  • choosing curiosity;

  • making it safe;

It can be a real challenge in workplaces to know what to assess, which wellbeing initiatives to run, and which of those need to be prioritised in order to reduce the overall health risks for your employees. Many wellbeing leaders struggle with the notion that many of their wellbeing program engagements throughout the year are only engaged in by the “healthiest” employees, or those that arguably may be already proactively looking after their own health and wellbeing. In Australia and New Zealand, 2 out of 3 people will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70.This is a harrowing statistic, and given our affinity in these countries to embracing the outdoors, sport, beaches, the clean air and open spaces, it is clear that prevention and protection against skin cancer is vitally important. While we are dropping a few stats, there is data that we have gathered at Pinnacle Health Group, in relation to the employee skin cancer checks that we deliver. And its a doozy:Of the employees that undergo a skin cancer check with Pinnacle at their workplace -for up to 71 percent of these people - it is their first ever skin cancer check they've had conducted. To put this in simpler terms, if these employees didn't have a skin cancer check arranged with their workplace, they simply would not have had their skin checked for suspicious lesions, spots to watch, and of course, cancers.Skin Cancer Checks are our most popular employee health check, and with the pending Spring and Summer seasons approaching quickly, we feel that it’s a super-important time to share our knowledge and advice, to ensure that workplaces can effectively deliver skin cancer checks moving forward. In this interactive and practical workshop delivered by Trent Marsh, National Health and Wellbeing Manager you will learn: The background of employee skin cancer checks, and what the most popular skin cancer checks entail The logistics, considerations, and planning process to delivering a highly engaged workplace skin check program The importance of awareness and communication in order to engage employees in skin cancer checks How skin cancer checks can be delivered for the hybrid workforce How to inspire employees from all health backgrounds to get regular check ups And how to use the skin check program data obtained in checks to guide decision making on your overall employee wellbeing programThis one-hour session is interactive and suitable for leaders in HR, Health and Wellbeing or Health and Safety, or team leaders looking to inspire their team to healthy change. This 30 minute Masterclass, delivered by Josh Lambert, is interactive and suitable for people in HR, or Health, Safety and Wellbeing professionals in large organisations, government teams, those working in mid-tier businesses and even small business owners.

Today, we're joined by Jess Ekserdjian and Sophie Curtis, clinical psychologists and co-founders of Enso Workplace Wellbeing. Their extensive experience in public mental health and private practice has honed their focus on workplace wellbeing and resilience.

Resilience, for Jess and Sophie, is not just about bouncing back from adversity but thriving during stability. They emphasise the pivotal role of mindset, employing psychological frameworks like CBT and self-compassion.

Their workshops empower individuals to identify and reframe negative thoughts, leading to tangible improvements in workplace wellbeing and performance. They stress the importance of open dialogues on workplace wellbeing and have found active employee engagement to be a powerful tool. The pandemic has underscored the relevance of resilience, making it a post-COVID buzzword. Jess and Sophie recommend organisations measure the impact of resilience programs on both employees and workplace culture.

Looking ahead, they foresee a sustained focus on workplace resilience and wellbeing, recognising its pivotal role in organisational success. This emphasis will be critical for organisations navigating the evolving landscape of work.

If you work in the workplace wellbeing, health and safety or human resources space, chances are you have heard a lot lately around “Psychosocial Risk” and “Psychosocial Support”.

The development of new workplace regulations in Australia has strengthened workplace health and safety laws, to better address risks to workplace psychological health. This has meant that workplace stakeholders have needed to improve education and awareness related to psychosocial hazards, to minimise or eliminate these risks in Australian workplaces and help to build safe and healthy workplaces.

At Pinnacle Health Group, we are fielding loads of enquiries relating to psychosocial support, and the practical ways to provide services and programs to complement psychosocial risk management policies and procedures.

We delivered July and August Masterclasses on this topic: Psychosocial Support for Workplaces.

In this session, we provide an overview of:

  • the role of psychosocial support in overall workplace health and wellbeing
  • an overview of the key categories of psychosocial risk in the workplace
  • how to provide easy access to an Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • implementing regular employee access to 1:1 conversations and feedback
  • and understanding the training/resources relating to responding to mental health risks

As mentioned, the session today aimed to share some insights into not only the changes in WHS legislation and requirements of workplaces to manage psychosocial hazards, but also the broader context and integration of these requirements with the overall HS&W strategy at your organisation.

As also mentioned - this session only scratched the surface in terms of understanding best practice, and how to actually implement the risk management process in your workplace.

The Model Code of Practice (i.e. how to actually implement the process at your organisation) can be found below, using the link.

About Simon

Simon Ursell is the MD of UK B Corp four-day week environmental consultancy Tyler Grange. Simon co-founded and has led the UK nationwide firm for 13 years and is also a non-executive director of iGem an IT recruitment and another 4-day week company, as well as a non-executive director of Mindful Peak performance - a mindfulness organisation that supports young carers and provides mindfulness coaching to business leaders and elite athletes.

Simon’s a mental health advocate with a particular passion for workplace wellbeing, employee performance and company culture - which led to the introduction of a four-day work week - where everyone works reduced hours and no one works Fridays whilst losing no salary or benefits - and resulted in:

  • A 22% increase in productivity working four days rather than five
  • An 88% increase in CVs received and 66% reduction in absenteeism
  • Employees being 28% less tired and 14% happier

Simon believes that change is always a good thing - taking risks and disrupting the norms. He believes in business that creates positive outcomes for the environment, society and the people that work for them.

In this solo episode of our podcast, Tom Bosna discusses the concept of deloading and how it can help you achieve your fitness and work goals. Deloading involves taking a step back and allowing your body and mind to recover to prevent injury and maintain productivity.

Tom explores how deloading can be applied to various aspects of our lives including fitness, work, and managing stress levels. Just like a graph, where we train with increasing intensity for a specific period, then dip down for a deloading week or an offloading week before returning to regular training, we can apply this concept to our everyday lives.

Tom discusses the importance of managing time and energy as valuable resources and prioritising rest and recovery tactics such as exercise, meditation, and spending quality time with loved ones. Tom also explore the importance of mental and emotional recovery, focusing on quality over quantity in both strength training form and work output.

You will learn about realistic planning, delegation, and saying no to certain activities during high workload periods can help manage energy levels. We will also look at the benefits of social connection, setting up more realistic deadlines, and scheduling regular breaks throughout the year. Make sure to listen to this episode to equip yourself with the tools needed to handle the stresses of work and life!

Are you someone who feels burned out and overworked? Have you been feeling like life is just moving too fast for you lately? If you're looking to slow down and create a slower lifestyle, this episode of the Well Workplaces podcast is just what you need.

Today, Tom is joined by Dr Natalie Flatt; the co-founder and CEO of Connect Psych Services. Together, they discuss the notion of slow living and creating a slower lifestyle, something that is increasingly important in today's busy and pressured work environment.

Dr Natalie highlights the negative impact of hustle culture, where success is often measured by speed, leading to burnout being all too common in our society. However, by intentionally slowing down, we can combat this and improve both our mental and physical health.

They also explore the importance of quality time and relationships, especially in the face of workplace stress. While there is still a mentality in some workplaces that one must do a million things at once, being intentional and focusing on the quality of our time and relationships is what really counts.

They discuss the three pillars that can help us create a more intentional and slower lifestyle: intentionality, quality, and conscious effort. By adopting these pillars, we can reduce FOMO and improve our mental health and productivity.

Finally, they offer some practical tips and suggestions for slowing down and being more mindful in our daily lives, such as taking deep breaths and turning off the TV during our commute. By focusing on these small changes and habit creation, we can sustainably achieve a slower lifestyle and improve our overall wellbeing.

Are you a man who struggles to open up about your feelings? You're not alone. It's a common problem many men face, but don't worry because there is progress in breaking down that barrier. In our latest episode, Tom had the pleasure of connecting with Dr. Natalie Flatt to discuss men's health, particularly with Men's Health Week coming up.

Dr Natalie emphasises the importance of checking in with our emotions, and how language plays a critical role in many areas of men's mental health. She discusses how Affect Labelling is the science behind talking about emotions, which comes from our evolution and survival mechanism. Our brain tells us to either fight or flight when we feel threatened, leading to anxiety and anger.

Men's mental health can suffer when they believe there's only one solution to their problems. That's why self-check-ins and expanding our emotional vocabulary is essential to identifying emotions during threatening situations.

So, if you're ready to take the first step towards better mental health, listen to this episode now. It's informative and engaging, with plenty of insights into how men can break down the barriers and connect with their emotions.

Welcome back to Timeout With Tom. This episode features Samuel Eddy, founder, principal consultant and educator at Openchange. Samuel Eddy has helped small, medium and large organisations across Australia boost employee mental health and wellbeing and reduce stress in one-off guest speaking wellness events, ongoing group training and one-on-one coaching sessions.

Samuel discusses the stress temperature check tool, which can be used every day to become more aware of stress levels and create well-being anchors. The stress temperature check measures how much nervous tension is in the body or system at any one time. He suggests that understanding physical symptoms of stress, behavioural changes, and other indicators can help individuals determine their stress temperature. Ideally, people should aim to spend as much time in the green zone, where their mind is calm and focused on the present. However, it is also important to recognise and manage stress levels in the yellow zone, where people are more decisive and productive, to prevent slipping into the orange or red zone, where burnout can occur.

Samuel also shares his personal experience of ignoring warning signs and mistaking high stress levels for normal.

We are excited to present our newest 4-part mini-series, Courageous Women Leaders, featuring high-performance consultant Poppy Griffiths. Tune in as we engage in insightful conversations around these four key subjects:

  • Tapping into self-awareness and strengths for success
  • The power of vulnerability to show up as our best selves
  • Using empathy for A+ leadership
  • Building Resilience to bounce back from setback

In this episode, Tom and Poppy discuss the topic of resilience and how it affects our lives. They address the common misconception that resilience is something that only some people possess and argue that it's a learned skill that can grow as we face challenges and stress. Poppy explains that resilience is not just about bouncing back from setbacks, but it's also an outlook that we can develop to help us focus on the important things in life.

Poppy emphasises the importance of recognizing our own imperfections and differences, which can help us become more compassionate and curious about ourselves and others. She highlights that resilience isn't just for the few with strong inner strength, but it's attainable for all of us. The duo shares their own experiences of facing challenges and setbacks, and how they have learned to cultivate resilience over time.

Listeners can expect to gain valuable insights and actionable tips on how to build resilience, such as developing a growth mindset, building a support network, and practicing self-care. Overall, this episode provides a powerful reminder that resilience is not a fixed trait, but a skill that can be cultivated and strengthened over time.

  • Tapping into self-awareness and strengths for success
  • The power of vulnerability to show up as our best selves
  • Using empathy for A+ leadership
  • Building Resilience to bounce back from setback

In this episode, we explore the topic of empathy and empathetic leadership. Poppy discusses the importance of empathy in today's hybrid work environment and breaks down what empathy truly means.

Empathy is our ability to see the world through other people's eyes. It involves being compassionate to their feelings and emotions and requires us to put our own egos aside. Self-awareness is also key to empathy as it allows us to recognise our own imperfections and be more curious and compassionate towards the imperfections and differences of others.

Poppy also touches on the neuroscience behind empathy, with the emotional centre of our brain perceiving the feelings of others and the cognitive centre of our brain working to understand and help them. Empathy is a vital skill for leaders to cultivate as it allows them to connect with their teams on a deeper level, understand their needs and perspectives, and ultimately drive better results. Tune in to this episode to learn more about empathy and how to become a more empathetic leader.

  • Tapping into self-awareness and strengths for success
  • The power of vulnerability to show up as our best selves

In today's episode, we discuss the concept of courageous leadership with Poppy, who believes that everyone has the potential to be a leader regardless of their gender, job role, or career path. We explore how anyone can develop the courage to find their potential and positively impact their own lives and the lives of others.

Some key points from today's conversation:

  • We are all leaders with unique talents that we can use to make positive contributions in our families, communities, and organisations.
  • Courageous leadership is about taking responsibility for finding potential in ourselves and others, and having the courage to develop it in any situation, even when we can't control or predict the outcome.
  • Doubts and fears are a natural part of being human, but they can fuel negative thoughts and limit our ability to make a positive impact.
  • By being courageous in how we lead ourselves and influence others, we can build deeper connections and relationships, perform at our best individually and collectively, and ultimately be happier.

Did you know 8 out of 10 people experience back pain in their life?

It certainly is a harrowing statistic and one that needs to be addressed.

Sometimes with pain comes fear of movement which can lead to seeing a well intended health practitioner that says 'you have the back of an 80 year old' or 'gee you are as stiff as a board' thus unintentionally feeding that fear avoidance.

I'm pleased to be joined by Bart De Vries, Founder of Limber. Bart is a Physiotherapist by background and the kiwi inventor behind Limber.

He has applied his knowledge and passion for human behaviour and movement to help address the statistics around pain with a holistic solution that you can move with.

In this chat, we will hear about Bart's journey of invention, we will talk about what is wrong with the desks we currently use. We will unpack some of the myths around posture and pain and Bart gives some insights on the trend of standing desks and how your best posture is your next posture.

Bart de Vries is the Founder of Limber and the creator of the world's healthiest desk, according to professors at the University of Berkeley California. As a qualified physio Bart was sick of seeing people return to the environments that were injuring them. So he created Limber to treat the root causes of back pain, creating products to promote movement, increase knowledge and promote a positive relationship with our backs - all in ways that are good for us and the planet.

We're excited to be hosting a special podcast with Nitin Govila, a Management Leader, Entrepreneur, Engineer and Meditation Trainer. He is the APAC MENA MD for the French manufacturing group Serge Ferrari, a leader in the flexible composite material sector. His scope of operations covers: Japan, Korea, China, Hongkong, India, ASEAN, Australia-NZ, Middle-East & Africa. In our chat, we discuss:

Nitin's career in design/architecture and how became interested in meditation? We talk about spaces and, in particular, what the key trends in aesthetic design for office spaces, commercial real estate right now? (given the fact that they need to be super appealing to bring people back to office!) There is a lot of considerations for design and its impact on mental wellness.  How does noise impact mental health? Thermal comfort and lighting are other elements, so how can workplaces create sustainable workspaces that enhance mental health. The big challenge for organisations right now is ensuring that office days are fit for collaboration, but are also highly productive!  What are some important key elements from a design perspective? We love this question:  "Fast forward 10 years, what does the future of work look like?"

How do you ritualise action when it comes to your wellbeing? I chat with so many inspiring people each month and one thing that stands out when it comes to high performers is that they do the boring basics well and find unique ways to stay on track. I'm joined by Hussein for Part 2 of our Pinnacle Performance Club series to discuss ritualising action. Hussein Hamka is a genuine book of knowledge when it comes to the practical application of behavioural science and habit creation. In this discussion we will discuss common ways to ritualise action, patterns of behaviour that disrupt said ritualisation and finally address how managers can lead and facilitate healthy change for their teams.

The old adage “what you can measure, you can manage” certainly rings true when it comes to workplace wellbeing - especially right now.

Clearly, the last two years have thrown up their fair share of wellbeing challenges for all of us, and particularly workplaces.

On a positive note, the health and wellbeing of employees has risen to the top of the agenda for most organisations (finally and this has been powerful for recognition and awareness of employee wellbeing.

On the flipside, however, it has also proven an overwhelming time for many HR or health, safety and wellbeing leaders, as they juggle:

  • Balancing health and wellbeing interventions for mental, physical, financial and social wellbeing pillars
  • Justifying the wellbeing budget, with ROI and data measurement related to employee health
  • Trying to “engage the disengaged” - and encourage high-risk employees towards awareness and healthy behavioural change
  • The Great Resignation, with huge resources being spent in simply attracting or retaining great people

In this Podcast, we are excited to introduce Josh Lambert, Director of Pinnacle Health Group.

Josh is a wellbeing entrepreneur, physiotherapist, speaker, and co-owner of Pinnacle Health Group. He is a workplace wellbeing leader and advocate, and along with hosting regular master classes and events and being featured on wellbeing panels and published for wellbeing articles in publications such as Men's Fitness Magazine and the AFR.

Josh was part of the challenging journey of shaping Australia's first corporate wellness centre at ANZ Bank in 2010, and rapidly growing employee wellbeing programs to support workplaces including Westpac, AFL, Deloitte, AGL and EY.

Josh's current role involves consulting many of Australia's largest workplaces on their employee wellbeing strategy - which includes mapping out an annual calendar of health initiatives delivered by the PHG team.

Josh's belief is that workplaces and organisations are, not only responsible for the wellbeing of their own employees, but for inspiring healthy change in teams, families, communities and society as a whole.

  • In the Podcast, Josh and Tom discuss the key assessments and data points that can be captured using health assessments.
  • What the difference is between health and skin assessments
  • What the future of assessments might look like in the future of work
  • How healthy behaviour changes can be facilitated and influenced by health assessments for the workplace

Podcasting perk number 1 - meeting amazingly talented people from all over the globe!

Tom had the pleasure of interviewing the talented Melissa Doman, M.A. Organisational Psych and Author of a great book called "Yes you can talk about mental health at work, here’s why and how to do it really well"

The book is like a step-by-step guide with practical tasks where Melissa shows us how to challenge biases and perceptions and, most importantly, the tools on how to have open discussion as managers or colleagues and much more. It is such a great read and I’d highly recommend it.

Melissa Joined Tom all the way from Denver, USA and was recently named in the LinkedIn top voices on #mentalhealth I we're thrilled to be sharing this podcast with the Well Workplaces community.

What does great management and leadership feel like to you?

With leaders and managers juggling their way through rapid change this year - the critical human skills and perspective shifting skill level of the manager is so important.

It reminds me a lot of the six thinking hats by Dr Edward De Bono where being cognitively flexible is the game!

I'm excited to introduce Marnie Jones to the Well Workplaces community.

Marnie Jones is the Director of Talent X - The People Agency - a hybrid of recruitment and consultancy that is a bottom up and top down approach to building overachieving teams.

Marnie started her career when she was 19. For 10 years she worked as a management consultant helping companies from $200k to $130m turnover get the most out of their businesses. At 23 she was the Head Consultant for a small boutique firm in Sydney where she managed a team of consultants.

She believes that these three things are the most important thing for developing high performance teams. Hiring reliable, overachieving employees. Designing and organising the team & its workflow and leveraging and retaining the staff through great management.

I'm really intrigued as to how Marnie got her early career thriving so quickly in the management consulting firm. In the discussion we will talk about how many organisations are trying hard to hire top talent right now, and how businesses can overcome any barriers.

We will discuss how managers can retain and improve team culture in the current climate. Finally I'm really interested in Marnie's 7 manager archetypes and how leaders can apply this to help optimise engagement, longevity and happiness of their team.

What manager Archetype are you?

Do you know much about the science of breathing? Me neither.

What is it about the Wim Hof Method and cold exposure that enhances performance exactly?

I'm keen to find out why by interviewing my pal, Reis Paluso, CEO of Our Breath Collective who joins me from San Diego, California.

About Reis

From summiting mountains in Poland in sub-zero temperatures (wearing only shorts!) to better handling the daily stress of being a father and being a serial entrepreneur, breathwork has been the catalyst for Reis to find his inner-strength and hone in on his passions.

By sharing progressive, yet simple practices to help upgrade one’s life, Reis is focused on bringing a multidisciplinary approach to breathing where individuals are empowered to build their own self-regulatory tool kit.

So naturally, I'm interested in asking Reis about the science of breathing and cold exposure therapy and how corporate athletes (you!) can benefit from trying breathwork to, not only downregulate ourselves under stress, but to gain mental clarity and enhance performance.

As a breathwork enthusiast, I am really excited to be chatting with Reis on this fascinating topic.

Have you ever tried cold showers or breathwork?

This is our final podcast of the working parents mini-series and it's a goodie! We're back with Poppy Griffiths and Tom's asking the big questions, like "what do you think stops women from leaning into what they want at work?"

Poppy believes there is an undercurrent of family demands that drag us down to the weeds and it impedes on what we want in life (that possibly is a successful career).

Maybe women often feel like they only have themselves to blame for the imbalance in work and life. On one hand, they do want a successful career, but do also feel this undercurrent of home demands.

For a lot of working women, this does sound familiar?

Ask yourself: "What is holding me back by way of demands from a family perspective?" We hope you enjoy this episode.

Has the imposter monster caught up with you over the last few months?

You know the feeling.

The understating of your hard work and effort to succeed in what you do.

The feeling like you don't belong in the room.

Interestingly, the Advancing the Future of Women in Business: The 2020 KPMG Women's Leadership Summit Report showed that a whopping 75% of women executives have experienced imposter syndrome in their careers. To tackle this topic Dr. Natalie Flatt Ph.D and Tom Bosna will be breaking down the topic of imposter syndrome.

They tackle why women feel imposter syndrome more than men and discuss personal experiences with this, as well as addressing key strategies to overcome this feeling.

We can break this bias in our workplaces.

Sit less. Move more.

Over the years, it has become obvious that majority of workers seen in clinics suffer from chronic factors due to reduced movement, improper stress management, and limited exposure to natural environments. This leads to pain, immunosuppression, and reduced happiness.

With the mix of hybrid working continuing globally, we're super excited to connect with Dr Stefan Zavalin from Tennessee, USA. Dr Zavalin is the most passionate person we've ever met on the topic of how to simply sit less and move more.

In this episode of the Well Workplaces podcast, Tom chats with Dr Stefan Zavalin, International TEDx speaker and CEO of Love to move.

Dr Zavalin is a passionate speaker and shares the following on the podcast:

  • His journey of completing a Doctorate in Physical Therapy while becoming legally blind.
  • He shares some of the common presentations he would see while working in private practice as a physical therapist in the US
  • We discuss how our work culture and environment affects our physiology and why exercise does not fix all of it. This is a really excellent discussion and everyone needs to know this!
  • He shares why cultural changes around movement at work are more important than changing the physical environment or buying away the problem.
  • Dr Stefan shares some wonderful tips and actionable steps to alternating the amount of sitting time at work

With organisations facing the challenge of talent attraction and the great resignation/realignment well underway. Now is the perfect time for businesses to reassess their workspaces.

We're very pleased to introduce Angela Ferguson the Co-founder & Managing Director of Future X Collective, a workplace consultancy.

Future X Collective researched over 9000 Australian workers to assess what role the ‘office’ will play in the future of work and this research won a 2021 Good Design Award.

We know that the workplace is much more than a physical space, it has to be productive, sustainable, innovative, and unique to an organisation’s culture.

Angela has over 20 years’ experience working with Google, PwC, REA Group, Johnson and Johnson, MYOB and is currently undertaking her PhD in Architecture and Urban Design.

We speak with Angela to learn a bit more about what the research findings are telling us about the future of work, how workplaces can actually design for productivity and performance and talk best practice industry examples from her consulting experience.

2020 demonstrated the importance of resilience and how it impacts our day-to-day lives. Well Workplaces is excited to partner with icare NSW to bring you a live workplace health and safety panel discussion.

Three Paralympians will join Tom Bosna and share their stories of how they have overcome adversity to achieve their personal and professional goals.

Joany Badenhorst, Grant Mizens OAM and John Marshall detail their life-changing workplace accident, journey of recovery and return to work, and their road to becoming a Paralympian. They open up about the challenges of living with disability and re-entering the workforce and also discuss how organisations can best support those returning to work after an injury and ways to create an inclusive culture.

With a passionate panel of speakers, this event will empower you and your teams to build resiliency. Our panellists demonstrate that with the support of others, an injury can be a new beginning; a person can recover and go on to contribute to a workplace and the community or, like in their own life stories, become a top-performing athlete.

All three panellists are part of icare NSW's Paralympian Speakers Program, which provides icare customers with access to Paralympians who have been affected by workplace injury to talk to their team free of charge.

It sure is interesting to note that two out of five Australians struggle with sleep on regular basis. That includes getting to sleep and staying asleep. That's a whopping 10.3 million Australians not napping for the recommended 7 to 9 hours.

We know that sleeping, rest and restoration are vital to our overall well-being and Dr. Natalie Flatt Ph.D and Tom talk about how to get to sleep, stay asleep and the key reasons why some people are struggling with this issue. Sometimes you just have to see the good in everything.    They say everything happens for a reason.   They say you’ll get over it.   And finally good vibes only.    What do all of these statements have in common?   They are actually quite toxic.  In a world that froths on the pursuit of happiness, it seems quite obvious how the simplification of our feelings can leave people feeling a bit well ‘blah’.   You only need to look up hashtag #goodvibesonly on Instagram and you will be hit with a massive 15.3 million posts of perfectly angled pictures that highlight perfection and happiness.   What about the other vibes that exist in the human experience?   Dr. Natalie Flatt Ph.D and Tom Bosna are excited to be tackling the topic of toxic positivity in this episode.  We dissect the topic of toxic positivity, discuss practical examples of how this plays out in relationships and workplaces   We will also tackle some strategies on how to deal with toxic positivity in the workplace and discuss how leaders can approach this to support their team members.   We promise to bring the #goodvibesonly and Tom to never use the word vibes in real life interactions in future.   ~ Connect with Dr. Natalie Flatt Ph.D of Connect Psych Services About Well Workplaces Well Workplaces is a movement by Pinnacle Health Group and our vision is for a world where workplaces lead and create healthier communities.  Well Workplaces podcast has been designed to create genuine wellbeing conversations in the workplace and share expert knowledge in practical ways. The Chief Wellbeing Officer update is a fortnightly insight column by Tom Bosna, which he writes on LinkedIn and for the Well Workplaces community. For the second CWO, the question is - do you have the right to disconnect in the workplace? The Eight Hours workday Act was passed for Victoria and New South Wales, Australia in 1916. Fast forward to now and the Fourth industrial Revolution is in full effect and the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds are getting pretty darn blurry - especially at work! Throw in a global pandemic, add in the eight hour work mindset and then stir in Mark Zuckerberg talking about the Metaverse and things are feeling pretty damn weird (I personally prefer Icelandverse). So back to the question - do you have the right to disconnect at your work? Are you kicking off the year with a toasted cheese sandwich lunch habit that you need to shake?

We're excited to be talking with Dr. Natalie Flatt Ph.D on the topic of working through the science on how food and mood are connected.

At the start of the year, it is quite common for most of use to endeavour to 'eat better' and it normally comes from a place of wanting to lose weight.

A growing body of science in the field of cognitive nutrition shows that food-brain connection is actually one of the most powerful drivers of our overall wellbeing.

Natalie and Tom talk about emotional eating, some of the interesting science around the food and mood connection, as well as touch on burnout and nutrition.

A vision board, goal setting, planning to make a plan, a new diary, positive affirmation and a fresh start.

These are all the things that I associate with the start of the year. Often we start the year great intentions but fail to strike up long term motivation to make it rain all year round. These things either excite you like a kid being told they run fast in there new pair of shoes or makes you roll your eyes and think, not this 'new year, new me' toxic positivity shite again.

While most of us find ourselves returning to work remotely - Dr. Natalie Flatt Ph.D and Tom Bosna are kicking off the year to talk about motivation in this episode. It's totally OK - not to feel super pumped and highly motivated just because the calendar has changed over to January. During this discussion, we will explore the psychology of intrinsic motivation, what it is and how it can help us. We will discuss how to cultivate motivation using some proven strategies and tactics used by high performers, especially while many of us work from home to start the year.

I'm excited to chat with Dr. Natalie Flatt Ph.D on the topic of

Welcome to Season 3

Thanks for tuning in for Season 3 of the Well Workplaces Podcast.  A season dedicated to one of our biggest resources - our mental health.

In this season, Tom is excited to be hosting Dr Natalie Flatt who is the Co-Founder of Connect Psych Services.

This episode reached all parts of the world and resonated with so many members of our audience.

So, Dr Natalie Flatt and Tom Bosna are partnering up on the whole season, where we are going to be breaking down some of those more conceptual ideas in the mental health space and break them down into more self-help style, advice-based episodes that are actionable.

We can build on our own resilience, tool kits and strategies to help us all rebound and recover through what has been a very challenging time globally. A big, thank you to our supporters and listeners who've helped facilitate and create the well workplaces community.

The great resignation.

Have you heard of this term yet?

With the past 18 months changing how some people think about life, work, and what they want out of both. Now is a perfect time for leaders, business owners and employers to stop and reflect.

With workforce anxiety well documented, leaders should review their communication and relationship building capacity. One of the best wellbeing strategies for workplaces is clear communication.

Introducing Debra Roberts, LCSW, conversation expert, trauma consultant, and developer of The Relationship Protocol® communication model coming to us live from New York City.

Magazine and has been featured in other major media publications, including The New York Times, Real Simple, Business Insider, and The Cut.

I'm excited to introduce Debra to the Well Workplaces community to talk about The Great Resignation, why misunderstandings are one of the biggest issues in workplaces and how leaders can communicate with clarity, reduce misunderstandings and lead dynamically during these times.

We would love to hear what think is the core issue behind the great resignation?

When was the last time you checked in with a friend and really listened?

If there is one positive to come from this year, it is that we are more open to speak about our mental health and wellbeing.

With the media starting to reference the shadow pandemic and more attention on this topic, I am really excited to speak with James Hatchman, CEO of Voice of Health.

Voice of Health is a preventative mental health organisation that has developed a social platform that provides a safe place where you can share ideas with others, talk one-on-one with someone that understands you, talk without fear of judgement and utilise wellbeing-tools that develop strategies to self manage your own mental wellbeing.

Voice of Health attends to the need for an effective preventative mental health solution in the Australian and global community. We value the importance of lived experience, empathy, power of perspective and self-managing your mental well-being.

A number of other barriers exist that prevent people from seeking support for their mental health. These include availability of healthcare professionals, location, time, financial restrictions, stigma concerns, preference to self-manage, physical challenge or disability. We are here to eliminate those barriers.

In this episode, James Hatchman and Tom Bosna discuss:

  • Why Voice of Health was created and the market it serves
  • The key elements of active listening
  • How active listening in a peer to peer model can improve mental health
  • How the active listening course can improve mental health dialogue
  • The future goals of Voice of Health and its application for the workplace

You can enroll in Voice of Health's active listening training for free, here.

I know people are reluctant to speak to lawyers, especially when under stress and financial pressure, but the value of great advice is underrated.

In this episode, Tom Bosna and Katie Richards talk about:

  • Katie's expertise as a commercial lawyer and her passion for accessible legal help being a human right
  • How legal issues impact people's personal wellbeing and their performance at work
  • How access to legal help could fit into the current employee wellbeing support framework
  • The top stressors at the moment for employees and employers
  • The rapidly changing workplace and considerations for employees and employers to manage risks

About Katie Richards

Entrepreneur, Lawyer, Educator and Innovator. Katie is a commercial solicitor passionate about systematisation and efficiency. As a previous commercial legal advisor to corporations like Domino's Pizza, National Australia Bank, GE Mining and Ecowash Mobile both in Australia and in the USA, Europe and Middle East, Katie's legal experience spans a variety of commercial matters and her ability to identify issues and opportunities, strategize a cost-considered and risk-mitigated approach and execute has been finely tuned. Having transacted in culturally sensitive environments, Katie is experienced in providing advice on commercial contracts which is socially considerate.

As a strong advocate for the provision of access to legal services Australia-wide regardless of financial position or geographical location, Katie set about the establishment of Virtual Legal, driving a high-energy team of lawyers to provide standard legal services through an online platform allowing clients to have legal work done without leaving their home or office. The use of the latest technology and systematisation of all processes within the corporation has given Katie's team the ability to charge only competitive fixed fees for residential conveyancing, commercial conveyancing, retail leasing, commercial leasing, business sales, business purchases, buying franchises, selling franchises, setting up franchises, wills and estates services, drafting agreements for small businesses (i.e. employment agreements, privacy policies, terms and conditions, supply agreements and several other commercial agreements) and setting up new companies and trusts.

How long have you been sitting there?

Another day of back-to-back Zoom calls with little time for movement breaks?

We know this sedentary behaviour often leads to fatigue, disengagement, low mood, lack of focus and an uncomfortable, aching body – all of which can be very costly.

In this episode, Tom speaks with the inspiring Lizzy Williamson, Founder of Two Minute Moves to talk:

  • Lizzy's experience with post-natal depression and how she used nostalgia and movement to help her re-establish a self care routine
  • The science and art of a well-crafted movement break
  • Step-by-step breakdown on how to create a micro-break movement in your working day
  • The step-by-step requirements to set up a sustainable habit of movement
  • The future of workplace events

About Lizzy Williamson

Dubbed by the US media as ‘the excuse-buster from Down-Under’, and as the founder of Two Minute Moves, I’m on a mission to help people integrate little moments of movement in their day to transform the way they work and feel.

Two Minute Moves came about from my experience of finding exercise and self-care almost impossible to do when I had post-natal depression. I couldn’t find the motivation, the time, the energy, in fact, it was the last thing I felt like doing. But what I discovered saved and changed my life. I made a decision that might not have felt like like much, but, in fact, made a big difference.

Now, with over fifteen years of experience, as a fitness presenter and personal trainer, plus the regular fitness expert on Australian television, I share my Two Minute Moves with companies, conferences and individuals around the world to help people discover the transformation a little moment of movement can make.

Lizzy is a certified Personal Trainer, Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, Presenter, Speaker and contributor to MindBodyGreen, The BubHub, BellaMumma and more. Her workouts have been featured in Lorna Jane's YouTube channel, news.com.au plus many other fabulous online publications, programs and blogs. Her 2 Minute Workouts get sent each week for free to thousands of women who have become part of her community. She has been up on stage speaking and getting audiences off their chairs and moving at Mindd, IIN, Mum Society and more.

How do we live our best and healthiest life?

We all know we should eat right, move regularly and look after our mental wellbeing.

The big question is how do we turn this into daily action, ritual and positive mindset.

In Episode 18, we are lucky enough to have one of Australia's leading Corporate Wellness Speakers Bec Mitchell

In this episode Bec and Tom discuss:

  • How Bec fell into Physiotherapy and found her passion in speaking and educating corporate clients across Australia
  • How an unfortunate car accident lead to Bec becoming a more active, healthier and happier person
  • The morning ritual that will set you up for a thriving day
  • The key issues in the workplace right now and some strategies for companies to work through
  • How the focus on employee wellbeing has been a silver lining for 2020/21
  • The value of human connection and relationships in the evolving workplace model

About Bec Mitchell

‘How do we live our best life?’

This question led me to first gain my Bachelors Degree in Physiotherapy at the University of Melbourne in 2010, and now to completing my Masters in Psychology and Neuroscience.

For the first 7 years of my career as a Physiotherapist I was fortunate enough to learn the importance of evidence-based medicine as I worked alongside some of Australia’s top surgeons, sports doctors, dietitians and physios at Olympic Park Sports Medicine.

But still the existential questions continued to burn inside me… so I went on to do further study in meditation teaching, nutrition and psychology.

And what I learnt through my personal experience and my studies is this:

Exercise and eating well isn’t just for athletes, and 6 packs are the least exciting benefit they offer.

Evidence-based wellbeing helps us think clearer, be more creative, focus more effectively, enhances our mood, and allows us to give more to the world. And isn’t that what life is about?

So now I work with wonderful organisations like CBA, Westpac, EY, General Assembly and The Australian Army to help spread this message.

My aim is to help people like you access the science of healthy habits so you can use your brain to it’s full ability, and maybe even get a little happier along the way.

How would you design a workplace if you had the (benefit?) of Covid-19 hindsight and this new hybrid work flow we are all in right now?

In episode 17, Josh Lambert interviews Graeme Scannell who is the Head of Workplace Experience at MYOB.

Graeme was in charge of designing the amazing new digs for the MYOB team at their state-of-the-art Melbourne HQ, which was able to be adapted and modified through rapid change due to Covid-19.

Graeme talks to Josh about his passion for workplace design, the need for flexibility and adaptability of the workplace to suit all employees, and the linkage between workplace design and our overall wellbeing.

Nutrition is the foundation of a great working day.

Do you agree? 🥗

In episode 16, Tom Bosna interviews Karla Borland who is the CEO of Morsl.

  • Karla founded Morsl after working many years working in Finance
  • Karla remembered working long hours and having issues with finding healthy snacks at work
  • Morsl was born out of the vision to create healthy changes through healthy eating
  • Australia's first micro-market is high tech and a self-service automated food and drink marketplace that fits within a workplace.
  • Morsl is employee centric with a focus on 80/20 principle to nutrition.

Connect with hosts Tom Bosna and Josh Lambert and we would love your feedback so please rate us on Apple podcast so we can be of service to you.

About Karla:

After 17 years in the banking industry, having worked in Sydney, Singapore and Zurich, I left my role as a Director of Credit Suisse and found Morsl in 2018. Morsl offers Australia's first self-service food and drink market for workplaces.

The idea for Morsl was borne out of a daily frustration of trying to eat healthy in the office. I wanted to eat healthy, but I was time poor and I didn’t have the knowledge to read nutritional labels. I always ended up at the vending machine every afternoon buying a coke and chocolate.

After analysing the market in Australia, I realised there was a gap in how corporates provide their staff with access to healthy food options in a way which is integrated and sustainable for employees. Providing staff with seminars on nutrition and cooking classes is a fantastic form of education but our Morsl markets now allow them to put those learnings into practice on a daily basis.

Morl's mission is to have a real impact on employee health by improving the eating habits of employees.

Episode #5 // Is resistance training the best anti-aging intervention on the planet?

We have all seen Physiotherapists for many different reasons. Sometimes it is simply for pain relief and other times it is for rehabilitation of an injured area. For modern day health practitioners there is a growing body of evidence that points towards the benefits of exercise therapy in maintaining optimal health and preventing a range of chronic diseases. In fact, almost 25% of the worlds adults are classified as physically inactive - its a big issue and it is interesting that almost everyone knows that exercise is good for them but some of us simply do not get enough movement in our day.

This is where our expert Riain Casey comes in. Riain is the definition of a modern-day health practitioners that sees his role as a Physiotherapist as much more than pain relief and in fact he defines his purpose as to facilitate movement through physical activity promotion.

The big question for Riain is how should we train and why

In Episode 5, Riain Casey drops so many knowledge bombs on all things resistance training and physical wellbeing.

  • Riain shares his journey from Ireland to Australia and his experience in treating people in various life stages from couch potato, to athletes, corporate and elderly.
  • He shares a story about realising the huge benefits of strength training during University and how he worked with one of Irelands most respected strength and conditioning groups to learn his craft.
  • Riain discusses how resistance training in its basic form can be done by most of us with very little equipment
  • He talks about the top five ingredients for any resistance programs
  • He shares the analogy that resistance training is the best anti-aging cream going around and all the amazing benefits
  • Riain talks about how in 2020, he has had to adapt and pivot in his Physiotherapy role and how soft skills and exercise prescription have allowed him to navigate telehealth and corporate programmes

This was such a detailed and passionate discussion between Riain and Tom that I think you'll agree that we should unpack further topics from this man.
