Two mates; sometimes dark, mostly twisty. Bringing you uncensored, raw, occasionally comical, real life chat.
A short and sweet episode from us this week.
In this episode we catch up on the last couple of weeks and check in to see how Lisa has been getting on with the sober experiment!
And the answer is - pretty well, so well in fact that Lisa is taking up a new role as a Fitness Ambassador for Bee Sober starting with two online classes each week!
It's also Shae's birthday this week so we talk about her second sober birthday!
So if you fancy a quick catch up, grab a cuppa and settle in for 20 minutes or so.
Dark and Twisty Sisters
The one with Bee Sober.
This week we were joined by Alex and Lisa from Bee Sober…for the second time.
You’ll only hear one episode but we have recorded two. You’ll have to listen to find out why.
We had so much fun recording this. Hearing about Lisa and Alex the early teenage years, what they got up to while they were apart and what brought them back together.
And of course they tell us all about Bee Sober, The Sober Experiment and how two northern piss head besties now run one of the biggest and best sober communities in the UK.

In this episode we chat to Laura, Lisa’s older sister.
In Lisa’s words and by Laura’s own admission, she’s lived a rather colourful life, and now that she is reaching the milestone of 50, she chats to us about her journey to sobriety, being a mum to 4 children and taking on a law degree over lockdown.
She also talks candidly about her struggles with mental and physical health, including a life saving operation earlier this year.
If you want an inspiring tale of overcoming adversity and life starting at 50, then this is the episode for you!
And we even hear Lisa give her sister a compliment, which is frankly unheard of!
We hope you enjoy the episode and listening to our chatter.
Lisa and Shae
The one with the Brummie Ballet Dancer.
For our first guest episode of season 2 we were joined by the lovely Leanne who Shae met through the sober Instagram community.
When her life as a professional ballet dancer got cut short, Leanne got busy. Really busy. She worked hard and partied harder. On the outside she was buzzing but on the inside things were very different.
And then along came Darcy. Her amazing warrior baby who turned her world upside down in the best possible way.
Leaane shares so much of her story which at times has been heartbreakingly painful. She talks so openly about her addictions, life as a single Mum and all her ups and downs.
There were tears. Lots of tears.
We touch on mental health, suicidal thoughts and drink and drug abuse, so if this may trigger you, please do listen with caution.
We hope you love listening to Leanne's story as much as we did.
Lisa and Shae xx
We are back for our second season!
In our first episode back the two of us chat about what we have been up to in the break, how we have been handling the latest lockdown and how it feels coming out the other side.
We also chat about our attempted 'Fitcast', turning 40 and Shae's brave skydive (you'll be pleased to know she survived) and our upcoming guests for this season.
We hope you join us for our little chat and future episodes with some more brilliant guests.
Lisa and Shae x
A final episode of the first season of the podcast!
Yes that’s right, your (second) favorite dark and twisty duo are taking a break! For the final episode of our debut season, we caught up with each other and had a bit of a debrief.
Considering we hadn’t a clue where we were going with this when we started this back in November, we are pretty chuffed with ourselves and how it turned out. Of course we had a bloody brilliant lineup of guests to help us. Six incredibly strong and badass women joined us over the season.
Each one of them shared some pretty dark stuff, but there was also plenty of twisty laughs in there too! We’ve had a ball doing this podcast and we are so grateful to all of you that have followed us and listened to us. We will be back to spend the summer with you all and have some exciting things in the pipeline so please stick around! In the meantime, thank you to our guests, thank you to our fans and thank you Shonda Rhimes for creating the best two characters without which this podcast would not exist!
Catch you on the flip side. Lisa & Shae xx
In our tenth and penultimate episode of the season we chat with Catherine Mousley.
Trigger Warning
Catherine joined us to talk about her experiences with eating disorders, mental health and mental health in motherhood. She gave us a brutally honest account of her struggles from the tender age of 12 with eating disorders, from anorexia, to bulimia and laxative abuse, including being hospitalised for 9 months during her teens.
We also discussed her mental health struggles, and how this impacted on her during pregnancy and early motherhood, culminating in appearing on a Louis Theroux documentary series, 'Mothers on the Edge'.
This episode was recorded in January with the intention of being published during Eating Disorder Awareness Week in the UK and we feel that this is such an important listen and will really resonate with so many people. The content may be triggering so we do ask that people listen with caution as we discuss eating disorders, mental health and suicide.

This week's episode is a very special one for us, as we chat about how Shae has made it to the momentous milestone of 1 year sober.
I think even Shae herself would say that not many people ever thought this might be possible, particularly the lady herself. But for those of us who know Shae, and the badass, determined woman that she is, we knew that once she wanted to do it for HERSELF, then it would just be a matter of putting it into practice.
Join us as we talk about how Shae made the decision following a rather embarrassing/light bulb moment with her neighbours and a trip to India to go sober, and her first year journey, including a 40th birthday celebration and Christmas festivities to navigate.
Shae also chats about her improved relationship with her family, especially her lovely parents, and there is some light relief in the story around why you should never send a man/dad to shop for donuts!

The one with Laura Amy...who once shared her box of chicken nuggets with One Direction!
This week we had the lovely Laura Amy join us.
Laura came on to share her story of a why the corporate life was never for her. And how after healing from what was a very traumatic childhood she took control of her life, made some badass choices and is now straight talking, sassy and super successful.
After Lisa got over the initial shock of the stabbing incident, and the stand off with armed police the three of us had a right laugh and learned some really cool mindset stuff too! We also managed to talk about celebrity stalking and the power of the universe (a.k.a the Michael Flatley incident) so have a listen...it’s a roller coaster of emotions this one!

In this week’s episode we chat to the lovely Jemma Arscott. We know Jemma from our BBG days – or as we like to now call it the ‘cult of Kayla’!
We chat about Jemma’s journey through fitness, and how in 2017 she made the decision to compete in bodybuilding competitions, which involved 6 months of intense training before competing at two shows. She talks about the pitfalls, the good, the bad and the ugly and the infamous ‘Hunt for Nandos’
We also talk about Jemma’s journey through motherhood and her diagnosis with Rheumatoid Arthritis, and how she navigates through this on a daily basis as a young working mother.
It’s a great listen, and I think Shae and I can safely say we will never be doing show prep anytime soon!

This week we have the lovely Jo Clayton, one of the founders of Bee Sober who Shae is an ambassador for. This episode carries a trigger warning as it includes discussions around sexual assault. Please listen with caution. Jo tells us all about how sobriety has brought her so much happiness after years of unhealthy and fairly shitty relationships. She also shares with us her utterly horrifying story of sexual assault....by someone she knew. Two years ago, Jo finally started putting herself and her health first and now she’s hottest, fittest Nanna in Greater Manchester. This is one brave and strong woman...and we absolutely loved having her on the show. If anyone wants to know more about Bee Sober and what they do you can go to @Beesober.cic on Instagram or message us darkandtwistysisters@outlook.com and Shae will answer your questions.
A bit of lockdown love from your dark & twisty sisters! Thought we’d throw in a little bonus episode this week given the current circumstances. Whatever your thoughts on this lockdown we are in it and we have to try and get through it the best we can. So as myself and Lisa have a very different home life we thought we’d share some of the things we think will be useful for us and hopefully you, our listeners, over the next couple of months. Have a listen, give it a share, or scroll on by... whatever floats your boat! Love Shae and Lisa xx @darkandtwistysisterspodcast (insta) darkandtwistysisters@outlook.com
In this weeks episode we chatted with the lovely Bryony Orsborn of Boucha Kombucha. Bryony tells us about what led her to giving up alcohol for good and how searching for the perfect alcohol free beverage resulted in her creating her own booze free baby, @bouchakombucha. We absolutely loved this episode with Bryony and we hope to have her on again in the future. The new line of Boucha is available to buy now (link in bio of @bouchakombucha) and if you order today it should arrive in time for New Year’s Eve. And not forgetting dry January is around the corner so the perfect time to stock up!
Episode 3 - The one where we convinced one of our mates to come on as our first official guest.
In this episode we talk to our friend, Jess. We have known Jess for as long as we have known each other. She is one of the original BBG Midlands girls from our insta fitness days and we love her to bits!
We asked Jess if she would come on and share her own experiences of mental health and sobriety journey which she kindly did but she also shared a whole lot more. It’s safe to say this is one hell of a woman. She’s been through some seriously hard stuff and has come out the other side stronger and she is one of the kindest, warmest, determined people we know.
These days Jess is smashing life being a Mum, just started a new part time job within the her local NHS mental health team and teaches yoga at Hotpod yoga in West Bridgford (she's a little bit of a super woman).
This is a good one folks, you might wanna get some headphones!
This week in episode 2 the tables are turned and Lisa practices her interrogation skills on Shae.
You’ll get to hear about what it was like for Shae growing up in an Asian family that lived in a predominantly white area. Her experiences with racism and diversity through her school and university years.
She also talks about her mental health struggles over the years and what led to her choosing the sober lifestyle.
It’s an emotional one guys but Lisa threw in some would you rather’s at the end so don’t worry, tissues are not required.
If you have any questions or comments for us please get in touch at darkandtwistysisters@outlook.com or over on our instagram @darkandtwistysisterspodcast
In our first episode after the pilot, we get to know one of our dark and twisty hosts, Lisa.
Answering questions from Shae, Lisa talks about growing up in Yorkshire and moving to Surrey, how she met her husband in a holiday romance and her honest opinions on fitness influencers and coaches.
We also hear about one of Lisa's most embarrassing stories, her thoughts on travelling on a shoestring and life as a mum.
So settle in with a cup of tea (or your drink of choice) and join us in our first episode.
Let us know your thoughts over on our Instagram - @darkandtwistysisterspodcast or on our email: darkandtwistysisters@outlook.com.

The one where Shae thought they were just practising and recording the intro...
Here it is. Our first episode out for the world to hear.
And I’m not kidding. I didn’t expect this to be our first episode but when Lisa said ‘let’s just keep talking’ I was too scared to say no.
So we talked. About how we met. How Lisa scared me back then too. How fitness brought us together but the reality was that she loved it and I only tolerated it when I was in the mood for it, which was hardly ever.
We talked holidays, a bit about our love hate relationship with alcohol and how we are getting cynical with age.
We also touched on tattle life, the website where people go to gossip about social media but is mostly women tearing down other women. Look it up, we’ll probably end up on there once people hear this podcast 🤷🏽♀️.
Our future episodes will have more focus (we hope) and of course we have some fab guests lined up.
But for now go grab a cuppa, put your feet up and listen to us chat shit for half an hour.
