsight, signaled the end of an era. 6 weeks later, troubled lyricist and driving force of the band Richey Edwards disappeared on the eve of a promotional tour to the USA. He has not been seen by his family or his band mates since that day. A couple of weeks later his car was found abandoned near a notorious suicide spot, but no body has ever been found. Rumours of sightings and conspiracies have fueled the belief that Richey is still alive and a recent book has presented a compelling case that the 27 year old faked his own death and staged his disappearance in order to vanish into obscurity.

A crowd quickly gathered outside the Private Shop on Dilwyn Street, Swansea, following news of the horrific and shocking events of the morning. The body of 38 year old shop manager Sandra Phillips had been found inside in a pool of blood. The mother of four had been sexually assaulted, bludgeoned and strangled. Two homeless brothers, Wayne and Paul Darvell were among the onlookers in the crowd and were quickly arrested for the crime. This was the beginning of a dark tale of lies and injustice that continues to haunt South Wales to this day.

The Royal Wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana in July 1981 brought two million people to the streets of London. It was a day of street parties and celebration for many in the UK but for the Mehrotra family, it was the start of a nightmare that has never ended. 8 year old Vishal disappeared shortly after returning to Putney from the family excursion into the city to join in the wedding celebrations. He was last seen walking home, 250m from his front door. Seven months later his remains were found in a remote Sussex wood, beginning a murder investigation dogged by accusations of racism and a list of potential suspects that include some of the most vile people ever to have walked the streets of the UK.

Nairn is a small Highland town situated on the North East coast of Scotland. In 2004 it was the home of Alistair and Veronica Wilson and their two young boys. At the end of November that year, 30 year old Alistair was about to begin his last week working for the Bank of Scotland before starting a new job. It was a Sunday evening, the Wilson children had just been bathed and Alistair was reading them a bedtime story when the front doorbell rang. Veronica went downstairs and opened the door. The unidentified visitor asked for her husband by name, presenting him with a mysterious envelope. Minutes later Alistair was slouched at the entrance to the house, suffering from three fatal gunshot wounds. His assassin walked away into the night.
Almost two decades on The Doorstep Murder continues to draw speculation regarding numerous possible theories and potential suspects. Why would anyone want to harm this quiet, clever and devoted family man?

Providence House lay in the picturesque village of Peasenhall in East Suffolk. The large property was owned by Mr and Mrs Crisp and in 1900 Rose Harsent, a young local woman, came to live and work as their domestic servant. Rose was a colourful character with a love of music and she attracted a fair amount of male attention. The night of the 31st May 1902 witnessed a fierce storm, and as the wind howled and thunder roared Rose sat on her bed waiting for a visitor. They had promised to meet her at midnight in an unsigned letter she received earlier that day. The night passed and the people of Peasenhall woke up, completely oblivious to the horror that had occurred when they were tucked up in their cosy beds. That morning Rose’s body was found by her father at the foot of her staircase surrounded by a pool of blood.

A move from London to the South Coast seemed like the perfect opportunity for a fresh start for Billie-Jo. The 9 year old had not had the easiest start to life and found herself placed into foster care with Lois and Sion Jenkins and their four daughters in London. Coincidentally Billie -Jo shared her foster family's last name. The family relocated to Hastings for Sion's new job as a deputy head teacher and Billie-Jo was happy go with them and leave the capital behind. The seaside town was in many ways an idyllic place to live but over the next five years life for Billie Jo and the Jenkins family was increasingly overshadowed by darker happenings. Billie-Jo complained that someone was following her, and the whole family were increasingly spooked by the presence of a prowler on their property. On 15th February 1997, when Billie-Jo was just 13 years old, a seemingly innocuous afternoon spent doing chores for pocket money ended in tragedy. So began one of the most infamous murder investigations of the last 25 years.

In the mid 1980’s the bodies of numerous murdered women and girls were found alongside Interstates across the Bible Belt. Many of the victims remained Jane Does for decades, and even today some are unidentified. Most were vulnerable individuals, hitchhiking far from home. The most striking commonality was that they all had red hair. There has been much debate over whether this may be coincidence or if it is the work of an unknown serial killer. Thirty years later, answers are finally beginning to be uncovered , in no small part thanks to the work of a high school sociology class.

Just a few weeks after the outbreak of the Second World War, 4 year old Joyce Cox was found murdered near a disused railway station in Cardiff, South Wales. Joyce had disappeared on her usual lunch time walk home from school on the 28th September 1939. Her body was found the following day. For decades the case has been shrouded in mystery, and there has been talk of a cover up, but in 2017 the police finally broke their silence on the case.

The school bus dropped Muriel Drinkwater at her usual stop, leaving her to walk the last part of her journey home to the family farm in Penllergaer, West Wales. The 12 year old loved to sing and there was a skip in her step as she started on the winding path through the forest. Just before she entered the woods she looked up to see the farm in the distance. Her mother was in the kitchen and they exchanged a wave before Muriel disappeared from view. Muriel never made it home and her body was found the next day in the undergrowth. She had been assaulted and shot twice in the chest. No arrests were ever made but evidence unearthed in 2020 has produced the name of a new prime suspect.

Three siblings: Michael, 29, Norah, 27, and Ellen, 18, set off for a Boxing Day dance at the small Queensland town of Gatton. The year was 1898 and their mode of transport was a sulky, a small horse-drawn carriage. They arrived at the hall to find the dance cancelled and, feeling disappointed, began to make their way back to the family farm. The following morning, when they failed to return, their brother-in-law was sent to search for them. He found the three siblings in a small wooded paddock a little way from the road, witnessing a scene like none other throughout the history of Australian crime.

April chatted with some friends as she fussed over Judy the Donkey in a field in the hamlet of Metton, Norfolk. It was a couple of days after Easter 1969 and the 13 year old had stopped at “Donkey Field” on her way to her eldest sister’s house in the neighbouring village of Roughton. After a short time April was back on her bicycle and on her way. April never made it to her sister’s house and she has not been seen or heard from since that day.

Two brothers travelled to the Clocaenog forest in North Wales in 2015 to watch a stage of the Wales rally GB event. Although it was well into November they decided to brave the wintry Welsh weather and wild camp in the forest rather than stay in a hotel or hostel. On their first night, whilst searching for firewood amongst the trees, they stumbled upon some bones that were very obviously human remains. So began the mystery of the Clocaenog Forest Man.

On Halloween 1966, Joseph Bates awoke early in the morning to find that his 18 year old daughter, Cheri Jo, had not slept in her bed the previous night. Cheri had been studying in the River City College library and it was completely out of character for her to stay out all night, so Joseph contacted the police. A short time later Cheri’s body was found face-down in an alleyway on the college campus. There was evidence of a struggle and Cheri had been stabbed multiple times. The local police had no unsolved murders on their books and expected to solve this terrible crime quickly and efficiently. Unfortunately, the case proved far from straightforward.

It was the school holidays in April 1959 when the bubbly and confident 6 year old Carol Stephens was sent by her mum on an errand to the local shop in the Cathays area of Cardiff. When she returned she quickly dropped off the shopping and hurried back out of the front door determined not to let the rainy Welsh weather stifle her fun. Carol never came home and two weeks later her tiny body was found in a remote area of West Wales 90 km from her home.

During the summer of 1990, in Llangollen, North Wales, 52 year old antiques dealer Trevaline Evans put a sign on her shop door which read “back in 2 minutes”. She popped across to a local market stall and purchased some fruit for her lunch. Around an hour and a half later a witness saw Trevaline walking near her home, a short distance from her shop. There have been no confirmed sightings of Trevaline since then. Did she choose to disappear? Was there an unfortunate accident? Or was she the victim of foul play by persons unknown?

On a Saturday afternoon in September 1956 Jean Chalinder took advantage of her day off from work and headed out on her bicycle. She had decided to make her way to some farmland just a half-hours ride away from her home in the Penylan area of Cardiff.
It should have been a pleasant time picking blackberries in the beautiful Welsh countryside and enjoying the autumnal sights and fresh air. What actually transpired was one of the most brutal murders the Welsh capital had ever witnessed and a hunt for a killer that continues to this day.
