How do we make sure our schooling doesn't get in the way of our education?
Darren’s Bio:
As a former high school teacher, teaching has always been at the heart of what Darren has done and continues to be to this very day. Working with solopreneurs and coaches to help them to start building stronger, more engaged communities; create better content utilizing storytelling, and showing them the messaging and sales strategies they need to convert their followers into clients is his passion. Being able to show others how he built a 6-figure business in just over a year without paying a single penny for advertising and work with them to replicate the same is incredible. Working closely with them to support, solve and give a kick up the ass if/when required is where so much of his teaching background comes into play. He doesn't see himself as a coach, but a teacher of these marketing strategies.

Kathleen is a self-described storyteller, who believes that everyone has a purpose and a dream and always has had a passion for learning about other people’s stories. At a young age, Kathleen’s love for travel, music, adventure, and curiosity of people was evident. She would run around her neighborhood with an old tape recorder of her mom’s, eager to interview anyone in site and would spend hours listening to their conversations. Throughout elementary school her heroes were Anderson Cooper and Lisa Ling who she watched every morning from school on their news show. Kathleen has spent her career speaking with brilliant scientists and engineers across the globe, connecting them to impactful teams. She offers strategic insight to her leadership teams to support long-term growth development and business plans. But if you ask Kathleen what she is the proudest of throughout her career, it would always be the trusted partnerships and collaboration she has built with her people. Originally from West Chester, PA Kathleen attended Dalhousie University in Halifax Nova Scotia, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology degree and spent years studying as a classical pianist. The world is Kathleen’s favorite destination. She has grown in her professional development working in both Canada and the U.S and has spent several years working as an ESL teacher for children throughout China. Her drive for adventures and passion for learning about other cultures has taken her to places such as Vanuatu, Fiji, Taiwan, Japan, France, Monaco, and Australia where she lived for 2.5 years.
Kathleen loves learning different perspectives through the eyes of other people, and she’s an individual who believes you are only one decision away from creating a new you and new path.

In Rob's words, "What I love most about what I do is the alignment with my personal mission to help others rethink our potential by sharpening our empathy, remembering our “Why” and empowering communities where we all can thrive together. It's an honor to work with my podcast team to share and celebrate the Heart and Hard Work of our guests who have not only mastered their passions and professions, but to share their behind the story tales of Heart & Hard Work and are living examples for us to learn from how ordinary people go beyond to bring mindful and meaningful action to improve lives everywhere and achieve the extraordinary. The choice to not only rise above the challenges before you, but the level of empathy and care that compels one to step out of the challenges that YOU are experiencing so that you can be alongside and lead someone else through theirs… that is where extraordinary lives. Even in the most trying times, remember how much it means to be offered support, guidance, a laugh (or my preference ...a little dance 😉)… that can't be fully described, but it is felt. That’s Heart. Gratefully building these opportunities to connect with these leaders and learn from their stories of Heart & Hard Work... I continue to draw not only inspiration and motivation but the purpose and drive to shine my authentic light through all challenges and give listeners across the world permission to do the same."

Being willing to make a fool of yourself, embracing your shortcomings and taking a step, is how we learn to become better teammates. In this episode, 2nd Year MBA students Tamara Norris and Pitu Sim do a podcast take over of the creator, Rob Maloney. He shares his experience overcoming traumas, how they have shaped who he is today, and learning to lead himself and others through compassion and joy. Rob shares his guiding principles and what drives the things he does from getting a Masters in Mathematics & Education to living in China and learning to speak Mandarin, leading MBA associations, starting a podcast, running an Ironman triathlon, and more.
Key Takeaways: These are ours, what are yours?
Speaker Bio:
Rob grew up on Long Island, New York, and attended Stony Brook University for his undergraduate and master's where he played rugby for the university team and was the recipient of the 2017 William J. Sullivan Service award. After completing his first master's degree in mathematics, he pursued the opportunity to travel, live and work in China. An array of international positions and experiences ultimately led to a position as an International Program Manager for a large-scale startup blockchain company have evoked his passion for driving impact as a multiplier leader and empowering teammates. After being displaced by COVID-19, he was homeless, jobless and locked out of the country and the normality of life. Battling the social anxiety of reverse homesickness, depression and imposter syndrome, he scrambled to find the next opportunity to bounce back until earning a full scholarship to pursue his MBA at the W.P Carey School of Business. Upon finishing his MBA in May 2022, he earned a full-time position with Microsoft as a Business Development Program Manager in Azure.
In his own words, “The most meaningful experiences to me are getting to fuel the passion of another and share experiences they value and care about most to build greater experiences together. It’s incredible how much being invested in others and being the teammate that I wished I had has changed my life's perspective and taken me further than I imagined was possible as a kid.” That's a large reason why last year he started the podcast "Heart and Hard Work" which is focused on recognizing the incredible people all around us who make a difference with their actions and together create a space where we can connect the years of wisdom and research with leaders who are putting them into motion today.

Witnessing and recognizing others has taken me across the world and dramatically changed my life. Sharing stories, both fun and vulnerable, opens our perspectives and connects us with wisdom and experience that empowers us to embrace our own ways.
We don’t all have sensational natural abilities, or the same opportunities and privileges, but we can create and model hope as we strive to be better teammates, leaders, and friends. For all of us battling and overcoming traumas, feeling misunderstood, isolated, outnumbered, and yearning to create positive ways to channel our experiences, we can take control together and support each other along the way.
Let’s get started now by welcoming the challenges, expecting and learning from the mistakes, and celebrating the wins throughout the process of evolving. Together, let's build a culture that witnesses the people around us for the heart and hard work that drives our passion and success.

Believing in yourself and empowering your team with attitude and posture are the themes that describe how Sherry Willman and Caitlin Byrnes lead by "doing whatever it takes to make it happen." Two extraordinary women talk about their lessons and experiences "biting the bullet", overcoming and striving far beyond any obstacle in the way.
A reminder for Long Island Legacy Lacrosse Coaches Ryan Gick & Matt Maloney, The Bayport Blue Point HS Girls Lacrosse Team, myself and all of us that the drive to achieve at the top level requires more than excitement and optimism. It's not losing sight of the fear and disappointment that lurks when we're less than our potential because we wasted our opportunity and are left asking "What if...?".
Misery loves company, but more importantly, company trumps adversity. Accepting nature, embracing sucky things together, and finding joy in the pursuit, rather than the outcomes, is the true mindset of a surfer that we can apply to so many of life's greater challenges.
Curiosity is an infectious tool we wield to unite and reveal how connected we actually are. When we put aside our own inner fear and anxiety, on the other side of a little "uncomfortable" silence is even greater comfort and mutual understanding.
The discipline to pursue our passion requires spending a long time in the dark without feedback or encouragement. No one is going to do it for us so if we are not constantly evaluating, revaluating, and aligning to what it is that we want more of then we will waste a lot of time and energy in the wrong direction, or even worse... never start. Harish Guda is an Assistant Professor of Supply Chain Management at Arizona State University sharing his experience about how he dedicates himself to exploring the world what is possible by "connecting the dots backwards". We can't sit around and wait for opportunities before we decide to start working at it. Sacrifice is critical to the process long before the opportunity arrives so that when it appears you are ready to seize it.
How can we get better at empathizing with others to learn more about them beyond a single story? Kangan China and Dawud Yakubu are two MBA candidates at the W.P. Carey School of Business, but what makes them extraordinary is not their titles and labels. It's the ability to block out the external and focus on what matters. Especially when we are stressed and faced with pressures, it's crucial to have spaces for conversations where we share and witness each other with mutual support. Reflecting on what drives us and from where we draw motivation to live our purpose is how we build the mental fitness we need to persevere.

We're people first and that's easy to forget. Spending time with someone like Stephen Treadwell is an ideal reminder that the people all around us want to laugh with us, have been through challenges like us, and want to be able to support each other despite everything that can get in the way. Often it's the people around us that are able to see more in us than we can see in ourselves and have profound impacts on our lives. How can we get better at recognizing and empowering in a way that invites people to appreciate themselves the way that we do?
It's a special thing to witness when someone leverages their passion and authenticity to break down barriers and do the unexpected in their personal life. Even more special is the effect that it has on others to pave the way and create new worlds of connection and possibility. Dylan Kennedy is a dancer turned teacher and young professional who lives his creed and is perpetually focused on sharing our passions and love through dance, entrepreneurship, and obtaining alignment to get to where we want to be.
Nothing comes from nothing, and often the brightest outlooks come from some of the darkest places. It's simple to agree that it's good to have a positive mindset, but often much more complicated to embrace amid adversity. Erica Day embodies what it means to persist in choosing an attitude of joy, grace, and gratitude while channeling energy and enthusiasm to make a difference for the people around her. Remembering that we are human means acknowledging that not every day is going to be easy. So more important than a smooth and perfect journey is the ability to get back to the focused mindset that we want to cultivate. Rather than being frustrated or upset about circumstances, the perspective to be grateful for all that we have keeps us aligned. Resilience is not that we are never knocked down, it's how quickly we get back up.
Happy Thanksgiving!! Today and every day, let's be grateful for the special people in our lives that have made us and everyone else around them better. Matt Totlis embodies the characteristics of what it means to leverage your superpower and unique abilities to benefit everyone; making them smarter, more resilient, or just comforted by being heard and feeling valued for their effort and presence. Matt is a leader by example and someone who any of us could connect with as perfectly flawed, yet still striving to align the person that he is with the person that he wants to be. Walking the walk is never as easy as expected and requires us to sacrifice where we are, for who we will become. Matt reminds us that as we are along the journey, more important than searching for happiness and satisfaction as a goal, is to allow the full breadth of our emotions to meet us where we are. Our perspective is everything and guides our actions which make us worthy not only to be loved but to be lovely as well.
Not every day is pretty. Not everything is going to go as smoothly as we expect it to. We know this, but somehow get surprised when it catches us in the moment and we are faced with difficult choices for navigating conflict. It's not something we look forward to doing, but the way that we handle conflict is almost always more important than the original issue. Courtney Robertson shares her experience in dealing with conflict and the extra challenges that come with confronting those close to us who we care about. She opens the conversation for us to consider actionable insights to learn from and strive to meet every challenge with the best of intentions. There will undoubtedly be mistakes, but making them requires the effort to act in the first place. Reflecting on them and correcting for the future is how we improve and evolve.
"So often people view things through their own lens." They see the output, but they don't see what was there before or what it took to get there. We judge the product in front of us and overlook the process. It's easy to be critical of the results, but it's more challenging to understand and assess the intentions in the heat of the moment, especially when emotions are running hot and we are frustrated. Mark Seasholes shares more of his experiences that have shaped his mindset and perspective. Communicating with the intention to understand reminds us of the person on the other side and their efforts. When we shift our lens to see things, not only from our own point of view, we learn more and find productive ways to persevere through conflicts and adversity.
There is always more to the story than what we see on the surface. With all respect for titles and the dedication and grit which earned them, it's the qualities of the person behind the title that we need to focus on and remember because they determine the character and conviction that produced the results we see today. Ned Wellman, Ph.D. reminds us that you can't be outstanding unless you are willing to stand out and shares his experience making sacrifices to be where he is today. We get more insight into his top three leadership quotes, learn more about how they have shaped his mindset and personal narrative, and get to spend quality time with Ned beyond the confines of titles and labels.
Too often our overly critical selves overlook our power to show up and make a difference. We downplay not only our ability to contribute and deliver but our potential for all that we can be. Getting to the person/position you want to be involved insecurity, uncertainty, frustration, and a number of overwhelming emotions. Amy J. Hillman, Ph.D. shares her experience overcoming "negative forces" to persevere to where she is today and continues to drive her to give more for others. She is a powerhouse role model for women and all people as she embodies true executive presence at its finest.
It's one thing to do well for yourself and it's ideal when you can get to a place where you are able to do good for others. Rather than waiting for someday, why not make a difference today? Trauma and challenges shape our identity and relationships with the people around us. Pitu Sim is an outstanding example of leader who has overcome hardships and carried the lessons learned to connect resources with those in need through education and information technology. Like almost everyone at one point or another he has walked the path of imposter syndrome and been the benefactor of privilege. The extraordinary thing is the way he not only is driven to make a difference, especially for those who experience systematic disadvantages, but his actions and follow through are consist and keep him aligned in his mission and purpose.
It doesn't happen overnight. There's a long winding path of obstacles and trials that we battle with to get to greater places. Making room for the "success" that we define requires the patience to wait for and the bravery to act on an opportunity. The growth we experience from the situations that make us uncomfortable sets the foundation for the new level that we are about to reach. This episode gets personal with Christine De La Cerda. The challenges she has overcome and the lessons she's learned are what fuel her each day to share energy, enthusiasm and fill the buckets of the people she loves and cares about.
Imagine devoting 13 years of your life to what you thought you wanted, getting right on the doorstep, and then finally realizing that it's not the right decision for you. Fulfillment doesn't come from any single element. It's the intersection of passions, skills, and what brings value to other people. To truly transform requires introspection and deep reflection about the right metrics to define our "success". John Wisneski, Ph.D. talks about the challenges, doubts, and frustration that it took to come to his realization. He shares his experience so that others on their journies can put into perspective what really matters and get closer to that realization in their own process.
Math isn't about memorizing formulas and doing crazy arithmetic in your head. It's truly supposed to be about making sense of problems and persevering in solving them, constructing viable arguments and critiquing reasoning, using appropriate tools strategically and precisely while making use of structure, regularity, and repeated reasoning. I see math for this and for what it means to be a "math person"... by these metrics everyone should think of themselves as a math person! Never fitting well into the conventional way of thinking about math and running from it, math is a challenge and thus an chance to differentiate and grow our transferable skills. The feeling when you persevere in a productive struggle has kept me driven through all areas of my life.
Reynold Byers as a clinical professor as Arizona State University shares his personal experience with failure, anxiety, stress and the pressure to provide for your family, but more importantly, the resilience to keep moving your feet and working in a positive direction.
Persevering through adversity brings us to contemplate our identity and strengthens the parts that we hold to be the most important. This perpetual distillation delivers the essence of who we are and that's not possible without making difficult choices. Abigael Omijie is a software engineer turned tea business owner who gave up a safe position to pursue her MBA and her passion. She is a risk-taker that is willing to move mountains for the people and things she is passionate about. She believes our life is as meaningful as we make it; therefore we should not let fear or doubt hold us back from achieving what we truly desire.
When you're willing to look like "the fool", you hold unlimited power to learn and overcome the challenges and pressures that get in the way of asking for the help that you need. Asking doesn't make us weaker or foolish, despite what it can feel like. Rather than holding it in and letting bigger problems fester, acknowledging when you don't know and asking for help understanding leads to learning. Letting go of the social anxiety takes practice, but if you spend your life limited by the fear of judgment you'll miss out on what you need to grow and progress.
Shubhangi Joshi is a Full-Time MBA Candidate at W. P. Carey School of Business. She made the decision to go back to get her MBA because she is an infinitely curious life-long learner dedicated to trying new things and building meaningful relationships. Her work ethic, passion, and self-advocacy are the reasons that as a former surgeon she continues to learn and strive to make a bigger impact with her effort. Now a coder and business analyst, she's inspired to drive results that help make a difference in the lives of others.
Call to action:
Have a perspective you'd like to share? Let's start the conversation.
This space is all about giving a voice to those like you who are driven to develop and improve. Sharing your valued point of view is a chance to be witnessed and break down the barriers that get in the way of achieving our own defined success.
We all face challenges and adversity in our unique journies, but that gives us a common bond. We want to cultivate communities of support to cary the conversations by witnessing and celebrating each other's evolution.
Let go of worrying about it being "just right" and let's talk about what's important.
There's so much power in how far we have come and there's only more to come!
It’s not a matter of “After I’m successful, then I’ll belong” … The pursuit of passion and “success” is our bond. It’s where we support each other on the way to our achievement it’s the proof that we belong.
This is how we Witness Evolution.
Tamara Kelson-Norris is a W. P. Carey Full-Time MBA Class of 2022 Candidate and someone who brings her whole self to everything she does. Too often we hold back our identities because we fear being judged. In practice, we somehow forget that everyone has unique characteristics and qualities that make them special and that they want to be accepted for and understood. The sooner we break down the barriers and realize that we are all people who laugh, cry, love, hurt, and make mistakes, the sooner we can get to real connections where we not only accept each other but to welcome and validate each other to be great. Bringing your authentic parts of your identity to what you do not only frees you to focus on what you need to, it liberates others to overcome the fear as well. From there we can grow together as our real selves witness each other evolution.
Speaking with Chikezie Anachu, W. P. Carey Full-Time MBA Class of 2022 Candidate about his life and professional experiences that have shaped his compassionate and loving personality. Exploring how taking care of your people has both made him who he is and continues to carry him to more and better in his evolution.
No matter what you choose to do in life or your career, inevitably people are going to matter. Making others a priority and investing in building up the people around me has consistently taken me further than when I've tried to go alone. Often the biggest impact on a team is the ability to make the people around you better through compassion, empathy, and using our efforts to bring out the best in them.
Nidhi Virdi is a W. P. Carey Full-Time MBA Class of 2022 Candidate and she shares her perspective from her experience battling with adversity that comes from outside the lines. An important key to overcoming the challenges is focusing energy on the people around us and realizing that care builds communities that pick us up when we need it the most.
We are all people first so we are going to have struggles and challenges. More important than hiding them and covering up is that we face them together and we are stronger for it. Reflecting on pain brings tremendous power to be ready in the future and more refined. We have the choice to establish and cultivate the kind of community we want and need, but it's the product of intentional effort. We > me.
Speaking with Chris Carpentier - W. P. Carey Full-Time MBA Class of 2021 about his experience with the program and perspectives on his own development over the past few years. This episode is particularly special because it represents bringing an idea to life in reality. You can talk about something and plan forever waiting for things to be perfect. But things are rarely going to be perfect so it's more important to recognize where you are today, take action and start being the difference for yourself and your people.
If we were already perfect, then we would have no reason to evolve. Encompassing the spirit of Personal Evolution, this first episode embodies what it means to accept our own imperfections and choose to share ourselves now for the value that it will bring to someone else along their journey. Lean into the power of our stories, struggles, and fun experiences for what they could be worth to help someone else. When we remove the barriers of judgment, we can bear witness to ourselves and others for more than what's on the surface. It's about being willing to sacrifice what we are now for everything that we will become.
