Veronica Sanders is an award-winning interior designer with a love for natural materials, and a masculine edge, her design aesthetic is described as "Industrial Chic." Although she is trained to design with any aesthetic, her favorite is creating interiors with a mix of raw edge, natural materials, and soft, modern decor for a cohesive whole.
Veronica joins me on the show to talk about her persistence in following her path, a pretty epic journey. We also do a little ‘brainstorming’ on how to get trade-related careers such as interior design into the minds of those who would otherwise never be exposed to the concept like her fellow African Americans. And more, listen in!

How to Analyze Your Options
My guest on this episode is Marie Ptak, who is looking for some career advice! She moved out to the Northern California area for historic preservation work, which she says has been mostly in window restoration, as well as some roofing. But as she tells listeners, after being a hairstylist for 4 years, she felt the pull of the builder’s world. Marie went to Tech College for a year-long program, and what she learned laid the valuable foundation she has now. But of course, she eagerly wants to learn more!
What follows in this episode is my advice and guidance for this fledgling craftswoman. For all who are just starting out, for those who are just curious about the profession, or for those looking to change it up mid-career tune in to learn much more.

Born with a Hammer in Her Hand
My guest today grew up on a farm swinging a hammer and became very comfortable with tools. She took to carpentry and has worked for Habitat for Humanity and Oregon Tradeswomen. She has made it her mission to teach young girls how to get in the trades and started a construction summer camp called Girls Build which I personally think is amazing!
Katie is passionate about girls exploring the world of building. From hammering to taking stuff apart, she wants girls to learn to be fearless. With 10 years of teaching building summer camps under her belt, this carpenter hopes every little girl gets to fall in love with swinging a hammer, just like she did.
Katie originally started the camp while working with Oregon Tradeswomen, but when they canceled the program after her departure, she picked up where she left off and re-launched it as her own.

Judaline Cassidy was born in Trinidad. Wanting originally to become a lawyer, a lack of financial resources led her instead to a local trade school. Figuring she would rather get wet than electrocuted, Judaline chose to become a plumber over the electrician trade. She completed her schooling with gusto and moved to New York, working as a nanny and babysitter before catching a break and putting her plumbing skills to use.
She was the first woman to join the Plumbers Local Union 371 in Staten Island, New York. In addition, Judaline was elected on the board of the Plumbers Local Union No. 1 (another first). And currently, she has created a very powerful program for young girls called Tools & Tiaras, which makes craftswomen out of capable and curious girls.

Behind-The-Scenes Inspiration and Motivation
Life gets tough sometimes; we all go through lulls in productivity and motivation. Sometimes procrastination feels like the panacea for all of our troubles. And for me, it’s no different. But I have found that proactively countering the less-inspired moments of my life through various podcasts is oh so effective. There are many other methods I use for garnering motivation and inspiration, but podcasts are the subject today.
In this episode, I explain three of my favorite podcast picks and elaborate on why I make sure to listen to them at least 3-5 times week. Tune in!

On this episode I get to talk in depth with Emma Fowler who is in an amazing program, training to be a high-end residential carpenter. And, she is also a highly skilled ceramics artist on the side.
Emma details her Apprenticeship for us, and it's not just the giant list of carpentry skills, like building walls, that she's learning. She is also being trained as a Superintendent on the job site and also taking construction management classes in the evening at a community college.
This combines a whole host of physical carpentry skills with construction business acumen, leading her from Apprentice to Carpenter and eventually to Superintendent.
She became interested in the trades after years of working in ceramics. She started throwing pots when she was 11 and eventually ran her own ceramics business. While a potter, she held numerous fascinating jobs, like live bee removal and inventory management at hardware stores.
She tried to get on the Electrician's Union Apprenticeship program but was never called, before stumbling onto an electrician's gig chatting with someone at a party after she had basically given up.
Her love for the trades was stoked even more by this job and she looked around until she happened upon her current Apprenticeship...on Craigslist.
Listen to this kick-ass episode! I really loved chatting with Emma and for more info and show notes:

We learn about how she created her successful show "Rescue Renovation," how she became a General Contractor, and geek out on our favorite power and hand tools.
Camille Finan shares how she became a carpenter and kitchen remodeler and why she started the show! Sit back and tighten your seatbelts cause it's gonna get bumpy (emotionally) lol. Hear how she was minutes away from committing suicide and how carpentry saved her life. Now she supports other women in the trades and believes strong "mental" health is critical to being a creative person.
"I've always loved the intimacy of audio and have wanted to connect to a much larger audience for many years. I'm hoping this venue will enable me to connect with you and help share all the many experiences I've had doing construction and building businesses throughout the years. I'm hoping to meet other women in the trades and around the country who share a love of being creative or just going against the grain. It can be lonely to be the only woman on a job site or running a business. Often your friends or family will not truly understand what you are dealing with every day....so I'm hoping to connect, inspire and learn right along with you" ~Camille
We will share stories of other women working in the trades and with their hands. I hope to get a lot more women into this fabulous line of work and prove to you that you can do it. Let's change the industry and make it much easier for women to be successful being creative and thriving outside of traditional work.
