“No one ever finds life worth living—one has to make it worth living.” — Winston Churchill The Living With Chronic Mental Illness Podcast documents the story of my atypical mental illness. It’s my journey to managing chronic schizoaffective disorder. It’s the story of challenging moments, of failures, of successes, of love, of loss, and of hope. This is the story of how ignorance lost its bliss. This podcast is for anyone who is “curious,” or for those of us who are living with a chronic mental illness—that includes the caregivers (and friends and family) of anyone dealing with a chronic mental illness. You are ALL my fabulous friends.

For this bonus episode, I submit to you a song I wrote. The term "Skeezer" is NOT meant to be derogatory. It's a word that a friend of mine has affectionally touted around for years (and, it seems to have stuck)! I hope the crux of the song is helpful and gives everyone hope.

The lyrics:

Full disclosure, I’m mentally ill. Don’t ask me how I do it. I just do it. I do my best each and every day.

When someone says we all have something
They’re not wrong, but there’s often layers that are troubling
It’s not a comparison game, but it is a bit more serious
To have schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or what have you
And, act as if it’s nothing

Skeezer (And, I’ve Got the Papers to Prove It)
What on Earth can I do about it?
Well, I’ve done things that many only dream of in my situation
Taken up hobbies, where some give back and some help to express myself

Skeezer (And, I’ve Got the Papers to Prove It)
What does that mean exactly?
It means, for me, I am struggling a bit more most days
But, I try and I have hope to get through it
No matter what they say, I fight. Not always good. Not always bad.

SOLO

I take my medication I take it fast and quick
Twice a day, 10 pills, all just for this
Yes it could be worse, I could be unmedicated, and in fear all the time
Instead, I am medicated and in fear only half the time

Skeezer (And, I’ve Got the Papers to Prove It)
What on Earth can I do about it?
Well, I’ve done things that many only dream of in my situation
Taken up hobbies, where some give back and some help to express myself

Skeezer (And, I’ve Got the Papers to Prove It)
What does that mean exactly?
It means, for me, I am struggling a bit more most days
But, I try and I have hope to get through it
No matter what they say, I fight. Not always good. Not always bad.

20 years in and I’m still doing my best. Fight on. Fight on. Fight on.

I have had a tough go of being in touch with my family, for the majority of the past five years.
It has been difficult for me. I’ve dealt with a lot of anger. I’ve had a lot paranoia. And, a considerable amount of sadness.
But today, things are on the upswing. And, I’ve reunited with most everyone who wanted to be connected, no matter the level.

Today and everyday—these three things:
1. I am a work in progress.
2. I am lucky to have meds.
3. I focus on the good in my life.
You are not alone. There are a lot of people who struggle, to get along, to make sense of the world. Some people have mental health diagnoses and some do not.

Today’s a brand new day to work on your life and make better choices.
My name is Mike and I love to write poetry, make music, and work on my mental health podcast.
Officially, I am diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder (depressive type), and I see a psychiatrist and take several medications, both of which help me to have a life.
I am married. My wife and I live a quiet existence, and enjoy spending time with our three dogs.
Regarding my mental health podcast, I discuss ways in which I am coping from day to day and week to week. Each episode is approximately 5 minutes long, and the podcast is called, “Living with Chronic Mental Illness.”
As far as making music goes, I write full-fledged songs. I do this periodically. I write lyrics, sing them, and create backing tracks.
I am sharing this bit of information about myself, with the hopes that my story is helpful to someone, somewhere.
So, please subscribe to and share “Living with Chronic Mental Illness,” which is available on Apple, Spotify, and wherever you get your podcasts.

"Today, I accept that things are the way they are, and I will do my best to manage them.

I am proud of myself for realizing that life is difficult, but having peace of mind is within my reach.

I know who I am, and I am capable of good things.

I am a goal setter, and I can work through many of my life’s challenges.

The past is the past, and I have surrendered my cynicism, and will now focus my efforts on the present and in being more positive.

My hard work will make me more resilient. My hard work will make me more capable. My hard work will make me more proud of who I am, and of what I’ve set out to do.

I am working on my energy levels, and make no mistake about it, I can and do feel those emotions that help me to do the best I can in my life.

I am worthy. And, I surround myself with people who appreciate me, my value, and my friendship. And, who support me unconditionally.

Today, I will take on the world, my world, by taking life, my life one step at a time."

What is there to say about courage?

Specifically, the handling of fear by being courageous?

Well, for me, there is a lot to say!

I’m probably as far along in life as I am, primarily due to me facing my fears, which is part an act of rebellion and part being courageous.

In this episode, I tackle the specifics of what facing your fears can do for you!

In this episode, I tackle the importance of letting people know where you stand by being assertive in your communication.

Not at all to be confused with being aggressive, being assertive is a valuable skill that can be learned—if you don’t already know it.

What is one of the most important things you can do for yourself in spite of any fear that may hold you back?

To me, that’s an easy one—to have a grounded belief system.

In this episode, I take on the challenge of carving out my beliefs (once again, as the case is)—an exercise I engage in periodically, to stay fresh on how I feel.

Many of us have thought about why we’re here, but not all of us care to venture into the why’s of human existence.

And, that is perfectly fine!

A better question, to me—as someone managing chronic mental illness, is “What is MY WHY for staying alive?”

In this episode, I tackle MY WHY.

And, I learn a thing or two about how important it is to flesh out the reasoning of why I want to be here.

Not only does it just make sense (now that I’ve broached the subject), but I feel it’s supremely helpful to know what makes us tick in this way.

Season 2 is coming November 7!

“This is the story of how ignorance lost its bliss."

What does that mean?

Well, the old saying is ‘ignorance is bliss,’ but is it really?

I’ll get to that in Season 2, but for now…

There is a case to be made for getting treatment for one’s symptoms or complaints. And, not pushing them aside for another day.

For a lot of people, that’s easier said than done. So, we self-medicate, we isolate, we do everything within our power to maintain the status quo.

In Season 2, we will discuss "Self-knowledge."

In this episode, I thought I’d talk about my family and what they look like, how they get along with one another, they’re smell (why not?), and what they mean to me.

Happy International Podcast Day (September 30)!

There’s a lot of talk about recovery in today’s society. What is recovery? What does it mean to recover? What are relapses? And, how is treatment a privilege?

To be fair, I don’t know that recovery is possible by most people’s definitions (or without treatment if we’re getting down to it), so I will just focus on what I personally can do for “growth.”

There is nothing more gratifying than being a part of the kind of relationship where both parties contribute.

However, there are few things more difficult for many individuals with a chronic mental illness than starting and maintaining a connection with someone—and having that be a healthy connection.

Things like a lack of time, resources, insight, vulnerability, and other life issues are often the causes of failed relationships for many—let alone someone battling a chronic mental illness.

So, where does that leave those of us managing our chronic mental illness (with the constraints so many of us seem to face)?

In this episode, I tackle how I’ve made progress in my relationships—all kinds of them—and where the ones that I’ve maintained are at today!

I address what it means to be that person who generally needs the help—and getting the help—without leaning too much on my personal relationships!

I share how I won over the kind of people I’ve always wanted in my life, and what each friend I’ve made (and decidedly kept), means to me.

In this episode, I take on the problem of drinking, and not knowing who is and who isn’t going to emerge an alcoholic.

So much of drinking, from my perspective, is self-medication.

And, we have an alcohol problem in high schools, on college campuses, and in the homes of too many adults, here in the United States.

My country’s drinking problem makes it difficult to tell who is fine, who isn’t fine, and who will be fine.

So, for me, getting help is the key—but, you’ve got to identify who needs the help—not to mention, who wants it; and what are they prepared to do in order to succeed.
