Erick Morales is one of the founders and organizers of the Devil's Elbow Invitational, a new Mid-Am event in the Dominican Republic that grants the winner an exemption to the Corales Punta Cana PGA Tour event. Morales is a decorated amateur himself, having finished second in the inaugural Mexico Mid-Am last year, and he recently played in the US Mid-Am at Sleepy Hollow.
In addition, he has played in PGA Tour events and made the cut in one of them. The best man in Morales' wedding was Rafa Campos, who recently benefited from the Shad Tuten penalty. Campos moved up and secured the 30th and final tour card after Tuten’s penalty dropped him back to 32nd in the rankings. Morales talks about caddying for Campos when he finished in second place to Joel Dahmen in 2021 and why he decided not to hop on Campos’ bag full-time. Erick and I played a round of golf together far from his home in Puerto Rico in early October.

Stewart Hagestad is one of the most decorated amateurs of this generation. He's competed in dozens of USGA events and has won 2 U.S. Mid-Amateur championships (2016 and 2021). He's also competed in six professional majors. His best finish was a T36 in the 2017 Masters, where he earned low amateur honors.
The 32-year-old from Newport Beach, California will compete in his fourth straight Walker Cup, an incredible achievement that puts him into the same category as Bobby Jones, Francis Ouimet, and Jay Sigel as players who have competed in that many Walker Cups. It's likely, given the youth of the team, that Hagestad might be one of the last to record such a resume in the team event.

He’s in the real world, working, traveling, and battling injuries, but he still plays golf at a high level. He qualified for his sixth US Amateur championship this summer. Mike McCoy’s resume would take too long to read through in its entirety. The Iowa Golf Hall of Famer has played in more than 60 USGA events. In his 38th USGA appearance, McCoy won the 2013 US Mid-Am, which opened a plethora of doors for the already decorated golfer. He played in The Masters and was also named to the 2015 Walker Cup team. McCoy’s excellence across many decades earned him the honor of captaining the 2023 Walker Cup team. Jeronimo Esteve recently won the 2023 Coleman, it was, in his words, “his biggest victory” and he joined us to share his thoughts on the event. He gives some incredible descriptions of holes and shots at Seminole that made my palms sweat.
Over the years, Esteve’s name has been at or near the top of some elite amateur leaderboards. From the Gasparilla to the Crump Cup to the U.S. Mid-Am and The Coleman, he enjoys the competition and gives some excellent insight into his mindset as he came down the stretch at Seminole battling Stewart Hagestad and Evan Beck. Heather Daly-Donofrio’s role as the USGA Managing Director for Player Relations and Development has kept her quite busy over the last year. She has spearheaded the creation of the USGA’s National Player Development. A program that many felt was a long time coming. After research and discussions with people around the world, Daly-Donofrio and her team rolled out their plan this winter. Daly-Donofrio is a perfect fit for this job, as she started playing the game at 15 and managed to find her way to college at Yale and then played on the LPGA Tour. She has an understanding of the challenges of finding a pathway as a junior golfer, especially having started the game a little on the late side for someone that did play professionally.
Daly-Donofrio speaks about the process for rolling out this program, the challenges and the benefits. It’s all very new and very fluid, and it’s exciting to imagine how the program grows over the next 5-10 years as players make their way into and through the program.

Meghan Stasi is the youngest individual ever inducted into the Florida State Golf Association (FSGA) Hall of Fame. To date, she has won 17 FSGA titles, including two Florida Women’s Amateurs and five Florida Women’s Mid-Amateurs. Stasi is an eight-time FSGA Player of the Year. On top of that, she competed in the 2008 Curtis Cup at St. Andrews and has won four U.S. Women’s Mid-am championships from 2006-2012.
Next year, she will captain the Curtis Cup team in England when the event is held at Sunningdale. Stasi talks about how she got into the game, her college experience, the choice to remain an amateur and coach college golf at Ole Miss, and her incredible memories from the 2008 Curtis Cup. Scotland holds a very special place in Stasi’s heart, and she explains that it’s more than just because of the golf. We wrap up talking about Stasi's responsibilities as Curtis Cup captain.

Ellen Port is one of the most decorated golfers of any generation. She’s won seven USGA events, an accomplishment that puts her in the stratosphere of nine-time USGA winners Bobby Jones and Tiger Woods. Jack Nicklaus and JoAnne Gunderson Carner have eight.
However, Port’s journey is different than the other golfers on the list. She began playing golf seriously in her mid-20s when she grabbed an old pair of her dad’s Wilson blades before heading to St. Louis for a teaching job. She was hooked. In a staggering eight years, Port had secured a spot on the Curtis Cup Team in 1994. She also played in 1996 and captain the team in her home state of Missouri in 2014. Port isn’t done yet, she’s hoping to win an 8th USGA event, which would give her a title in four different decades.
Port isn’t just a national champion. She had dominated the Missouri golf scene. She’s in the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame, and Missouri Golf Association Hall of Fame. She won the Metropolitan Amateur Champion 16 times and also won the men’s Metropolitan Senior Amateur Championship in 2022.
We talk about her love of the game and her mentality on the course. She picks out a few highlights from her USGA championships and tells an incredible story about the wildlife in Alaska during the 2022 US Women’s Senior Am. She talks about her Curtis Cup experience as a player and captain and gives us a few things she’s feeling good about for the future of women’s amateur golf.

If you were a 1990s golf fan, you recognize John Ashworth’s last name. His apparel company, Ashworth, adorned some of the best players in the world: Fred Couple, John Cook, and Ernie Els. Over the years, John Ashworth has had his hand in a lot of different projects and companies, all of them connected to the game he loves. Lawrence Donegan might be one of the most interesting men in golf. His journey to Founding Editor of McKellar magazine started as a bassist for two popular Scottish rock bands in the 1980s. He went to journalism school, authored five books, and secured his dream job as the golf correspondent for the Guardian.
Donegan tells some great stories about life on the road in a band. We also talk about how he ended up writing his first book "Four Iron in the Soul" where he caddied for Ross Drummond for a season on the European Tour. Donegan’s son just committed to play golf at Northwestern. We discuss Donegan’s experience as the father of a junior golfer and get into the challenges young players and their families face to play at the top level of junior golf in America.

Dana Dormann keeps finding herself back at San Jose State. After an illustrious playing career at San Jose State where she won the 1987 national team championship and the Pacific Coast Athletic Association Player of the Year award, she helped the Spartans win another national championship in 1989 as an assistant coach. Dormann enjoyed success on the LPGA Tour. But San Jose State’s siren song was strong, she joined the coaching staff as an assistant to her husband, John. The program had fallen on hard times, but in the last five years, under her leadership as head coach, the program has turned around and is winning events and competing with power 5 schools regularly.
We talk about life as a college golf coach, how she runs practices, and how the game has changed. She also shares a bit about her background and her pact with two boys in her neighborhood to earn college golf scholarships. Finally, Dormann tells a great story about her first LPGA Tour event and how it not only launched her on the right path but also her husband’s as a tour caddy for a different golfer.

Matt McClean has been a staple in Irish amateur golf over the last few years. He’s collected a number of impressive finishes in events in Ireland and the UK. In 2022 he had runner-up finishes in the North of Ireland Amateur Open and the Irish Amateur Open. He also reached the final 16 of the British Amateur, too.
In his first competition in the United States, McClean broke through and won the US MidAm. He adds his name to a short, but distinguished list of Irishmen who have won a USGA event: Padriag Harrington, Rory McIlroy, and Graeme McDowell are the others. His final match was against fellow Irishman, friend, teammate, and travel companion Hugh Foley.
We dive into the week at Erin Hills, McClean’s busy golf schedule, his upcoming 2023 schedule which includes two majors, and his rise through the amateur ranks and competing for team Ireland the last few years.

Stephen Proctor has been at the forefront of bringing the history of golf back into modern-day golf discussion. The former newspaper editor at the San Francisco Chronicle and Baltimore Sun has turned his passion for storytelling into two excellent golf books that would be great gifts for a golf lover in your life. “Monarch of the Green” details Young Tom Morris’ life as the golf’s first superstar.
Most recently, the Long Golden Afternoon dives into how the game grew beyond the borders of Scotland in the late 19th century. For the sake of this podcast, The Long Golden Afternoon highlights how the amateur game exploded due to the skill of players like Englishman John Ball who won rocked the professionals when he conquered the the 1890 Open Championship as an amateur and began a rivalry between Scotland and England.
During the podcast, Proctor picks the three amateur moments he would have wanted to be present for while he also tells interesting stories about his time on the Old Tom Morris Trail this summer and offers his immense knowledge of the amateur game from the late 19th century.

Andrew von Lossow has dabbled in every part of golf possible - playing, caddying, logo design, lead tape, hickory golf. He does all of them very well. For me, Von Lossow came onto the scene at Ridgewood Country Club when he beat Michael Thorbjornsen in the U.S. Amateur. He grew up the son of a tour pro, Jim Von Lossow, who then became a club maker. Along with his dad, Andrew took to the hickory game in 2013 and ended up winning the 2021 US Hickory Open. Most recently, Von Lossow won the Washington Golf Association Men’s Player of the Year AND the men’s Mid-Am player of the year. He was also named the Pacific Northwest Mid-Am player of the year.

Scott Harvey and Kevin Marsh are legends in amateur amateur golfer. Both have won the US MidAm, Harvey in 2014 and Marsh in 2005.
Today’s podcast is about an event that Marsh and Harvey played a huge part in getting off the ground. The East West Cup is an amateur team event that started in 2020. It brings together senior amateurs, MidAms, and college golfers from both sides of the Mississippi to compete for bragging rights and a bit of glory. More importantly, Harvey and Marsh see it as a celebration of golf and an avenue to bridge the generations. The second edition will be played in November 2022 at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, TX just north of Dallas.

Maxwell Moldovan has had an incredibly busy and fulfilling summer. He qualified for the U.S. Open which launched a stretch of golf that sent him from Ohio to Boston to three elite amateur events: The Northeast Amateur, The North & South Amateur, and the Southern Amateur. He also just won the Stark County Amateur Championship for the third time in four years . He dominated the event at his home course by 11 shots. In a practice round, Moldovan broke the course record at Prestwick Country Club with a 61, and that was after a morning round of 62.
During our discussion, Moldovan brings us into his thought process down the stretch at his U.S. Open qualifier at Springfield CC, what he learned about himself competing in a professional major championship in Boston, how he has learned to battle and keep fighting, what it was like defending his title at the Southern Am, and why he chose Ohio State to play his college golf.

Jensen Castle burst onto the golfing scene last summer when she won the US Women’s Amateur. Since then she has played in two US Women’s Opens. First at Olympic Club and this week at Pine Needles. She competed in the 2021 Curtis Cup and was selected for the 2022 competition at Merion this June. If that wasn’t enough, Castle also competed in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. It’s been an incredible year for Castle. Brendan Walsh has been the head pro at The Country Club for the last 25 years. He came to Brookline in 1998 from Patterson Club in Fairfield, CT where he served as the head pro for seven years. Brendan has been described as generous and outgoing. It’s hard to disagree. There are myriad pros throughout the country that have come through The Country Club under Walsh’s mentorship.

Aaron Jarvis is a self described grinder. His victory at Teeth of the Dog this past January in the Latin America Am was a perfect example of his toughness on the course. He finished his round with a flurry of excellent shots and watched as the final groups came through 18. When all was said and done, he won and had an invite to The Masters.
Jarvis is the first golfer to represent the Cayman Islands at the Masters, an island of 65,000 in the Caribbean will have it’s eyes on one of its own at Augusta National. I was lucky enough to speak with Aaron on Tuesday from Augusta. We talk about his preparation, playing with major winners in practice rounds, the amateur dinner, and meeting Tiger Woods.

Beverly Bell is the author of “The Murder of Marion Miley.” In 2020 the book was a finalist for the USGA Herbert Warren Wind book award.
The story itself was lost in history, as Miley’s murder was washed from the front pages when Pearl Harbor was attacked and World War II stole everyone’s attention. Miley was an exceptional amateur golfer. From 1931 to the murder in 1941, she won 20 amateur events including the Kentucky Amateur seven times in eight years.
Women’s amateur golf in the 1930s filled a void left by Bobby Jones. Players like Patty Berg and Babe Didrikson battled Miley for supremacy on the course and they garnered attention and headlines for their play and style. Miley’s fame put her into the stratosphere of Bing Crosby, who it is believed put up an award for capturing the men who killed Marion and her mother on that fateful night in September 1941.
During our discussion. Beverly Bell and I speak about how she found the story, the research that went into writing the book, anecdotes and stories that she had to leave out, and we even do a little Hollywood casting in case this incredible story ever makes it to the big screen.
This discussion with Bell feels quite timely given the Augusta National Women’s Amateur is being held this week. A celebration of women’s amateur golf, something that Marion Miley brought to the forefront during a dominant decade competition both in the United States and abroad in Great Britain. ___________

Rachel Heck’s golfing life moves fast. Since recording this podcast she has collected her eighth individual title and her Stanford team shot a record-breaking 50-under par at the Gunrock Invitational.
Heck has ascended to the very top of college and amateur golf, however, her story stretches beyond the golf course. She is enrolled in the Air Force’s ROTC program (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) at San Jose State. She details how she balances competitive golf with the ROTC program and how ROTC helps her on the golf course. Heck is also an artist, we talk about her love of painting and how it calms her and on and off the golf course. She has an Instagram handle "Raindelayz". Go give it a follow to see her art.
On March 30th, Heck will tee it up in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur for the second year in a row. She finished in second place last year. Billy Mitchell has played golf all over the world. He spent the bulk of his 20s playing on mini-tours in Australia, Asia, and Canada from 1985-1995. After ten years away from the game where he focused on his family and building a training business, Billy returned to golf in 2005 and has enjoyed a lot of success, playing in 17 USGA event. Peter O’Keeffe is an amateur golfer from Ireland. In 2021 he became the first player in 26 years to win the Irish Amateur Close and Irish Amateur Open championships in the same year. The last player to do that was a young Padraig Harrington.
O’Keeffe’s experience in the game is wide ranging. He played his college golf in Louisiana. After graduating he returned to Europe and battled on the Challenge Tour before returning to the amateur ranks. O’Keeffe’s outlook on the game has shifted over the years, and he drops nuggets of wisdom throughout our discussion both on the mental and physical side of the game. Since returning to amateur golf, O’Keeffe has built an online fitness presence, helping golfers of all ages and abilities play their best golf while getting stronger for a healthy life off the course, too.

For the last 17 years, he has been the Resident Sports Psychologist for Leadbetter Golf Academy World Teaching Headquarters at Champions Gate, Florida, working with some of the best golfers in the world.
Dr. Bob also made an appearance in Tom Coyne’s book "Paper Tiger." Coyne worked with Dr. Bob while he tried to turn himself into a pro golfer.
Dr. Bob joins me to talk about his experience competing as a golfer and the epiphany he had when he realized he wanted to get into the mental side of the game and help make other players better.

Ludvig Aberg was named AmateurGolf.com’s 2021 player of the year. The Texas Tech junior has a long list of accolades. He was a 2021 PING All-American, a GCAA All-American scholar, All-Big 12 First Team, and a Haskins Award finalist.
During our chat, Ludvig talks about growing up and learning the game in Sweden, the choice to attend college in the United States (and Texas Tech in particular), his interrupted freshman year due to CoVID, and more. Ludvig has won amateur events like the Jones Cup in February 2021, but he has also won 2 pro events and competed in the RSM Classic on the PGA TOUR.
