God help me hear you and respond to you.The Word of God contains both Law and Gospel. While the reading of Moses’ Teaching contained Law, which always accuses the hearers of their sins and brings them sorrow and contrition, the Pentateuch also contains magnificent Gospel promises of forgiveness and the Messiah, which bring joy to the penitent sinner. It is joy in the Gospel that is the believer’s ultimate strength. Nehemiah’s encouragement, reinforced by the Levites, pointed the people to the comforting Gospel, so that the joy of Yahweh overcame their sorrow, and they celebrated the day.

The life of grace is not an effort on our part to achieve a goal we set ourselves. The picture we need to have in our minds, therefore, should rather be this. The false prophet is a man who comes to us, and who at first has the appearance of being everything that could be desired. He is nice and pleasing and pleasant; he appears to be thoroughly Christian, and seems to say the right things. His teaching in general is quite all right and he uses many terms that should be used and employed by a true Christian teacher. He talks about God, he seems to be saying everything that a Christian should say. He is obviously in sheep’s clothing, and his way of living seems to correspond. So, you do not suspect that there is anything wrong at all; there is nothing that at once attracts your attention or arouses your suspicions, nothing glaringly wrong.

Paul has never met the Roman church, far less the greater population of Rome. So in what sense is he in debt to them? It is illustrative to think about how I can be in debt to you. First, you may have lent me $100—and I am in debt to you until I pay it back. But second, someone else may have given me $100 to pass on to you—and I am in debt to you until I hand it on. It is in this second sense that Paul is “obligated” to everyone, everywhere. God has shared the gospel with him. But God has also commissioned him to declare it to others. So Paul owes people the gospel.

They stand condemned now. And here is the beauty of the text: “Now is the acceptable time.” Most unconverted hearers do not believe this. Some claim they must think about it. But what will be the result of their thinking? After they have thought so much, are we to imagine they will think themselves into salvation? Others say they cannot be in a hurry to make a decision. A hurry? What did the psalmist say? “I hurried, not hesitating to keep your commands” ( Psalm 119:60 ). When a person is on the edge of damnation or the borders of the grave, do not talk hurry; when it is a case of life and death, let us be quick to make a decision. Still, others claim they do not feel prepared to make a decision at this time, as if living another month in sin would make them more prepared to believe. Others may say their heart feels hard. Nothing in the Word of God leads us to believe in any way soften our own hearts. This is a mighty work of grace. Hearts that have been exposed to the gospel and rejected it will certainly grow harder in the course of time, not softer. The text says, “Now is the acceptable time”; it does not say, “There is an acceptable time lasting through a period of weeks, months, or years.”

We need to be reminded of this, because it is almost incredible how listless we can become while calling ourselves Christians. Little by little our whole orientation can become inward. We can go for months and years and not think about those who perish. We become so dull and spiritually callous that we don’t even ask if we believe in hell or lostness or the preciousness of Christ and the power of the cross and the freeness of the gospel and the command of Jesus. We just go about our in-house religious business like a medical clinic that sees fewer and fewer patients and has more and more staff meetings, until there is nothing left but a smooth running program for the doctors and nurses and their families. That is what happens to many churches.”
