Amanda T. shares her recovery story

Hi everyone, my name's Amanda and I'm a great recovered alcoholic. What a privilege and an honour it is for you inviting me here to speak today. My own group is an online meeting which is in West Virginia and I get it mixedup every time whether it's Point Pleasant or Pleasant Valley or whatever it isbut it's a great bunch of people that I truly love and it's a big book studyand in Australia we meet at 11.30am on a Tuesday morning but I think in the USover there it's 7.30pm eastern time on a Monday night.

Hope I got that right. It's not advertised onany of the social media but if you'd like to join us any time we'd love to haveyou and I can get those numbers out to you. My sobriety date is the 16th ofMarch 2013 and I live in a little coastal town in Australia by the beach and Iknow that that sounds really, really great and all the rest of it but it's veryisolated so I'm very thankful for Zoom and you know that I can reach out andmeet members all over the world and I'm so glad that you invited me here tospeak tonight.

I hope that something I say comes from myheart and reaches your heart and I feel very, very blessed that I'm sober todayby the grace of God and I never ever would have thought in a million years thatthere was a time where I could get a sober day, just one 24-hour day and themiracle of this program, don't ever give up hope. God's out there somewhere andI can't explain, I'm going to try and explain my story but some of the bits ofit I just can't put the words to it because it can't be explained and I'm goingto start right back and I know that this is going to sound a little bit weirdbut anyway it just goes to show that I believe that I was born an alcoholicbecause when I was a baby I was restless, irritable and discontent and I criedand cried and cried all the time and back then it was an old myth or whatever Imean it was just what was done. My mother used to put brandy in my bottle andthat used to shut me up and put me to sleep so you know I grew up in analcoholic home where you know it cured all ills.

Dave shares his recovery story.

Dave

My name's Dave, I'm an alcoholic, and it'slovely to be here down at the National Convention in Adelaide. I was a bingedrinker, and I can go for quite a while without needing a drink, but as soon asthe pressure or anxiety came in, then I'd drink. And it was a long time beforeI realised that I was an alcoholic.

And on my last day of drinking, or my last butone day of drinking, I was due to talk to some car dealers. I used to work fora motor company. And to start the morning off, I went down to the localsupermarket, which is started open early, and I bought two cans of wine. And although I had a lovely wine cellar at home, the only necessity wasthat on each can, it said 13% alcohol.
