Shannon Popkin is an author, speaker, Bible teacher, and host of the Live Like It’s True podcast. Shannon has spent years helping people engage Scripture in practical ways, and her latest work explores one of the habits that quietly damages our relationships more than we realize: judgment.

In this conversation, we talk about why judgment feels so unavoidable. Why do we feel judged so often? Why are we so quick to judge others? Shannon unpacks the hidden roots of our critical thoughts—from comparison and insecurity to assumptions we don't even realize we're making.

We also wrestle with an important question: Why do Christians sometimes seem especially judgmental? Shannon explains the crucial difference between discernment and judgment, and offers practical ways to replace criticism with curiosity, compassion, and grace.

Allison Byxbe is a writer, speaker, and advocate for honest conversations about grief, healing, and faith in the midst of life’s hardest realities.

Allison shares her story of walking through profound loss and heartbreak, including her sister’s stillbirth, her own miscarriage, a difficult genetic diagnosis for her son, and seasons of struggle within her marriage. She opens up about the questions, fears, and grief that accompanied those experiences, and the slow, often messy journey toward healing.

One of the most powerful parts of Allison’s story is the role journaling played along the way. We talk about how putting words to our pain can help us process emotions instead of suppressing them, why reflection is such an important part of healing, and how journaling can create space for God to meet us in our hardest seasons.

Emily and Matt are vindicated about the existance of water table fountains. Is Ariana Grande okay? Is it okay for society to be commenting on women’s bodies if they’re underweight? The 1 tillion different terms for women’s haircuts and styles that hairstylists are absolutely making up. How long is too long to wear an item of clothing before deciding to return it? Kaitlin has a ruin with a librarian. Matt doesn’t understand how libraries work. Does renting everyday clothes make any sense? The Black Tux is the best. Hanna Seymour is an author, speaker, Bible teacher, and a passionate advocate for helping people experience God in everyday life. Hanna encourages women to let go of perfectionism and embrace simple, sustainable rhythms that deepen their relationship with Jesus.

In this conversation, we talk about why so many Christians carry shame around the idea of having a “quiet time” and how that shame can actually keep us from connecting with God. Hanna shares practical, attainable ways to grow your faith, even in busy seasons, and reminds us that spiritual disciplines were never meant to be another item on our to-do list.

We also discuss a freeing truth: there is nothing we can do to make God love us more. We don’t earn His affection through Bible reading plans, prayer streaks, or perfect spiritual habits. Instead, those practices simply help us draw closer to the God who already loves us completely.

Finally, Hanna unpacks how the science of habit formation can work alongside spiritual growth, helping us create rhythms that are life-giving rather than guilt-inducing. If you've ever felt like you're failing at your faith because you can't seem to "do enough," this conversation is the breath of fresh air you've been looking for.

Kaitlin’s relationship with ChatGPT has become her greatest source of encouragement. Matt and Emily don’t quite understand the workings of a child’s water table toy. Kaitlin is experiencing a slight identity crisis as she’s starting to transition out of the early years of motherhood. Scott and Kaitlin go to their nephew’s wedding in Minnesota..congrats Grant and Lily! New Jersey’s fast-paced hustle culture is exhausting, it might be time to buy a family compound in the middle of nowhere. We tackle some big questions: Can kids see spiritual beings? Should middle schoolers have phones? Is it gross to sleep in the same shirt you wore all day? Slow-summer Kaitlin is beginning to emerge. Scott goes shopping to relieve stress while Kaitlin witnesses a cat viciously murder a chipmunk.

Erica Ligenza Gwynn is an author, speaker, and writer of That’s Just Not True: How to Replace the Lies You Didn’t Know You Believed with God’s Unchanging Truth.

In this conversation, Erica unpacks the cultural lies that often disguise themselves as empowerment but quietly leave us exhausted, anxious, and stuck. We dive into phrases we hear all the time—“God won’t give me more than I can handle,” “I can do anything,” “My feelings are my truth,” and “I am enough”—and explore why these ideas sound comforting but ultimately fall short.

Erica gently challenges the narratives we’ve absorbed from culture, social media, and even church circles, revealing the deeper truth beneath them and pointing us back to a more grounded, freeing understanding of God and ourselves.

Jennifer Dukes Lee is an author, speaker, and expert in helping people create rhythms that actually work in real life, not just in theory.

In this episode, Jennifer makes the bold claim that everyone is a morning person, you just haven’t discovered your style yet. We talk about identifying your unique “archetype” and how understanding it can completely change the way you start your day. She also breaks down the difference between routine and ritual, and why one feels like a chore while the other actually brings life.

We dive into the very real struggle of revenge bedtime procrastination (aka staying up way too late just to reclaim your time), and how to shift your habits without adding more pressure.

At the core of the conversation is this simple but powerful idea: it’s not about when you wake up, it’s about who you wake up to be.

We also dive into the nervous system and how that connects to things like the two (yes, two) types of procrastination.

We talk about the difference between emotionally skilled and unskilled families, how those patterns follow us into adulthood, and what it looks like to stop the cycle of emotional regression. It’s insightful, practical, and might just change the way you understand yourself.

Natalie Runion is the founder of Raised to Stay, author, worship leader, and pastor’s kid turned pastor. After watching people she loved walk away from the church, Natalie began writing about her own wrestling with faith and church hurt. What started as personal reflection grew into a global community committed to staying with Jesus while pursuing healing and restoration within the Church.

In this episode, we talk about why it can feel so difficult for women to find true, sacred sisterhood. Why does gossip creep in so easily? Why does jealousy divide us? Why are strong female leaders often labeled “controlling”? And why do working moms and stay-at-home moms sometimes turn on each other instead of linking arms? Natalie speaks candidly about the cultural and church dynamics that fracture women’s relationships and what it takes to build genuine, life-giving friendships instead.

Kevan shares his story of growing up with muscular atrophy and how, over time, he’s learned that serving others and being served are not opposites—they’re intertwined. We talk about how our needs can become doorways into deeper relationships, the difference between simply asking for help and intentionally inviting people into our need, and how it’s possible to give and receive at the same time.

Niki has studyied at Oxford, moved from England to North Carolina to plant a church, lead mission trips, and authored multiple books including Breathe Again, One Minute Prayers for Women with Cancer, and her latest God, Can We Chat? In this conversation, Heather brings both wisdom and vulnerability as we unpack what it means to live with passion (the word literally means “to suffer”). She challenges us to see passion not as chasing applause, but as pursuing what we can’t help but do even when no one is clapping. Heather also opens up about navigating her faith through her father’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, and reminds us that our circumstances never determine God’s presence.

We’ve got an update on Donald the Cat—the town legend who’s been missing for five years. Kaitlin has a mysterious leg twitch. Katilin and Scott make a regrettable mattress purchase. Then again, Scott regrets everything he buys.

Scott and Kaitlin’s nephew, Connor, and his wife, Shelby, are in town all the way from Colorado and officially step in as this week’s honorary “C-Team.” (Of course the “C” stands for Colorado and Connor and Shelby.) Things kick off lighthearted with Connor’s confession about nearly drowning Kaitlin (accidentally… or so he claims) and a round of hard-hitting “would you rather” questions. Connor and Shelby also share openly about the miscarriage they experienced earlier this year and the hope and healing they’ve found in the midst of grief.

Kaitlin’s painfully slow highway driving has become a public safety hazard. Plus, she discovers she is completely unable to accurately tell a story without over-exaggerating the details. Scott reveals he doesn’t need to wash his face (like…never), we weigh in on the ethics of peeing in the shower, and Cousin Suzy encounters a tragically dark omen. Emily abandons Norah at the first whiff of danger, Emerson’s patriotism is dangerously blurring with her theology, and Jayce pays a visit to Dr. Barbie.

It’s an Elliott’s-only week, and things kick off a little spicy. Kaitlin is zero help with podcast setup and somehow believes she’s a better driver than Scott.

But most of this episode dives deeper into Kaitlin’s journey with her spiritual director and the practice of slow spirituality. It’s honest, vulnerable, and yes...there are tears.

Matt and Emily had quite the week. Norah got her first cold (all thanks to her father) which led to their first ever adventure in rectal thermometers. Plus, they go into full wildlife rescue mode when a bird gets trapped in their fireplace.

Kaitlin and Scott wrap up a week of VBS (Vacation Bible School), which was a total win. Shoutout to the army of volunteers that went above and beyond to make it such a good experience for all of the kiddos!

Scott’s physical appearance is thriving…glowing, even…possibly hotter than ever? Plus, we talk about the return of nostalgic '90s summer vibes. We also dive into the Shiny Happy People documentary and talk honestly about abusive church/institutional cultures.

The audio files from last week’s SWEpisode vanished into the abyss (not Matt’s fault…cough cough), so the B-Team (Caroline and Josh) is here to save the day. We talk first jobs—Scott’s lasted about five minutes, and apparently Kaitlin was once a barista? Josh takes us back to his roots growing up on a farm in West-West Jersey where his parents owned a Christian bookstore.

Kaitlin cries on a beach (you’ll find out why), and is experimenting with a slow summer. We explore the philosophical conundrum of renovating a bathroom. Is Emerson channeling the spirit of Donald Trump? Plus, Kaitlin almost became a famous actress and Caroline’s on a journey toward becoming a comedian.

Kaitlin Kool-Aid Man’s straight through a closet door minutes after our last recording. Costco: the happiest place on earth...until you check your bank account. Scott somehow accidentally sleeps under the fitted sheet. We debate the best crappy pizza. Kaitlin and Scott buy donuts for their soccer team, only for the other team to shamelessly steal them. Rude.

Emily is too busy to put her credit cards in the wallet slots. Things get heated over Matt’s complete and utter lack of sense of urgency. Kaitlin “loses” her keys, but Scott heroically saves the day. And, the mom’s group at church pulls off an elaborate sinful prank by tricking (lying and deceiving) all the husbands into wearing the same shirt. Scott is hilariously oblivious. Emily? Today on the podcast we have Rochelle Miller. I met Roe at the funeral of our dear mutual friend, Josh “Sego” Segoviano. His story is detailed in Episode 14 of the podcast so make sure you check that out if you haven’t heard it yet!

Today, Roe vulnerably shares about a devastating trial she and her husband lived through in 2013. Roe was about halfway through her pregnancy when her doctors told her that her son was “incompatible with life.” She then was faced with many hard decisions: should she terminate the pregnancy? Should she believe for a miracle? Listen to hear how Roe and her husband Danny walked through this time together.
