In this episode, Regina gets to know Jean Abernethy. Jean is the creator of the world’s most popular equine cartoon horse, Fergus (Equus-hilarious).

As shared in the Western Horseman (February 2016), “For more than 20 years, the blaze-faced bay has made audiences laugh at his equine perspective on everything from horse flies to flying lead changes. Everybody sees their own horses’ antics in him.”

Regina and Jean talk about Fergus, but they also talk about Jean—her start as an artist, the various interests she’s pursued, and the future of her beloved Fergus.

One thing is certain: with her shelves filled with awards and accolades, Jean and her Fergus will continue to be recognized and enjoyed worldwide!

Thank you, Jean, for bringing relatable humor to the lives of equestrians everywhere!

Like many equestrians, Regina has gazed upon equine art and thought, “What a beautiful picture. I’d love to own that.” Yet, she hasn’t felt educated enough about art to actually whip out the credit card and take it home. After all, no one wants to make a mistake when purchasing art! Regina sought the advice of Juliet Harrison, owner of the Equis Art Gallery in Red Hook, New York.

Here's what Regina has learned. There’s no such thing as the wrong choice or making a mistake when selecting art. Juliet says, if it speaks to you, it is the correct choice.

The Equis Art Gallery is a special place because it’s all about the horse. There is something for everyone because the focus is on the horse and not the equestrian discipline. Drafts, hunter/jumpers, stock horses, ponies, minis…you will find them all depicted in unique and beautiful ways. Plus, there are all price points at the gallery so you can test the waters of art ownership at a rate that’s comfortable for you. The internet and social media has allowed Juliet’s gallery’s offerings to be available for browsing at your fingertips. Can’t make it to New York? Juliet ships worldwide.

After interviewing Juliet, Regina garnered the courage to purchase her first piece of equine art. It’s a painting (acrylic on a Canvas Board) called “Windy Pony” by artist Kelly Moore. And she hasn’t regretted a single minute of the purchase! Regina encourages you to take the jump into the art world and invest in what makes you happy!

Heather and Marley love Pie.

Like, legit, they love their new adventures with their new horse, “We Love Pie!”

Lynn and Regina loved hearing about the ins and outs of the hunter/jumper world.

In this episode, Heather talks about her experience as a pleasure horseperson who went to the hunter/jumper segment of our industry. Heather and Marley are testing the waters and succeeding in this whole new horse world.

Hair nets, daily horse baths with soap, daily tack cleaning, no showmanship classes, no trip to the show office on arrival, unique show class order, and on and on are the new norms in their horse show world.

We’re all the same as horse people. And yet, our worlds can be so totally different! It’s fun!

We all know that one dog year is equal to 7 human years. But how does it work with our horses and ponies? This week, Regina, Lynn, and Heather are together discussing horse-years-to-human-years. You’ll discover why our gangly 2-year-olds remind us of awkward human pre-teens!

Regina also shares the Top 10 oldest horses on record. Did you know that a horse named Old Billy was 62 years old when he died? Can you believe that?

Fun Fact: Regina’s parents still have a pony born on their farm in 1988. Netherland Roamer will be 36 years old in 2024, so she needs to be added to the list!

How do you grow a 4-H equine program from 60 kids to 157 kids in two years? That’s the question Regina poses to Melissa Gordon, the Superintendent of Michigan’s Monroe County 4-H Horse and Pony Program, because Melissa and her team did it!

That’s a 162% increase in enrollment. That’s unbelievable. And that’s the kind of enrollment increase that our industry needs!

At a time when there is much discussion across the industry about declining youth numbers and barriers to entry (check out our April 22nd episode called “Preserving the Dream for the Next Generation with Emily Ream and Karen Waite”), Melissa’s story is one about innovation, dedication, and open conversations.

Melissa and her team have introduced innovative programs like the Equestrian Development Program, a leveling program, a Mini-Yearling Challenge program, a Stick Horse Project, and a Breyer Horse Project. Listen to find out more!

If you want to feel inspired about the possibilities for introducing youth to equines, you’re going to love this episode.

In this episode, Kathy Simmers, author of Jump the Moon and Posey’s Problem: A Pony Tale, joins Regina to discuss the true stories behind her heartwarming books. Kathy also gives us a preview for her new book about Pickles, another real-life pony!

Kathy’s journey as an author began after her daughter’s beloved lesson pony, Me Too, was sold out from under her at a horse show. Years later, as an adult, Kathy’s daughter set out on a quest to find the long-lost Me Too and, finally, bring her beloved pony home. Kathy knew that this remarkable story about Me Too needed to be told and Jump the Moon was published.

Just like Jump the Moon, Posey’s Problem: A Pony Tale is based on a real pony. As we all know, when a kid outgrows their pony, the pony is usually sent off to another kid. The pony doesn’t have a choice. Kathy wondered, “What is it like from the pony’s perspective?” As Kathy says, Posey has left a piece of her heart with each kid.

This episode - and Kathy’s books - will touch your heart.

In this episode, Regina sits down with Traci Bousman. Traci has been the year-end amateur champion with PtHA for the last few years with her special partner, Snoopy (AKA Vested Sensation). However, she had one big goal for 2023. Traci wanted to win the all-around title at the 2023 Pinto World Championship show.

However, on the night of June 17, Tulsa, Oklahoma, was ravaged by storms with winds of over 100 mph. The Pinto World Championship show was in full swing at Tulsa Expo Center and was forced to cancel before finishing all events. Feeling disappointed but grateful that everyone stayed safe, Traci and Snoopy left Tulsa, pivoted, and set their sights on winning the all-around at the Color Breed Congress. Mission accomplished!

Throughout the year, Traci weighed the pros and cons of retiring Snoopy. With nothing left to prove and after a hugely successful CBC, Traci decided it was time for Snoopy to enjoy 2024 and beyond as a retired boy.

With the decision made, Traci announced that she was starting an exciting new chapter for herself. Traci is embarking on a new career as a clinician and coach. Traci is ready to share her knowledge. And our industry will be better for it!

Congratulations to Traci Bousman and Vested Sensation on a long and highly successful career! Happy retirement, Snoopy!

The co-hosts also discuss the pros/cons of clinics, the lure and expense of private lessons, whether trainers should feel obligated to work with others outside of their client list, and an exploration as to how we can start funneling new people to our stock horse industry. Every equestrian has heard at least a few horse proverbs if they've been in the industry long enough. Horse proverbs are short pieces of general advice that are usually based on truth or folklore. Listeners, the topic Regina and Lynn are discussing on today’s episode is a serious one. The story they share is about a beautiful young woman who was actually stalked and murdered. But the hard part about this story is that it happened at her horse barn. For many horse people, the barn is a sanctuary. A place to get lost in thoughts while doing chores, and that may be why this story hits so close to home. By sharing Gracie’s story, the hope is to bring awareness and prevent other tragic losses. Regina and Lynn have delved into the dark side of the horse industry and they have been shocked at the amount of stories out there.

Unfortunately, countless stories about fraud, accompanied by ill-gotten financial gains, seized horse properties, as well as high dollar horses are nothing new in the equine industry in recent years. In fact, there have been at least two high profile criminal cases involving federal horse seizures and interestingly, both have ties to the American Quarter Horse Association.

Today, Regina and Lynn are discussing those stories in this second part of Horse Industry Crimes.

Both Lynn and Regina read and loved the books which is not a surprise since they were horse/pony obsessed, and still are. So it would only make sense that they would record an episode about the ponies of Chincoteague Island.

This is a bonus episode about barn cats. Regina and Lynn had an episode all about Horse Show Dogs (scroll back to listen to that episode if you haven't yet) and so they would be remiss not to have a special episode devoted to the cat lovers out there. Enjoy this bonus episode all about barn cats.

In this week’s episode we are back on the road with Regina as she talks with Kasi Huver, who she has known for the past ten years. Kasi is an instructor at Fox Run Stables, where she works with primarily children, including Regina’s own daughter. Regina and Lynn want to bring diversity to the Horse Industry Podcast, and while Regina has spent a lot of time in the Pleasure World, and Lynn is in the Cutter World, they thought it would be really exciting to bring in Kasi’s perspective, since she is from the Hunter/Jumper World. No matter what world you belong to, we know you’ll enjoy this episode! The band is back together in this second episode about 6666’s Ranch in Texas. Lynn & Regina start the episode by wondering, how does one ever cover the ranch and everything that goes along with it completely? They aren’t sure so there may be part three and part four to this episode. If you haven’t yet go back and listen to Part 1 before you jump into this episode where Lynn and Regina discuss the Anne’s of the Ranch, fondly known as Miss Anne and Little Anne, Anne Marion. Including her philanthropic contributions (that’s a mouthful) to the Ranch, Fort Worth, and the Southwest.

And Lynn touches on the topic of all the horses of the ranch: performance horses, race horses, cutting horses, and ranch horses.

Lynn is still on the road this week and in this episode she is sitting down with elite roper, horse trainer, cowboy and entrepreneur, Tater Lux.

When Regina and Lynn started the Horse Industry Podcast, they wanted to make sure that they had diversity in their topics but also in their guests they have on the show. That means they’re going to cover the pleasure horse industry, the cutting horse industry and they’re even going to cover some Rodeo, beginning with today’s episode.

Tater and Lynn discuss stories from Tater’s youth, including his claim to fame at the age of 14, how he lost a finger (you read that correctly) his Sophomore year of college, the World Series of Roping in Las Vegas, Tater’s first pony and more.

Get ready, this episode is all about bulls and blood, and dust and mud, and the roar of a Sunday crowd.

He’s trained multiple world champions in multiple different disciplines; cutting, halter, reining, roping, western pleasure, you name it. They've exhibited AQHA, Pinto, Paint, Appaloosa, Palomino, Buckskin, and even an Arabian cutter.

In this episode Bruce shares with Lynn, and listeners, some of his most memorable experiences including cutting horses on the White House lawn, a meeting in the Oval Office and movie star customers.

Regina and Lynn are back in the same state and in the same studio for today’s episode. And they couldn’t think of a better episode to bring to you while together than this episode about the history of the horse industry and specifically the 6666 Ranch in Texas. Lynn became intrigued about the 6666 logo that she kept running across every time that she would go to a cutting and then Regina got interested and decided to check into the 6666 Ranch. And the next thing they know they’re buying swag (you’ll have to listen in to see what they got). In today’s episode they discuss the history behind the ranch, how the logo came to be, and why the ranch is currently for sale. They even left in a blooper for your enjoyment.  Enjoy the first of what they hope will be many episodes about this legendary ranch.

In this bonus episode Regina and Lynn are discussing the not-so-glamorous, and downright gross parts of the horse industry. From boogers to bugs to beans (you'll just have to listen) you'll be laughing, nodding your head, and probably saying "ew, gross".

On this week’s podcast episode Lynn is by herself, and Regina is back in Michigan interviewing their friend, Angela Shiery regarding her Winning Details, Facebook page. (Come back next week to hear that interview!)

We’re calling these episodes On The Road, and will feature experts, and friends from the Horse Industry that we will interview while we are on the road.

In today’s episode Lynn is at one of her favorite places, The B&D Cowboy Depot, in Bristol, Oklahoma  with her dear friend Cheyanne Colclasure. They sit down and discuss how the Cowboy Depot boutique came to be, how Lynn came to upgrade her closet (hint, it has to do with a bottle of wine, Facebook and the pandemic) and all things Cowboy Fashion.
