Marginalia Pod
Join two Antipodean imports as they get up close and personal with their favourite books through a committed practice, all in the name of developing a closer understanding of a text, themselves, and each other. This is about the magic of storytelling, the power of always being open to learning, and the joy of honouring friendship despite distance, pandemics, and other pesky obstacles.
Here we are, at the end of all things. It's time to say goodbye to the Gansey as we read chapters 62 to the epilogue of The Raven King through the theme of promise this week.
In this section, Ronan is being unmade and Adam, unable to bear it, scries and gets some useful advice from Persephone. Meanwhile, Gansey accepts that there is no time to save himself, and asks Blue to kiss him. She does, and he dies. It’s pretty terrible. Henry compells them to action, and Adam suggests asking Cabeswater to die for Gansey. Together, they work with the last of Ronan’s dreamt forest, and Gansey is remade. In the epilogue, Adam confronts his parents for the last time; Gansey, Blue, and Henry receive a graduation gift from Ronan for their gap year; and Ronan begins to dream.

Wah wah, things are going awry and one might say, the Gangsey are at risk of feeling a bit disillusioned... That's the theme for chapters 55-61 of The Raven King this week.
In this section, Gansey walks the tunnel to Glendower until his phone battery runs out... but the Gangsey find him. They find Glendower—but there is no waking this sleeping king. As they head back to Cabeswater in search of a solution to their demon problem, Adam is possessed and tries to kill Ronan. Back in Henrietta, the political fundraiser has come and gone, but the sale for the demon is just about to start. It does not end well for Piper Greenmantle.

Chaos is a ladder... into this week's episode as we read chapters 48-54 of The Raven King through, you guessed it, the theme of chaos.
In this section, Gwenllian gives Gansey some advice, and then he rushes off to follow a storm of birds to his king. He gets in the Camaro and goes. Ronan is woken by Blue to the news that Gansey has gone–he offers to dream something that will help find him. The Camaro does Gansey a solid by breaking down, allowing Henry the chance to help. They follow the birds to the same place Gansey first died. He comes to the conclusion that he was saved so he could find Glendower and kill the demon; and Henry finds the opening to a cave. Gansey decides to go in on his own.

We're reading chapters 41-47 of The Raven King through the theme of shame this week.
In this section, Gwenllian attacks Artemus, who retreats into Blue’s favorite beech tree. Adam and Ronan dream together and find disease and death in Cabeswater. Gansey, meanwhile, has taken Henry and Blue to lunch with his parents. The Gangsey is reunited to support Ronan. Blue finally gets to talk to her father, who tells the story of the tir e e’lintes, the tree lights, and tells her, finally, how they can stop the demon: by a willing sacrifice along the corpse road.

We fancy ourselves quite good at observing, so it's a great theme for us as we read chapters 34-40 of The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater this week.
In this section, Declan and Ronan have a nice moment. Back in Cabeswater, Neeve is trying to mitigate the harm of Piper Greenmantle and the demon, and is unmade for her efforts. At the Barns, the Gangsey piece together their experiences. Adam tells Gansey about the kiss; Gansey admits that he loves Blue. Henry Cheng is kidnapped by Mr Gray, but Gansey intervenes.

We're reading 27-33 of The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater through the theme of bravery this week. It feels like a veyr apt theme as these characters have been called upon to be brave time and time again.
In this section, Gansey is waiting for Blue at the urgent care when Ronan and Adam turn up, post-Cabeswater misadventure. Gansey comes clean about his and Blue’s relationship. Meanwhile, in DC, Declan gets a call from an old “friend” of Niall’s to let him know the wolves are convening on Henrietta. Declan takes himself to Henrietta and he and Ronan have a heart-to-heart (kind of). Ronan elects to stay in Henrietta, but asks Declan to take Matthew to DC to keep him safe. Henry, meanwhile, convinces Gansey to climb into a hole in the basement of a building and puts a robotic bee in his hand. It’s a test of mettle that Gansey passes. The rituals are intricate. (Henry also has fun playacting an Aglionby jerk with Blue.) Adam is coming to terms with wanting to be closer to Ronan than just friends, possibly, maybe. And Adam and Ronan kiss!

Get ready to dive deep cause we're all about discovery this week! That's our theme for chapters 21-26 of Maggie Stiefvater's The Raven King.
In this section, Adam and Ronan run into trouble retrieving Orphan Girl from Cabeswater. Adam finally asks all the right questions, and discovers that Ronan manifested Cabeswater—which raises lots of questions about who Adam is beholden to, if anyone. Meanwhile, Blue and Gansey head back to Fox Way, only to find the entire house dark, and buzzing, and terrifying. A possessed Noah trie to claw out Blue’s eye; Gansey’s intention and her battery power are the only things that save them. Piper Greenmantle uses her new friend the demon to casually murder her ex, Colin.

Maura and Mr Gray go on a little driving of their own, and find Noah reliving his death in the bathroom at Piper Greenmantle’s old house.

What does commitment mean to you? It's a big theme and there's a lot to work with in chapters 7-13 of The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater.
In this section, we are introduced to the Laumonier triplets, one of whom happens to be Piper Greenmantle’s father. The Gangsey take Orphan Girl to Cabeswater to live with Aurora, for lack of any better options. Blue faces the reality of a grim future without Gansey & without the ability to travel the world like she wants to. Gansey has a panic attack at Raven Day; Henry Cheng shows up to save him. Adam’s hands and eyes, in service to Cabeswater, no longer seem to be completely under his control. Something sinister is happening to their beloved wood…

Here we are again, at the end of another season! It always comes around too fast. This week, we read chapters 84-epilogue of Any Way The Wind Blows through the theme of love and wrap up our time with this book. It's the perfect theme to end our journey with this wonderful series!
In this section, Lady Ruth and Jamie invite Simon and Baz over for a celebration lunch where Simon commits a sword faux pas... or does he? Turns out Simon's picked up the family Excalibur, which can only be moved by a Salisbury, which means that Simon Snow is Lucy’s lost child. Finally, a resolution! Penny takes Shepard home for dinner - they like each other and it’s very great and cute. And we get a glimpse of Agatha's future - she's moved to Watford where she keeps the goats, and she's content with trading in her wand for a walking stick.

This week, we read chapters 74-83 of Any Way The Wind Blows through the theme of maturity. It's a loaded concept, often used as a compliment when in actuality it might not come from a healthy place. Lots to talk about!
In this section, Agatha and Niamh are surprised to find there's another—which survives, along with the doe. And they kiss! Simon Snow has sent Penny and Baz and Shep on a wild goose chase—because he intends to stop Smith-Richards himself. He tries to curse Simon but the spells bounce right off, and Simon yet again saves the day. Meanwhile, Mitali Bunce is d o n e with all this nonsense. Baz takes Daphne home, and Simon takes Jamie home to Lady Ruth. Baz gives Fiona his mother’s ring (and his kind-of blessing), and he and Simon come to a better understanding of what it means to be in a relationship with each other.

Everything hurts and we’re dying… this week is a lot! We’re reading chapters 11-19 of Rainbow Rowell’s Any Way The Wind Blows through the theme of confusion.
In this section, Baz turns up at Simon & Penny’s flat only to discover that Simon has left. He refuses to accept this and hunts him down… only for SImon to break up with him. Honestly, it’s pretty terrible. Meanwhile, Agatha is put to work in her dad’s clinic where she’s roped in to help Niamh, the magical veterinarian in training, with separating Simon from his wings. Simon and Agatha have a moment. Simon has his real come-to-Jesus moment and rushes off to fix things with Baz. It’s a LOT.

It’s time to wrap up the Carry On trilogy! For season 11, we read the final book in the series, Any Way The Wind Blows by Rainbow Rowell. In this section, we meet Lady Ruth - Lucy’s mother! She is looking now for her son, Jamie, who has also gone missing. Simon gets an unexpected inheritance. Penny takes Shepard home for a consultation but it goes poorly. Baz bails his ungrateful aunt out of jail, and then gets stuck in Oxford for a week helping out his father. The question is, where’s Daphne?? Meanwhile, Simon is ghosting Baz as he prepares to leave the World of Mages behind, forever.

Well, who can believe it, we’ve yet again reached the end of a book before we were ready for it! This week, we read chapters 48-epilogue of Blue Lily, Lily Blue through the theme of discovery and wrap up our journey with this wonderful book.
In this section, Ronan and Blue discover a lake that is also a mirror, and Blue uses her mirror magic to cross it. Blue finds her mom, and Artemus, and leads them almost out of the third sleeper’s lair before Piper, one of her minions, and Mr Gray (tied up) appears. Mayhem ensues. Our favourites manage to get free as the cave collapses around them, trapping Piper and her minion underground... But then Neeve appears and convinces Piper to open the tomb.

The Gangsey and Gwenllian all descend into the Cabeswater cave to retrieve Maura, and they find a cave full of wondrous skeletons.

Pretty grim topic this week but one that comes up often enough for these characters, sadly – we're reading chapters 33-37 of Blue Lily, Lily Blue through the theme of violence.
In this section, the Greenmantles go spelunking. Piper continues to be weird and it's freaking Colin out! Gwenllian, meanwhile, is wreaking noisy havoc at 300 Fox Way, but the Gray Man asks her to sing her story, and she does. She shows Blue that they’re the same, they're mirrors. If things aren’t weird and spooky enough, there’s a scaffolding failure at Aglionby and where Adam should have been killed, he's been perfectly protected–Cabeswater again.

In this section, it’s raining blood and there’s a comet and they’ve rescued an ancient madwoman who just happens to be Gwenllian, illegitimate daughter of Owen Glendower. They trundle her back to 300 Fox Way, where Persephone has been waiting for her. Malory tells Blue a little bit about Gansey before. Ronan and Adam go to church to dream up terrible evidence in order to implicate Colin Greenmantle in a series of disgusting crimes. Adam’s father turns up at his apartment and tries to intimidate him, then hurt him, but Cabeswater intervenes.

Well, here we are again! We're wrapping up Wayward Son this week through the theme of failure. It's been a big ol journey.
In this section, Baz thinks Simon is dead. Simon is trying to rally, but he can’t get up, not until he hears Baz calling for him. Shep gets Agatha and Penny out of the SUV, and they come to the rescure with magic. Shep comes up with a getaway plan, and once they get somewhere with magic they heal each other. Once back in San Diego, Simon and Baz have a moment by the ocean. Shep tells Penny he’s cursed. And then it turns out Watford is in trouble!

In our section this week, The Gray Man is forced to face his worst fear. Gansey and Ronan enlist Blue’s help in finding Kavinsky’s fourth of July party. Kavinsky dreams a dragon, draining Cabeswater and leaving Ronan with nothing left to work with. Adam solves the problem. Back in reality, Ronan finds Matthew just in time to see Kavinsky killed by his own creation. They all arive back at 300 Fox Way to find that Maura has disappeared.

There’s so much going on in these chapters, but we are on the case. We critically examine everything that happens in chapters 20 through 27 and this time we each chose a theme to focus on: Jen V took pride and Jenn D tackled privilege. Meanwhile on Thisby, Sean is not rolling over for Mutt Malvern anymore, but he’s still got to toe the line with Benjamin Malvern. George Holly keeps popping up, helpful and curious and so darn cute.
