Today, we continue the People of the Bible series and dive into the life of one of the greatest leaders of the Old Testament. Moses is one of the central figures of the Hebrew Bible, remembered as a prophet, leader, and lawgiver. Born during a time when the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt, he survived infancy against the odds and was raised in Pharaoh’s household. After fleeing Egypt as a young man, Moses encountered God in the burning bush and was called to lead the Israelites to freedom.
He confronted Pharaoh, guided the people through the Exodus, and is traditionally credited with receiving the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai—foundational teachings that shaped Judaism and Christianity.
Moses spent the rest of his life guiding the Israelites through the wilderness, serving as a mediator, teacher, and steadfast advocate for his people. His legacy endures as a symbol of faith, courage, and liberation.

It’s easy to dream and hard to take action.
- We dream of the new car but never sell the boat to get it.

Here are 4 helps for a better devotional life...
The fast-paced American culture has often shoved aside family priorities and thrown away any sense of meaningful and healthy conversation. The table has become a decorative household item versus a wholesome desk of fellowship and support. And I get it. Some days are harder than others, and sometimes you simply just don’t have the time or energy. But I think that the benefits of being together at the dinner table far out way some of the inconveniences.
Isn’t it the same way with our Jesus? He invites us to pull up a chair at His table. He wants our fellowship and longs to give us the nourishment that we need for our souls. But we get too busy and side-tracked to notice what He has prepared. We come and quickly consume what is on our plate without ever considering Who put it there. Or we rush into His presence, vent to Him about our problems, and never stay long enough for Him to share His heart. Our conversation is filled with a plethora of “I want” or “Why can’t You” statements. All the while, if we would just be still, we would know that He is God, and He has everything we need.
This is why your time alone with God matters.
What you do in the secret place is essential to your personal growth and your influence as a Christian. It is the foundation that holds up every good thing in your life, and it is the vitality of your mind and heart. When you immerse yourself into the vast ocean of God’s Word and prayer, your soul is refreshed, and your life forever altered.
Trying to turn over a new leaf can’t ultimately change you.
Working hard to fit in with cultural trends can’t sustain you.
Living by legalistic standards by just pushing through and doing more will not lead to lasting change.
Only a genuine and wholesome relationship with Jesus and His Word can satisfy your soul. And even though most of us know our time with God is vital, staying consistent is the hard part. Life happens. Tragedy comes. Plans change. And all that we are left with is the guilt of not having an emotional high from our devotions every day. Our perfectionism kicks into our spiritual life, and we just feel like failures. But let me encourage you by reminding you that this life is a walk with Jesus. Sometimes you know where you’re headed and other times you are just thankful to take another step. Regardless, Jesus longs to spend time with you each day and bring you into His presence.
So, what can you do to deepen your walk with Jesus right now, in this season of life? What habits can you implement each day for a full and nourishing devotional life?

How would you like to grow this year?
This time of year, we are resolute in the challenge to bring on new responsibilities and look for ways to enrich our lives. Personally, I love reminiscing of what God has done in my life over the last year. But I realize that I can’t live in my past failures or successes. I must move forward to a deeper walk with Jesus and allow God to enrich the soil of my heart in the coming season! Peter reminds us to give all diligence and to continually add to our faith.

Not what will you add to your to-do list or schedule this year. But what will you add to your faith? It is through our faith that all other facets of life channel through. Without a strong personal walk with Jesus our family will suffer. Without a resolution in our soul to study God’s Word, we will have a hard time focusing in our area of leadership.

Have you ever thought about the word “thanksgiving?” It means quite literally to give thanks for the blessings you have in life. We don’t need to be convinced that God has been good to us. His mercies are new every morning and His graces are a fresh awakening to a weary soul.
But how often do we tell Him of His goodness? Do our lives express that we are truly grateful for Jesus? Here are five (and a few others) of my favorite verses on giving thanks:
I Thessalonians 5:18 - “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
Philippians 4:6 - “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
Psalm 107:1 - “O give thanks unto the LORD, for [he is] good: for his mercy [endureth] for ever.”
Ephesians 5:20 - “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Psalm 118:24 - “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”

Have you ever really noticed those commercials? What is the imagery they use all the time to get you to buy? It’s usually someone with their hands folded tightly around a warm cup of coffee and a convincing expression of pure bliss as they sit on their newly financed velvet curved loveseat. Or it is someone peacefully lying down on a $4,000 mattress that claims to be the cure-all to sleepers everywhere. Or what about an advertisement for a vacation getaway or grand resort? They say things like,
- “Your calm awaits here!”
- “Where happiness begins.”
- “Where problems are far away.”
Do you know what they are trying to say? “If you come here or buy this, your problems will all go away and you can finally be at rest.”
You were made for rest and pleasure. God has ingrained in every fiber of our being the desire to Sabbath—rest. I’m talking about the mentality of Sabbath that refreshes our souls and breathes in the constant flow of Christ’s enriching peace every day. That is what the world is so desperately trying to imitate. And it’s through this God-given desire that we often set our eyes to the skies, hoping the next pleasure will give us a stillness in our soul.

I remember as a kid doing some, shall I say, funny things. I mean come on, I was the only boy among five sisters; a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do to keep himself entertained. I remember one gloriously idiotic day in particular. I call it The Commencement of My Inner Evil Knievel. I was going to fly! The only problem was that it was impossible!
Perfection is impossible. Many people are simple restless by the standards they put on themselves. They strive to have everything just right but end up feeling like a failure no matter the outcome. This is not the way Jesus has called us to live!

Hyper Multitasking
We get ourselves into a lot of trouble when we try to do everything all at once. We think we have to experience everything. Go here, do that, see this. We paralyze ourselves by trying to have a widespread menu, while our quality of life is pretty sub-par.

Chinatown is a densely populated neighborhood that attracts many tourists with its Southeast Asian restaurants and shops. I remember my visit to Chinatown as a senior in high school; and I can assure you, it was an interesting experience.
I had heard word from others who had visited Chinatown that the venders were, shall I say, a bit on the “aggressive side.” So, I thought I’d have a little fun and maybe come out with a bargain. I walked into a shop with a group of friends, and I heard a man say, “Psssst, come here..."

Entitlement sees others through greedy lenses. We have all been guilty. We see the Jones family across the street with a new car that we know they can't afford and something wells up inside of us. We start making slighted remarks about how they don’t deserve a new car because of the way they take care of their house or that we should be the one with a new car since we actually work hard for our money. I truly believe that a strong envy for the world is one of God’s greatest enemies.

“Entitlement is the belief that we inherently deserve privileges or special treatments, or that we have the right to something.” You may say:
“I work hard. Don’t I deserve a high paying job?”
“I deserve to buy a nice car for myself. I’ve been good with my finances for a long time.”
“I deserve a nice house because my parents have a nice house.”
“I work so hard to provide for my family. I deserve to do what I want when I come home.”
“I’ve worked hard today; I deserve a treat.”
The reality is that we don’t truly deserve anything. All that we have is gift from God...

My heart truly hurts for many American families that live every day in dire need of biblical leadership. For several years, I’ve served in youth ministry, conferences, Christian camps and schools and I can say without hesitation that many struggles of today’s generation are a pure result of a lack of biblical authority.
Take a look at these stats:
- According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 19.5 million children, more than 1 in 4, live without a father in the home.
- 63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes (US Dept. Of Health/Census) – 5 times the average.
- 90% of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes – 32 times the average.
- 71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes – 9 times the average. (National Principals Association Report)
According to Barna Group:
- 80% of pastors are depressed
- 94% feel pressure to have a perfect family
- 81% has no time for spouse
- 80% says ministry has negative impact on their family
- 81% say they don’t have a close friend
- Most pastors juggle 16 tasks weekly
That data proves it. Leadership has severe consequences, good or bad. In a world that is begging for guidance, we must claim the Biblical approach to leading our homes, churches, and businesses.

There are four groups of people that the apostle Paul addressed in II Timothy 2:12. We have looked at two of them; listeners and learners. That is the beginning of picking up God’s truth and passing it on to others. Listeners hear the truth with their ears and learners hide the truth in their hearts.
Now we have come to the third group of people in this passage—"faithful men.” There is something to be said about the Christian who is simply faithful in all that they do! These are laborers, who take the truth they have been given and heed to it!
But I think we must ask ourselves why? Why do we serve the Lord? Here are a few reasons why I serve the Lord:
- Because He loves me and gave Himself for me
- Because He rewards faithfulness
- Because time is short
- Because Jesus is coming soon
- Because of the Judgement Seat of Christ!

Last week, we stepped up to the challenge that the apostle Paul gave to a young Timothy.
“And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” 2 Timothy 2:2.
He was telling Timothy to pick it (God’s truth) up and pass it on. How you do that? Through being a good listener. But we all know there is a difference between being a listener and being a LEARNER. You can listen to someone tell you how to replace the alternator in your car or how to get to the nearest gas station, but until you purpose to learn the information, you are just hearing a bunch of noise. So how do we cross the bridge from a listener to a leaner? Well, we have to hide it, not just in our head, but in our heart.
Here is an acrostic that has helped me tremendously to hide God’s wonderful truth in my heart. It’s not my mine originally but the source is unknown.
HEAR
There are so many ways to consume information in our tech savvy society. Podcasts, YouTube videos, livestream, etc. But one great addition to all this tech is the tools we can utilize to consume God’s Word. In Old Testament times, what Jews learned about the law of God was verbal. It was repeated from one generation to the next and it was not foreign to read the scriptures aloud...
EXAMINE – read it daily
It’s amazing how little of an emphasis there is on reading now a days! Reading is good for the soul. It stimulates the imagination and open doors to vibrant worlds unknown. If that is true, then why do we give so little attention to the written Words of God? If anyone has something to say, it is Him! Well, how should I read God’s Word...
ANALYZE – study it often
I know what you’re thinking, “Studying is for students, right?” Right! But when do we ever stop being a student? True ignorance insists upon those who choose to be their own teachers! We should always have an appetite for the Bible. It is by digging into the well of God’s truth that we will draw the sweetest waters...
REPEAT – share it with others!
We all know that some things that are not worth repeating! But there is one thing you can repeat to others all the time-God’s Word. You will never go wrong by pointing others to the holy pages of scripture. I have learned that some of the most influential truths of God’s Word have been ones that I have shared with others over and over again...
THINK– meditate, memorize and master it!
The thoughts that are in your head, will eventually wiggle its way down to the belief system of your heart. That’s why Paul challenges us in Philippians 2: 5, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus…” How amazing is that! You can have the same thoughts as the Lord Jesus! If we learn to think like Christ there is a good chance we might act like Him. How do we think like Christ? We think on His Word. Notice:

As a young preacher, I can get myself into a lot of trouble. Mainly because I have everything to say with a small amount of life and experience to back it up! This is why I must rely on men like Bro Tim Hicks (Youth Pastor and Father-in-law), Pastor Rick Finley and others, to pour the truth of God’s Word into my life.
This is the challenge that Paul gave to Timothy in I Timothy 2:1-2. “Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”
Paul was in essence saying, “Pick it up and pass it on!” He was instructing a young man to LISTEN! You’ve heard the saying that you have two ears and one mouth because God wants you to listen twice as much as you speak! I think there is a lot of truth to that. The first step in passing God’s Word and Truth onto others is to listen to it being taught and preached. So often, our tendency is to talk and talk and talk, when the key of understanding waits at the door of listening ears.
This is something I always appreciated about my late pastor, Bro Bobby Roberson. He was a great listener! He would sit there after service as long as you wanted to talk and never gave the impression that he was in a hurry to get somewhere.
Are you a good listener? Do you give others a bended ear when they come to you for help? Here are few characteristics that I try to work on to be a good listener (And trust me, I have to constantly work on!):
A good listener makes eye contact.
My wife knows if I am listening simply by where I’m looking. So, if I want to communicate love to her, I’ll put my phone down and look her in the eye, giving her my best attention.
A good listener knows if or when to speak.
Sometimes the person that comes to you for help is simply needing a listening ear. They don’t want you to fix all their problems or give them twelve steps of instructions, they just want to know that someone cares and will hear them out.
A good listener will offer solutions if necessary.
Yes, there are times when people just want to feel valued and heard, but there are sometimes they want you to give input. A good listener will listen intently to the problem as to evaluate a solution. If you just say “uh-h” every few seconds but your mind is on last night’s game, it’s probably a good sign you won’t be able to be a help. And then when the adrenaline kicks in because your friend asks, “So, what you think about that?”--you’ll make a note to listen next time.
Ultimately, how we listen to others is how we listen to God. ‘Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:” (James 1:19).

What is the greatest verse in all the Bible? Of course, that is a matter of opinion, but I personally believe it is John 3:16. This is the center of our faith—the center of our hope in the Lord Jesus Christ! Packed in this one verse is a powerful proclamation of the Gospel, giving light to a world in darkness. It is quoted often and preached much but you can never reach the end of it’s inexhaustible truths!
We conclude our study of JESUS: The Only Way with a close look into this verse. Notice:
The Origin of Salvation – “For God…”
The Offering of the Savior – “gave his only begotten Son”
The Opportunity for the Sinner – “whosoever believeth”
The Order of Sin – “perish”
The Ornament of the Saint – “everlasting life”

We live in a world that loves the darkness. “Men love darkness rather than light.” Jesus told Nicodemus. It’s a place secrecy and unknown where light cannot unveil the horrors of a sinful heart.
Darkness in scripture is a picture of evil. It represents those things that are contrary to the light of God’s holy Word.
But in stead of focusing on the darkness in our world (which we so often do), we ought to focus on the power of the Light! So, in contrast to the darkness, lets look a few things that God uses as lights to reveal Himself to man.
The Light of Christ
This is the Light that outshines all the others! He is our bright and Morning star (Rev, 22:16).
“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12).
There is no darkness that can over shadow His love and there is no evil that can overcome His light. No matter how hard men my try to put out the light that is in Christ, they cannot attain the means necessary...
The Light of Creation
Creation speaks to all people by revealing the power, order, beauty and precision of God’s handiwork. It is His outdoor book. Just a look at the beautiful waterfalls of Fiji, or the great mist of the Smoky mountains, sheds light on the truth that there must be a Creator...
The Light of Conscience
In every man there is a ray of light. This light, although blackened by sin from Adam, is the express image (likeness) of God implied upon man at the time of creation....
The Light of His Commandments
One of the greatest lights of all that God has given to man, is His Word (Prov.6:23). It’s not just a list of “dos and don’ts” but it is the character and heart of God in written form...

Every time I think about snakes I remember one instance in particular. It was the first day of an absolutely full Junior week of camp. All the booger-eating munchkins were filing out of the buses ready to wreak havoc on anything or anyone. The staff’s spirit was up, and we were pumped about adventures ahead. The first bell rang and everyone poured into the fellowship to enjoy a hot lunch. Everything was running smoothly, just as it should

There are not many studies that are more foundational then the a study of the Holy Spirit. He is our life. We are His temple. He is our breathe, we are His workman. You don’t hear a lot of preaching and teaching on Him, but I can assure He is very present and He lives to breathe everlasting life into the minds and hearts of all who seek Him.
In our look at John 3, Nicodemus just wasn’t getting it—“…ye must be born again.” He continued to think in tangible and physical terms trying to make sense of it all. In verse six, Jesus begins to explain what part of Nicodemus must be born again—his spirit.
Then Jesus turns to the second illustration—the wind.
No matter how advanced our studies in anatomy and biology become, birth is still a mysterious miracle! It the same with the regenerate work of the Holy Spirit within a man. You can see it evidences but the work is incomprehensible!
Imagine sitting there with Jesus and Nicodemus. I wonder if the winds hollowed around them as the sun dipped low under the trees. I wonder if the wind painted Christ’s illustration perfectly by rustling the flame that was lit in the night hour. I imagine Nicodemus, the religious ecclesiastical thought of the Old Testemant passage in Ezekiel 37, when a valley of dry bones were revived by the Holy Ghost. Perhaps…

I have thoroughly enjoyed our study of one of the greatest chapters in the entire Bible--John 3! It has been refreshing and simply helpful for my heart. We come now to the crux of it all--the main message Jesus brings to Nicodemus: The Man with Many Questions. His words are concise--“Ye must be born again…” (v.7)
But why did Jesus use the picture of birth to help Nicodemus understand how to be saved? Here are a few thoughts of why I believe the illustration of a new birth resonates with the hearts of people who have questions about salvation. It may answers some questions you have about salvation, or prove to be an effective witnessing tool when sharing the Gospel with an unbeliever.
Birth is the beginning of a life
From the very moment of conception a new life begins. It develops for some time in the womb and then the labor pains begin. After a while a baby is born, the umbilical cord is cut, and a new journey on earth has begun. It’s an exciting thing isn’t it?...
Birth is a familiar picture to all
Everyone can relate to birth. We have all experienced it and we can all understand this monumental aspect of humanity...
There are two parents
Just like in life, there are two parents to every child that is born again through faith in Jesus Christ. First, the Spirit of God.
“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” (John 3:5).
The Holy Spirit convicts someone of their sin and shows them their need of a Savior. (Jon16:7-11). It is through the Spirit that a man is drawn to the truth of God and brought to repentance.
Which brings us to the second parent of the new birth--The Word of God...
And once a part of the family of God, you take on a new nature of your parents. 2 Peter 1:4 sates, “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”
As one preacher said, “You receive a new start with a new heart!”
Birth causes travail
There is no question at all that the pains of child-birth are excruciating. I’ve watched my wife give birth to our precious daughter and I can certainly say my wife has a determination like no other! The pain and mental stress of it all were difficult at the time, but the joy that came out of that was worth it all!
It is much the same in regards to being born again. Much travail and agony was suffered so that the joy of a new life could be made possible...
Jesus endured the cross for YOU! It is through his great suffering that redemption was made available to all that believe.

Imagine the privilege of being able to ask Jesus questions. How amazing would that be? Last week, we were introduced in our study of John 3—JESUS: The Only Way—to a man loaded with questions and desperate for answers. Nicodemus was equipped with the law, but faith was far from him. Unfortunately, I believe there are many people in our world that look at Jesus with the same wonder.
Is he really the God man?
Why did He come?
Did He even exist?
What does it mean to be saved?
Can He save me?
We will dive deeper into Jesus’ words soon, but for now let’s take a quick look into the questions that Nicodemus brought before Jesus. Maybe you or someone you know might have a few things in common with the man that met Jesus by night.
He questioned who Jesus was.
John 3:2 says, “The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.”
Nicodemus uses the plural pronoun “we” indicating that he might be representing other Pharisees with the same questions. Whether his trip was business or personal the consensus still remains that he was not quite sure who Jesus was.
I believe all faiths have their roots embedded in the response to this question: “Who is Jesus?“ It’s amazing the diverse responses you will get to such a simple question. Jesus even questioned His own disciples about this very thing in Mark 8.
“And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am?" And they answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets. And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ,” (Mark 8:27-29).
It’s one thing to believe that Jesus existed in history, and another to believe that Christ is the Son of God, Saviour of the world! He came to call “sinners to repentance” (Matt. 9:13; Mark 2:17; Luke 5:32) and give light to a dark world, black from sin.
Who is Jesus to you?
He confused spiritual things with physical things.
Imagine the look on Nicodemus’s face. I must what? Be born again? We know that Nicodemus was confused because he immediately thought of a physical birth instead of a spiritual birth. Jesus explains further, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit,” (John 3:6).
I believe many people are right where Nicodemus is here. They try to make faith tangible. Something they can do or see that will pay their sin debt and set their souls free. Being saved has everything to do with your spirit and soul being renewed by faith in Jesus Christ.
Salvation is an internal work, not an external effort.
No sacraments
No traditions
No church membership
No accolades or accomplishments
No good thing can give eternal life outside of faith in the Gospel. Jesus is the only way!
Ephesians 2:8-10 says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
He questioned the reality of salvation.
Nicodemus’s primary question was “How?” He asked in verse 9, “How can these things be?”
We might ask today, “Can God really save my soul? Can I really be made anew?”
There are many people that believe God is beyond saving them...

We open to John chapter three with a man who is desperate to meet a very busy teacher. But I love how Jesus is open and willing to leave the ninety and nine, so save just one. Think of all Jesus was up to in Jerusalem--miracles, messages, town’s people constantly trying to get His attention. But in the midst of it all His focus turned to one that was longing for answers. A Pharisee of all people, named Nicodemus.
Nicodemus was a “man of the Pharisees…a ruler of the Jews.” (V.1). The law was his life. Tradition was his meaning. The Pharisees were the strictest sect of Judaism and known for their piety and commitment to oral laws. They were rigidly legalistic in their interpretation of the Torah, which was a recipe for mechanical and heartless religion.
But before we point the finger at someone like Nicodemus, I think it is important to note the first three words of the chapter three, “There was a man…” Through all of the attire of a “master of Israel--through all the knowledge of the law--he was still just a man. He was a man like you and I that didn’t have the answers and desperately needed Jesus.
If we are honest with ourselves we all have a little bit of “Pharisee” in us, don’t we? We all have the attitude of self-exaltation and pride waiting to pear its ugly head from time to time. Here are a few ways I think us--even as God’s children--can favor the attitudes of the Pharisees:
We value Rules more than Relationship
One of the most dangerous things about the Pharisees was that they externalized religion. They tried to make a work of the heart into a work of the hands. This is why many of them put so much emphasis on the rules of the law and rejected a relationship with Jesus...
We are a friend to friends, not a friend to sinners
You’ve heard the phrase, “It’s us four and no more!” That is the attitude of many of God’s children. That’s why we are called God’s children, because we often act like it! We like our clicks and little groups and express no interest in allowing outsiders to be a part. We like the Pharisees often times turn our heads at those who are not just like us. And every time we do, we are putting to death every chance of Christ to live in and though us...
We magnify other faults and minimize our own
We certainly love the spotlight don’t we? The glamour of being the center of attention is all too exhilarating for our pride. But when it comes to our faults and failures, we’d rather someone else steal the show! The thought of the world seeing our “dirty laundry” motivates a stealthy act to hide in shadows and put someone else in the spotlight...
We trust the knowledge of men over God’s wisdom
We live in a society with a superfluity of information! Influencers, Youtubers, pop artist, and athletes--all with an opinion of the world and a Twitter feed to tell you about it! If we are not careful we can begin to trust more in the knowledge of men versus the wisdom of God...
We focus more on what man sees versus what God knows
We all want acceptance, approval and affirmation, but where we choose to get it from will determine if we are left satisfied or not...
We are much like our friend Nicodemus. We have our legalities and questions. But one thing is certain--we all need Jesus!

It amazes me that I have the privilege to stand in the presence of God and commune with him each day. The words of David often come to mind,
“What is man, that thou art mindful of him? " Psalm 8:4.
I do not come into His presence because I am worthy but because Jesus Christ is worthy! He has made Himself an advocate for me and “ever liveth to make intercession.”
I can come and dwell under in the prayer closet, finding rest, peace, and strength for my journey. But isn’t it amazing how we find so many excuses for not coming into the prayer closet? We say silly things like,
I have so much to do! I just don’t have time to pray!
I don't know what to pray for?
I don’t believe God is hearing me!
Who is it helping anyway?
I wonder how many other people missed out on a blessing because we failed to pray for them? I wonder what we have missed because we believed the lie our prayers have not worked.
A.J. Gordon said this, “You can do more than pray after you have prayed; but you can never do more than pray until you have prayed.”
God wishes to show us great and mighty things if only we will call unto Him.
How does God move us to pray?
He Desires Us to Pray
The simple fact that the omnipotent, all-powerful, and all-knowing God desires to be personally involved in our lives should move us to our knees! “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.” I John 3:1.
It humbles me to know that the God whom I often disappoint still desires to have my time and attention. He longs for our deepest desires--our greatest secrets.
He Demands Us to Pray
Prayer is not just a good practice but a required one for Believers. When God came to Jeremiah in a jail cell, He spoke in the imperative, “Call unto me…” It wasn’t a question but a command. Jesus said to His disciples,
“Watch and pray that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Jesus was teaching his disciples the importance of communing with God on a regular basis, as it was vital to their spiritual growth. Now I know what you’re thinking,
Why would a loving God make a requirement to pray? Doesn’t that seem a little much?
But remember, just because it is a command does not mean that He takes away your free will. He still gives you a choice. When God makes a command it is a test of obedience and loyalty. Faithfulness to the prayer closet is a reflection of your devotion to God.
How is your obedience in the area of prayer?
He Drives Us to Pray
Hard times mold us. They move us closer to the image of our Lord! Although painful and uncertain, trials break up the fallow ground of the heart and bring forth eternal fruit that redounds to the glory of God!
It’s in these precious moments of suffering that we are driven to the One whose touch can heal our broken heart and relieve the wounds that world deems incurable. Oh thank the Lord that we can pray in the midst of the fire! His presence brings cool in the desert heat and warmth in the snowy winter! What a mighty God that moves us to pray--Who desires, demand and drives us to the prayer closet!

We all need some extra "promptings" now and then don't we? We forget about an important meeting; we buy things we already have but can't find; or we forget about our anniversary. Yea, not good!
That's why in a world of distraction we need some reminders from time to time. Some things that will help us move toward the actions and mind of Christ.
About a year ago I had a preacher friend of mind teach me the value of prayer prompters—looking for visual reminders to help prompt me to pray. He challenged me whenever I see 333 remember Jeremiah 33:3 where God invites Jeremiah to call unto Him.
Look on gas station sign, license plates, credit card numbers etc. Wherever you are, stop what you are doing pray.
Since that time I have started to look for other things that prompt me to pray:
- Prayer lists are probably the most common prayer prompters, but get creative! Put sticky notes on you mirror or write on the shower walls with a dry-erase marker.
- Wedding invitations—pray for the couple getting married. Pray Gods protection over their purity and that the Lord would have His way in the home.
- Christmas cards—pray for the family every time you go the fridge. (And if you like to eat like me then your prayer life will certainly grow.
- When you see a certain type of car on the road that someone you know drives, pray for that friend.
- When you buy a gift for a friend, pray as you wrap it or place it in the gift bag.
- When you see an ambulance or fire truck heading to the scene of an accident, pray for the ones involved.
Of course, I don’t do all of these all the time but they certainly are great reminders to keep the conversation going with Jesus throughout my day. I think so often our prayer life consists within the boundaries of self-betterment and gain. Our prayers can be so shallow can’t they?
“Lord give us a good day today.”
“Lord bless us today and watch over us.”
“Lord, meet our needs today.”
These are all great things but specificity gives God the opportunity to be specific in His answer. And instead of always praying for personal things, I’ve learned that sometimes the greatest moves of God in my life are when I am interceding for someone else. I stop what I am doing to reach heaven about something specific in someone else’s life.
Intercessory prayer is a lost privilege to the Christian whose world revolves his own needs.

The dinner table is a very special place in the Robertson household. It’s a place of warm food, meaningful conversations, and a time of prayer. It is part of my day that I can unwind with those I love, and I truly look forward to it. But I often think about what the dinner table looks like through the eyes of the average American home.
- A study by New York University Langone Health found that, in the past 20 years, the frequency of family dinners has declined by 33%.
- In addition, a recent poll by YouGov found that 62% of parents with children under 18 wish they had family dinners “much more often” or “somewhat more often.
The fast-paced American culture has often shoved aside family priorities and thrown away any sense of meaningful and healthy conversation. The table has become a decorative household item versus a wholesome desk of fellowship and support. I think that the benefits of being together at the dinner table far outweigh some of the “inconveniences.”
According to The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, children who share family dinners three or more times per week:
- Are less likely to be overweight
- Are more likely to eat healthy food
- Perform better academically
- Are less likely to engage in risky behaviors (drugs, alcohol, sexual activity)
- Have better relationships with their parents
There are tremendous benefits in prioritizing the family table. Have you noticed that Jesus had special moments with His disciples at the table? It was in the last hours of His life that He chose the table in the upper room to commune with His followers and share His heart with them. It was there that He broke the bread and commanded, “this do in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19).
Jesus invites you to pull up a chair at His table. He wants your fellowship and longs to give you the nourishment that you need for your journey. We have been talking in the Back To Basics series about our alone time with God. We looked at how to make the most of our devotions and how to dwell in the secret place and how to keep the door of fellowship open to Christ.
Imagine that! Jesus Christ at your table! What a thought the King of Kings wishes to be my honored guest. It has the idea that Jesus sits down at our table and lets us be the host. We spread the table and pour out our hearts to Him--praise, thanksgiving, honor, and petitions.
But then, it gets even better. He says, “…and he with me.” This holds the idea that the roles are switched. I am no longer the host, but the guest. He is the host. He is the one that spreads the table. He spills out His heart to us.
God gifts us with His heart in written form. His Word bears the truth of His character and leads us to a place of repentance.
But I think we often have the same response to the Lord’s table as we do the family table. We get too busy and side-tracked to notice what He has prepared. We come and quickly consume what is on our plate without ever considering Who put it there. Or we rush into His presence, vent to Him about our problems and never stay long enough for Him to share His heart.
Can I encourage you to come to table with Christ? Pour out your heart to Him, and let Him pour out His heart to you. Don’t be in a hurry to leave. Stay awhile. You might just learn something.

Believe it or not, poor posture does affect your health. It can lead to neck and back problems if not corrected. Whether you sit at a desk all day, or browse your smartphone on the couch, it is often hard to remember to straighten up during the day. My wife will often give me a stern elbow while sitting in church, and that’s just a little “loving” reminder to sit up nice and tall, and put those shoulders back. Like a good husband--I usually listen.
Although I am truly convinced of the importance of healthy living and taking care of our “temple,” I am often reminded that God’s work is very much inward. It’s the shaping of my heart into the image of Christ that brings on great transformation and spiritual health. Romans 8:29.
We often tend to put a lot of emphasis on physical posture and health, but what about your heart? How is your heart’s posture toward the things of God? Is it upright and open to Him and His Word? Or is it slouching into apathy and coldness towards His will and purpose for your life?
There is no better “loving reminder” to straighten up our heart’s health then the Word of God. It is our nudge to keep our hearts open and right with Jesus throughout the day. Here are three ways to help with your heart’s posture as you go about today:
1. Keep short accounts with God.
Sin will make you slouch. There is is doubt about it. Sin destroys your spiritual health and contaminates any good thing God tries to place into your life. One of the greatest lessons that I learned at a young age, was to keep short accounts with God--keep my sins confessed. I John 1:9.
How soon should you confess your sins to God? ASAP. Don’t let much time pass before your get that specific sin confessed to God. The longer you wait the more your heart will get used to the comfort of slouching--but the implications are detrimental.
- Confront your sin - get honest about it
- Confess your sin - literally means to say the same thing as God. (Call it what it is--God already knows
- · Continue - Don’t let guilt of the past paralyze you from God’s blessings for the future
2. Consult Christ in every decision--BIG or small
This may seem elementary but it’s so vitally important. We often clock-in at our jobs and work our busy schedules without much thought of Christ. Sure we may start our day in His Word, but then we put on our “work hat” and keep our spiritual lives out of our secular lives. Jesus wishes for us to Keep the Door Open to Him all day long.Proverbs 3:5-6.
Many times, we do not acknowledge Him in our decisions because we do not trust that He will make the right one. Let him direct your paths, big or small. Even if it’s on what you are deciding to wear that day. Let Him lead your heart.
3. Be quick to thank Him for the little things
Nothing accelerates your heart’s health like giving praise and thanks to God! It is an attitude that energizes your mind and gives you the support that you truly need throughout the day. Psalm 100.
As soon as the blessing lands in your lap, straighten your heart’s posture to God. Give Him the praise that He deserves. James 1:17.
How is your heart’s posture to God? Do you keep short accounts with Him? Are you quick to consult Him? Do you stop and praise him for the little things
Like my wife does to me on occasion can I give you a little nudge and challenge you to keep your posture in check? As you browse the aisle for Valentine’s Day and see the big signs and boxes shaped like hearts, let it serve as a reminder to you to keep your heart’s posture in check toward the things of God. Proverbs 4:23.

Do you keep the door open at your house? This time of year I believe it’s safe to say you don’t. Cold wind and icy weather doesn’t sound very comfy-cozy in your living room. But did you know God wishes for us to keep the door open all of the time?
I’m not talking about the physical door at the front of your house. I’m talking about the door of fellowship that leads into your life. Revelation 3:20 says,
“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me."
Over the last few weeks in the Back to Basics series, we have looked at the imporatance of spending time in God’s Word and in prayer. Our time alone with God is foundational to growing in the admonition of the Lord, and changing the culture around us.
But our goal as believers is not to formulate the perfect devotional time, but to develop a devotional life--keep the door open all day long. Jesus is pleading with you. He wants to come into your life--your home, school, job--He wants to fellowship with you all day long. He doesn’t want to be forgotten when you go to work. He does not want to leave when you go out with your friends.
He is knocking. Will you let him in? Will you let Him stay?
Here are a few things that have helped me to keep the door of fellowship open to Christ throughout the day.
1. Practicing His Presence
There is something so sweet about realizing that Jesus is with you at this moment. He is ready and willing to talk to you and share the blessings of his heart.
Psalm 16:11 says, “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand are pleasures evermore."
When you are at work or busily going about at home, imagine that Jesus is there with you. Picture him sitting on the couch across from you as you pray. Picture him leaning over your shoulder whispering into your ear every word from the pages of Scripture you are reading. Wherever you are acknowledge Him and keep the conversation going.
2. Quote Scripture throughout the day.
Nothing fills our home with the presence of God more than Scripture being quoted aloud. It adds such a sweet spirit that brings about an atmosphere of worship and praise to God. It sets up a stronghold of defense that seems to encompass our family and keep the “adversary the devil” at bay.
Remember, when you recite God’s word you are starting a conversation. It is not just ritualistic memorization, but a conversation with God that illuminates truth into your life.
Psalms 119:105-106 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
3. Turn off distractions - namely your phone or TV.
To be honest, I don’t know why they put ON/OFF buttons on phones anymore. Anyone still use them? I didn’t think so (myself included). We live so glued to all the fancies of a distracted world and then we wonder why we are so restless. In my book Restless: Finding Rest in a Restless World, which will be releasing this year, I talk about how we can get so enamored with the “extras” that we miss what really matters.
Turn off your TV, podcasts, put your phone on silent if you just cant bring yourself to do it--whatever it takes cut out the distractions and invite Christ into your fellowship. Shut out the noise around you and keep the door open to Him.

You wouldn’t say:
“Father, Dad, Daddy, Tim etc…”
So, where do we truly begin?
Last week we talked about the idea of praying the very Words of God. Not just using Scripture as you model, but as you message to God.
Here are 5 points for praying God’s Word.
- Pick A Passage
Obviously you’ve got to start somewhere. Ask the Holy Spirit what passage would best fit your current situation. Psalms and Proverbs is a great place to start since they are already prayerful in nature.
- Personalize Your Prayer
When you look at a verse, ask yourself, “If this passage were my prayer to God, what would it say?”
Take Psalm 119:9-11: “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”
Your prayer could look something like this:
Oh God! I pray that you would cleanse my way. Help me to take heed to your Word in everything that I do. Help me to seek after You with my whole heart and let me not stray from Your commandments. Hide Your Word deeply within my heart, so that I will not sin against You!
What about if you’re reading a narrative?
Take the principals that God illuminates to you within the story and make them yours! Remember it is a conversation with God, so talk to Him about what He is pin-pointing in your life. Profound, isn’t it?
- Pray the Passage for Someone Else
Sometimes God doesn’t just give you something to get it, but to give it! We are so stingy sometimes aren’t we? When we find something good we immediately hide it away. The wonderful thing about our daily bread is that it can feed you and everyone else without being exhausted! You‘ll never reach the depth of His bountiful Truth.
Here are some ways you can pray for others according to God’s heart
- Salvation for another – Acts 2:21
- Healing – Psalm 103:3,5

Repentance for another – Luke 15 – “…he came to himself…”

Put it on paper
One of the greatest things I learned to do as a teenager was to journal. I still write my heart out to God almost every day, and I can assure you it does my soul good. There is something that constitutes the validity of His hand working when you write it down. It becomes real, alive to you!
I personally make it a point to not write many study notes during this time. I have other ways I study for a message or a Sunday School lesson. I try to stick to one thing, and that is my response to the Truth God has given me. Many times it is a cry for help to obey that truth. Other times I find that I can pray nothing but adoration.
Why write it down? Can’t I just pray and get on with it?
Yes, but I know from own experience that my prayer journal is one of the greatest sources of encouragement. I have re-read some of my prayers from years ago that I had completely forgotten about, and it is amazing to say, “Wow! God has honored that prayer, and I forgot all about it!”
- Practice Holy Spirit Patience
Take your time! Don’t rush the conversation. There is no need to look at the clock. God already knows what time it is, and I promise He’s not in a hurry! As you pray the passage in front of you, slow down and truly meditate on what God is saying to you. If He says to stop on the first verse, stop. If He says to keep going, keep going.

4 Helps for your Time with God
If you truly wish to influence the culture for Jesus, you must dive deeply into His heart and “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” II Timothy 2:15.
But the questions comes,
How to I dive into the Word? Where do I start in my devotions? Am I making the best of my time alone with God?
Here are four helps for your time alone with God:
- Find A Place
Often times in scripture you find Jesus taking leave to a “mountain apart” or in a solitary place to spend time alone with His Father (Mark 1:35). It was a special time, away from the “hustle and bustle’ of life to consecrate Himself in prayer.
Psalm 91 says, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide in the shadow of the Almighty.”
The secret place is not secret because God wishes to keep it from you, its secret because very few men find it. Do you have a place; place away from your phone, TV, and other distractions?
If you don’t have one, find one. Ask God to help it become a place of Sabbath and rest away from the busyness of everyday life, and consecrate it to God.
- Have A Plan.
Isn’t it amazing how much of our lives that we plan, especially this time of year, and never seem to find time for Him? Or if we do have time for Him, we don’t deem it necessary to “put Him on the calendar.” It’s just one of those things that we check off a list, but we never give it priority.
Can I encourage you to have a plan. Ask the Lord what direction he wants you to go in your devotional time. This year I’m reading thought the Bible in chronological order, trying to finish in 12 months. I normally am not a fan of Bible reading lists, but I believe this year God is directing me to do so for a purpose I am excited to find out. Whatever it is, have plan and make it a priority as if it was a special event (because it is).
- Make It Profitable
The Word of God is the ultimate transformer in a believers life. “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12.
Talking to God, and letting him talk to you is the most profitable thing you can do today. It’s not adjust your 401k, it’s not demanding a raise, it is getting into the Living Word, that will in turn live in and through you. So, you must not waste time when you are alone with God. Put your phone away, turn the TV off and be still and know that He is God. (Psalm 46:10).
- Be Persistent
If you are going to do anything in life well, you must do it often. The same applies to our time with God. But to be honest, this is probably the thing most people struggle with when it comes to their devotions. They may know where to go in the Bible, but they get so frustrated because they cant do it everyday. Listen, we live in an imperfect world with changes happening every day. No two days are the same. So, don’t let the devil beat you up for not being perfect in you time with God.
No, everything will not go according to plan. Life will happen. The question is will you take Jesus with you when it does. See, the objective is not to have alaborate devotions everyday, but to develop a devotional life to Jesus!

1. What is a Navigator?
· Oxford Languages: A person who directs the route or course of a ship, aircraft, or other form of transportation, especially by using instruments and maps.
· A navigator is someone who blazes the trail of truth for the next generation. They fight against the winds of false doctrine that try to bend and break our culture.
2. We are coasting not blazing
· Martin Luther, who despite the fact he knew he could be killed, stood before authorities 500 years ago and reportedly said: “Here I stand [on God’s Word]; I can do no other; God help me”?
3. We Must speak up and speak out! We cannot avoid the hard topics forever!

· We must not let the culture predict the future of the church, but let the church predict the future of the culture. The next generation is depending on it.
