Born in Kyoto Japan and raised in North Carolina, pianist Jeff Nations began studying at the age of eight and playing professionally by the age of sixteen, performing in local establishments in his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Actively competing by the age of twelve, he was the recipient of numerous awards, and by age 17 was the first prize winner in the Young Artist Competition held by the Raleigh Piano Teachers' Association. The next year he took first prize in the Concerto Division of the same competition, performing the final movement of Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto in G minor.

He was a finalist in the Sanford Scholarship Competition to attend The North Carolina School of the Arts, where his teachers were Marian Hahn and Robert McDonald. While attending NCSA, Mr. Nations was a member of the ONYX Contemporary Ensemble, under which he premiered his own work "Night Fantasy" for solo piano (not to be confused with the work by Elliot Carter of the same title).

Upon graduating from NCSA with the prestigious Irwin Freundlich Award in Piano, he was offered a scholarship to study with pianist David Bradshaw in New York City.

He has performed in various cities throughout the U.S., including New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., San Antonio, as well as throughout North Carolina and Ohio. His Philadelphia performances include recitals at The Church of Saint Luke and the Epiphany, The Ethical Society of Philadelphia, The Fleischer Art Memorial, Jacob's Music, and The Karin Fuller Capanna Memorial Concert at the Settlement Music School.

A classical artist who is accomplished in a variety of musical genres including popular idioms, musical theater, and gospel, he has consistently endeavored to break through barriers that have often stood between the classical musician and the public. From 1995 to 1998 he was a regular pianist for The Philadelphia Gospel Seminars Choir and the Villanova Gospel Choir.

Recognized for his performances of works by American composers, he has collaborated extensively with Soprano Diana Barnhart and has also served as Artistic Ambassador for the United States Government, performing in over twenty recitals in countries throughout the Middle East including Saudi Arabia, Syria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Oman and Egypt as well as conducting master classes at the Cairo and Alexandria Conservatories.

He has lectured on the Taubman Approach and since 1998 has been studying the Taubman Approach with Robert Durso, Senior Faculty Member of The Golandsky Institute.

A former faculty member of the Settlement Music School, Mr. Nations now teaches privately in Philadelphia and the surrounding area.

I've always loved piano. Ever since I was a kid, I loved all the different sounds the piano could make. From the blues to rock to the classics, I played everything.

As I got older and more serious, I realized there were things I couldn’t do. When I tried to play the music I loved, it hurt. I had pains in my wrists, and there were many techniques my body refused to do. I decided to go to college for music because I knew I had limits, and I wanted to go past them.

After getting a Bachelor’s and a Master’s, I play well. Professional level. I’ve studied with masters such as Phyllis Lehrer, Ingrid Clarfield, and Robert Durso, and I’ve overcome every difficulty I ever had. Thanks to that, I love piano more as an adult than I ever did as a child.

Here’s the thing:

A lot of what I learned in college can be learned in high school. Middle school. Even elementary school! I can prevent your child from having to face many of these difficulties. I can show your child short cuts to playing the music of their dreams. Because I went through those struggles, I know what to look for, and I know how to fix it.

No matter what your child wants to do with music, I am on the lookout for ways to help them succeed. Yes, everyone believes in hard work, but hard work simply isn’t enough. You need a guide who knows how to get results from that effort. My students have won top awards that led them to performances at Carnegie Hall, Baruch Performing Arts Center, and Gill Memorial Chapel.

On today's episode the brilliant pianist, Andrew King, shares about his incredible journey of reaching new artistic heights through the Taubman Approach. He has been studying this work with master teacher, Robert Durso, for two decades.

His quest to finding a comprehensive piano technique was on his heart for many years until one day, serendipitously he was making eggs in a communal kitchen in Vienna when someone shared with him the Taubman Approach.

Pianist Andrew King is a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborative artist based in Connecticut. Mr. King has performed throughout the Northeast, including to a sold-out hall at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall as soloist and with his colleague, soprano Julie Reumert. He has played in masterclasses for several world-class pianists and pedagogues, including Edna Golandsky, Ilya Itin, Paul Roberts, Yael Weiss, and Robert Wyatt. After winning many local competitions by age 17, Mr. King went on to Bowdoin College to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music. He subsequently completed his master’s degree in piano performance from the Hartt School of Music as the recipient of the William S. Vincent Scholarship. While studying in Vienna, Austria, he and violist Sean Reilly won the first prize in chamber music for the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) program in 2003, and they performed with musicians from Milan, Italy. Mr. King regularly performs on the St. John’s Summer Music Concert Series in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

In addition to performing, Mr. King continues to refine his technique as both student and teacher. He is a Certified Associate Instructor of the Taubman Approach, the groundbreaking and transformative approach to piano playing that provides the necessary tools for musical expressiveness through healthy motions at the keyboard. He has studied extensively with Robert Durso, master Taubman teacher and co-founder of the Golandsky Institute, in New York; he was also a student of Gerald Stofsky in Vienna, and Margreet Francis and David Westfall at the Hartt School of Music. After teaching as faculty of the Hartt School Community Division for many years, Mr. King now offers private lessons, both online and at his home studio in Connecticut. He is a long-standing member of the Hartford Chapter of the Connecticut State Music Teachers Association, through which his students have frequently placed in local competitions. A frequent collaborator, Ms. Grace is a member of the Capriole Duo with Barbara Leibundguth, former co-principal flutist in the Minnesota Orchestra. The acclaimed ensemble has performed extensively together throughout the United States since 1984. The Duo was chosen to perform at the National Flute Conference in Chicago, toured under the auspices of the Midwest Arts Council and was featured on the Ruel Joyce Series in Kansas City. Ms. Grace has appeared with the Ives Quartet on the Chamber Music Tulsa Series, and has performed in ensembles nationwide, including at the University of Texas, University of Denver, Drake University and the Lawrence Conservatory of Music. Ms. Ms. Grace regularly concertizes with Dr. Janet Fetterman in duo-piano and four-hand collaborations. The duo was featured as the Conference Artists for the Missouri Federation State Convention.
Ms. Grace was selected as a 2021 Steinway and Sons Top Teacher and was the winner of the 2014 Kansas Outstanding Teacher of the Year. A dedicated and enthusiastic teacher, she has taught at Rice University, Houston, Texas and Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Her students frequently win top prizes in competitions and festivals.
Ms. Grace is certified at the Master Level of the Taubman Approach through the Golandsky Institute, New York City, and has been involved with the Taubman Approach since 1986. She regularly coaches with Edna Golandsky and John Bloomfield, New York City. She has extensive experience teaching the principles of injury prevention and recovery. Barbara Banacos is the daughter of world-renowned jazz educator Charlie Banacos and pianist/educator Margaret Banacos. She began teaching in her mother's studio in 1997. Ms. Banacos teaches children and adults from beginner to advanced levels with a focus on classical music and offers advanced technical training in the Taubman Approach.

While completing her undergrad and graduate degrees in music from CUNY Hunter College, Ms. Banacos ran a private studio in Millburn/Short Hills, NJ and taught at Montclair State University Preparatory School. Since returning to the Boston area in 2003, Ms. Banacos teaches in-home private lessons in Lexington and Winchester, MA and at her home studio in Hamilton, MA. She has also taught remotely since 2010, reaching students as far away as Malaysia and New Zealand.

One of only three teachers in the Boston area certified in the Taubman Approach, Ms. Banacos has studied with Robert Durso of the Golandsky Institute since 1997. She is certified at the Associate level with the Golandsky Institute, is adjunct faculty for their annual summer symposiums at Princeton University and has led their support groups for many years. She has presented lectures on piano technique at the Golandsky Institute Boston Workshops and was invited to teach at the Danilo Pérez Foundation in Panama, assisting Edna Golandsky. John Bloomfield is a Ken­tucky native and a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Furman University in Greenville, S.C. An award-winning solo and chamber pianist, he has been broadcast by Public Radio in New England and has been heard on the air in New York under the auspices of Ars Viva. He earned a master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music, and since then has been a long-term student of Dorothy Taubman and Edna Go­landsky. He has taught at Adelphi University and in the pre-college division of the Manhattan School of Music. In demand as a clinician and adjudicator around the country, he has lectured at a number of colleges and universities. He was invited several times to teach in Taiwan and has been a featured presenter at the Breckenridge Music Institute, state MTA conventions, and the MTNA Conventions in 2005, 2009, and 2014. He was the keynote speaker at the 2007 MTA convention in California. He was guest artist at the University of Alabama in 2013. He traveled to Australia in 2014 to teach and present lectures on the Taubman Approach. Mr. Bloomfield maintains a studio in New York City, where he is also a performance associ­ate at Hunter College and an adjunct instructor at Queens College. He travels regularly to Portland, Atlanta, and the San Francisco Bay Area to con­sult and give lessons. He is a co-founder and senior director of the Golandsky Institute, which he also serves as faculty chair.

Grammy award winning pianist Bill Charlap has performed with many of the leading artists of our time including Phil Woods, Tony Bennett, Gerry Mulligan, Wynton Marsalis, Freddy Cole and Houston Person. Born in New York City, Charlap began playing the piano at age three. His father was Broadway composer Moose Charlap, whose credits include Peter Pan, and his mother is singer Sandy Stewart, who toured with Benny Goodman, and was a regular on the Perry Como show. She earned a 1963 Grammy nomination for her recording of “My Coloring Book." In 2005, Charlap and Stewart released the acclaimed CD, Love Is Here To Stay (Blue Note).

In 1997, Charlap formed his trio with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington, now recognized as one of the leading groups in jazz. In 2000, he was signed to Blue Note Records and received two Grammy Award nominations, for Somewhere: The Songs of Leonard Bernstein and The Bill Charlap Trio: Live at the Village Vanguard. He is known for his interpretations of American popular song.. Time magazine wrote, “Bill Charlap approaches a song the way a lover approaches his beloved…no matter how imaginative or surprising his take on a song is, he invariably zeroes in on its essence.” In 2016, Tony Bennett & Bill Charlap: The Silver Lining, The Songs of Jerome Kern, was awarded a Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Album. In April, the Bill Charlap Trio released, Notes from New York, their debut recording for the Impulse label. Alan Morrison's five-star review in Down Beat stated that the new recording is "a masterclass in class."

In 2019, Charlap will be celebrating his 15th year as Artistic Director of New York City’s Jazz in July Festival at 92Y. He has produced concerts for Jazz at Lincoln Center, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Chicago Symphony Center and the Hollywood Bowl. Charlap is married to renowned jazz pianist and composer Renee Rosnes, and the two artists often collaborate in a duo piano setting. In 2010 Charlap and Rosnes released Double Portrait (Blue Note). Bill Charlap is currently the Director of Jazz Studies at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey.

Edna Golandsky is a world-renowned piano pedagogue and the leading exponent of the Taubman Approach. She has earned wide acclaim throughout the United States and abroad for her pedagogical expertise, and for using the Taubman piano technique. She is also known for her extraordinary ability to solve technical problems and for her penetrating musical insight.

​Ms. Golandsky started piano study in Israel at the age of eight. A gifted pianist, she played recitals at the age of ten and was performing with orchestras by the age of twelve. Ms. Golandsky came to the United States when she was sixteen years old, and was immediately accepted to the Juilliard School in their Preparatory Division.

She remained at Juilliard for the next eight years, studying with Jane Carlson, Rosina Lhevinne and Adele Marcus, and graduating with bachelor and master’s degrees in piano performance.

Described as “a musical phenomenon” (Pianiste magazine), Yamaha Artist Lisa Yui enjoys a multifaceted musical career as pianist, lecturer, teacher, author, and musical director. Since making her concerto debut at the age of seven, Lisa Yui has performed throughout North America, Europe, and Asia as a recitalist and soloist with orchestra. She is the top prizewinner of the Senigallia International Piano Competition in Italy, the Super Classics International Auditions in Tokyo, and has twice been the recipient of a Canada Council Scholarship.
Lisa Yui has performed as soloist with prominent orchestras such as the Tokyo Symphony, Polish National Radio, Toronto Symphony, Edmonton Symphony, the Montreal Metropolitan Orchestra, and the Krakow State Philharmonic. Her performances have been broadcast on WQXR (New York), CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation), CJRT-FM (Ontario, Canada), and STV (Sapporo, Japan). She has performed in Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto, Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, and the Liszt Ferenc Memorial Museum in Budapest, among other major concert venues around the world.
As a lecturer and performer, Ms. Yui originated The Lives of the Piano, Manhattan School of Music’s first piano lecture/concert series, now in its 23rd season. Here's why: Dimitris came across the Taubman Technique tapes during a questioning period in his professional career. He studied these 10 DVD's for years. He understood the concepts and the language used to the point where he began to apply them to his playing. But - it was not until he met Edna Golandsky that he realized he that he needed to study this incredible work with an expert one on one.

Dimitris Kostopoulos was born in 1984, and grew up in Bodø, Norway. He is among the leading Norwegian pianists of his generation, and holds a Master’s degree in piano from the Barratt Due Institute of Music and the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. His main teacher was the recognized Czech professor Jiri Hlinka. In addition to this, he has participated in masterclasses with the Norwegian professor Einar Steen-Nøkleberg, the Dutch professor Marcel Baudet and the Swedish professor Hans Pålsson. He as also studied the work of Dorothy Taubman and Edna Golandsky through the Taubman Techniques.

Dimitris Kostopoulos has established himself as a professional concert pianist with performances at several of Norway’s most famous music festivals and concert halls. His performances as pianist includes the Bergen International Music Festival, ULTIMA Contemporary Music Festival, Oslo Grieg Festival, The Hemsing Festival, Nordland Music Festival, the Music Festival of Northern Norway, the Northern Light Festival and the Opera in Oslo, Oslo Concert Hall and many other venues. In addition to this, he has performed regularly abroad giving concerts in Sweden, Vietnam, Portugal, Lithuania, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, South Africa, Italy and Russia.

As a soloist, Kostopoulos has performed with many orchestras, including the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, Lithuaninan State Symphony Orchestra, Oslo Camerata, Tromsø Symphony Orchestra, Barratt Due Symphony Orchestra, Banda Sinfonica da PSP, Bodø Sinfonietta, the MiNensemble, Narvik City Symphony Orchestra, Bodø City Symphony Orchestra and LVO. Kostopoulos has worked with conductors such as Bjarte Engeseth, Arvid Engegård, Stephan Barratt-Due, Pierre-André Valade, Jonathan Stockhammer, Torodd Wigum, Alf Richard Kraggerud, Terje Boye Hansen, Jan Ludvig Jacobsen and Nicolas Carthy.

Another important part of Kostopoulos’ career is his devotion to chamber music. His mother was a professional soprano, and already from the age of 13 he started to accompany her and perform concerts with her. Since then chamber music has been a natural part of his work as a pianist, resulting in collaborations with many of Norway’s leading musicians such as Catharina Chen, Guro Kleven Hagen, Audun Sandvik, Bjarne Magnus Jensen, Ragnhild Hemsing, Eldbjørg Hemsing, Cathrine Bullock, Ingebjørg Kosmo, Angelica Voje, Christian Mortensen and others.

Since 2011 he has held the position as pianist in the MiNensemble. This is a chamber music ensemble based in northern Norway, touring throughout Norway as well as internationally.

Pianist Sean Duggan is a monk of St. Joseph Abbey in Covington, Louisiana. He obtained his music degrees from Loyola University in New Orleans and Carnegie Mellon University. He received a Master’s degree in theology from Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. From 1988 to 2001 he taught music, Latin, and religion at St. Joseph Seminary College in Louisiana and was director of music and organist at St. Joseph Abbey.

In September 1983 he won first prize in the Johann Sebastian Bach International Competition for Pianists in Washington, D.C., and again in August 1991. Having a special affinity for the music of Bach, in 2000 he performed the complete cycle of Bach’s keyboard works eight times in various American and European cities. For seven years he hosted a weekly program on the New Orleans NPR station entitled “Bach on Sunday.” He is presently in the midst of recording the complete cycle of Bach’s keyboard (piano) music, which will comprise 24 CDs.

Before he joined the Benedictine order he was pianist and assistant chorus master for the Pittsburgh Opera Company for three years. He has performed with many orchestras including the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Leipzig Baroque Soloists, the Prague Chamber Orchestra, the American Chamber Orchestra, and the Pennsylvania Sinfonia. From 2001 to 2004 he was a visiting professor of piano at the University of Michigan. Currently he is associate professor of piano at SUNY at Fredonia. During the fall semester of 2008 he was also a guest professor of piano at Eastman School of Music. He has been a guest artist and adjudicator at the Chautauqua Institution for several summers, and is also a faculty member of the Golandsky Institute at Princeton, New Jersey. He continues to study the Taubman approach with Edna Golandsky in New York City.

Today’s episode features a conversation with Josu de Solaun as he describes the new heights and depths of artistic expression he experienced in studying the Taubman work with Edna Golandsky. Josu was not injured when he came to the Taubman approach. He wanted to understand what he did well at the piano and to discover his limitations in order to play with more freedom, power, speed and artistic expression.

In the 2023 edition, the ICMA jury expressed: "Josu de Solaun is one of the most impressive discoveries of the past decade. Not only is he a technically impressive pianist, but his interpretative imagination also knows no limits. His interpretations ideally reflect De Solaun's ability to engage with works symbiotically and at the highest energy levels. Free of aesthetic dogmas, the pianist creates cosmoses of a solitary nature."

He is also the sole Spanish pianist to win first prizes at the José Iturbi (2006) and George Enescu (2014) international piano competitions since their inception in 1980 and 1958, respectively. Esteemed pianists like Elisabeth Leonskaja (1964) and Radu Lupu (1967) have previously won the Enescu Competition.

In 2019, President of Romania Klaus Iohannis appointed him Officer of the Order of the Cultural Merit of the Republic of Romania, acknowledging his artistic work and promotion of George Enescu’s music—whose complete works for piano he recorded under the NAXOS label—and Romanian musical culture globally.

Josu, trained by Salvador Chuliá and pianists María Teresa Naranjo and Ana Guijarro in Spain, later studied in New York under pianists Nina Svetlanova and Horacio Gutiérrez, enabling him to exhibit his musical artistry in various forms. Further studies in New York included composition with Giampaolo Bracali and conducting with Robert Isaacs and David Gilbert, along with chamber music with Robert Mann (Juilliard Quartet) and Isidore Cohen (Beaux Arts Trio).

Jessica Duchen of BBC Music Magazine praised: "De Solaun allows the expression to lead at all times, no matter how intense the virtuosity. There is always an elastic vitality in his interpretations, a warm and intimate approach to his phrasing, and a beautiful, sweet tone."

Justo Romero in Scherzo declared: "It is difficult to imagine a more powerful and creative pianism. De Solaun is one of the most interesting virtuosos of the contemporary keyboard. Spanish and non-Spanish. A vigorous, wise pianism, of refined workmanship and great musicality. We are before a true colossus of the piano, a true virtuoso, in the old style, who makes use of his resplendent technique and the extroverted dramatic, his strong artistic nature to conjugate versions that combine brilliance and effusiveness, fire and delicacy, always with an intense pianistic foundation, all with naturalness, strength, power, sonorous opulence, and intense expressive sense."

Arthur Simoes enjoys a diverse career as a pianist, composer, and educator. He has performed extensively in Europe, as well as in Latin America and in the United States, and he frequently presents lectures, workshops, and masterclasses across the globe.

Passionate about education, Arthur has run a successful private studio for more than 10 years. He has also taught at the Institut Jaques-Dalcroze and at the Haute Ecole de Musique in Geneva, Switzerland. His teaching is rooted in the conviction that every person has the innate ability to learn music, and encompasses elements from Dalcroze Eurhythmics as well as the Taubman Approach.

Arthur is a first prize winner of the 29th European Music Competition “Città di Moncalieri”, in Italy, as well as other piano competitions. Venues and festivals where he performed include the Victoria Hall (Geneva), La Schubertiade sur la Colline (Neuchâtel), and the Berklee Performance Center (Boston).

His musical journey began at the age of 6, and he enrolled at the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève at the age of 10, from which he graduated with the Arditi Award for the best final recital of the year. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Piano and a Master’s degree in Music Pedagogy – Dalcroze Eurhythmics from the Haute Ecole de Musique de Genève, as well as the Diplôme Supérieur of the Dalcroze method. During his Dalcroze studies, Arthur was awarded the Institut-Jaques Dalcroze Award “for his qualities as eurhythmician”, the Emile Jaques-Dalcroze Foundation Award “for the excellence of his improvisation exam” and the Aletheia Foundation Award “for the excellence of his Diplôme Supérieur choreography”. He has also pursued in-depth studies of the Taubman Approach with his mentor Edna Golandsky, in New York.

His passion for improvised music as well as the desire to broaden his horizons have brought Arthur to Berklee College of Music to pursue a Professional Music Diploma with concentrations in Jazz Composition and Performance, as he continues to perform, compose, and teach.

Hugo Bermúdez is the first and only certified teacher of the Taubman Approach in Mexico and Latin America. He teaches this approach mainly to commited amateurs, conservatory students, teachers and professional pianists in Mexico, Argentina, Guatemala, Chile, Uruguay, Puerto Rico, Switzerland, Spain, India and the United States.

Working along with the Golandsky Institute, he has created the project “Taubman en Español”, creating original video content in Spanish and putting subtitles into existing Golandsky Institute videos. This effort is key to helping to make this body of knowledge more accessible to the Hispanic community.

Bermúdez holds a Bachelors degree in piano performance from the “Autonomous University of Nuevo León” in Mexico, where he graduated with the highest honors (Academic Merit Award).

He has deepened his musical knowledge by studying interpretation with the renowned expert in music phenomenology, Jordi Mora (Spain), by currently working towards his Masters degree in Musical Interpretation and Investigation from “Valentian International University”, and by continuing to study the Taubman Approach with the world's leading expert, Edna Golandsky.

Born in Santa Monica, California, Debbie Poryes found herself at the piano when she was five, practicing everything from Chopin to show tunes. Playing led to fascination with musical theory and structure, then jazz standards, composing, and improvising. Hearing Monk and Miles as a teenager, she fell in love with their music and decided to become a jazz pianist. At twenty, her first regular paying gig lasted a year at a Berkeley restaurant, playing five nights a week from 5 p.m. to midnight.

Debbie has always gone her own way musically, even while maintaining a constant study through transcription and analysis of her favorite players and composers, such as Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett, Horace Silver, Hank Jones, Sonny Clark, and Clare Fischer. Drawn strongly to 20th century classical music, she has been influenced by many composers, including Aaron Copland and Norman Dello Joio. In her early years as a musician in Oakland, her passion led her to play frequently at jam sessions while continuing to study classical music and jazz with local players. She composed and arranged music, and produced her own concerts with her duos, trios and quartets in addition to freelancing with various local singers and bands. She has performed all over the San Francisco Bay Area notably, at the Stanford Jazz Festival, SFJazz, Yoshi’s Jazzclub, the Berkeley Jazzschool, the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, and the Piedmont Piano Company. True to her beginnings, she still loves playing in restaurants and played twice-weekly for 6 years at the New Orleans-styled Oakland restaurant Pican, only stopping when the restaurant up and closed!

A significant aspect to Debbie’s musical life has been her experience with tendonitis in her wrists. In her thirties, pain forced her to stop playing for two years, during which time she explored many avenues of healing. A breakthrough came when she happened upon Dorothy Taubman’s piano technique, which emphasized maintaining the natural coordination of the fingers, hand, and arm. Absorbing this new way of thinking, Debbie continues to study it with her teacher John Bloomfield in New York and pass it along to her grateful students. The injury turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it led not only to Debbie’s development of a beautiful sound without harshness but also an ease and control she didn’t have before. One has only to see Debbie play to appreciate how comfortable her hands are at the keyboard.

Debbie felt the call to teach early in her career and continues to adore helping students understand jazz and further their own playing. Debbie has internet students around the globe in addition to her students at her home studio. She taught at the Berkeley Jazzschool for over 20 years as well as many summers at the Stanford Summer Jazz Program and has given presentations to the California Music Teachers’ Association on how to teach jazz.

In the summer of 2018 Debbie moved to Philadelphia. Her husband Tony Fels retired from his teaching job at the University of San Francisco and they, along with their daughter, returned to his hometown. She continues to teach her California and global students through the internet and is enjoying her new students and gigs in Philadelphia.

I am watching the Taubman Technique videos. Actually, I am absolutely consuming this material. Friends, it's what you are searching for in giving freedom and new levels to your playing. On those tapes, there is an interesting quote of Dorothy Taubman some of which appears in the publicly available documentary, The Choreography of the Hands. (We have it available on the Golandsky Institute YouTube channel). On today's episode we welcome the brilliant, Swiss pianist, Sebastian Issler. Sebastian was in London during the beginning of the pandemic. He was in need of lessons online and remembered watching 'The Choreography of the Hands' a few years before. He then sought out Robert Durso. Since then, he has been having lessons with Robert Durso online and has travelled to Philadelphia several times for in person lessons. Swiss Pianist Sebastian Issler received the Jean Meikle Prize for best Duo at the 2022 Wigmore Hall/Bollinger International Song Competition, together with British-Hungarian soprano Anna Cavaliero. He is the winner of the 2022 Paul Hamburger Prize for Lieder, finalist of several international competitions, including the International Schubert Competition Dortmund, and multiple prize winner of the Swiss Youth Music Competition.

Sebastian is the first pianist-in-residence at the City Music Foundation in London, which also acts as his management.

With his duo partners, Sebastian has performed at Milton Court Concert Hall, International Lied Festival Zeist, LIEDBasel Festival, Origen Festival Cultural, Liedrezital Zurich, Abbey Library of Saint Gall, Tonhalle Zurich, Barts Heritage Great Hall, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and Wigmore Hall, among others. He also appears regularly as an accompanist in masterclasses with luminaries such as Brigitte Fassbaender and Thomas Hampson, and recently as a soloist with the Collegium Vocale Lenzburg in Switzerland.

In 2021, he recorded his unique programme ‘The World of Song’ for the Montreux Jazz Festival China at the Schubertiade Hall. ‘The World of Song’ was first broadcast in an immersive cinema in 360 Reality Audio at the festival in Hangzhou, China.

He is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, where he completed his Artist Diploma as a Guildhall Scholar working with Julius Drake and was a member of Graham Johnson's Song Guild. Prior to his studies in London, Sebastian completed two master's degrees, both with distinction, at the Zurich University of the Arts. He is a scholarship holder of Arosa Kultur and LIEDBasel.

Sebastian is influenced greatly by working with Robert Durso at the Golandsky Institute in New York which significantly changed his own playing and teaching style. He is based in Zurich and enjoys teaching, specializing in the Taubman Approach.

He is currently a fellow at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where he gives his lecture ‘Choreography of the Hands’ to piano master students in the piano accompaniment programme. Sebastian is a teacher for piano accompaniment at the Zurich University of Teacher Education and is a guest lecturer at the Zurich University of the Arts.

Robert Dvorkin loved music and studied it at a high level when he was a young man. To pay the bills, Robert entered into a career in IT and continued to enjoy the piano, practicing and performing. Through a variety of circumstances, Robert moved back to Canada from New York City for his work in IT and came to a place where he wanted to get back into music full-time. As he had been studying the Taubman Approach with John Bloomfield since 2000, he was able to be certified in the Taubman Approach and is only one of three Canadians currently certified in this work.

This episode frames the incredible journey of Robert in his love for the piano and teaching. He gets to the heart of why teaching this work is so important. People need music!

I also want to say, the learning process is explored and some key insights into the work is discussed.

Here is a bit more about Robert:

I grew up Edmonton, AB, where I began to study piano at the age of nine. For five years, until I was 17, I studied with Ernesto Lejano. Dr. Lejano taught at the University of Alberta, but had a few private students, and I was privileged to be among them. He imbued me with a love for music that continues to this day.

From there I went to the Indiana University School of Music (now the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University), studying primarily with Enrica Cavallo-Gulli. Maestra Gulli was a consummate musician, both as a soloist and as a partner in the Duo Cavallo-Gulli with her husband, violinist Franco Gulli. It was under her tutelage that I grew as a musician. I graduated from Indiana University with Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in piano performance. In 1988 I moved to New York City, where I lived for the next 25 years.

While in New York, I taught and concertized in both the United States and Canada. In 1999 I began studying with John Bloomfield, who remains my teacher to this day. With John I intensified my study of the Taubman Approach, which I describe in detail here. I am certified to teach the Taubman Approach as an Associate of the Golandsky Institute, one of only three Canadians to have been so-honoured.

In 2014 I repatriated to Canada, settled in Ottawa, and built a teaching studio out of my home in the Copeland Park neighbourhood. I continue to concertize, lecture, and teach privately. I teach practical piano as well as theory and harmony. I am currently accepting students from intermediate to advanced levels. Whatever your musical goals are, I know I can help you achieve them. Vincent Wong is a dedicated music educator and pianist, specializing in piano improvisation. With a deep belief in the transformative power of improvisation, Wong is committed to providing students with a holistic approach to learning music.

With a rich musical background, Wong has honed his skills through extensive experience and training. He has had the privilege of collaborating with renowned musicians and ensembles in diverse genres, including classical, baroque, contemporary, and non-classical music.

Notable recent productions showcasing Wong's musical prowess include his involvement in the successful arrangements for "Animenz" and the Hong Kong Doujin Philharmonia in 2023. He also participated in the post music production of the movie”Still Human". Wong's compositions have been recognized and he has served as a member of CASH in Hong Kong. He worked as a media composer at Hong Kong TML Media.

As an educator, Wong brings a wealth of teaching methods and experiences to his students. He has completed ANCOS Orff music and movement education level courses level 1, studied the Dalcroze method under Joseph Reizer, and participated in a Dalcroze workshop at Carnegie Mellon University. Wong's expertise extends to teaching music in Montessori kindergartens and serving as a lecturer in Montessori teacher training programs. In fact, he was invited to speak at the Montessori Asia conference in Hong Kong in 2017, where he shared his unique approach to music education.

Wong's commitment to fostering creativity and musical expression through piano improvisation is evident in his teaching philosophy. By imparting the skills and techniques of improvisation, Wong empowers his students to explore their own musicality and develop a deep connection to their instrument.

Wong holds a Master of Education from Hong Kong Baptist University, having previously earned a first-honor Bachelor's degree in Music Education from the same institution. His passion for music sparked at a young age when he began playing the piano at six years old. Throughout his musical journey, Wong has been privileged to study under esteemed instructors such as Mr. Shi Jing Lin, Miss Kwok Ting, Mr. Raymond Young, and Mrs. Nancy Loo. Israeli pianist Eden Agranat Meged is a full ABRSM Scholarship student at the Royal Academy of Music, London, in the class of Ian Fountain. He started his piano studies in Jerusalem with Anat Paul at the Hasadna Conservatory and continued with Adela Umansky, at the Kfar-Saba Conservatory. Eden won the first prizes in the Lillian Davis Piano Competition, London, the Harriet Cohen Bach Competition, London, and the Pnina Salzman Piano Competitions, Israel. Jennifer Rosenfeld is the creator of The White Rose, a podcast and musical based on the true story of a student-led resistance movement in Nazi Germany. In addition to writing the music and lyrics, she performed on the recording as a pianist and singer. Previously, Jennifer composed the music for the 15-minute musical Fears Anonymous, which debuted at the 2018 Hollywood Fringe Festival, presented by New Musicals Inc.

Jennifer is a leading arts entrepreneurship educator, speaker, and coach. Since 2010 she has advised and consulted for individual artists, educational institutions, and arts non profit organizations, on projects ranging from developing new artistic and education programs, to curriculum design and organizational culture. From 2019-2021 she ran the 6 Figure Musician Entrepreneurprogram and live virtual Intensive, an entirely online education program which has provided musicians and creatives around the world with the skills to gain financial independence through creating profitable online education and coaching businesses.

Mezzo-soprano Ann Marie Adamick is a lifelong singer and performer who has worked with a variety of classical choral groups for over thirty years. She is a frequent soloist in the Capital Region of New York, appearing with Saratoga Voices and the Schenectady Octavo Singers in performances of Handel’s The Messiah, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Mozart’s Requiem, Mozart’s Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, Bach’s Magnificat, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Rutter’s Magnificat. Deren Eryılmaz started her formal music education at Bilkent University, Music Preparatory School in Ankara, Turkey. She attended the Piano Department of the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts of Bilkent University, with a merit scholarship.

She continued her education at the Rotterdam Conservatory (CODARTS) as a student of Michael Davidson in 1999 and graduated and got her bachelor degree in 2003. She participated in several master classes in Turkey and abroad; studied with Pascal Devonyon, Gülsin Onay, Mehmet Okonsar, Aquiles Delle Vigne and Georgy Sandor. Eryılmaz performed at various festivals, gave solo and chamber music concerts, participated in multidisciplinary performances and performed with national and university orchestras as a soloist in The Netherlands, Belgium, Turkey and France.

Eryılmaz received her master’s degree at Baskent University State Conservatory in Ankara under the supervision of Mehmet Okonsar in 2007. She also worked as a research assistant during her studies at this university while she was responsible for organising the national and international concert tours of the Baskent University String Orchestra. Between 2005-2009, Eryılmaz was the Chair of the Selection and Organization Committee at The Center for Contemporary Arts, Ankara. Throughout four concert seasons, the Committee, under the supervision of Eryılmaz, organized over 100 chamber music concerts as well as electro-acoustic concert series, lunch concert series, world music and jazz series with renowned international performers. She was a member of the Academic Team of the Bilkent University, Faculty of Music and Performing Arts, as a lecturer and instructor (2008-2011) at the Piano Department.

In addition to her academic duties and responsibilities, she was the coordinator of the Piano Department (2009-2011) and the Performance Organization Coordinator (2008-2010). She also supervised the Early Age Music Training Program (2009-2010) and Erasmus Departmental Exchange Program (2009-2011). Eryılmaz started working on the Taubman Approach with Edna Golandsky in 2011 in New York. Following her acceptance to the Teacher Training Program of the Golandsky Institute in 2013, she is certified as an Instructor of the Institute in 2014, Associate Level teacher in 2016 and Master Level teacher in 2021.

The students she has been teaching throughout her academic career have been successful in receiving acceptance to internationally distinguished schools with full scholarship grants, as well as in performing as soloists with various orchestras. Her students have also been receiving awards at international piano competitions. She moved her piano studio from Istanbul to London, where she currently lives and teaches the Taubman Approach. The works capture the feelings of joy, intensity and passion that we sometimes lose sight of in our lives. The figure paintings represent vulnerability and strength in the female form. He has been featured seven times on APM’s Performance Today and on the cover of Clavier Magazine with his recordings streamed worldwide.
Celebrating his twenty-five-year collaboration with Philip Glass, Barnes commissioned and gave the world premiere of Glass's Piano Quintet "Annunciation." The work is Glass's first piano quintet and first work based on Greek Orthodox chant. Barnes recording of the quintet with string quartet superstars Brooklyn Rider was released in October of 2019 to critical acclaim. ResMusica in Paris wrote: "Paul Barnes, whose pianistic lines are always clear, is a marvel of dialogue with Brooklyn Rider."

Barnes is Marguerite Scribante Professor of Music at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Glenn Korff School of Music. He was recently appointed Artistic Director of the Lied Center Piano Academy which welcomes several high-school pianists to Lincoln each summer for an intensive week of piano, composition, improvisation and collaboration. He will also be teaching this summer in Greece at the Piano Plus Summer Institute. In great demand as a pedagogue and clinician, Barnes has served as convention artist at several state MTNA conventions, most recently at Virginia and was recently named "Teacher of the Year" by the Nebraska Music Teachers Association.
Barnes latest recital Illumination features a contemplative and cathartic program of piano works inspired by the mystical world of chant. Barnes, also a Greek Orthodox chanter, has collaborated most recently with Philip Glass and Victoria Bond to create piano works based on ancient byzantine and Jewish chant. New chant-based works by Native flutist Ron Warren and David von Kampen were also given their premiere performances. Barnes gave the world premiere of Victoria Bond’s Illumination on Byzantine Chant at New York’s Symphony Space in April of 2021. Barnes released his fourteenth recording last fall on Albany Records entitled Illumination: The Piano Works of Victoria Bond including the world-premiere recording of Illuminations on Byzantine Chant. American Record Guide wrote "he sings with haunting musicality...and plays with fervid virtuosity...the music is calm and meditative, perfect for these troubled times."

Edna Golandsky is a world-renowned piano pedagogue and the leading exponent of the Taubman Approach. She has earned wide acclaim throughout the United States and abroad for her pedagogical expertise, and for using the Taubman piano technique. She is also known for her extraordinary ability to solve technical problems and for her penetrating musical insight.

​Ms. Golandsky started piano study in Israel at the age of eight. A gifted pianist, she played recitals at the age of ten and was performing with orchestras by the age of twelve. Ms. Golandsky came to the United States when she was sixteen years old, and was immediately accepted to the Juilliard School in their Preparatory Division.

She remained at Juilliard for the next eight years, studying with Jane Carlson, Rosina Lhevinne and Adele Marcus, and graduating with bachelor and master’s degrees in piano performance.

Zakary is a freshman at the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music, pursuing a major in Piano Performance under the direction of distinguished performer and teacher, Dr. Daniel Paul Horn. Zakary began his musical studies at age five in Chambersburg, PA at the Cumberland Valley School of Music with Susan Matson. Along with these studies, Zakary performed regularly, participating and competing in local competitions as a soloist and in state competitions as an accompanist. In 2020, Zakary placed third in the All-State Accompanist Competition and was awarded the opportunity to play alongside the All-State Orchestra of Pennsylvania. In March of 2021, Zakary and his colleague, Lauren Swain, placed first in the United States International Duo Piano Competition in Colorado Springs, CO. Outside of his piano studies, Zakary enjoys singing in the Men’s Glee Club, performing with the Symphonic Band, and playing the organ.

An active and versatile pianist, Daniel Paul Horn is Professor of Piano and Chair of Keyboard Studies at the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music, where he was honored with a 2009 Senior Academic Achievement Award for sustained excellence in scholarship. As solo recitalist, he has appeared at colleges and universities throughout North America, at the American Liszt Society Festival, and in live broadcasts over WFMT-FM, on its Pianoforte Foundation Fazioli Salon Series and its 2010 Beethoven Piano Sonata series. As concerto soloist, he has performed with various Midwestern orchestras, including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra; in 2015, he made his European orchestral debut with the Sarajevo Philharmonic, performing Lumen by Wheaton alumnus Jacob Bancks.

An avid chamber musician, he regularly collaborates with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. With the MasterWorks Ensemble, he has played in Bermuda and at the 2010 Beijing Modern Music Festival; in addition, he has performed with the Ying String Quartet, the Rembrandt Chamber Players, cellists Leonardo Altino and Stephen Balderston; pianists Alexander Djordjevic and Caroline Hong; and Guarneri Quartet violinist John Dalley. He also works with noted singers. Working with contemporary composers, he has premiered music by George Arasimowicz, Jacob Bancks, Delvyn Case, David M. Gordon, Neal Harnly, Patrick Kavanaugh, Daniel Kellogg, and Max Raimi. During the 2020-2021 season, he will give the world premiere of Seven Mysteries for solo piano, composed for him by Richard Danielpour through a commission made possible by a generous gift to Wheaton College.

As an early keyboardist, he was harpsichordist in performances of Handel’s Messiah under the baton of John Nelson, and has twice performed on the Historical Piano Concert series at the Frederick Collection in Ashburnham, Massachusetts. In 1997, he recorded the critically praised disc “Wanderings” for Titanic Records on an 1829 Graf fortepiano, and in 2010 released Sehnsucht: Music of Robert Schumann; he also recorded for the Centaur label with CSO cellist Donald Moline, for the Canadian Music Centre with soprano Carolyn Hart, and for the Innova label with flutist Jennie Oh Brown.

A Detroit native, Horn studied at Peabody with Walter Hautzig, and at Juilliard, where he studied with Martin Canin and Felix Galimir, and earned his doctorate. He has also coached with Jerome Lowenthal, Ann Schein, Joseph Bloch, Roy Howat, and Menahem Pressler, for whom he twice served as guest assistant at Indiana University. In addition to his duties at Wheaton, he has been a faculty artist at the Sewanee, Adamant, Blue Mountain, and MasterWorks summer festivals, and has served on the jury of the Chicago International Music Competition.

SUSAN KINDALL is known internationally as a performing member of three professional classical piano duos, numerous chamber groups, and as solo recitalist. In addition to a successful classical performance career, she has toured churches throughout the United States as sacred composer, arranger, solo pianist and soprano soloist. She holds the Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance and Pedagogy (4.0 average) from The University of Oklahoma. Her students are successful international piano competition laureates, doctoral graduates of leading conservatories, performing/recording artists, and published
composers and teachers who chair university music departments and direct ministries around the globe.

An expert in the musics of Richard Cumming, Andrzej Dutkiewicz, and Ronaldo Miranda, Dr. Kindall is a passionate advocate of the piano music of living composers. Her most recent world premiere, Ronaldo Miranda’s Festpielmüsik for Two Pianos & Percussion with members of the Greenville Symphony, is considered by the composer to be the definitive performance of that work to date.

Dr. Kindall is an official observer by invitation of the Hilton Head International Piano Competition, as well as the XVI International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland celebrating the 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth. She has accepted repeated invitations as National Group Discussion Leader at the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy Pre-Conference Seminar for Collegiate Piano Pedagogy Teachers in Chicago and has performed nationally at the Music Educators National Convention and Music Teachers National Association Conference. Dr. Kindall is currently a performing member of the Kindall-Nitsch Piano Duo with award-winning American pianist, Paul Nitsch.

Having nurtured musicians for over 35 years, Dr. Kindall has served on the staff of Interlochen Arts Camp, as a graduate teaching assistant at The University of Oklahoma, and taught on the artist faculties of Csehy Summer School of Music, Ouachita Baptist University, Ambassador Baptist College, and Bob Jones University—the latter where she installed of the Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy degree. As an MTNA Nationally Certified Teacher of Music, she founded and directed Majesty Music Academy bringing classical artistry to church musicians worldwide. Her numerous awards include Winner of the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association Graduate Piano Competition, the Gail Boyd deStwolinski Award for
outstanding service to The University of Oklahoma School of Music, and the President’s Club Partner Award for exceptional professional outreach at BJU.

Living true to one’s personal values is a basic element of success. Dr. Kindall loves people and remains dedicated to the success of her students. She is currently teaching exclusively online as Owner and CEO of Kindall Piano Studio, LLC.   1. Realize that You are the Product**

**The first step is to realize that you have many translatable skills to industry that you have developed over years or training. These skills and translatable qualities will always be with you throughout your creative career at every stage.

  1. Learn to share about your work in winsome ways and then do it.**

I have spoken on this podcast about the book by Austin Kleon ‘Show Your Work’. Part of the process of building your career is inviting people into your creative process. What does it take to learn a piece of music? What process do you go through to write a lyric?

  1. Build networks of people that are like minded

I am not advocating that we get into an echo chamber of our own thoughts but you have to get with people who have a growth mindset.

You have to start getting with people that are on the same track as you and talk with them. Over the pandemic, some of my dear friends and I created a mastermind where we share our ideas and make suggestions as to what and how we are doing things. It’s a fantastic group of creatives that are from a variety of industries but are musicians at heart.

Ladies and gentlemen - I have brought up things that have been critiqued, torn down and tested. The context of discussion is within a growth mindset.

In contrast, I have also brought up ideas with folks who love it at the time but then nothing is done. At some point when folks don’t listen or are negative in the context of ‘non-growth mindset’, you have to stop sharing with those folks. It’s a waste of time. Get with the people who are moving forward on purpose.

You have to find your people that are interested in entrepreneurship - the undertaking of building a prosperous creative career.

**And so - plug for our facebook group! Come and join us! Toward Creativity facebook group is becoming active yet again with questions. It’s a large mastermind in a way. Sharing ideas and helping each other build creative careers and endeavors.

  1. Build your online presence**

I really think the sharing of your work has to be in the online space. It’s where people are going to find out what others are doing. 60 percent of the world’s population is online - around 4 billion users. Of that, 91 percent of the folks access the internet through mobile devices. Friends, that 60 percent number is only going to increase. It will only increase. The estimate by 2030 is that 90 percent of folks from ages 6 and up will be online.

You need a website. You need to get with the program on social media to build your audience and following and point folks to your amazing work. How will they hear about you unless you show up on these platforms where the world is showing up?

Yes - I know - it can be a slogfest trying to build a creative career. The numbers can get you down and so I want to encourage you. You can do this. I can do this. The opportunity is there to build a sustainable and prosperous creative career - we have to, together, seize this opportunity and this moment in the history of the world where we can share ourselves and our work with the globe.

Sometimes you just need to get back to basics. As a creative, you need to get back to looking at why you began your creative journey, am I right? Even last night, while driving my oldest son to an event, I said, “I should just quit the piano.” He consoled me in the moment but I feel like this often. I think you might be thinking the same thing too in your creative work from time to time.

And are you also hearing the messages in entrepreneurship. So many folks in the entrepreneurship world say, “Pivot; Try this or that.”

I mean that’s one of the reasons why I have been changing the content and presentation of this podcast… OY! But, we are back to the main reason, and that is to help you as a creative to be inspired, encouraged and to give you the tools, tips and strategies to help you build a sustainable career. In this podcast, I am revisiting the core of the “why”.

Your “why” is so much more important than pivoting to meet the moving targets of the market.

Your “why” guides through the storms of emotions and thinking that often crash in when the going gets tough. For me, I have never been a prodigy, never or ever will be a genius. I just fell in love with the piano and desire to share music in the global community.

So maybe this episode will help you to get to your “why”.

By the way - this episode isn’t created in a vacuum. It is presented in the context of incredible pain worldwide especially for the country and people of Afghanistan and the earthquake that just crushed the country of Haiti.

We need to understand our “why” as individuals in our own personal journey. With your “why”, I am assuming that it is for the benefit of others - love of neighbor. And, if we focus our “why” for the benefit of society we can make the world a better place.

I quote the great American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein: “This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before."

Sometimes we feel so helpless with the suffering in the world. But, I know that if my “why” is figured out and I pursue that - I can benefit my life, my family's lives, and my community which includes the globe. We can do what we can in our own part of the world and life.

And storms come. My personal friends know that in my personal journey in playing the piano I have had massive calamity and storms. They come and we need to anchor into why. Through therapy, I am finally able to jump into the piano afresh like I did as a teenager.

In this episode, I am going to outline three areas where you can make money through your creative work right now.

The three areas are as follows:

  1. Affiliate Marketing (blogging, and promotion on social media)
  2. Services and Products (you need a website where you can sell things)
  3. Social Media Following (so many ways to make money here)

In all of these areas if you have an open mind to them - again, in other episodes we will talk about the need for a mindset shift among musicians, artists and creatives - but, if you have an open mind to these ideas, you can apply all of the transcendent values and virtues that you have worked on as an artist - capacity to learn new things, discipline, focus, training for hours and hours, problem solving, perseverance, etc. - you can take these virtues and apply them to these areas and do very well.
