A thought-provoking conversation with Kevin Hunt, a seasoned physiotherapist, and author of the book "Pain: The Ultimate Mentor." The discussion revolves around the paradigm shift in understanding pain and how it can serve as a guiding light towards healthier, more autonomous lives.

Part 1: Rethinking Pain
The conversation begins by challenging the conventional view of pain as a problem. Instead, Kevin suggests seeing pain as a solution, a vital signal that demands our attention. By delving into underlying causes of injury, we can unlock the potential for long-lasting health improvements.

Part 2: The Health Hexagon Framework
Kevin introduces the concept of the Health Hexagon, a comprehensive framework designed to help practitioners and individuals navigate the complexities of health and well-being. This hexagon encompasses various facets of life, including physical health, mental well-being, social connections, and more. It serves as a tool to initiate crucial conversations about holistic health. ```

Part 3: Empowering Autonomy
The podcast highlights that people are increasingly seeking guidance and expertise to take control of their health rather than passively relying on medical professionals. The Health Hexagon offers a structured approach to fostering autonomy and empowering individuals to make informed decisions.

Part 4: Being a Catalyst for Health
The discussion concludes with the idea that physiotherapists and healthcare practitioners can be catalysts for a healthier population. By helping individuals and communities to understand the root causes of their issues and guiding them towards long-term solutions, practitioners play a pivotal role in transforming lives.

In summary,

This podcast episode provides a fresh perspective on pain and health. It encourages listeners to view pain as a messenger and guides them through the Health Hexagon framework. Kevin's insights offer a valuable roadmap for both practitioners and individuals seeking to enhance their well-being and live healthier lives.

nsights on Arthritis and Cancer Connection! ๐ŸŒŸ

Hello #LinkedInCommunity! ๐Ÿ‘‹

I had the absolute pleasure of participating in a fascinating discussion led by David Rasnick, a renowned chemist with a background in pharmaceuticals and cancer research. Today's topic was all about unraveling the mystery of arthritis and its potential connection to cancer. ๐Ÿง

Traditionally, we've known arthritis as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, but David Rasnick challenged these definitions and shared some intriguing possibilities. He suggested that both types of arthritis might have more in common with cancer than we previously believed. ๐Ÿคฏ

One crucial element he highlighted was the transformation of synovial cells in rheumatoid arthritis, which bear a striking resemblance to pre-cancerous cells. These transformed cells exhibit uncontrolled proliferation, leading to the formation of a "panus" that comes into direct contact with the articular cartilage, causing tissue destruction similar to cancer invasion. ๐Ÿฆ ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Moreover, Rasnick discussed the potential connection between arthritis and carcinogens. He drew parallels to cancer research, where different carcinogens impact specific tissues, suggesting that arthritis could also be influenced by environmental factors. ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒ

The insights gained from this discussion challenge conventional thinking and prompt further investigation into the origins of arthritis. As we delve deeper into the interconnections of various diseases, we open doors to novel approaches to treatment and care. ๐Ÿšช๐Ÿ’ก

Arthritis can have a significant impact on individuals' quality of life, and understanding its potential links to cancer may revolutionize how we approach diagnosis and treatment. Collaboration between scientists, physicians, and patients will play a pivotal role in exploring this promising avenue of research. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’ผ

I invite you all to share your thoughts on this intriguing topic and spread the knowledge to create a healthier and more empowered society. Together, we can make a difference! ๐ŸŒŸ

As a physiotherapist, I've often heard stories connecting injuries to the onset of osteoarthritis. While there may be some truth to it, let's shed light on the intricate relationship between injury, osteoarthritis, and cancer.

๐Ÿฆต Injury and Osteoarthritis: It's true that injuries, especially those directly impacting joints, can accelerate the degenerative process leading to osteoarthritis. However, not all injuries result in this condition. Osteoarthritis is influenced by genetics, lifestyle, and age, making it a complex and multifactorial issue.

๐Ÿ’ช Understanding Cancer's Dormant Nature: Cancer cells are present in our bodies to some extent, but our immune system keeps them in check. These pre-cancerous cells typically remain dormant and don't pose a threat. However, certain medical procedures like biopsies can inadvertently trigger their progression, but it's rare.

๐Ÿงฉ Unraveling the Connection: Although injury-induced osteoarthritis and cancer share some cellular aspects, they are fundamentally different conditions. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint problem, while cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth due to genetic mutations.

๐ŸŒฟ Prioritizing General Health: Instead of focusing solely on diagnostic labels, we should prioritize overall health and wellbeing. Adopting non-toxic approaches, such as proper nutrition, exercise, and stress management, can enhance our body's ability to heal and prevent chronic conditions.

๐Ÿš€ Empowering Ourselves: By understanding the complexities of our health, we can make informed decisions and lead healthier lives. Let's debunk myths, embrace knowledge, and empower ourselves to take charge of our wellbeing!

Today, I want to shed light on the journey of Dr. Sam Bailey, a medical doctor who has ventured into a path of questioning and seeking a broader understanding of health.

With two decades of experience within the New Zealand medical system, Sam found herself at a pivotal moment of realisation. She discovered that much of the teachings she received during her conventional medical training were flawed or incomplete. This revelation ignited a spark within her to delve deeper into the realm of health, exploring alternative perspectives and questioning the status quo. Driven by a thirst for knowledge and a commitment to uncovering the truth.

However, her quest for truth has not been without its challenges. Sam's exploration and willingness to question the established norms have resulted in her facing controversy. Not only did have the accolade of being banned from YouTube, and her medical license was suspended by the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ). Undeterred, she has decided to appeal this decision and is currently awaiting the verdict in the New Zealand High Court.

Dr. Bailey raises a thought-provoking question regarding the differing levels of professional repercussions faced by medical doctors compared to other professionals outside the medical field who ask similar questions. It is a topic that encourages a deeper examination of the dynamics within our healthcare systems and the freedom of expression within the medical community.

I encourage you to reflect on the journey of Dr. Sam Bailey and the broader conversation it sparks. Let us strive for a healthcare landscape that encourages critical thinking, and ultimately places the well-being of individuals at the forefront. Together, we can shape a future where honest inquiry, intellectual curiosity, and the pursuit of truth lead to meaningful contribution.

Something I'm hearing again and again from clinical specialists is "I love what I do, but hate the environment I'm working in".

It is the recognition that they love the impact they make, and the professional fulfillment they achieve but are desperately frustrated with the environment that they're currently working in.

This is something that affects you not just professionally but also brings frustration into your personal life too.

In this podcast, I will share my story, how I changed that and how you can make a change too.

Stay tuned and enjoy.

Many clinic owners say "I wish I had more hours in a day" but that's actually not the real problem, the problem is you're lacking focus, getting nothing finished, and always jumping from one task to another".

Step 1: Put first things first
Put your most important tasks in your diry theday before so that you start doing those first the next day before getting into day-to-day distractions.

Step 2: Get to work early Get to work earlier than anyone else. Now that you know your most important tasks and know what to do, the best way to make that happen is to get up before your clinic opens and starts. This is the time when no one is disturbing you, no emails, no calls, nothing, and your mind is clear.

Step 3: Avoid Meetings and Distractions
When you must meet, keep it short and effective. Have an agenda for meeting's with just the people needed Turn off the phone, email, and notifications

Step 4: Do one thing at a time
Multitasking results in overwhelm and stress it is an unproductive way to work

Kate M: Welcome welcome to a very special podcast that we've got happening today with a very special guest Mike Michalowicz. Mike, is a multiple author and has joined us to share some wisdom and thoughts, particularly on how you can help your practice get profitable with some really simple tips and tools that you can implement. Now, we've got a number of questions that have come from clients and Celia and I have some questions that you and I have that where you would like to put too. So thank you very much, Mike, for giving up your time to join us.

Mike M: Kate, it's a joy to be here, so thank you for having me Celia. I appreciate this.

Celia C: So we're going to kick off with "Fix This Next". We, run a book club every month and we picked fix this next as our first book club book. So, I guess one of the questions was, is e essentially would you change any advice that you've given in the profit first based on what you wrote in Fix this Next?

Mike M: Oh, okay. Wow. So you're linking the two. No, the profit first book, I would not change. I think one thing I would encourage people to do more actively is to implement profit first, even without the confidence that will serve them. I've found that , the system, many people are skeptical of profit first or fix this next. And I get it. I don't create systems because I'm necessarily initially a believer I'm looking to solve a problem or struggle I'm having in my own businesses. And this is where I come from. These are things I've tested for myself and once it starts working and I start proving it out, I have confidence in it. So I think the one change I would perhaps make is in the books, just invite readers to try it out at a very simple level to dip their toe in the water. And then if it serves them to build upon it.

Kate M: And I think one of the things I've really appreciated from your books is you're not trying to fix the person I'm trying to fix the process. We're trying to accept them, recognize it with humans, with verbal, and actually what can we do to put a process in place, but deals with our behavior rather than trying to change, change us too much.

Mike M: Yeah, we, we need to celebrate the fact that we're human and that we have foibles and idiosyncrasies and differences because that's what makes us distinct in the market. We also have to realize that there's certain behaviors we have that can serve us extremely well and fighting those behaviors is the mistake. So it's interesting in profit first specifically is that I noticed many entrepreneurs and business owners, clinicians are told you got to follow the accounting system, follow the accounting rules and it forces us to learn something new. But our natural tendency is just to log into our bank account, see how much money we have and make decisions based upon that. So what I argue is don't change that if that's what our natural tendency is, let's create a system that uses that behavior to our advantage. You know, changing ourselves is really, really hard. So why not capture who we are and get the results we want. That's my goal in all my books

Kate M: And for listeners that are not familiar with profit first system, it's basically granny's envelopes or granny's jars that were on the mantelplace , where she was putting aside every single week, the rent money, food money. And you've got a jar for all of your expenses, including the tax man, your salaries and profits.

Mike M: Granny was like really smart. My granny, a little bit of a drinking issue, but that's, besides that really smart about carving up money to its intended use. What granny knew is that our behavioral pattern is that when we see something allocated to a purpose, we often work within the confines of that. So traditionally we have our money clumped together in one bank account. We say, I have all this money to spend, but once it's allocated to different intended uses, now we go into our bank account and we see, Oh, a certain portion is her expenses. Certain portion is to pay profit taxes and so forth. We will typically work within the confines of what's available for that purpose.

Kate M: And then we will get creative within those confines to find different ways of achieving the same end results.

Mike M: That's the best part that was missed by there, there was a study by a, a modern day philosopher named, his last name is Parkinson and we did, he studied how humans, how we use resources. His argument was as a resource expands, its availability. The more time I'm given to do something, the more we consume that resource, the longer it takes to do that thing. But if I constrain time and less time, we work more efficiently because it's forced frugality or less time, but also get innovative. We find shortcuts. We figure out tricks and hacks. Well, the same is true for money. As we constrain the money, that's what profit first will do. You'll take away all that money and start compartmentalizing. It. You're gonna have less money to do things, which is a beautiful thing because now it's forced frugality. We don't spend excessively, but to your point, we become very innovative. We find ways to stretch that money.

Celia C: On that point, in terms of going up to your full allocation target, do you recommend that someone that you've put targets in place in terms of how long that timeframe is So you recommend doing a start as small as you, as small as you need to, even if it's 1% going into your profit account, but wanting to get up to, you know, up to your target percentage, your timeframe.

Mike M: Yeah. Go in slowly. I'm preparing my daughter actually, who's working on our office now she's down the hallway. She assigned me up to run a marathon with her. And I'll tell you the first day of practice, which starts on Monday. I am not going to run a marathon when I stretch. I'm going to learn. I'm gonna start building to that long run. The same is true with Profit first there are aspirational allocations goals. We have, I call them taps, target allocation percentages, but those are numbers that really financially elite businesses achieve to start there could be like trying to run a marathon on the first day of preparing for a marathon. It's too much. It can cause injury. So we're going to start with low percentages for many businesses. Some of the allocations, we look at what they've done. Historically, we add 1% in, start inching our way there every quarter, we may add another percent and another percent toward, for example, for profit, while also reducing equivalent and operating expenses to slowly reduce what's available, that transition is much more successful. I'm proud to report. We have over 500,000 companies globally doing profit first. And we found that businesses that successfully do this start slow, and then let it grow.

Celia C: Yeah. I mean, we've got so many clients that have started using the Profit First system and, it's just amazing to see. I was speaking to a client this morning and she's halfway through building work. S he's building a custom office for her clinic, that, as she was working from home. And when I started working with her, she was in debt and she was really, really struggling and just couldn't see any way out. And that was her dream to have this custom-built office and through the profits first system, she's managed to do that. Oh, I'm so excited for her. Fantastic. S o another question that I had, in the profit first, you recommend, I think it's the 10th and the 25th of the month that you move the money, is it a steadfast rule. Is there a reason behind those two dates or could people do it once a week or once a month?

Mike M: Great question. So it's not a steadfast rule as a rule of thumb, I'll say the reason behind it by one start off that you do have flexibility. We want to do what's optimal for your business. The goal is to avoid, sporadic allocation money. So what typically happens is when money comes into a business, you're like, Oh, I have some money. Now I can spend it. So if I have a great windfall of some money coming in today, often, I'll it all by tomorrow on whatever immediate concerns I have. So it's very reactionary we want to do is get into a rhythm. And this is money comes in the business every day, hopefully, or, you know, a few times a week. And it accumulates then on a predictable period, we slice that money up to its intended use and then start using the money.

Mike M: Well, the 10/ 25 rule of thumb is that for most businesses, if we do this process on the 10th money mates until the 10th, we allocate money accumulate. So 25th we allocate is that it'll fund all those accounts, including operating expenses on those days. But when operating expenses are funded, then we can pay our bills and we pay bills on the 10th. They usually will be delivered to our vendors by the 15th, which is mid month is when half our bills are often due. When we do this process again on the 25th, they'll arrive at our vendors by end of month. There's usually when the other half of bills are due. So it's a method to get in rhythm in paying our vendors appropriately and on time, just like we deserve to be paid appropriately and on time. But for some businesses doing this twice a month is not adequate enough. It's better to do it every Friday or a select day of the week. So many businesses choose that. And the system works just as seamlessly. In fact, in our own business, every Friday is when we do this process. And it's very effective. The key though, is this, don't do it sporadically. Don't say, Oh, you know, I forgot to do profit first. I'll do it today. We want to get into a regular rhythm. So there's some predictability.

Kate M: So one of the grizzles that I'm sure you've heard many times before is, do I really need all these bank accounts. And what's this going to cost me an extra bank charges and extra bookkeeping charges and extra accounting charges.

Mike M: Yeah, I get that grizzle all the time. And here's, here's my feedback. First of all, realize that banks are not government owned entities. They're typically independent private institutions, which means they are vendors just like you and I are. Some of them go to a different clinician. You can go to another bank if they are willing to work with you. So banks can and will negotiate. So try that if you haven't yet. Secondly, are some banks that, particularly now with the advent of online banking and the COVID pandemic, a lot of banks are shifting the way they behave and they're removing those feeds. But lastly, this, if you must incur fees, look at the costs associated the fees with the gains and profits. We have businesses quadrupling 10 timings, their historical profits within one year. And the cost was, I dunno, 5,000, 500 us dollars, 50 us dollars. And the gain was thousands and thousands. And the interesting thing is for many banks, once you start hitting certain thresholds, they waive the fees. Anyway. So sometimes that fee period is a very short period of time.

Kate M: I certainly found that was the fastest way. Nevermind. Any fancy marketing strategies or anything the fastest, most profitable with my clinics was implementing the profit first system.

Mike M: It's it's human nature to look at the downsides like, Oh, this is going to be a little bit painful. I'm not going to do this, but the gain is massive. You know, we see this with exercise. People say, wow, I could be so fit if I simply would start exercising, but it's so painful to exercise. I'm going to skip it. Well, you got to look at the upside. If you get into this process, it's not nearly as painful as it looks like from the outside. And the upside is tremendous.

Kate M: So one of the things that is commonly a topic of conversation, is pricing and many clinicians underprice themselves quite severely. How often does pricing come up as an issue that needs addressing or figuring out?

Mike M: Yeah, I would say roughly estimating over 80% of the time pricing becomes an issue. So when you start taking your profit first, you are reverse engineering profitability. Your business will speak to you saying, you know, we don't have money to pay bills. So you only have two choices. You can cut some bills. And for many businesses, we can cut some where you're cutting the fat away, but you can't cut the muscle, the business that hurts you. So it removes some costs, but often increasing prices is the most important thing. Here's the amazing thing that will have us. Don't understand. Our clients actually want us to increase prices and here's the deal they will never ever say, Oh, can you double the rates on me. Can you charge me more. But what they will say as my clinician, I want your full undivided attention. I want the best service you can render.

Mike M: I don't want you worried and panicked. I mean, could you imagine you start your session with your client and you say, I am so stressed. I have no money. I don't know what to do. Okay. Let's start the procedure I can make. No, no. I stay away from me, our clients, our undivided attention. And the only way to provide optimal service is to remove the worry, the financial worry that we have. And the way to do that is to charge appropriately for the value we deliver. You can't worry about the next client. So if you increase your prices, you can care for your client better. And that's what they want. Now. Some customers may say, Oh, you increase prices. I am leaving. The customer does that. It's called a price shopper. They don't care about the value deliver. They care about the cheapest option. And do you want someone that wants the cheapest option Probably not most customers. And I find, it seems like 90 to 95% of customers say, what took you so long May not. Maybe they'll use those words, but they say, I love your services. I value you. And I know I was taken advantage of,

Celia C: I think this is going to be absolute music to our clients is because clinicians just struggle so much for putting their prices up. They agonize over it and they're agonize and they do put their price up. That actually nothing happens.

Mike M: I heard nothing happens. Well, your profit increases. That's beautiful. Almost none of your customers leave you, which was the biggest fear we have. But here's, I found so interesting. I heard, and I'm going to bastardize this statistic, but just yesterday, I was listening to an expert who said, if you increase your prices by only 10%, you can lose on the average customer, upwards of 20% of your customers because of the curve customers, some of your patients or customers, do very little business with you yet. They consume a lot of mental space. Some customers, clients, patients do a lot of business with you. When you increase prices. Those customers who do a lot of business with you now you're charging 10% more. They generally will stay and love you for it. There's other customers that go away. We may lose a handful, but they were barely making any money for us in the first place. That 10% on our best customers, way outpaces, what we lose. So when you raise prices, you'll figure out it was never soon enough. You should've done this way.

Kate M: So you have another book coming out in September.

Mike M: Well, you staged me perfectly, I appreciate it. Kate it's called "Different is Better". And all my books I study by first identifying a significant problem. And then I do the research to see, is there a unique, simple solution by found one with marketing. So many business owners struggle with marketing. And the reason is because they're using marketing plans. That's what blew me away. Marketing plans are a strategy for rolling out marketing. But until we know, if the market is going to work or not, a marketing plan could be a problem. If we're doing something that doesn't work. So we first need to prove through marketing experiments, experiment, find what works and then use the marketing plan. Different is better. This new book is how to do rapid marketing experiments. And the core I found of successful experiments is differentiation. People notice things that aren't the same. So, last time I was in England, people knew I was the American because I had a different accent. Very easy to identify. We can link onto it. If everyone is doing email campaigns to market, to their patients, you should do something. That's not an email market campaign, do different. And your likelihood of marketing success amplifies significantly.

Mike M: Exactly it that's exactly it. And it's very hard to do in practice because we want to do whatever else is doing. It's best practices. It works for everyone else, but doing something that's different, puts us out there. It makes us very visible. And there's another element too, just different alone. Isn't necessarily the only solution different gets noticed. But if it's repulsive, like I could, I could dress like a clown today. Like, Hey, Yucca, Yucca, bozo. The clown showed up. You'll notice, but you'll make, I don't want to clown. I want someone that gives me good advices professional. There's an incongruency here. So you must be different and it must be attractive, compelling. The right people might say, that's what I want. Once you have them engaged, the final step is you must direct them to take an action. Don't leave an abandoned. Say, Hey, you notice me and you liked me. What you want them to do. Sign up for my email, make a purchase, subscribe to this list. We have to give them explicit and specific.

Kate M: And I think one of the things that can help clinicians not feel too terrified about some marketing and how to go about it and how to conduct a thousand marketing experiments whilst they're still running a business busy clinic. One of the things that can help differentiate is just being themselves!

Mike M: You've identified the magic formula. I was traveling through Ireland and Oscar Wilde, passed away when he was in Ireland and he had a famous quote. He said, be yourself, everyone else is already taken. Boom, that's the epiphany. If we simply lean into who we naturally are, there's inherent differentiation. We have to be unabashedly ourselves.

Kate M: Just speaking to the clinicians that might be listening, this is what you're doing all day, every day in the treatment room, just behind a closed door, you just got to open that door. You spend all day every day talking to people, answering questions, marketing to them the solution to get rid of the back pain and neck pain. You've just now got to do the same thing to a wider audience rather than just behind the closed door.

Mike M: Yeah, I agree. I was working with a psychologist who did her sessions or therapy sessions behind closed doors. She then took a video. There was some reality TV show took this video and actually did a psychological session with the people in the show. She was critiquing the show. It was really intriguing and interesting. People are very compelled. So you can maybe do demonstrate some of your services via video or something this way. It's something you're already doing, but put it out in a new way that people haven't seen necessarily much and you'll stand out.

Kate M: What you're saying at the end is differentiate. Differentiation can just be being your authentic self, measuring what works what's attracts, what doesn't attract, but making sure you have the confidence to have that very clear call to action at the end and keeping that simple. Linking that back to the profit first principles. One of the questions I certainly had was when I was looking at my ops expenses. Well, what percentage should of the ops expenses ideally be going in marketing and client acquisition

Mike M: Y So then we can get a little more sophisticated with profit. First. We start calculating the return. Here's an example. If you gave me, if I gave you one pound and in return, you gave me two pounds. I'll keep on giving you a pound, a pound over and over again because that's called a ROI return on investment. So what we need to do is first we start low, small experiments, use a very small portion of your budget, maybe just one or 2% of op ex to test the market. We have to prove what the return rate is on our investment. Once I start getting that, you know, for every pound I put two pounds are coming out. Now it's go time. Now we're going to amplify that. And maybe I want to spend more and more. So there is no fixed number except for start slow test until you prove that your marketing is working the way you want, then start leaning into it to amplify it.

Celia C: That makes perfect sense. I was just speaking to someone that does GoogleAdwords and, you know, he said he could tell clinics to spend a thousand pounds a month, but actually what he does, it says, let's start with a hundred or 200 pounds a month. Google spend let's prove, prove it, test it. And then, and then when we know that it's working, we can start increasing the spin because you have got your return on investment,

Mike M: But that's exactly right. And that's a very smart strategy that he shared. And also with a realize that marketing doesn't live forever. Here's the irony about being different. If you're consistently different and people are noticing at a certain point, it becomes an expectation. Cirque de Solei is a good example. The very first time I heard of Cirque de Solei, like this is the coolest thing. Look at all these acrobatic effects are doing and the how theatrical it is. But once I saw it twice, two or three times, I didn't need to keep seeing it. It was amazing, but it fulfilled me and we get exhausted from that. But the next new thing will intrigued me again. So the marketing that works today, keep on leveraging it, milk that cow for all it's worth, but at certain points going to run dry and we did try new different marketing.

Kate M: So what we're describing here is you actually need to understand that the client lifetime value, I'm sure many, many business, it's not just in healthcare, aren't doing that. How would you recommend that somebody goes about measuring the lifetime value of clients

Mike M: Yeah. So there's a real simple, rapid way to do this. Look at what you charge a client, for your service, multiply it by how many times you render that service to that client in a year. And then how many years you have them. And that becomes the lifetime number. So say I charge a hundred pounds per visit. I do 10 visits a year on average as a thousand pounds patients with me for 10 years. Well, that's now 10,000 pounds. Now I have a number. This is not the perfect number, but it is more than adequate to figure out the investment. Once I know I can make 10,000 pounds from a patient, I may say, well, that's, that's worth a hundred dollars bet, but you have to understand this bet. When I do a hundred or a hundred dollars, a hundred pounds of marketing, I do a hundred pounds of marketing.

Mike M: I may not win that 10,000 pound patient. So am I willing to bet that with the risk of it not happening, but the opportunity of trying with another future prospect patient and another one, and that's where we kind of find this number. Often people discount their marketing budget because they don't understand the lifetime value. They say, you know, even a pound sounds a little bit much, but the upside is 10,000 pounds. When you start thinking, you can invest a hundred pounds in pursuing a prospect, it opens our mind to, Oh, maybe it's not just email and a social media ad. Maybe I can actually mail a little box. When I open up, there's a video of me speaking to them of how I'm ready to serve them, but that may only be 50 pounds. And that is so different. It stands out and get noticed. The likelihood of that 10,000 pound patient is much more likely. So that's how I do the analysis

Kate M: Where you're describing here is by actually having this analysis and having this measurements in place, it stops shiny penny syndrome of being convinced by the next marketeer, but their shiny, whatever widget will work for you because you actually got much more knowledge and empowerment about what you already know is working and what return

Mike M: That's exactly correct. And I'll tell you the next shiny object is what everyone's glomming onto. The different factor can go pretty quickly. Now different is also specific to your community. So if, if you're the first to do something in your community with whatever else is doing, but no one else has done it for community, it's different. It'll stand out. I know there's this app called clubhouse that you're noticing

Mike M: It's very quickly going to exhaust itself because everyone in my community is aware of it. So for me to use clubhouse to stand out and distinguish myself is not necessarily viable. But the interesting thing is people run to clubhouse and I'm not picking on that, but as people run to that, it means they're running away from something else. So my question is what are they not doing. That's the new opportunity to be different again.

Celia C: We had one last question from a clinician and it's a very general question and, and an observation. So she listens to a lot of podcasts and she goes, you know, she finds experts in the field and she feels that her perception is, is like most of those experts are not the main childcare provider at home. So she's trying to run a business and she's a main childcare provider. And so she wanted to know, do you have any advice for how, you know, main childcare providers can still start a business successfully

Mike M: Yeah. So, well, a couple of things. One is understanding the different types of buyers. And this may not answer this question directly, but, when it comes to selling an offer, you don't naturally have one buyer. There can be multiple people. There's, what's called the beneficiary, the person that derives the benefit of what you're offering there is the backer, the person that financially contributes to it. And there's the initial person that makes the initial discovery. That could be a third party saying, this is something we need to explore. So first in that business I'd understand who are the buyers I'm selling into, but the most important thing is regardless of your personal circumstances, you're the primary care provider. Not the question is what is your area of interest If you have a passionate interest of something, the likelihood of you excelling in that area is much better than not.

Mike M: I love writing books. And therefore when I wake up in the morning, I'm writing away. I think it will be challenging for someone who does not love to write books, to have that same energy and discipline to keep at it. They may have the same potential, but if they don't have the drive every morning to be working at it's unlikely, they're going to get these opportunities to stand out. So I would just say, regardless of your circumstances, what is your true inner driving passion interest areas of intrigue, try to deliver your service offering through that because you'll naturally excel. Hope that helps,

Kate M: I'm sure it will. Thank you. Well, thank you very much, Mike, for joining us today and thank you very much for answering the questions from the clinicians and from ourselves. You've given much inspiration and much thoughts into clarity, to some of the points of discussion that we will very much look forward to reviewing your new marketing book in September .

Mike M: Bye Kate. So it's been a joy being with you. Thank you for having me and thank you for the good work that you do.

Kate Markland: Good afternoon and welcome to The Clinic Owners Business Club Lunchtime live with Celia Champion and myself, Kate Markland on Thursday 3rd December. So I'm sure you want to know, just like I do. What sorts of Gin Celia had in last night's advent calendar?

Celia Champion: It was an excellent, apple and spice. It was absolutely gorgeous. Did you have another chocolate brussel sprout?

Kate: We have an Advent Train and my six year old has decided to be the elf and has put chocolate brussel sprouts throughout it. This is much to his delight as he knows I don't like sprouts, but still every Christmas day, I have to have one to keep granny happy. Anyway, today is Thursday and where this week is going? It seems to be flying by and on Thursdays we answering any questions. And this particular question has come in and I know full well, it consumed an awful lot of time and conversation in my clinic too. So I think it's important to answer the question....

What Should The Team As I Wear In The Practice?

So I really think from my own experience, it's something that you do have to make a decision about and that you do have to have guidelines in place because if you don't, you will get tested on them.

Celia Champion: I think it's a very personal choice. So I think you need to think about want to be projecting about your practice and your clothing is going to be part of that. So it's part of your brand. Work out what your kind of key core values are, and what you want people to be saying about you when they come into your practice. Maybe you want them to be saying that your professional or your clinical, your casual, you're comfortable family friendly environment, you've got all those kinds of things are going to guide you as to what attire you might be wanting to wear. I've seen so many different things in practices. You know, I've seen people wear shirts and ties, people wearing clinical tunics, clinical coats, or you get a lot of clinics that have branded polo shirts and more kind of sporting gear.

So if you're very sport orientated clinics, then maybe you'd go down that route. I suppose the one kind of thing that one needs to just be careful with around the clothing is if you're insisting for your self-employed to be wearing your branded clothing, that could contribute to suggest that they should be employed rather than self-employed, which is obviously a different conversation altogether, but it is something that you need to consider when you're supplying uniforms, whether you charge for them, whether you get them to wear branded stuff.

Kate Markland: It really made a big difference for me when we had some very clear guidelines. And initially I remember writing guidelines, I put down the position of the business on piercings, on tattoos, on hairstyles. And I remember at the time thinking really does it really needs to be this detailed, but it does. It does because you will get tested on those details at some point in time. And at least if you've got a guideline or a policy about it, you've got something to refer back to and just help make it clear for everybody so that you reduce awkward conversations that need to have, with team members.

Celia Champion: What Kate was saying about being very clear about it and outlining it, that should be discussed in the interview stage already so that the people that are going to accept any position that you're offering already know what is expected. And then the other thing with clothing is, unfortunately, some people just don't have the same level of standards. So you know, you, you do have to maybe be a bit clear about, how often you change your shirts, that you have to iron your shirts and tucking in. I know it sounds, like surely that's common sense. There is no such thing as common sense, your standard is something different from someone else's probably.

Kate Markland: And what we have to remember is clients know, from other services, how to judge what we wear, whether our skirting boards are clean and how we present ourselves, but they don't know how to judge or assess our clinical skills.

But they can very quickly form an opinion on whether you look smart, professional, clean, and tidy, whether they feel safe in your hands by how you're presenting yourself.

Celia Champion: Hopefully that helps. We will be back on Monday for marketing Monday. Have a brilliant weekend.

Kate Markland: And we'll look forward to hearing about what Gin you get in your advent calendar over the weekends Celia take care, have a great time. Bye-bye.

Kate Markland: Good afternoon and welcome to The Clinic Owners Lunchtime Live on 1st December. I hope your opened that 1st door on your advent calendar and had a lovely treat . I got a chocolate brussel sprout this morning.

Celia Champion: I got a gin calendar this year, so I haven't opened mine yet. Mine will be opened every evening. It's a little bit early to start the day with I think.

Kate Markland: Celia Champion and myself, Kate Markland are here to give you some hints and tips, advice, and support in terms of running your health care practice.

And today we're talking about time and the fact that time is our most important asset. So I'm going to hand you over to Celia . Who's going to help explain this a little bit further, over to you Celia.

Celia Champion: Thank you. so we all have the same 86,400 seconds every 24 hours And we need to just really be able to make the most of it. So I just want to talk through Stephen Covey's, time management quadrants,

to give you a bit of an assistance in terms of just managing your time a little bit better. So there are four quadrants, we've got, things that are urgent and important, so they have deadlines things like your tax return, as an example, you know, you need to get it done by a certain time. so you just have to crack on and do them. So, a phone ringing is, you know, if it's a patient booking in, you're going to be taking that phone call because it's there and you're gonna be treating your patients.

Celia Champion: Those are, you know, kind of can be seen as important and urgent to be, to be sorting out. So that's your first quadrant. The second quadrant are those things that are important, but there's no urgency to them. That quadrant is one of the most important quadrants that you need to look after because it's those things. That's like the planning, it's your marketing, it's your relationship building. It's all the things that you don't have to do. But if you do do them, you reduce the amount of urgent things on your desk. So those are the first two quadrants. And the third quadrant is the area that it's important to be done, but it's not important for you to be doing it. So it might be urgent, but it's not important that you, that you need to do it. So that quadrant is the area where you look at, what can I delegate

And that's where you start looking at, how much is my time worth.

So you can take an example of say, let's say you treat patients and you charge ยฃ50 per session, so if you treat a two patients, you'd be earning ยฃ100/hour, why would you then be doing the cleaning, which you can pay a lower fee per hour or the bookkeeping or those kinds of things. So it's really looking at what can you delegate and, and being really strict with yourself because sometimes, practice owners think, Oh, well, I'll just do it because it's much quicker. If I do it myself, instead of spending the time in the important not urgent quadrant. So rather take the time, train your staff so that you don't have to be doing those urgent things that aren't important for you to be doing.

Celia Champion: And then number four, the quadrant number four is the area where it's not important and it's not urgent. It is those things that you really need to ditch, and you need to restrict yourself in that area as well. And sometimes doing a time and motion study for a week or so can really help you to work out what things you should not be doing. I was just speaking to a client this morning and she said , she knows that she needs to do like some, some of the stuff on LinkedIn and Twitter, but what she finds as she goes on and then it is kind of an hour later, and she's got lost down, just looking at things. She finds herself thinking, what am I actually sitting doing here. So, make sure that you are actually calculating how much time are you spending on those kinds of things. So, I hope that, if you sit down and just dedicate all your different tasks into those quadrants, that you will find that helpful.

Kate Markland: You can find out all sort the things. If you list everything your doing, put them in those four quadrants, you can identify the things that you need to eliminate, that you can get rid of altogether. Some of the things that you can transfer and that's transfer, not abdicate.

As Celia described , you've got to make the time to organize what you're transferring. And I think the wonderful thing is, as a clinician is we're used to living almost like a school timetable of one hour, half hour, 45, 15 minutes slots. Can you do exactly the same with the remaining tasks So perhaps you need to block out some time, maybe a Wednesday afternoon or Tuesday afternoon to run, to do all your business administration, but can you put it into the same slots that you do with your clients, or it happens with the school timetable. So you know that between 1pm and 2pm is marketing between two and three is finances or whatever it is. So you're getting organized and using that great, healthy habit that you have of keeping to a schedule and applying that principle to, to the business administration. So we're back again tomorrow.

Celia Champion: Tomorrow, we're going to be talking about whether it's a good time to be investing in your practice at the moment. Next Tuesday we'll be launching our book reviews. So we look forward to seeing you either tomorrow for our kind of talking about whether you should invest in your practice, and next week for training. And then we'll also be back on Thursday. So have a fantastic day and we look forward to seeing you tomorrow. Thanks for joining us.

Kate Markland: Bye bye for now.

Kate Markland: Good afternoon and welcome to lunchtime. Live on 30th of November, I Kate Markland and I'm joined by Celia Champion.

Today we're talking about the words we use, and why they are important, to make sure that as clinicians and clinic owners that the messages we're putting out r esonate with our audience, it's very important that we are not communicating too much clinical language and not paying enough attention to thinking about the words and the language that our clients will resonate with, especially when it's in the written form. So today we're just going to take some time to think about how we can, apply a simple framework and some simple rules that we can follow to make sure our message resonates with our clients and potential clients over to users.

Celia Champion: Yeah, so, we are a great fan of a book called building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller. And in that he gives us a very simple framework to follow, to be able to get our message across, in the language of our clients. And so that they really understand where we're coming from and how we can help them. And he likens it as, as if you're creating a movie and there's seven clear steps in the scripting. so the first thing is you have a character. Now the character is often mistaken, as you think you're the character,

but actually the character is your client. So your patient is your character. So you really need to understand who your kind of key perfect patients are. So they, your character, and then they have a problem. And he has three different areas of the problem.

Celia Champion: So they have an external problem, which would be their pain. So in the beginning , you're able to say , I work with

runners and understand that sometimes you might get running injuries, so you get a painful foot to a painful knee or painful hip, that causes an internal problem. So you're communicating with your patient that you understand that that pain causes an emotional problem for them as well, that they feel distressed about it. They feel upset that they can't do what they love doing. And then he also talks about a philosophical problem. And I think that that's really relevant in, this particular sector of private health care, because often the philosophical problem might be, Oh, well you're 60 or 70 or 80. You're bound to put up with pain. Oh, you've just had a baby you're bound to have to put up with pain.

Celia Champion: Where as you as clinicians know that actually that's not true,

so you can help them. So you have to overcome, you have to help them overcome those philosophical problems. So you have a character who has a problem who meets a guide, which is you. And in meeting that guide, you need to put out your why, why they should come to you rather than someone else. And you know, why, why, why are you credible to being that person to help So you have the character who has a problem who meets a guide , who gives him a plan and calls into action. So you're giving them your advice about what the best treatment going forward is. And you're calling them to action as to what they need to do along the way that avoids failure and results in success. And so when, and when he talks about avoiding failure, it's not about scaremongering your, your patients. It's actually just saying, you know , we don't want you to feel frustrated that you can't go into your park runs. We want to help you get to the success of getting back on the road, running injury free. And just in that very succinct way, you can use that in your conversations. You can use that, in your marketing materials.

Speaker 1: Wonderful. And I think there's a really lovely acronym that I had once that stuck with me. What's in it for me, FM. So constantly, if you thinking about it, when you're listening to the radio, you want the DJ to be talking to you rather than asked you. And I just remember reading a book by Alan Pease and it described having this concept of having a radio show. And you're always thinking about what's in it for me, FM what's in it for your audience. And so when we're writing, we're really conscious of cutting out all the, we, we, we, we, we were talking about you talking to you, just like, you'd like a good DJ to do, to you and talk you rather than at you. And it's very easy in your copy to look through. Sometimes if you've written something on your website , count all the times you have said we , rather than talking about you, talking about your potential client.

Celia Champion: Good. So we hope that our short life has helped you, thinking about your messaging. We'd really encourage you to go and look at all your different messaging, the language that you use with your patients, but also what's on your website and in any of your marketing material. And,

and don't forget your social media too. So we look forward to seeing you tomorrow. If, when again, have a fantastic day.

Kate Markland: Bye bye for now.

Kate Markland: Good afternoon and welcome it to The Clinic Owners Business Club, Lunchtime Live with Celia Champion and myself, Kate Markland on Wednesday, 2nd December.

So yesterday Celia shared with us that she had a gin advent calendar. I've got a chocolate brussel sprout one . And last night you were going to open your gin door number one.

Celia Champion: I had a beautiful, Gin from from Devon. So it was really, really lovely.

Kate Markland: Lovely. so today we're talking about whether now is the right time to reinvest in your practice. If you are creating profit in your practices, there are three things you can do with the profit. You can either pay down the debt, you can pay yourself a dividend as the owner, or you can reinvest back in your practice. And today we're just going to think about the things that you might want to consider if you are considering reinvesting in your practice, because obviously when you make that decision, there's also the opportunity to perhaps make more money or make a bigger impact on your community. But there's also the potential to lose any money that you choose to reinvest in your practice as well. And you might wish you'd made one of the alternative decisions of paying down debt or paying yourself dividends or doing nothing and just letting cash accumulate. So over to you, Celia, for some tips to help the clinic owners decide whether now is the right time to reinvest in their practices.

Celia Champion: I mean, obviously we've been through quite rocky roads, this whole year . So it pays, to be picky now as you decide if you're going to reinvest or not. But I have seen a lot of reinvestment in the clinics that we work with over the last few months. I've got some clients that have looked into different equipment that they might bring on board to broaden their services that they provide to clients. So, I've got a few clients that have invested in shockwave machines, few clients that have invested in IDD machines, and then also just other products and the services that those products relate to so that they can actually supply the products to patients. So, there is an, there's an element of investing in things that you can offer, you can broaden your services, but then I think that there's also been what I've seen, where we've actually seen quite a bit of investment in practice managers to have training so that they can take over more and more and more of the duties. There's a thing about investing in your team members now, so that they can support you in rebuilding your practice. If indeed, that is the case for you at the moment.

Kate Markland: So what I'm hearing that is really making sure that you have the business functioning well and making sure that you are investing in a healthy business and good business operations. And that might be very, very low cost that might, in some cases, just the case of getting yourself organised. And perhaps before you're buying any expensive equipment or reinvesting in the services that your business operates, that you're making sure you conducted a listening project to know what's really important to your clients and what their needs are, as well as what your team requirements are, so that you're making informed decisions based on the numbers and based on what your clients are seeking rather than based on any assumption.

Celia Champion: In terms of, when you're looking at investing in marketing, it's important to make sure that you're recording where all your new patients come from so that you can make an informed decision. So if you are considering investing in Google ads find out from , other people that have done Google ads, what their return rate has been. That applies for any service that you're going to be outsourcing, get recommendations of a service providers, from people you know, and speak to a number of people before you decide on which supplier you'll be using.

Kate Markland: Wonderful. So that way you're making sure you're measuring the return on investment for anything that you do and your money that you do reinvest in your business and you're using the best possible suppliers, so it is a very informed decision.

Tomorrow we have a live Q&A . So if you've got any questions then do let Celia or I know, and we will answer any questions that come up. Next Wednesday, because Wednesday is all about wealth creation for you as clinic owners, we are speaking about the road to recovery and helping you start to plan or create a profit plan for 2021, have a wonderful afternoon. And we look forward to seeing you again at one o'clock tomorrow. Take care for now. Bye bye.

Kate Markland: Hello and welcome to The Clinic Owner's Business Club, Lunchtime Live on Thursday 26th November, with Celia Champion as myself Kate Markland . We hope you're having a wonderful week, we are

taking time on Thursdays to think about all the things that we would like to be thankful for. And one of the things we're thankful for is for you guys, listening, watching, and tuning in through us and starting to ask us some questions. So on Thursdays going forwards, we're going to be doing a live Q&A to any questions that you've messaged us with or asked the group during the week, or if you want to join in, then you are welcome to hop on and send us any questions you'd like answering during the live. So, Celia, I know has a super question from somebody about how to evolve their team and their role within that team and restructure perhaps.

Celia Champion: Yeah, so, I was asked the question about , how do they develop some of their internal team members, where they can see that they've really got, real, real potential but maybe lack confidence in, in taking on a different role , so really our solution to the question is to get them some of their own individual leadership coaching. Sometimes when I've worked with clinic owners, the clinic owner will, say things to their teams. And, you know, they'll say the same things that I would come in and say, and when I come in and say it, then suddenly the penny drops. So it's just kind of coming sometimes from an external voice can really be very powerful. And if you've got team members that you feel could really, you know, reach a higher potential, then give them that support and lift them blossom

Kate Markland: And that'll help give the team members opportunities to have a stronger voice and contribute to how the business evolves. Now, following on from that. Still related to team, we have another question that was related to what are the obvious risks that are in a practice. So somebody who has a single room of practice is just beginning to build their practice handbook, and they asked about what the risks were and wanted from us an opinion on what the potential risks were. They wanted to create, a catalog of potential risks and put policies in place to safeguard against them. Now, here in the UK, the CSP gives us great guidelines and standards that we need to meet, which makes sure if we do that, we cover most of the risks. One of the things that became really apparent to me though, was this isn't necessarily the case in all countries and people don't necessarily have this.

Kate Markland: And the person that asked this question is not based in the UK. So for a single room practice, yes, you can think about fires and all sorts of bloods and spillages, but one of the most obvious things for me was lone working. And that, that is a liability, especially if you've got single females working in your practice, in your premises, by themselves during the day or into the evening, you need to have in place some policy procedure so that they feel safe and the patients feel safe in their space too. It was an interesting question because it made me actually made me feel grateful for the CSP standards and policies and realise how meeting them ensures a lot of safeguarding.

Celia Champion: That's interesting. I was speaking to an Osteopath yesterday and they were kind of thinking about, whether they need their reception team going forward because they've all been on furlough for so long. They've put all these different processes and procedures in place where patients can book online. Patients can pay online. The osteopaths can rebook their patients in. So, a lot of the role of the reception team has become redundant. However, there will be an element of meet and greet, but the other big thing was that if the, if there was a single practitioner working on the own , in a standalone building actually to have

that receptionist there, the value of the receptionist is in that the team and clients are not in that lone working risky position. And so, that has actually led to their decision about what they'll do in the case of reception. They might not need all the hours that they had previously when there are several practitioners working, but on the occasions where there's only a sole practitioner, they will have some form of reception cover. so that, so that takes away that lone working risk.

Kate Markland: Wonderful. So hopefully we've answered those questions and come in this week, if you have any questions for next Thursday, then do let us know. As like I say on Thursdays, we will now be doing live Q&A for you. So take care, have a wonderful, wonderful weekends, and we will see you on Monday for some more marketing tips take care and have a great weekend. Bye bye for now .

Kate Markland: Hello, and welcome to the clinic owners business club lunchtime live on Wednesday 25th November with Celia Champion and myself, Kate Markland. Today, we're talking about the importance of planning for profit in your practice. And if you remember yesterday, we started to talk about the 1% gains and the little gains that you can get incrementally over time. And that follows on really nicely to planning for profit. Celia how have you seen those principles applied to clinics to help them improve their profitability over time?

Celia Champion: I think it's just kind of just recognizing marginal gains. So if you just try and get one more new patient a week, eventually that adds up a few. if you just look at one, one specific supplier, you know, one a month and, and review it, those kinds of changes can add up. So it's just all those little small incremental changes that you make that actually make a big impact. It's not necessarily saying, Oh, well now we're going to ditch a whole lot of suppliers and it's actually just reviewing everything very, very meticulously and just looking for those marginal gains , obviously you want to still keep quality but when you're changing those marginal things, your bottom line can definitely improve

Kate Markland: Wonderful Celia has mentioned that perfectly, that one of the things that we can look at immediately is suppliers and look at which supplier contracts we can either cut because we no longer need. Although the majority of people already have done that on the back of COVID, which sometimes can be just renegotiated because we need something different or perhaps it is time to swap telephone supply or broadband supply because you just never looked around before. With regard to revenue, looking at the revenue that each team member brings to the business because obviously team members have an impact on the health of your practice. And it's really important that as the owner, you understand what is, and then you can start looking at the what-if's, what are the things that that person needs to do to improve their performance or contribute differently to the team. And that might be some training, or it might be more financial understanding or awareness. It can be all sorts of different things.

Celia Champion: In terms of, in terms of pricing as well. W hen you're looking at putting your prices up, I know that practitioners agonize over it. but it isn't, it's necessary to do, you know, to make sure that you're actually keeping your business profitable. And even if you look, when you look at it and you'd say, well, I'm going to put it up a pound or two pounds. Let's say you treat 2000 treatments in a year when you put it up by one pound, it's making you an extra 2000 pounds in a year. And one pound is negligible. I would suggest looking at a bit of a higher increase, so, you know, five pounds, and then you suddenly looking and thinking, wow, if I'm doing five pound increase, that's going to make a 10,000 pounds, impact on my bottom line. I think we need to flag that it's not about you coming across as profiteering. It's about you making a healthy profit so that you can keep on treating patients. But you know, those small little gains, they all add up

Kate Markland: And many people and the many practice owners on the back of COVID are now in a position to starting to plan for 2021. And obviously hopefully for quite a different year from what 2020 has been. And once you've understood what you need your revenue to be, to meet all of your overheads, to meet all of your salary costs and to meet your personal revenue, you make sure that you're starting to build in a profit plan as well, so that your business is sustainable and can grow and can continue to contribute rather than the exact opposite, which is an awful lot of heartache and potentially going broke. So it's important that profitability is built into your business plan for the next year. And just, you can look at expenses, the amount of appointments you need to deliver the services that you're delivering and also the charging. And some of those things will need to change and will need to evolve. But just as we spoke about yesterday, there could be 1% gains. It can just be little things at a time.

Celia Champion: Perfect. The other thing that I think practitioners can really, be changing, it's not a big impact, but it can make a small marginal impact is that a lot of practitioners get very excited about products. So they'll go to a conference and they'll see the latest product. And, you know, so they see the latest, or this is a great role of a foam roller, for your patients or the Sparky balls

or the vitamins, or, you know, all those kinds of things. And you get all excited about them and you bring them into your practice because you really believe that they will add value to your patients, and then you don't sell them to your patients. So if you believe that every patient of yours or 80% of your patients would benefit from having a foam roller or benefit from a particular pillow or whatever it is that you sell, that you truly believe in, why are only 1% of your patients getting offered those things. So, you know, that can be a small marginal gain as well. And it would be far better having the products that you have in your clinic, in your client's homes, rather than in your store and covered just kind of gathering dust and not making you any money.

Kate Markland: Wonderful. So hopefully given you some hints and tips as you're planning for 2021 on the things that you can be thinking about to start making sure that your plan for next year ensures that your practice remains in gains in terms of profitability. So it's sustainable in the contribution it can make to your community. Tomorrow's Thursday and Thursday's is where we are always thankful. And we've been thinking about the positives that we deliver as clinicians to patients. And then also that, the value that we bring as a practice owners to our local communities as well, we're going to start answering any questions on the Thursdays to thank you for listening to us. So it's Live Q+A tomorrow. If you've got any questions, you'd like us to answer, then we will be answering them every single Thursday. Hope you've enjoyed the lives this week. And we will see you back at one o'clock tomorrow. Lunchtime, take care, have a brilliant day. Bye-bye

Celia Champion: Bye.

Kate Markland: Hello, and welcome to lunchtime life on Tuesday 24th of November with myself, Kate Markland and Celia C hampion today, we're talking about the marginal gains, all the little one percents and what they add to, to help build the whole picture. So, Celia, you mentioned a wonderful book which describes just this and how it's been applied in sports and how you can apply the same thing to business.

Celia Champion: Yeah, I read the book ages ago and actually it just came up in one of my success clubs last week. And, one of my clients had just read the book and she just said the penny just dropped for her. So she's been wanting to write a book for years and years and years, and it's always been like, it felt like such a big project. And when she reads the Atomic Habits by James Clear, https://jamesclear.com/atomic-habits and suddenly she realized that she just needs to be a writer and she needs to write every day.

Celia Champion: And so she's just broken it down into that. You know, she's just writing 1% more every single day. T he whole book is all about the story of the British cycling team and, since 1908, they were just not really performing at all. To the extent actually, there's one of the big European bike, suppliers wouldn't supply the British team. So Dave Brailsford took over and he just was looking at this kind of the aggregation of marginal gains. And like he looked at all the tiny little elements where you could just make, say the sad d1e 1% better, the gel that they used, 1% better, the pillows that the cyclists use to sleep 1% better. And even like painting the inside of the truck, so that they could see the painted white so that they could see any kind of speck of dust that could obviously, you know, with the fine tuning of bikes could just be there, that little edge and all those things after five years, in the Beijing Olympics that the British cyclists did exceptionally well.

Celia Champion: And again, and again, in the London Olympics, I think they took 60% of the medals and, so all those marginal gains that they worked over a period of time just added up, added up, added up and, and that's where I think a lot, a lot of the time you think that success means

that you have to do these big, great things, but actually it's just those marginal percentages that you can add into your daily, daily life. Just small little things that suddenly if you've done something. So like, another thing that comes to mind is the couch to 5k program. It's just that, you know, the first you start and you walk and you're running 30 seconds, and you're walking more than you're running. Then as you go through the weeks, you're running a bit more and a bit more and a bit more until after I think it's eight weeks, you're running five kilometers and it set marginal gain over that period of time.

Celia Champion: It's not suddenly, you've found some magic bullets that you can put on your running shoes and suddenly run five km's if you've never run it before, but actually just in a short period of eight weeks, you or a runner.

Kate Markland: Wonderful. And there's plenty of other examples for marginal gains have been shown to have huge, huge, and we can think about how we apply this with our patients as well. Quite often during rehabilitation patients might well get frustrated that they're not making progress rapidly as they would like to . You as the clinician can see the marginal gains and, you know, the value of that daily repetition, and again, and again and again, and then the penny drops for them and you know that's going to happen. And it's just applying that same knowledge that you have during a rehab program to your yourself and your business. I was just going to ask you to remind me what the book is called.

Celia Champion: It's called atomic habits by James Clear https://jamesclear.com/atomic-habits

It's a, it's a really brilliant book. And, you know, I think as you were saying that rehab of patients, it's just also reminding the patient of the margin gains that they're making, because sometimes I'm sure you'll have patients that will have had treatment and they come in and, and you'll ask them, how have they been since the last time you saw them . And they said, Oh, I'm still in pain. And, but actually when you start asking them, have you been able to put your jacket on or you'll say Oh, I see that you're able to take your jacket off on your own today. And you know, so it's reminding your patients with those marginal gains, what we want to our client group, is for you to be able to apply those practices that you apply in your clinical side of your business, to your non-clinical side of your business. So what marginal gains, you know, what things can you do in your business to see those marginal gains over time

Kate Markland: Wonderful. Thank you. So join us tomorrow lunch time, and tomorrow lunch time, we're going to be following on from this to be talking about planning for profit and what are the marginal gains that you can find there too. I'll pop a link to the book that Celia's discussed today, and we will see you tomorrow lunchtime to talk about planning for profits in your practice. Take care, have a great day. Bye bye for now.

Kate Markland: Hello and welcome to Lunchtime Live. On Monday, 23rd of November, with Celia Champion and myself, Kate Markland. Today, we are talking all about content and why as clinicians and clinic owners, it's important that we're creating content. Good afternoon. Celia. Did you have a good weekend

Celia Champion: We did indeed. Thank you very much. It was a bit cold and chilly, but it was really lovely and yeah, back to Monday, just go so quickly.

Kate Markland: Yes I did lots of walking in and I feel a lot better for that, but yes, it's pretty drizzly. So, today we are thinking about why is it important that we create content because obviously it's something you and I are doing with these lunchtime lives. Yeah.

Celia Champion: I mean, I think obviously we want to be able to get as much information out to our audience and just so our clients, physios, osteos, chiros, pods, know our philosophies as teachers. As clinic owners it's about how you can educate your patients and help them through your content. And I think, one of the main things is to actually put a plan in place because obviously you became a therapist because you want to be treating people and helping people, not really writing content. So as soon as you get busy, that's probably the first thing that goes. So having a kind of structure in place is really, really important that you just get into a bit of a flow of being able to just do that on a regular basis. So there's not kind of like feast and faminine

Kate Markland: So content allows clients to get to know like, and trust you and as a clinician and your team as well. And it doesn't just have to be you as a clinic owner, that's creating content. It's something that you can involve your whole team in. And, and just to Celia says, perhaps having a calendar so that each person just has to create one piece of content a month, which really, as clinicians, quite often, we find writing quite difficult. Now I certainly do, but we can do things like using video and then get them transcribed too, and that can be written as a blog. So content allows clients to sample your expertise before they pick up the phone to you. And if you have a plan like Celia is saying it helps keep you to account and make it all a lot more manageable.

Celia Champion: It's really interesting. Because I find whenever I speak to clients about, doing stuff on social media or writing newsletters, there's usually a kind of, Oh, how am I ever going to come up with content for 12 newsletters in a year Or how am I going to come up with content for three posts a week , and actually when you start just kind of listing all the different things that you could be doing with your content, it's so easy. I mean, you know, and if you, you know, once you've kind of exhausted what you thinking in your head about, you know, you could do top tips on various different things, actually just go on to https://www.awarenessdays.com/ . And there is an awareness day for absolutely everything. There's an awareness day, every single day there are awareness weeks. There's so many ideas over there that you can align yourself.

Kate Markland: And there's another brilliant website called https://answerthepublic.com/ . And you can just type in back pain, neck pain, and it comes up with all the questions that people type into Google about their aches and pains. And then

you can just simply answer every single one of them. There's a lot of questions that come up. You can simply start working through answering the questions that people are typing into Google about how you can help , and answering those will also help with your search engine optimization too.

Celia Champion: I was just gonna say as well that the content doesn't all have to be, medical and about physiotherapy or about, podiatry or, you know, whatever your profession is, make it about you guys as well. So, you know, bring the personality of your team into your social media, into newsletters, people buy people. So, you know, they want to get to know you as well when you don't have to share your deepest, darkest secrets, but, you know, just be a little bit human

Kate Markland: As well. Wonderful. So thank you very much. H opefully we've given you some great tips why it's important that we're creating content so that potential clients and existing clients get to know like, and trust you and sample your expertise before they pick up the telephone. And we've given you some ideas of how to create a strategy or content calendar to help hold you to account. We'll see you tomorrow for Tuesday's training. So we'll see you tomorrow, lunchtime, and then we're here again on Wednesday or Thursday this week have a wonderful day guys. And hopefully you don't get too wet if you're going out for a run.

Celia Champion: Yeah. Have a great Monday.

Kate Markland: Good afternoon and welcome to Wednesday, 18th of November. Today we are talking about discovering the hidden profits in your healthcare business. Our theme on Wednesday is all about wealth, wealth creation in your clinic. So where are the hidden profits? So many clinicians and clinic owners run at breakeven or making a loss , or even just a very small profit and they might well not be playing themselves. Maybe even not as much as they could have been if they stayed in the public health sector and it is not okay, obviously. And it's also not sustainable. So today we want to be thinking about every Wednesday, how are you going to find more profit within your clinic so that you can reward yourself and reinvest. so today we are going where the obvious places to go find the hidden profits.

Celia Champion: Well, I think one of the key areas, as you know, in order to kind of make more money, is to put your prices up. A lot of clinic owners do not review their prices for awfully long time. And then when they do, they agonize over whether they're going to put them up or not, have a look at the different revenue streams of your business as well. So, are you heavily reliant on insurance? Are you getting paid enough for those insurance patients? How long are those insurance patients taking you compared to private patients? So stop look and seeing where you should be focusing more on. Self payers and then very obvious other place to look. Then it is just be very aware of all your expenses and, don't just be the person to renew your contracts year in, year out. Such as your telephones or your utilities, look around at your insurances, have a look around and see that you're all getting, the most competitive price for the service that you get. And I'm not saying that you should get the cheapest, because you still want to get the right service. So it is just making sure that you are getting the most competitive price for the type of service that you're offering.

Kate Markland: I think one of the most effective ways to help cut costs is to share them, to list all of your expenses and share them with somebody else, because that helps you become really accountable and to explain why the expense is or isn't needed then you can reduce your expenses. But I think sharing expenses will help you challenge yourself and help them challenge you. So really do need that subscription or not that you just haven't renewed, just have a look around for bit.

Celia Champion: And I think the other thing to consider is looking at, your contacts with your team members. So, you know, I think a lot of clinics, the kind of standard model in the past has always been, associate model and some, some of the contracts are extortionately high in the favour of the associate, and it just does not make business sense to be paying an associate 60, 70% of the revenue because, you know, you've still got to sustain your business. You've got to make the business profitable so that you can continue operating. And, sometimes an employed model is a better, more cost effective model. And it certainly is worth looking into that as well. I've had a few clients that have changed over, and haven't looked back.

Kate Markland: The other thing that Celia brought up is looking at your income and your sources of revenue and having, a review of those. So looking at what your pricing structure is, and whether it can be addressed, adjusting your price for existing clients, but also reviewing the price and structure that you have for insurance companies and to have courage to stop. It is really worthwhile taking time to understand what your profitability is on each appointment, because then you can start to see which insurance companies are probably actually costing you to deliver the care to, and then will not have an issue. If you realize it's costing you to deliver some of those insurance appointments write to that insurance company within new pricing structure. And you can very firmly tell them as of the 1st of January, these are the prices . You take two charge. If you want my clinics still deliver with services, this is the prices or not,

Celia Champion: Another probably indirect place where your profits might lie is how you are running your time. So if you're kind of thinking I'm going to save money by doing the cleaning, by doing the bookkeeping,

by doing every single job in the set under the sun in your clinic, actually what you're doing is you're detracting away from you being able to build your practice and get more patients through the door and, you know, build a much more sustainable business because you're spending your time. Cleaning for example you could get a cleaner for, I don't know, 15, 20 pounds an hour. You could get a bookkeeper for 20, 25 pounds an hour. And even if you just looked at that in terms of, if you could treat patients, instead of doing that, let's say if you're charging 50 pounds a session for your, treatment, you'd be earning a hundred pounds an hour compared to, using five hours to do your bookkeeping. So whilst you might think I'm not saving money actually in the long-term you are. So you need to also make short-term decisions for long-term benefits.

Kate Markland: Wonderful. So if your looking at your pricing and have confidence to put your pricing structure where it should go, and have the confidence to understand the profitability on your insurance companies, on the contracts with them. And negotiate the same with your expenses, reviewing all their expenses and seeing what you can cut because it's unnecessary. Which of the contracts can you renegotiate or restructure and that's not just with expenses like the telephone but also with your team. And then finally having to look at where you're spending time, doing tasks that are low paid tasks. Somebody is far, far better off doing then you

, so you can be doing higher revenue activities. I hope that's given you some tips and help to find new profits in your clinic. Tomorrow is continuing on the thankful thursday theme. And we're looking at all the things that we can be grateful for. So take care. I hope you enjoyed that and we'll see you tomorrow. Bye bye for now.

Celia Champion: See you tomorrow. Bye.

Kate Markland: Hello, and welcome to Thursday 19th of November, on this gorgeous sunny autumn day the sun and the trees are looking absolutely wonderful. I hope it's bright blue skies wherever you a

Celia Champion: And after 14 days of isolation, I can't wait to go from my run after this call.

Kate Markland: So, today we are talking about the importance of valuing yourself and that's absolutely perfect that Celia kicked off with the fact that she spends time today to prioritize the importance of going for a run. So as clinicians as we can spend so much time caring for everybody else, caring for our clients, our team, our friends, our families, we often neglect ourselves. And that can cause problem, because if we don't prioritize our own self care and valuing ourselves, we don't have anything left to contribute. Celia, what are your thoughts and tactics for clinic owners on figuring out how to look after themselves.

Celia Champion: First of all, why is it important clinicians value themselves. Well, I think, I mean, I don't really like using this analogy, but I'm going to , you know, when you're on an airplane and they say, if something happens, oxygen masks drop down and you've got to put the oxygen mask on yourself first, before you help your fellow passengers. And I think that, so it's a cliche, but it is so true because if you don't look after yourself, you're not going to be in a position to look after your patients. And, and also it's kind of being a little bit hypocritical in a way because you're just not walking your talk, if you're suggesting to your patients that they get better sleep or they have a better diet or they move better, and you're not doing that yourself.

Celia Champion: I had an example of, plants. So it's not in terms of the, well, it is actually in terms of health, very much in terms of looking after yourself. So working with an osteopathic clinic and they were talking about how they, they find that their patients benefit from a certain regularity of treatment. And we're not asked that group of osteopaths, how often they have treatment. They say, Oh, we never have time for it. And that's a cycle. How do you get to recommend to your patients that they should have a certain regularity of treatment yet you don't prioritize it for yourself so, yeah, I'm a very, passionate listener to a podcast. And he talks about, moving better, sleeping better, resting better, eating better. It's just those four pillars that you'd really do need to take into consideration.

Celia Champion: And it's, it's some, sometimes it's such obvious stuff, and those are the things that kind of slipped by the wayside. And you think, Oh, I'll just extend my clinical hours. And I mean, I've got one guy at the moment, he's not getting home before 11 o'clock at night because he's short-staffed so he's just packing in the patients, but he recognizes that it's, it's going to implode one day. And so you've really got to take care of yourself so that you can take care of others.

Kate Markland: If you think about a sport. So, anything where you're handling a fast car, or if you're not on it, you're really putting yourself at danger and others are danger as well. And you will start making stupid mistakes when you're tired, you'll make stupid mistakes. If you were going to ride a motorbike or go in a fast car or do some sky diving, whatever you were going to do, where there's high risk if you're on it, you risk your life and you risk the lives of others. Running a business, running a healthcare practice, I think it pays well to remember those principles. If you're not well-rested then what happens at the end of the day, you start making stupid mistakes and things go crash and bang, and that is not sustainable and not okay. We so often listen to what, goes on in our client's lives and give advice on rest, exercise and work-life habits. But its completely hypocritical if we are not applying the same principles to ourselves. So it's really important that we do value ourselves and take care of ourselves so that we have the resources and the energy to continue to contribute to our clients, to our team and to the health of our business and see it as Celia highlighted.

Kate Markland: Can you just list those four things again, that you mentioned that were critical?

Celia Champion: Eating better, sleeping, better, resting better and moving better. And, I think it's just so easy to neglect ourselves. I could easily not run today because I've got a huge to do list at the moment, like loads of stuff to get done for our five day challenge coming up. And I could so easily think, Oh no, let me just crack on and listen to another section of the class that I'm doing about doing five day challenges. And, you know, I've got other things that I need to get done and I could so easy to just think, Oh no, I'm not going to go from a run now. Let me just crack on, and then I know what will happen.....

Celia Champion: I'll have another app and another call this afternoon. It's going to be dark and I'm really not going to want to go and run. So, I've just got to actually be strict and say, right, just take this off an hour. And I also know that when I get back from their half an hour run, I will be so much more productive because it just gives you that energy and then you can really crack on. So I think we all, we all know that it's really good for us to do those things. And then we kind of put things off, put things off, and actually I know that I'll be more productive and I'll get more things done after I've now taken a break because I've been on calls the whole morning. I know that running is going to make me super powerful in the afternoon.

Kate Markland: Wonderful. Well, we're going to let Celia head off and go and enjoy her run. We will see you again, Monday lunchtime, the theme of mondays is marketing and we're going to talk about communication and why it's really important.

So we look forward to seeing you tomorrow , Celia off you go and enjoy that run.

Kate Markland: Bye bye for now.

Kate Markland: Good afternoon and welcome to your lunchtime live team huddle with myself, Kate Markland and Celia Champion. Hope you're enjoying these five minute chats to help give you some helpful hints and tips to improve the running of your practice and keep you sane during the second lockdown as well. So today is Tuesday and Tuesday means that we're going to do a mini training and the theme this week is on leadership. Something that's absolutely critical for all of us to get to through the uncertainty that we're seeing in the world at the moment. So we thought today we'd focus particularly on communication with our teams within one-to-one and how critical that is to the performance and unity of a small community, which is your team. So Celia, this topic was inspired by you. What do you believe is critical, with regards to the components of team meetings and team one-to-one

Celia Champion: So, I mean, firstly, I think one's going to recognize that often a clinic owner is not in practice at the same time as their team and their associates. So often the kind of set it up is maybe the clinic owner will work alongside some of their team members, but they might not work on the same shift patterns as everybody. So I think firstly, it's really, really important to schedule those regular one to ones and try and make sure that you schedule them and don't push them out and push them out when you kind of think, Oh, I've got to just have another patient in a fit another patient in because your communication with your team is absolutely key. And you know what we don't want is you bringing people on board and being ships in the night and you never talking to each other and then kind of three to six months down the line, either your employee or your associate feels disgruntled and doesn't feel loved and looked after and they go and find somewhere else, or you're not happy with their performance, but actually the only reason you're not happy with your performance is , well, there are four different reasons why it could be.... .

  1. They don't know what's expected of them. So you haven't sat down and really been clear about what the expectations are.

  2. They don't know that they're not meeting expectations. So you might have set out the expectations, but you haven't actually said to them, look, you're not actually hitting the mark. Your capacity is only at 50%

and we really want it to be at 75%, but you have never told them that. And they don't really know.

  1. Is they can't meet expectations. So you need to then identify that , what training your team members need to be able to meet those expectations.

And 4. Is unfortunately there will be some of these instances where they just won't meet expectations. And at that point, when you know that they're not going to meet your expectations, they're not going to, align to your values and how you want the patient journey and team experience to be, you need to invite them to go and express their talents elsewhere, but you need to be having those meetings and the communications for each of those stages. So setting expectations, making, letting them know that they're meeting them or they're not helping them with the training or finding someone that is better suited for your organization.

Kate Markland: And that can also be resolved with really good recruitment in the beginning. So you've been really clear about what it is that you're looking for when you are interviewing and allowing the candidate to interview you. And then also having a thorough rigorous process in induction process is probably going to last between three and six months. It's going to take time for you to really learn, to operate together as a team. And I think one of the things that's critical to enable the consistency has to be just putting a team meeting in the diary. So whether that's five minutes every single day, or whether that's half an hour once a week, it doesn't, well, it does

matter. But the most important thing I think is to begin with just getting some consistency and some rhythm so that everybody knows when they're going to see you and when they're going to have a chance to communicate and ask any questions and then setting up those one-to-ones, which in the beginning, I believe very much should be once a week. So people have chance to ask the questions over time. They might shift to fortnightly, monthly or quarterly. You've got to make time for your team just in the same way that you make time for your clients. And the more you can get things in a rhythm , the smoother they are and the less confusion there is, and the more certainty and consistency you're able to provide everybody.

Celia Champion: And, just thinking and what you're saying about, you know , and the actual recruitment process. One of our sayings is hire slow and fire fast. So, you know, take your time to make sure that you get the right person and hire for attitude and train for skills. So, you know, it's really, really important. And I know that it's difficult in, in this climate to find, say, physios and osteos, and I know it's hard, but it's, it is much better to try and wait it out and get the right person on board. Than take someone on that doesn't really have the right attitude because a few months down the line, you're going to be kicking yourself.

Kate Markland: Yeah. Just causing lots of headaches. Any questions about this, or would like any help with further hints and tips with regard to leadership and implementing team meetings and one-to-one's we ware very happy to answer for you. Tomorrow is Wednesday and tomorrow we talk all about wealth creation and I believe we set tomorrow's topic being about getting your pricing . So take care and we'll see you the same time tomorrow. Bye bye for now.

Kate Markland (00:02):

Hi, good afternoon and welcome to the very new, exciting path partnership between myself, Kate Markland and Celia Champion. Many of you will know one or other of us already, but perhaps not both of us.

Celia, is an expert healthcare business mentor, and she certainly helped me as a clinician and clinic owner over the years and helps many, many other clinic owners get their business in order so that they can achieve the goals that they would desire with the clinic, supporting them meet their professional and personal needs.

Iโ€™m Kate Markland a Physiotherapist and former Clinic Owner and together weโ€™ve formed a partner to help you get through the turmoil of the coming months and provide you some certainty and stability so that you can continue to look after yourself and your family, your clinic, team, and your clients, because as we all know, health and healthcare provision right now has never been more critical.

So weโ€™re going to be helping through the next few months, but first of all, weโ€™d like to take a few moments to talk to you a little bit today about how you can prioritize looking after yourself and your health and why that matters so much.

Celia, I know youโ€™ve done some workshops this week and youโ€™ve really picked up on the theme of how important it is for clinicians and clinic owners to be taking care of themselves right now.

Celia Champion (01:34):

Yeah. I was just speaking yesterday to a clinic owner. Whoโ€™s really kind of gone through a lot too while thinking about just having to treat a lot of patients. Sheโ€™s been a bit short staffed at the moment. And so sheโ€™s been kind of packing patients in every slot and space that she can, that she can do it. And sheโ€™s made the decision, a difficult decision to actually shut the clinic for a little while, with the second lockdown so that she can just take care of herself so that she can come back stronger and build a better business. And, you know, I know that itโ€™s taken a lot of strengths and bravery for her to do that and, and tough decisions because at the end of the day, you know, clinicians really just want to help every single patient. But I think clinicians really need to recognize that they need to put the oxygen mask on themselves first because youโ€™re gonna end up helping even less people if you burn out. So itโ€™s really important to put boundaries in place, make sure that youโ€™re looking after yourself, even if you are working long hours. And youโ€™re used to just make sure that youโ€™re putting something in place to help yourself get through these difficult times.

Kate Markland (02:43):

And itโ€™s really taking a little bit of time to talk to yourself, your friends, your family find what specific things are that you know you need, or that they observe that you need to keep yourself well, I know that for myself, every time I get a bit headless, put my trainers on and go for a swim and a different person comes back.

A clinic owner I was speaking to this morning knows that walking is critical to her very specifically with a friends. So she was quite relieved to recognize that that ability to still go for a walk with a friend, is there so itโ€™s prioritizing having five, 10 minutes, half an hour to think about what you need in place so that you can keep meeting the needs of your family and your community.

Because I think as clinicians, weโ€™ve also been talking about how often itโ€™s not just the clients and the team we look after. We were also quite often linchpins in terms of looking at our families.

Celia Champion (03:41):

Mm. Yeah. And I think itโ€™s, itโ€™s often, itโ€™s very tempting when you kind of, when youโ€™re under pressure that say, if exercise is a Keystone habit that really keeps you focused in together and energized. And itโ€™s very easy to let those things go first because you think I donโ€™t have time to go for a run and I donโ€™t have time to go for a walk. Iโ€™ll just crack on with my emails. And actually if you stop, go for a walk, clear your head or go for a run or go for a swim, whatever, you know, whatever, really, whatever you find is the most useful thing to do. Meditate, do a bit of yoga, whatever it is, if you stop and do that, and then you go back to doing whatever work youโ€™re doing, youโ€™ll actually achieve things in a much quicker. Youโ€™ll be more efficient because youโ€™ve given yourself that time to just take a break rest and come back at us free, come back at it with fresh eyes.

Kate Markland (04:33):

Okay. Thank you. And obviously weโ€™re all living through so much uncertainty and, and predictability at the moment. I think itโ€™s also really valuable to recognize that we are skilled in dealing with uncertainty and unpredictability, because this is what we do for our clients. Our clients come in scared and uncertain all the time. So we probably are more equipped than we recognize if we look after ourselves to handle uncertainty, because we do it all the time as clinicians. And if we can just remember those clinical skills that we apply to clients when theyโ€™re in pain and theyโ€™re scared and theyโ€™re uncertain and apply those to ourselves and our businesses, weโ€™re going to be a much safer ground, or I believe weโ€™re going to be much safer ground.

Celia Champion (05:17):

Yeah, definitely. I think, I think thereโ€™s thereโ€™s so many examples of where we can actually just get our clients, our clinicians, to look at the way they treat patients and apply that to themselves, to their business. You know, itโ€™s just like thinking about if you had a patient in front of you who was stressed out and working more hours than they should. What advice would you give that patient? Itโ€™s time to take your own medicine?

Kate Markland (05:44):

Oh, wonderful, wonderful stuff to do. Weโ€™re going to be lunchtime team huddle Monday to Thursday, most, working days. Celia and I are going to be doing five to 10 minute live team huddle to help you as clinicians and clinical owners have some certainty and some grounding, and certainty and answer any questions over the coming weeks, we want to help you get through the next few months with as much ease as is possible. So every single Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, where possible Celia and I will be live at lunchtime for five, 10 minutes, giving our thoughts and whatever, how we can respond to the news and whatโ€™s happening and helping provide you with stability and certainty. Of course, weโ€™re open to answering any questions that you might have too, about your clinic, your team clients, whatever it is you need to ask. Weโ€™re here to help. Then on the seventh of December, we have something very exciting.

Celia Champion (06:41):

We are very, very, very excited to be doing our first five day challenge together. And our five day enters there to really support you look at your clinic kind of review where youโ€™re at, think about where youโ€™re wanting to get to, and really just helping you have a successful clinic and, you know, just get through this period of time without making very kind of rash, short term decisions we want, we want to help you thinking about your clinic in the long-term as well. So, and weโ€™d love you to join us in our new five day challenge, which will start on the 7th of December. And weโ€™ll tell you more about that in the coming weeks.

Kate Markland (07:22):

And then weโ€™ve already started planning 2021 as Iโ€™m sure some of you have been thinking about desperate to see the back of 2020, and weโ€™ve designed, as you might be able to see from the logo, healthcare professional business club. But can you share a little bit more about that Celia?

Celia Champion (07:39):

Yeah, so weโ€™d love to, you know, we, weโ€™ve been speaking for months and months and months and months now, in fact, weโ€™ve been speaking probably four years now, actually, if, I think back to the time that we met, to have a cup of coffee and chat about working together and weโ€™ve just been doing a lot of work in considering what we think would be the most, you know, most beneficial for our clients. And so weโ€™re going to have a business owners kind of a club business club we, will be able to share more about that as we develop it further. But what would essentially, weโ€™ll be as a smallish group of practitioners that come together weโ€™ll be delivering some kind of training modules. Weโ€™ll be doing some one-to-one coaching, weโ€™ll have the community. Itโ€™ll just be a kind of one-stop shop to come and get your business littered and get yourself being a confident business owner as well as a competent practitioner.

Kate Markland (08:37):

Wonderful. Thank you very much. So thank you for taking the time to watch us and join us today.

First thing is lunchtime Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursdays. Most of those days see you and I will be live giving you a team huddle to help support you over the coming weeks.

7Th of December, weโ€™ll be launching the day challenge.

And at the very beginning of January, weโ€™ll be launching the healthcare professionals business club. So look out for all of those in the meantime, have a wonderful weekend, get some rest, prioritize what you need to look after you. And we shall see you on Monday for the first team huddle, take care, and weโ€™ll see you next week.

Bye bye.

See you next week.

Kate Markland: Good afternoon and welcome to your first Clinic Owners Lunchtime Live with Kate Markland and Celia Champion . Good afternoon, Celia.

Celia Champion: Hi, how are you, Kate

Kate Markland: Thank you. I'm good. I'm good. Bearing up this, this second lock down. Although I think Wales have just been allowed the freedoms back again today.

Celia Champion: Yeah, well, I had, we've we have a COVID, positive child in our house right now. So we are all in isolation and I had a call from the NHS and I thought it was quite amusing the way he said, well, you know, working out the dates that we had to be in isolation and he said, so your last day in isolation is the 17th, you will have your freedom day on the 18th , I suppose, freedom as in, I can go out into the forest again, which will be fantastic, but we're still in lockdown.

Kate Markland: Oh, well hopefully, many of the clinicians listening are still being able to work because this lock down unlike previous, we're still able to keep practicing. So the purpose of these lunchtime lives, little team huddles are to help inspire you

and support you as the clinic owners get through this so that you can continue helping your clients.

Kate Markland: It's Monday and Monday's is going to be marketing. So today we thought we would talk about the importance of communication, because I'm sure on the radio, press on the internet and social media. Link us you've I've been bombarded by

just chaos and noise, especially with the Trump and the US elections going on. We have just been absolutely bombarded and it's same is true for your clients. They are being filled with information, chaos left, right and center.

Celia Champion: So as a clinician and the clinic owner, we feel it's really important that you keep your communication clear and simple and crisp for your clients. So they know exactly what they can expect from you with certainty. And I think, that the fact that you are able to practice second time round and, and also knowing h ow your clients reacted when they weren't able to come to you , you know some of their health went downhill, because they couldn't come and have, face to face treatment with you. So now it's really, really important to let patients know that you are still open for business, that they can come to you, for face-to-face treatment and hands-on treatment. Just really assuring them again about the safety precautions that you're putting in place to keep them safe and to keep yourself and your team safe, you know, reach out let patients know that you are there, that you are open and that you are practicing as safely .

Kate Markland: I thought it was really nice this morning. Celia and I both have had injured shoulders recently over the last few months. I've been seeing a physios and I had a message from Chris this morning, checking in on how I am whether we needed to progress . And I was so glad

of that the reminder. I have been doing my exercises and yes, in theory, I should know what to do myself, but I still need somebody when injured as I go back into patient mode. And I was so glad that the message from Chris this morning, checking in with me, I asked him when we're going to have our next appointment so we can progress my shoulder on. Just like your clients we have all been busy with judging schools, family, and everything else during this COVID chaos, if we're as clinicians just to give that simple message, how are you? We're still open for business. Anything I can do to help? It's reassuring and certain amid the chaos.

Celia Champion: I also think, if you've got patients that can't come to see you, how else can you help those patients? You know, I think you can give a tremendous, a lot of advice. I know, you know, obviously you're a fan of hands-on treatment. But I have also had great advice when I haven't been able to go in to see my Physio. So, you know, think about those patients that you could actually still be reaching out to and helping with some simple kind of pointers, or even sometimes just reminders. You know, sometimes patients

just don't know what they don't know. And so even if you think it's fairly obvious, you know, maybe, maybe just kind of communicate about stretchers or, you know, self- care that your patients can be doing for themselves doing and whilst locked down, especially if they're not able to come to your clinic and the tools you can use to do this really simple.

Kate Markland: I mean, obviously email newsletters can go out and your doing social media posts or

sending texts or WhatsApp messages. And you can do those in bulk . I don't know that I've got bulk message from Chris, but you can send them out bulk texts, using text local and things like that. But the power of the telephone never fails to, surprise me in terms of the value of just picking up the phone and calling clients that, you know, need to check in, and keeping it so simple, just picking up the phone, calling people, asking how are you, is there anything you can do to help is the simplest form of communication. So, so powerful.

Celia Champion: Yeah. And you know, I think that the patient retention is really, really important. So, you know, making sure that you are keeping in touch with those patients that you believe need to come to you. either if they're in a course of care at the moment, that's really important. I f they cancel their appointment get in touch with them and found out why they cancelled the appointment.

Celia Champion: You might also have patients that benefit from, maintenance care. So, you know, if you know that the patients would really benefit coming in once a quarter or every six months or once a year or whatever, you kind of, whatever you believe is in the most best clinical interest for your patients, get in touch with them to remind them about those appointments that they should be attending.

Kate Markland: Perfect, remember its just simple, crisp communication with your clients to help give them certainty during these uncertain times. And hopefully we've given you a range of reasons why and some important and strategies that we can use. So we're going to see you Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursdays at one o'clock, we'll be slightly earlier tomorrow whilst we get this sorted in our diaries. And if you've got any questions, you'd like to ask that to do that take care, and we will see you tomorrow. Lunch time. Have a great afternoon. Bye bye for now.

Kate Markland: Good afternoon and welcome to lunchtime on Tuesday, 10th of November a little bit earlier today, just to squeeze it in with mine and Celia's diaries, we hope you're enjoying these lunchtime lives . So today, is Tuesday, as a theme on a Tuesday, we're going to do a mini training for you. And today we thought we would share with you our thoughts on leadership and perhaps some inspiration to help you understand how there is actually an opportunity to right now and be thinking about involving your teams and your clients in all the services that you're offering.

Celia Champion: I think as clinic owners now it's been, really tricky to manage teams because a lot of your teams might have been on furlough. They might be at home and

I've seen kind of some clinicians almost just step back from it completely. T hen others have actually involved their teams in zoom meetings. And, what we've seen is where, leaders are more open to listening to their team that you never know where the good ideas come from. I remember long time ago in my business in South Africa, we had a strategic weekend away. And I invited everybody in our whole team to come. I decided to invite absolutely everybody. And one of the best, most transformational idea came from one of our, technicians who, who was kind of at the lowest level, he was at the point where he would be putting the cables and he was learning on the job. And actually he came up with a fantastic idea that just transformed our business. So I just think, you know, be open to listening. God gave you two years and one mouth use them in proportion.

Kate Markland: The other thing to recognize is the leader follower model is an industrial model which worked in factories . We're a more educated population, with more cognitive solutions, opening the floor to the entire team and to our clients, to listening to their ideas and inspirations and the creativity they have could find

some fabulous, new ways of working.

Celia Champion: I think there is still the responsibility of the owner of the clinic and the leader of the clinic to take responsibility and accountability, and also make business decisions. So sometimes people will have so many ideas that it's difficult for the clinic owner to implement things, but I think it is just as important to show that you are listening. And listening out for those golden golden nugget opportunities that you might not have thought about on your own, but then taking the responsibility to implement the ideas that are in line with your purpose and your values and the vision of your business, prioritizing them. I was with speaking

to a client earlier today and she's full of ideas and, she's sees opportunities here, there, and everywhere, but the problem is, is that she's got so many going on that we need to kind of say, okay, come on. Let's really look at each of these opportunities. Is it an opportunity or is it a distraction? And then start prioritizing what actually fits in with her long-term planning. And make sure we are making decisions for the long-term not a knee-jerk short term decision.

Kate Markland: Which is where we're keeping inline with our purpose and making sure that we're creating a team of leaders. And actually I think that very much includes our clients as well, that we're really listening to what the opportunities are and then prioritizing what we're going to implement and how we're going to implement it with everybody being accountable for that . So we're creating a leader-leader model rather than a leader- follower model.

Celia Champion: I think the other thing that I was chatting to with my client earlier, which comes into this regarding, which kind of model you take on. .

So she's at the moment, got some of her, therapists on zero hours and there's just, no, buy-in, they're just not aligned with the overall purpose of the business. And so we are looking at employment models going forward, and, and bringing people on board that aren't just coming on as clinicians, but they want to be involved in, in the journey of, of the business.

Kate Markland: The parts of team ownership is about the experience that's being created for the clients and for them as the team as well. So that's our top tip for Tuesday. We're going to try and keep these Tuesdays a cup of coffee length about five minutes. So I hope you to that and got some inspiration on the difference between a leader - follower model and a leader- leader model and which, or the balance between those that might be right for you. Celia and I are working on some book reviews at the moment that cover some of these topics and we'll be out fingers crossed what happens finished soon, very shortly. H ave a great day and we will see you tomorrow. Wednesday is all about money. Wealth on Wednesday. So take care and we'll see you tomorrow. Lunch time.

Bye bye for now.

Celia Champion: Bye

Kate Markland: Good afternoon. Welcome to Wednesday 11th of November. We're going to be talking about wealth on Wednesdays and making sure that you're creating wealth within your healthcare business to keep your confidence and interest in the business that you're creating. If you aren't profitable, then you'll start to get really disillusioned and lack the confidence to be able to contribute and give your maximum contribution to your community and team. So today we are talking about why it's important we focus on the wealth creation within your health care business. So Celia, you chose today's topic on knowing the numbers. Why did you particularly want to bring that up today

Celia Champion: I think that, the numbers is the one thing that a lot of practitioners attempt to avoid. And, often I can, I'll go into a practice and, you know, we start talking about the numbers and they're very quick to tell me how many patients come through the door. So how much turnover they make. But a lot of, a lot of the time, there's not really any understanding about what the bottom line profit is after they've paid all their associates and expenses and so forth and stuff with them. And sometimes they just don't know the numbers at all. And, I kind of feel like they're not making enough, but are too fearful of looking at the numbers. And sometimes accountants speak is daunting. So, you know, I feel really passionate about making the numbers as simple as possible, and it's better to know what the numbers are. Then wake up at three o'clock in the morning and wonder what the numbers are. Even if, even if the numbers are worse than you think they are rather know that and be able to put something in place, to make a plan, to turn them around.

Kate Markland: So many clinicians and clinic owners do exactly the same as I did in that we we're passionate about our profession and we're passionate about the contribution that we make to clients' lives. And we want to, increase that impact. So we up clinics or our healthcare business as a labor of love, really, we're not really at the start motivated financially. What we're motivated by is helping people get better and using our professional skills to do that. But if we don't progress from being a technician to being a business owner, and don't start looking at the numbers, we can find that our passion or hobby actually starts to drain us. And as you say, wake us up at three o'clock in the morning with worry, because we don't know what those numbers are and what, what they, what they mean and what the impact of them is.

Celia Champion: Yeah. And there's also a real, I mean, I can't tell you how many conversations I've had with practitioners who, you know, phone me up and say, you know, we're thinking of putting our prices up. What do you think And then they'll say, well, we're going to put it up by one pound or two pounds, and then they deliberate and they deliberate and they worry about what's going to happen and

worry about, you know, being seen as kind of money grabbing rather than actually looking after their business. Because sometimes you do need to put your prices up. So now with all that extra PPE expense, with the fact that you've got to have more time, more time in between appointments, it has to be a real consideration. It does need to be considered, do we need to put our prices up so that we can sustain our business so that we can continue helping the people.

Kate Markland: Absolutely. And I think one of the things that we so often forget as clinicians is the value that we add to people's lives. I've had a couple of calls this week with podiatrists and foot health practitioners. And as a Physiotherapist, they have skills I don't have, so I can see their skills and I can see the impact that they bring to other people's lives. And know the reasons why I've referred to them. But to me, they're undervaluing themselves and being incredibly humble about their skillset because they don't see that treating the fungal nail is anything very exciting or special. Whereas I know that if you've got a fungal nail as a patient, this is a major deal and aa a physio there's nothing I can do about it. So, I think it's really important that we at the value we bring to client's lives and start to understand the value of the impact that we make on their lives and not feel guilty about charging for the right price or feel guilty about the fact that we've got a spreadsheet that shows us the numbers of our business.

Celia Champion: I ran a patient management and communication workshop yesterday, and I had a physio in there and she's, she was in the NHS for many years and is now a private practitioner. And she really struggles with charging her patients and really struggles having those conversations and really struggles, not kind of feel the patients should be able to get it for free. And, you know, I kind of say to her, well, you know, the patient's chosen to come to you privately because they

get a service quicker. They don't have to wait for the service. They get more attention from you, you know, you can you offering them something different. And I'm not saying that that, that it's better or worst or whatever it is, a different service.

Celia Champion: And the patient has chosen to come to you and they've chosen to come private. So they have chosen to make an investment. So the worst thing you can do is kind of means test the patient and then kind of think, Oh, I'm not so sure that this patient will afford it, or it's so expensive s o I'll just offer them half of what they really need. You know, that's wasting their money. So, you know, when patients come to you privately, you've got to give them your best clinical recommendation and your patient will work out the finances, your job is being the expert physio in the room and your patient can manage their finances. You're, you're not a financial manager, you're a physio a podiatrist or therapist.

Kate Markland: Now next week, we'll start being able to tell you a little bit more about the five day challenge that we're going to be running to help you as a clinic owner, get your business organized and ready for 21. In the meantime, what would be a brilliant exercise is to just make a list of all of your expenses in some way, and have a real good look at your pricing and what your revenue is so that you can start to understand not just what your expenses are but what your income is as well. And there'll be some very obvious things that stick out to

you. So just make a list of all of your expenses and then have a look at your pricing, your appointments, because parts of it will be non-sensical and some you'll see straight away . You can either do this on a weekly, monthly, or quarterly basis, what this easiest for you. And that will help you prepare for the five day challenge that' s coming up early December. Great. We'll see you tomorrow. Tomorrow we're going to be thinking about the importance of gratitude and appreciating what we've got which is particularly relevant to during this time. So take care of, and we'll see you tomorrow.

Celia Champion: Bye.

Kate Markland: Good afternoon and welcome to Thursday, 12th of November. I hope you've had a great week and enjoyed the first week of Celia and I doing these lunchtime lives to help you as a clinic owner, just to receive some hints and tips every single lunchtime, and we're trying to keep them nice and short and sweet. So you should be able to listen to us over at a quick cup of tea or coffee. So today is Thursday and Thursday's theme is always going to be about gratitude. It was Celia's inspiration. So I'm going to let Celia kick off with what our first thankful Thursday over you Celia.

Celia Champion: Thank you. Well, I think, we need to be thankful about, what we have in our life right now, and sometimes it can be difficult when you're looking at, how COVID has impacted us, but also think, what I find really, really powerful is for, therapists to gather testimonials from their patients. So we were talking about yesterday, about how sometimes you can under value yourself and one of the best ways to actually realize your value is to actually ask patients for your feedback and ask them to give you testimonials, and then use those so that you can communicate how you can help other people. So I think, do the thankful Thursdays on both ends of the scale, think about what you're thankful for in what you have in your life, but think about how you are adding value to your patients' lives. And if you are feeling unsure about that, go out and ask for testimonials and ask for feedback, and majority

of patients will be absolutely happy to do that for you because also super grateful of what you can do for them.

Kate Markland: And I've spoken to a couple of clinic owners this week who, have been considering asking for testimonials, but wondered how to go about it and actually feel quite shy of asking

Celia Champion: You can make it really simple for your patients. Maybe even just ask them to answer a few questions. What made you choose us? What problem were you having that made you pick up the phone and come to us? What did you do? A nd what are the results from the treatment? So keep it really simple. Why did you come to us? What did you like about us? and what have your results been? Ask them to articulate those few things and then you can direct them to where you want them to be. Make it easy for them as well. So if you want to build up your Google reviews, send them a link so that they can easily add a review onto Google. If you want to put it onto your Facebook, or even if you just want them to fill in a quick form or email you and that you are able to then put it onto your website. Just kind of think about what do you want people to be saying. Where do you want to be posting them and just make it easy for them.

Kate Markland: And then the other thing I was asked this week was, well, when do I ask the testimonials? I suggested it was when clients are glowing, when that absolutely glowing with gratitude to you, that it's such a simple time to ask. Also, one of the clients I was talking to this week was making a number of follow-up phone calls, and then lots of her follow up phone calls t he clients were really well. So again, that was a perfect time to ask. When do you suggest people ask for the testimonials Celia.

Celia Champion: I've had some clients that have decided to do like a recommendation months and then they just have it in the practice where it says it's our recommendation month, please leave us a review on Facebook or Google. And so that's where they're proactively doing so, but I think you can go with a much softer approach, so that as Kate was saying, when people are glowing or someone says to you, wow, I feel so much better. Instead of saying, Oh, I'm so pleased, actually take it to the next step. And you can be saying, wow, that's great. We love hearing that. And

if you know of anyone else that could feel like that, please send them away or asking for their review saying, Oh, we love hearing that and we'd be ever so grateful if you add a review on our Facebook, because we rely on reviews to get patients through the door. So listen for those opportunities when patients say, wow, I feel so much better or when patients say, they managed to get back onto the golf course. Just listen for those opportunities and ask for those testimonials.

Kate Markland: This pink book that sits on my book case is full of testimonials. And a while ago I went crazy asking for testimonials, got loads and loads and loads of them. I hadn't necessarily read them all. And I'm sure it was you Celia that said to me, go get a cup of coffee, a Danish pastry, and sit down and read them all . Soak in what clients are actually saying, but also you can understand in a different way, the value of what it is that you're actually bringing to their lives. Because once you get in the rhythm of collecting them, it can then very easily become quite easy to get

in the habit, click collect, collect, but not actually take the time to sit and read and absorb and understand the value you truly bring into clients' lives. And that will also help you value yourself and your practice.

Kate Markland: It will also have an impact on your communication and marketing so that you can express yourself more clearly, rather than assuming the reasons clients can see you in the first place. So that wraps up this week. We'll start again on Monday. Mondays is going to be marketing tips. Tuesdays w e are going to do a training. Wednesdays is always going to be about wealth creation and Thursdays is always going to be about gratitude. We will put out, a post that will give you more detail about what the contents of next week.

Celia Champion: Just to add one more thing. We also rely on testimonials. So if you're enjoying our lives, please do pop a note in one of our posts. You know, one of our posts on Facebook or LinkedIn or wherever you find it and wherever you're watching it, we'd be super grateful. Thank you.

Kate Markland: Take care and have a great weekend. Bye bye everybody.
