Welcome or welcome back to the Youth Voice Podcast! It's that time of year everyone. Back to school. You're probably either elated, frustrated, or chill about school starting up again, but undoubtedly everyone is adjusting for going back to school amid a global pandemic. For us, school is in person and we are all freaking out!!! There's positives and negatives to this switch authorized by the CDC, but if you are going back to school GET THE VACCINE. Our array of collaborators on this episode digs deep into the shared sentiments of teenagers during this point of the pandemic and going back to school.
BUT WAIT. We would like to introduce our newest member, Alison, to the Youth Voice Podcast! She will be collaborating on episodes and helping out with research and social media promotion for YVO from now on. Behind the scenes is our other newest member, Tyler! You might remember him as a guest speaker from our combatting AAPI Hate episode, and now he has joined us as an editor, script writer, and will take on other responsibilities.

The first section was with members of the 22 Blue Podcast, and featured individual stories/experiences from an all LGBTQ panel. Welcome or welcome back to the Youth Voice Podcast! Happy Friday, we made it to the end of the week! For our fellow students watching who finished/are finishing school, have a happy summer! Today's episode was possibly one of our toughest discussions yet because the Israel and Palestine situation is one with deeply rooted history and animosity on both sides. Some brief history for our viewers: Jewish people have been persecuted, oppressed, slaughtered, and displaced ever since the inception of Judaism. The only homeland that was sacred to Judaism was Israel, but in the 19th century it was Ottoman Palestine and had a majority Muslim population, although it was mostly peaceful. When the Holocaust occurred, many Holocaust survivors were denied entry into myriads of countries until the British Mandate, Balfour Declaration, and 1947 Partition of Palestine, whence "Zionism" or Israeli Nationalism was born. After a plethora of wars that broke out between both nations, Israelis established Jewish settlements over Palestinian settlements (many of which were illegal for settlers in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip), leading to large loss of life and infrastructure for Historic Palestine. This became known as the Nakba, a catastrophe for Palestine because over 700,000 Palestinians became refugees in surrounding Arab countries. Meanwhile, Palestine revolted repeatedly against many Jewish settlements with leading attacks coming from extremist organizations such as the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization) and Hamas that essentially wanted to wipe out Israel completely. The ongoing conflict finally sparked a few peace talks, such as the Oslo Accords and the Camp David Summit, but they were consequently unavailing. Israel continued colonialist expansion until roughly 80% of the land became taken over as a Jewish State, while Palestinians to this day are ignored basic human rights, vital resources, etc. The issue today: Hamas fired over 3,000 rockets into Tel-Aviv and surrounding cities, but Israel was mainly able to shield itself with counter-rockets. In retaliation, Israel bombarded the Gaza strip with bombs and reportedly over 1600 people died. The ratio of children dying on either side is 550:1, Palestine to Israel. Aljazeera, one of the leading media networks in Palestine was bombed too, so these numbers might not fully contain the actual amount of casualties. We had a pretty fluid discussion on the issue, despite its daunting complexity. We had a brilliant guest speaker today, Ida, who was very well-informed about this issue because of her Palestinian roots and having lived in that area. Mental health is becoming a pretty prevalent issue at this juncture, or at least it's finally being recognized as a more pressing concern than people thought years ago. We went over A LOT about mental health in today's episode with a very very special guest, Dr. Mykee Fowlin. Learn more about what he does as an educator, poet, actor, psychologist, and inspirational figure, as well as his insights on mental health by tuning in!
Mental health is such a complex issue, and no one can truly understand what other people go through with mental health on a daily basis, especially because of the stigmatization, racial/cultural pressure, expectations, etc. For all of our listeners out there, know this: 1) You are absolutely NOT alone. 2) You can always reach out, DM us on IG, email us via our business email, or communicate in some other way. 3) Take breaks and do what eases your mind when stress becomes overbearing, whether that's tuning into a podcast or doing yoga or whatever puts you at peace. Welcome or welcome back! Today we talked about the Immigration Crisis at the U.S--Mexico border, with the recently seen influx of children as well as migrant women crossing the border for refuge. The epidemic is nothing new, and has been gradually getting worse and worse since the United States Government first declared it a crisis. Most of how the situation came to be can be traced back to widespread violence and organized crime, compounded with the region’s socio-economic instability and poverty. In retrospect, the arrival is a hot mess in terms of organization, and has been disagreed with continuously over the years with how it should be handled in the Obama, Trump, and now Biden era. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are deciding how to handle the situation, where it seems Vice President Harris might take more precedence over the issue. Either way, the topic was the center of today's discussion and insights about the handling of the crisis, and whatnot. Shoutout to Sharanya and Anu for editing! Welcome or welcome back to the Youth Voice Podcast! We are back from our short break with our 8th Episode. Today we discussed the recent surge in hate crimes and violence towards the AAPI Community & Asian Americans. AAPI, or Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are being subject to an escalating number of hate crimes across America. There has been a 1900% increase in hate crimes towards AAPI people since COVID-19 started. Though this is nothing new to Asian Americans, whom have experienced hate crimes and discrimination since America's inception, a horrifying surge has been spotlighted across 47 states and the District of Columbia, until the pinnacle was reached during the Georgia Massacre on February 23. Eight people were killed, six of whom were Asian Women. These are the victims that tragically died:
Hyun Jung Grant: 51, a single mother of 2 children. Loved karaoke, dancing, clubs, and “made the best Kimchi Stew” according to her son Randy Park.
Xiaojie (Emily) Tan: 49, owner of Young’s Asian Spa, and a hard working mother, full of smiles and laughter, dreamed of traveling the world with her daughter, who was her best friend. She died a day before her birthday.
Delaina Ashley Yaun: 33, Had a 13 year-old son and 8 month-old daughter. She and her husband were married less than a year.
Yong Ae Yue: 63, worked at the aromatherapy spa in Atlanta, and a single mother.
Suncha Kim: 69, a grandmother who worked at Gold Spa and liked to line dance. She came to America when she was young seeking better educational opportunities and a better life for her and her family.
Soon Chung Park: 74, worked at Goldspa. She planned to move in with her son-in-law and daughter right before she was killed.
Daoyou Feng: 44, not much is known about her, but she was ostensibly very kind and quiet.
Paul Andre Michels: 54, Veteran, businessman, one of nine siblings, and “good-hearted man”.

Again, welcome back to Youth Voice!!! In today's episode we decided to focus on the pressing issue of climate change and solutions such as the Green New Deal and the Paris Climate Accords. Global warming, as Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders puts it, is the most existential threat of our time. Greenhouse gas emissions, mostly from burning coal, oil, natural gas, and manufacturing cement are enormous man-caused contributors to global warming. The scope of adverse impacts that it is having on the world is becoming more and more harrowing; ranging all the way from literally turning the ocean into a rising acid pool to massive heat waves/wildfires. According to the Climate Clock, there are only 6 years and 337 days to achieve zero carbon emissions (or under a 34.7 degree Fahrenheit threshold) before the affects of climate change become irreversible. At this point, there is no more denying it, the science has long backed up that global warming exists and it needs to be addressed. While climate change is not a political issue, it has sadly been politicized by certain right-wing elected officials. The new Biden administration will start tackling this issue more forcefully than the previous administration (where almost no initiative whatsoever was taken to combat the climate crisis). This will no longer be misconceived as a left--right dispute, but rather a humankind dispute. The earth is our home, and we need to protect it by taking action (links provided below)! Welcome back to the Youth Voice Podcast Episode 2: January 6th Capitol Buildings Riot. The events that unfolded at the capitol are what can only be described as an attack on our democracy; an attempted coup. The obscene and appalling behavior of the insurgents was proof of how the Trump administration had been feeding false information and inciting sedition to overturn the results of the 2020 election far before it happened. We all saw this coming, and yet the unpreparedness was striking to millions of viewers that watched as the capitol building was stormed, vandalized, desecrated, and tarnished with blood. Hello! Welcome to the first episode of our podcast Youth Voice. We are a group of teens that aim to be heard in the political and social world. While teenagers don’t have a voice in terms of our vote, we are the future, and it is especially important that you listen to us. The work that lawmakers do every day affects us just as much as anybody else, and while we don’t have ballots to cast, thanks to social media, it’s easy to share our opinions. To adults I say: listen to us, because we are the future of our country. And let your children develop their own opinions, irrespective of yours, especially in the polarized world we live in today. To my fellow teenagers I say: take time to educate yourself. Whether it’s listening to this podcast, reading the news, watching, or even partaking in a debate. No matter what anyone says, we’re not too young to begin informing ourselves about politics. Soon enough we will have the right to cast an educated ballot and participate in this great democracy.
