Chatting end of April 2022 with Chris Barron and Sam Raion, discussing the pilot of the mentoring & Supported Work Scheme by Chris, for Fresh SCIO.

We hope this could be a viable option for future people, after this test of change. This would be open to those who fit the criteria, following completing standard volunteering induction of 3 months with us.

This is especially important for our neighbourhood, due to current SIMD and LOIP goals.

Well it has been a long time coming. After a heavy year, since Sept 2021 I have struggled to do my usual early morning walks, along with every day tasks, conversations, replying to people, making appointments and more.
6 months of darkness - so here is our weekly show for Shmu FM, describing this and the first steps - phew I have been needing it.
Don't expect something from Dante, it would be a divine comedy in comparison. Just some tunes, community news and live feed of my hobble back to my wellness journey.

This is our second episode with another in production. This actually started as usual, as a goal of a 60 secs message about the origins of the charity for something else - but evolved as things do.  It fits better into an intro to Sam, for the This is our Reality series, and addresses a few things.

Please note this is a slightly graphic look at things, but part of my (Sam) commitment to visible recovery and ongoing wellness goals.

Not a life story, just  a short part.

Looking at #mentalhealth #crime #prison #physicalhealth #disability #suicide #overdose #recovery and benefits of being #visible, sharing #honesty #neurodivergence #livedexperience and #livingexperiences in the hope of reaching others.

P.E.E.R.S M.A.T.T.A - upcoming drop-in session

P.E.E.R.SPeer-led Engaging Entertaining Residents Safe-space.

M.A.T.T.AMedically Assisted Treatments Therapies Affected (by alcohol, drugs and/ or in recovery)

This group will be led by lived experience, encouraging those affected by, or in recovery from alcohol/ drugs, to engage in a safe-space confidential environment. As well as helping those with low mental health, traumas, any other complex needs which may not be currently met. Looking to see how we, as a community, can help them. No judgements. Safe choices motivation. People helping people. Looking at safe motivations. Embrace alternative & holistic options to compliment, and perhaps eventually replace current medical methods.

  • Non-judgemental safe space for all
  • Refreshments
  • Motivating toward safe choices, increasing access to digital devices/ internet
  • Ability to make referrals on behalf of service users when required to local groups & services

This is a great way to come together as a community, within the community, ensuring privacy and peace. We are also happy to offer individuals walk & talks, or 1 to 1 outside activities, allowing those who wish to start slowly to begin individually.

Operating in full synergy with local groups & services, we are happy to welcome any groups in to present, or describe their services, as and when the group wishes to see them. The emphasis is on a safe space, where people can build on things in their own time. Whilst having their own space, offering free cuppa and refreshments!

S.P.O.R.T.SSeaton neighbourhoods | Partners | Opportunities | Residents Recreation | Training | Sports for free

Making use of outside spaces for football, activity sessions, playdays, sports & fitness, dancing and working alongside other groups, services & professional bodies to improve everyone’s health, wellbeing & community wellness

Encouraging outdoor sports and activities, for free, for the whole community. With progression towards a hope, funding dependant, of creating outdoor free areas for health and fitness. With an initial application for a young adults/ adults multi activity bars gym set up. Long term goals to build an entire outdoor gym area. 2021 free outdoor sports sessions were for 10 years upwards and a huge success. So we aim to expand on that, subject to funding ability, as soon as we can.

  • Working alongside local groups such as STAR community flat, Aberdeen Gurudwara, Residents groups and more
  • Creating opportunities with local areas such as Pittodrie & Tillydrone to offer free activities and choices for the whole community
  • Utilising contacts and advise from the Physical Activity Huddle working group, Aberdeen City Health & Social Care Partnership, and others to ensure we can offer access to the best knowledge & advice.
  • Suitable for all age groups, and adaptable to all abilities
  • Also aiming to provide access for Physio, Yoga and gentle seated sessions
  • Chair Zumba
  • Working with local students, such as Robert Gordon’s University, for community experience and bridging age barriers.

Feel free to get in touch with us email: chair@freshcom.org.uk

Talking Regenerating Activity Inclusion Linksfield Seaton – starting with our gentle walk around the local area, we embrace community ideas & engagement, every week. This will expand on to developing active travel routes, and walks for different abilities as well, partnered with Paths For All.

  • Enabling active travel throughout the whole area with improved accessibility for all.
  • Connecting local groups & organisations, with local areas such as the beach, estuary and the nature reserve.
  • Building on a 20-minute neighbourhood model, as a way to combat climate change, and also to unite communities.
  • Creating the ‘Seaton neighbourhoods’ trail, will also raise the profile of incredible groups, individuals and community options, which many are not aware of presently
  • Allowing the progress of these improvements, and the trails, to highlight historical features and ensure these live on long into the future
  • As part of our work with Robert Gordon’s University, toward a salutogenic placemaking & co design approach, the trails encourage residents & guests to embrace future possibilities, providing evidence for any potential future funding applications and developments.
  • The trails project also has an emphasis on activity, highlighting the importance of this, alongside any current advised weekly activity sessions.
  • The community feel, encourages the opening of further local amenities and free outside opportunities, which are not presently available, but can easily become available.

The benefits of walks are plentiful. Not only being able to see the wonderful Seaton neighbourhoods, but getting out to visit other places too. All our walks are led by trained walk leaders, we are always looking for more, with free training available.

Regenerations of Seaton neighbourhoods
As mentioned part of TRAILS, is looking at potential areas for regeneration. We have currently 2 corner pocket regenerations, and are always on the look out for more! Also will be increased signage throughout, to and from the neighbourhood to increase awareness of that is on offer!

  • School road/ Seaton Avenue corner pocket garden – This is in association with Aberdeen Gurudwara, working with them to create something for all of the community to enjoy. We hope this is the start to many other partnerships within the community, to work towards a common goal of improve community wellness and quality of life for all.
  • Seaton Totem Pole corner pocket garden – This one is with the whole community. Fresh have started tidying it up and making it safe. With essential safety measures taken by professional authorities, to ensure community safety. We are working with RGU, to look at placemaking & co design, where the Totem Pole is the heart of their research & design creation.

Additionally we are also now developing both the SNUG community garden, as well as a garden area for the Bon Accord Care supported living blocks nearby. All of this came through discussions and ideas presented at the TRAILS sessions, we call them WalkIn4Change! Come and be a part of the change.

N.E.S.T

Neighbourhood Environmental Safety Team, open to all community project to reduce litter, protect greenspaces, highlight safety concerns so that these can be addressed.

FRESH SCIO’s N.E.S.T has been running right through 2021. Although we didn’t begin until May, we managed to clear in excess of 3 tonnes of rubbish, waste & hazardous items by Dec.

We also updated the council on possible areas of danger to people, as well as letting them know about playpark damages, fly tipping, graffiti and much more.

Fun, free with a friendly team too!

This year we are looking to do more. Host events around certain areas, whilst encouraging the residents there to participate. We are keen to utilise tidy up sessions as a resource for helping people socialise safely, outside, taking pride in their area.

We aim to invite in experts to discuss recycling ideas, litter prevention strategies, motivation/ reasons behind littering. Recycling, reducing, reusing tips. Arts & crafts using items which may have been previously thrown out. Upcycling furniture, clothes and more!

Look at the possibility of collecting fly tipped & other items, upcycling them to use in our community garden, or to possibly sell on to help fund our charitable activities.

When possible we will have refreshments such as teas, coffees, snacks. We will have guests welcomed along from all over Aberdeen – supporting climate change, the environment, community & climate week north east 2022.

A.R.T = Art for Seaton, Residents Recognition, Training & Techniques, FRESH STREET ART & DESIGN

Street Art & Design – Initial funding applied for, would be to reach the 12-18years age range. This is an excellent opportunity to express themselves, in a safe community activity, but also to feel a part of your community. Learning these skills, and taking part in community activities not only increases self worth, but helps the whole community improve. These will continue to develop with mid to long term phases, engaging the whole community.

  • Underpass tidy-up and Street Art (Seaton Crescent)
  • Possibility of work on the beach underpass into Seaton
  • Sculptures bringing in local & national artists/ designers, with goals to create pieces and reusing, upcycling or recycling materials which may otherwise have been discarded
  • Enable flow through all parts of the local neighbourhood, enabling inclusion, whilst still acknowledging local history & points of interest.

We would like to link up with local groups & artists such as:

  • Nuart
  • V2K_art
  • Shmu

We look at why we are forming a lived experience led peer drop-in session for Seaton Neighbourhoods. Including Linksfield & surrounding areas.

Including some of the things experienced from my point of view and experience (Sam), as well as utilising the consultations and input from community members throughout the past year.

Times where they feel ostracised, a burden, have low self esteem, are not getting positive encouragement or motivation to address actual needs, but a focus instead being on behaviours.

Feelings of not being a part of their own neighbourhood, and how 20-minute neighbourhoods should be offering these things. At all times in conjunction with expert services, but predominantly to offer a safe drop-in space, for confidential chat, will like-minded non-judgemental people. With options in the future, when the group is ready to invite in local services, guest speakers and perhaps even expand into assisting with our wellness activities.

At all times concentrating on improving health, mental, physical & emotional. Improving community cohesion, understanding & wellness

Email us if you want to say something about this, or any other topic. chair@freshcom.org.uk

For Year of Stories 2022 I reflect upon 2016/2017, which were my 2 main suicide attempts, the latter resulting in overdose, sepsis, discitis, DVT's and full pulmonary embolism, 3 months hospital. Now in my 5th year recovering with community involvement & wellness. I was easing out of a global field engineer role, following a final placement in Egypt.

I ask what it may have been like if there were opportunities in the neighbourhood, looking at a 20minute model. Which not only encourages active travel, but has amenities, free activities, refreshments, drop-ins, health & social service, volunteering and then employability options.

During those time we only visited the city to beg for money for drugs, shoplift for drugs, then get a food parcel. But I hope we (FRESH) can now offer options in the community, allowing early engagement, well before it leads to suicides, attempts, overdoses/ non-fatal or DRD's.

Not suggesting this replaces the city food initiatives or services for free - but at that time I knew many people in a similar situation. All of whom who had their own properties, or multiple occupancies spaces/ sofa surfing. Yes homeless - but none rough sleepers, and no one who would choose to go to town, were there opportunities within their own neighbourhoods. Many fatalities occurred due to the journey being too far, or due to poor mental health/ psychosis or social awkwardness.

Would love to hear your thoughts, many thanks (sam) Chair, lived experience (34 years) in 5th year of recovery, since turning life into community engagement, nature, people helping people and embracing saultogenic approach to health & wellness. Things continue to improve.

FitFunAbz is delighted to present this podcast for Fresh Community Wellness SCIO. Based in a priority neighbourhood, looking at what has been done, is in the process of being done and what is coming up. Initially reaching out to residents, volunteers & groups in Seaton, Linksfield & Pittodrie this was an exciting chance to speak to local experts, residents and incorporating lived/living experience too.
