Get 75% off Money Beyond The Chair
We’re diving into the complexities of navigating finances, particularly through the holiday season, for those in the beauty industry. Listen as our guest shares her transition from a financially strained hairstylist to a personal finance coach, helping others take control of their finances and live out their dreams.
Discover why you need to adjust your relationship with money, how to get started with a spending plan, and how to handle obligatory holiday spending.
This is a must-listen for hairstylists and beauty professionals who want to balance creative passion with financial stability.
We’re talking about:
The holiday season can be a financially stressful time, especially for freelancers like hairstylists. However, with strategic planning and informed advice, it is possible to navigate this season without unnecessary financial stress. In this episode, we will explore valuable insights into how to manage holiday spending effectively.
The holiday season often amplifies existing financial stress. The financial burden can affect you whether you're working extra hours at the salon or not. As stylist professionals, it's crucial for us to approach our financial situation without resorting to shame and embarrassment. Often, the personal finance industry uses shame as a tool -- a method that frequently leads people to avoid confronting their financial situation.
The first step to overcoming financial stress, especially during the holidays, is to rethink our financial habits and shift our perspective. Rather than avoiding bills and financial statements due to fear and stress, it's beneficial to start examining them with an open mind. It's essential to go beyond the constant fear of debt and visualize our finances more constructively.
One inspiring example is a hairstylist who managed to overcome her financial fear. After realizing she was significantly in debt, she decided to make a change. By assessing her spending habits in detail and drawing a clear financial plan, she managed to gradually reduce the debt and regain control over her finances. Her story serves as an motivating tale for others grappling with similar financial challenges.
The role of mindset in financial management cannot be overemphasized. It's important to consider that extreme budgetary restrictions can hinder more than they help. Instead, what's needed is a sustainable spending plan aligning with our individual values and lifestyle. The key is consistency rather than perfect adherence to a rigid budget.
It is crucial to monitor spending habits, particularly during the holidays. Whether it's spending on gifts, eating out, or indulging in personal purchases, it helps to keep track of where the money is going. With awareness, it becomes possible to make informed decisions about where we can cut back and where we need to invest.
In conclusion, conquering holiday financial stress as hairstylists is about mastering personal finance management. It involves rethinking old spending habits, developing a mindset shift, setting a practical spending plan, and keenly monitoring our spending. Remember, the goal isn't to create further strain but to make the holiday season and our financial health more manageable and less stressful.

We, the hosts of these two podcasts, share our experiences and journeys in the hairstyling industry.
Jodie, the host of "Hairstylist Rising," began her journey as an educator, sharing her expertise in building a successful clientele using Instagram. However, her initial foray into education revealed a crucial realization: not everyone possessed our knowledge. This recognition became the cornerstone of her mission, to empower hairstylists by teaching them the ins and outs of marketing themselves effectively.
As Jodie evolved in her career, she transitioned from social media management for brands and educators to establishing a full-fledged content marketing agency, serving as its creative director and strategist. Each step forward required letting go of tasks and embracing change, a process that challenged her ego and self-perception.
Misty Jayne, host of "The Cash Confident Stylist," joins the conversation, sharing our experiences of evolution in the hair industry. Together, we explore the intricacies of recognizing the need for change, even when it means relinquishing tasks we enjoy.
We discuss the concept of zones of competence, excellence, and genius, as outlined in the book "The Big Leap" by Gay Hendricks. Stepping outside of our zone of excellence can be daunting, but it's often the key to unlocking our true potential.
Both hosts emphasize the importance of assessing what truly brings us joy and fulfillment, recognizing that evolution sometimes involves letting go of activities that no longer serve our future selves. The conversation touches on the power of outsourcing, prioritizing tasks, and making conscious choices to align with our goals.
Join us in this insightful discussion on evolving in the beauty industry, embracing change, and finding our zone of genius.

In this episode, we discuss how marketing is an essential skill that every business owner should learn. Marketing is not just about attracting new clients, but also about potentially increasing monetization from your existing clients. If you have a solid relationship with your clients and provide them with an incredible guest experience, there are so many ways to monetize your email list in the next couple of weeks.
It's crucial to feel confident that you can pivot with limited drama, even if Instagram ceases to exist tomorrow. You need to be able to sustain the business that you're working to build, and marketing is not a skill you can afford to opt out of. Think about the fundamentals of haircare, for instance. These are foundational skills that you learn once and then continue to develop through continuing education.
You can learn the foundational skills of marketing, too, and I know that you have what it takes to do so. You've learned harder things than this before. It's essential to learn these skills one time so that you have that foundational knowledge when things change in the future, which they will. You can pivot and take what you're doing to the next level.
Having foundational marketing skills will help you avoid reckless decision-making that doesn't align with your brand and could alienate potential clients.
If Instagram were to shut down tomorrow, you would have a deep understanding of your ideal client and where they are hanging out. You would be able to choose platforms strategically and think analytically.
Marketing is the best way to take control over your business and attract clients, but it's also crucial to sustain it. It's not something you should be scared of learning because it's a fundamental skill that every beauty business owner needs to understand… and it’s going to give you the skills to conquer whatever may come in the business world.
As a micro salon owner and mindset coach for stylists, my guest Laura Symons is shedding some light on exactly what goes into a Micro Salon business model.
A micro salon typically consists of a suite or studio with 2-5 chairs, which provides the same salon experience as a larger establishment. It's an alternative option for those who may not be interested in owning a traditional salon business.
One of the benefits of the micro-salon model is that it comes with lower overhead costs. Additionally, it allows the owner to help build the lives and careers of others. However, it's important to note that there are still expenses associated with running a business, and budgeting is crucial for success.
If a stylist chooses to open a micro salon, they should keep in mind that they will be responsible for leading a team of stylists and assistants. It's essential to develop leadership skills and learn how to run a successful business.
Owning a micro-salon is just one of many paths to becoming a business owner. With dedication and hard work, it's possible to achieve success. Laura, for example, was able to generate a quarter million dollars in revenue in her first year of operating two studios with five chairs and four employees.

In this episode of the Hairstylist Rising Podcast, we dive into the topic of discounting and promotions in the hair industry. Our inspiration for this discussion comes from a post by Nina Tulio, a frequent guest on the show.
We are discussing the difference between discounting and well-thought-out promotions. While promotions can be an effective marketing strategy to attract new clients and offer value, discounting can have negative long-term consequences for a stylist's brand and reputation.
Next, we explore the reasons why hair stylists might be tempted to offer discounts, such as slow business or competition. However, we caution against relying on discounting as a long-term strategy and discuss alternative ways to add value without devaluing our work.
We tackle the topic of "charge your worth," a popular phrase on social media.
We are sharing insights on attracting new clients. We discuss the importance of building a strong online presence, delivering exceptional service, and leveraging referrals. We also offer tips for using promotions to attract new clients without sacrificing our value.
Overall, we hope this episode encourages hair stylists to prioritize their value and worth in their pricing strategies and promotions. By focusing on building a strong reputation and delivering exceptional service, we can attract and retain clients in the long term.

Today's episode is all about social media habits that you should adopt right now as a beauty pro. This is a mixture of actionable tips that you can apply that will help you attract more of your dream clients, as well as a breakdown of some of the things that I see in our industry happening right now in the social media space that are not altogether healthy and are probably contributing to some of the burnout and this epidemic of feeling like you're not good enough.
It doesn't have to be this way. I know that for myself and for many of my students, social media has allowed us to build businesses that we love and work with and connect with people that really align with our goals as business owners and as human beings.
So there is a really positive side to learning how to properly use social media. There's also a dark side, which I am going to be addressing today, as well as giving you some actionable solutions so that you can continue to market your business without the feeling of burnout and stress.
I'm gonna give you a combination of some tough love, some actionable steps, and some mindset tricks today, and I am really, really excited for the impact that this episode is gonna have on your business and your wellbeing because both of those things are important and really can't exist without one.
Every salon owner, esthetician, suite owner, commission stylist and independent hairdresser should listen to this.

What is the difference between branding and marketing as a hairstylist or beauty professional?
Ren Jones said this “Marketing is the equivalent of asking someone on a date. Branding is why they say yes”
In other words… when you’re marketing essentially you’re extending an invitation to be a part of your community, your business and your culture.
Your brand IS that culture, how people perceive you and how your values, voice and visuals communicate what you’re all about.
In today’s episode we will talk about both.
You don’t need tens of thousands of followers to build a profitable business by marketing yourself online… you do need the kind of personal brand that makes you irreplaceable in the eyes of your ideal clients.

Calling all beauty bosses who want to make a massive impact and massive income: putting your focus into your brand is the move. Today we are going to hit the branding conversation from a different angle and discuss how your salon decor can reinforce your visual brand identity, build trust and loyalty with your clients and establish the kind of consistency that leads to a sustainable and successful business.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… your visual branding is a vital part of communicating what you do, who you serve & who you are to ideal clients but I still encourage you to do the foundation work first so you can be sure your branding hits all the right notes and speaks directly to those dream clients.
With that being said I want to introduce you to my guest!

I have a confession to make, and that is that work has always been something that I either tend to over prioritize and even in some seasons under prioritize...
...or at least that is what I thought when I was chasing this unrealistic idea of "work life balance."
I think that for so many of us, the idea of work-life balance is just another goal to hit or something unattainable that we have to chase.
On today's episode, I have brought on Kim Kennedy, who is a stylist and a business coach for hairstylists. And we are going to talk all about what Kim likes to call salon life harmony.
So we're no longer trying to. Achieve some sort of balance. We are honoring ebbs and flows and really working on how we can incorporate boundaries that let us enjoy our lives and thrive in business. I am really excited for this conversation and I think that you are going to love it.

Find me on Instagram and come say hi!
For beauty pro’s specifically, batching content is hands down the best way to remove the social media overwhelm that creeps in. It eliminates feeling stressed if your day gets away from you and you can’t take a photo of every single client and it will actually make your marketing a LOT more effective.
In today's episode we are going to cover how to create better content that get's you closer to your goals, and spend way less time doing it.
Stop posting just for the sake of it and start seeing some results.
