Ethan’s guide, Tiny House Decisions, has helped thousands of readers answer the big questions about tiny houses and plan each system in their future home.

He’s also the creator and host of the Tiny House Lifestyle Podcast, a show that brings you conversations with tiny house luminaries, builders, and DIYers.

In this conversation, we talk about:

  • How Ethan’s situation changed from living long-term in his DIY tiny home to turning it into an Airbnb
  • The arrangement that Ethan has with the landowner where his tiny house Airbnb is parked
  • The composting toilet situation and how it has worked out so far

059 - Is dating challenging when living in a tiny home? What are some of the realities of tiny house living? What's it REALLY like?

From personal experience, it's amazing in so many ways (most of the time). However, it's not always rainbows and butterflies - there are plenty of interesting, and sometimes challenging or inconvenient realities that you only get to discover when living in a tiny home.

Marie Beringer is a tiny houser originally from France, and is living in Auckland, New Zealand. Marie built her tiny house 5 years ago and loved it so much that she changed her career and recently became a fully qualified carpenter.

She’s currently building a shepherd hut with her best friend and documenting every step on her YouTube channel, giving building tips and sharing the failures as well.

The goal is for people to see that woodwork/building is not that hard and everyone can give it a crack.

Marie was on the show back in episode 24 and her DIY story is inspiring. I’ve asked her to come back on the show for some real talk, and share more about her experiences with some of the realities of tiny house living.

In this conversation, we talk about:

  • Realities of living in a small space
  • What it’s REALLY like to manage your resources, like power, water, and toilets
  • Challenges when it comes to growing food
  • Dating when living in a tiny home
  • All about Marie’s creative building projects… and lots more.

057- Today we're talking all about composting toilet experiences of the Nature Loo 650 with Anthony Hill, a tiny houser based in the Northern Rivers of NSW (Bundjalung Country). He grew up in the coastal town of Coffs Harbour and spent nearly half his life traveling and living overseas.

It was here that he became engaged in environmental and social issues joining discussion groups, running events, and producing a radio show with a friend. His interest in alternative living and food growing became quite an obsession and he dreamed of, one day, living off-grid back home in Australia.

Anthony was on the show back in episode 13 with his partner Kirra, sharing all about their tiny house journey. I’ve invited Anthony back this time to chat about their experiences with using the Nature Loo 650 composting toilet.

In this conversation, we talk about:

  • The main reasons for choosing a composting toilet
  • How the Nature Loo 650 works
  • All about emptying, cleaning, smell, and ventilation
  • The importance of understanding the Microbiome and having a “right relationship” with nature
  • Some lessons from using a composting toilet
  • Advice for tiny housers looking into which tiny toilet option is right for them… and lots more.

You've been asking me for months...

"Hey Lucy, when are you doing Season 2 of the podcast?"

Well, the suspense is almost over!

After taking a good chunk of last year off to simply LIVE and be present in my first year of tiny life, it felt important for me to take space and be immersed in it for myself, without capturing everything on camera to share as content for the show and beyond.

Now that I've well and truly settled into this lifestyle, I'll be sharing more of my experiences and journey with you next year on the pod, as well as here and other social channels.

There are some big life changes on the horizon in Tiny land for me next year, and part of that means I'll be back behind the mic bringing you more awesome Tiny House Conversations!

You'll get to hear from more Tiny House builders, some of your familiar favourites in the Aussie tiny house space, some new and old fave Tiny Housers, other experts, and of course, yours truly, sharing more about what's happening in my own Tiny life...

...so you can soak up all that tiny goodness, insights, tips, stories, experiences, mistakes, mishaps, and more, to help you along the way on your Tiny path.

If you're a Tiny Houser, Tiny Builder, or other business with relevant experience, products, or services that align with the Tiny House lifestyle and would be of interest + value to the Tiny community, and you'd love to join me on the show, DM me or...

Head to www.tinyhouseconversations.com/story and share your details there.

Plus, stay tuned early next year for some more exciting announcements about where my tiny journey is headed next, so I can take you along for the ride. This may or may not involve another tiny house!

053 - Brendan Woodley and Bayden Stinson are the Co-Founders of the tiny building company, Removed Tiny Homes, based in Brisbane, QLD.

In order to demonstrate a different way of life that is more environmentally conscious and sustainable, Removed was established.

Removed Tiny Homes accomplish this by building high-quality, off-grid tiny homes with architectural designs. They support the tiny house movement because they think everyone should have the chance to own a home, and they do it by providing a variety of reasonably priced and environmentally-friendly solutions.

They are constantly exploring for ways to enhance their production processes and lessen waste output, energy usage, and home-related environmental damage.

I asked Brendan and Bayden to join me on the show as I've been looking for tiny house builders who focus on building healthy tiny homes and doing it properly.

In this conversation we talk about:

  • The 4 key pillars that Removed focus on - Low tox building materials, sustainable construction, off-grid innovations and carbon-neutral supply chain
  • The methods they use to minimise moisture and mould
  • The methods they use to reduce electromagnetic fields in your tiny home
  • The different tiny house models they offer and their mission to make a positive impact in the tiny house space and affordable housing industry… and more!

Fred educates DIY builders and professionals alike on how to build safe tiny house vehicles through his online course and face-to-face workshops. He also makes highly engineered tiny house trailers that are perfect for building a tiny house on, featuring the strongest attachment method available between the tiny house and the trailer.

If he’s not supporting trailer clients in his tiny house office, he’ll be on the tools or working in the garden at his home in Castlemaine.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • The shifts Fred has observed in the tiny house space over the years and where he thinks we’re headed
  • The importance of constructing a long-lasting, safe & thermally well-performing tiny house on wheels /tiny house vehicle
  • Why building to the Building Code of Australia or the National Construction Code doesn’t necessarily make a safe tiny house vehicle
  • Some consequences of building over the weight limit of a trailer (4.5T)
  • All about the Unified Construction Method®, Fred’s Tiny Trailers & Tiny House University….and more!

040 - Zara D’Cotta is a Building Biology New Build Consultant, Keynote Speaker & Founder of The Healthy Home. She discovered her passion for environmental health after going through cancer. Through her own experiences with environmental illness, including four years on the move from one ‘unhealthy’ home to the next, and extensive research, Zara realised unhealthy homes are making us sick. She has been on a mission to help families make informed choices ever since.

After experiencing mould symptoms in more homes than she could count, Zara woke up after her first night in a newly built home with stinging eyes, and experienced other symptoms during her first months in her new home. It was at this point she realised new builds can contribute to health problems too, and decided to learn all she could about home design and building materials so she can one day build her own healthy home, and play what part she can in changing the way homes are designed and built.

Zara has spent the past three years studying Building Biology, with a specific focus on healthy home design and building materials, in Australia and the USA.

In this conversation we talk about:

  • Different chemicals contained in building materials and how they can be detrimental to health
  • How to determine whether a building material is safe to use when it comes to the impacts on your health and the environment
  • Why reclaimed and recycled building materials are not always the “healthiest” choice
  • The limitations with the building codes when it comes to building materials and health
  • How to reduce exposure to chemicals and “off-gassing” in your tiny home… and more!

038 - Mieke and Tom Lashford are tiny housers based in the Noosa Hinterland in Queensland. 033 - Grant Emans is the founder of Designer Eco Tiny Homes, based in Ulladulla on the South Coast of NSW. If you’ve been listening to the show for a while, you’ll know that Designer Eco are building my own tiny home!

In this conversation we talk about:

  • Grant’s story and background in the construction industry and how he came to specialise in tiny house builds
  • The shifts Grant has seen in the tiny house world from when he started building tiny homes and what’s currently present in the industry today
  • For DIY tiny house builders - some options that Designer Eco offers, including trailers and shells to lock up
  • All about solar trailers and the benefits compared to solar panels on your tiny house roof
  • The tiny house models Designer Eco build and the process to work with them… and more!

About Grant Emans

"Back in 2000 I began my journey in the construction industry. Along with my brother, I formed a building company, and together for over 10 years, worked on all types of building projects. These included residential homes, renovations, child care centres, office fit-outs, and home maintenance. During this time I felt a strong need to drive change in the industry as many of the architect and draftsmen designed homes, along with traditional building practices were not sustainable.

In 2010, we began a new construction business called Designer Eco Homes. We offered design and construction package that specialised in environmental sustainability. For over 5 years we created these homes which saw incredible change in the way we constructed homes for a more sustainable future. But so much more can be done. And that’s what led to the idea of tiny homes.

Based on the Tiny House Movement in the USA, 2016 brought a new era for me in design and construction. I ceased building regular homes with my brother and now focus primarily on the construction of tiny homes. These are incredible structures and offer the homeowner a highly sustainable option for housing. They are energy efficient, eco-friendly and affordable.

The versatility of a tiny home, along with their affordability allows me to create environmentally sustainable building solutions for a wider range of people. With modern transportation, I can now offer these incredible housing solutions for the whole of Australia, and even beyond.

Designer Eco Tiny Homes is founded on trust, reliability and a proven track record. I understand the importance of what a home means to people. It’s not just a building, it encompasses so much more than that. Our traditional values, combined with the latest construction techniques and technologies, ensure that our clients will receive the highest quality finish achievable."

032 - What are electromagnetic fields (EMFs), why should you care, how can they affect your health and how can you minimise exposure in your tiny home?

These are just some of the questions we answer in today’s episode with my returning guest Amie Skilton.

Amie is a Naturopath, Nutritionist, Herbalist, Certified Mould Technician and is currently completing her studies as an EMF Testing Technician.

As a former Functional Medicine Practitioner of 18 years, Amie’s view of root-cause medicine was forever altered as a result of an environmentally acquired illness.

In 2017, after developing Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) herself, she discovered the world of building biology and the various ways in which the built environment has a profound impact on human health. She realised her naturopathic, nutritional and herbal toolkit were only as useful as her environment was healthy.

She’s now on a mission to raise awareness of a commonly overlooked but monumentally significant influence on health and wellbeing.

Just like we discussed with Amie in episode #28 all about mould and the importance of a healthy home environment, today’s topic of electromagnetic fields and electromagnetic radiation is also incredibly important when it comes to our physical, mental and emotional health.

In this conversation we talk about:

  • The different kinds of EMFs, which are most concerning and the common sources in your tiny home
  • Preventative measures you can take to minimise EMF exposure in your tiny home, whether you’re building from scratch or already living in your tiny
  • Off-grid solar systems and EMFs
  • The most and least EMF-protective building materials
  • All about Amie’s course, EMF-Proof Your Home… and SO MUCH more!

031 - Sarah & Scott Rohdich are tiny housers living off-grid. They're also the co-owners of the tiny house building company, Häuslein, based in Port Macquarie in NSW. They build such amazing tiny houses! I got to see one of their homes recently at the Sydney Tiny Homes Expo and I really love the style of their tiny homes.

Company Story:

"Häuslein Tiny House Co. was founded in early 2018 by four friends with a shared passion to make a big impact in people's lives. We are strategically located in Port Macquarie (halfway between Sydney and Brisbane).

We’re passionate about a few things. We believe life is for living and enjoying. It’s about relationships and building a lifestyle that has time for the little things. Growing gardens, delicious, wholesome meals cooked at home, laughter around the table, tinkering on what you love, together.

We want to live and promote the less-stressed life where we can be refreshed to be productive and give our best to the world and those around us. We want to live sustainably, generously and creatively, maximising resources and keeping it simple".

The Hauslein Name:

"A ‘Häuslein’ is a small dwelling with a big heart. It’s warm, the lights are on, you’re welcome here. We named our company Häuslein Tiny House Co because of the German heritage of two of our co-founders, as well as our appreciation for German quality engineering which we seek to reflect in our tiny house builds".

What makes our company different:

"WE LIVE WHAT WE MAKE - Two of our founders, Sarah and Scott, actually live in a Häuslein Grand Sojourner with their two young boys. It’s their full-time and fully off-grid family home.

TRUSTED TEAM - Our growing team of experienced tiny house builders produce our high end tiny houses from scratch using efficient processes, expert craftsmanship and high-quality tools – right here in Australia.

INNOVATIVE DESIGNS - Our designs make it feel like a full-size home. Enjoy functionality and beauty with full-size appliances, space for quality furniture, and an optional innovative slide-out feature to expand the usable living space.

HIGH-QUALITY MATERIALS - We choose to use stunning timbers and the best materials, fixtures, fittings, appliances and technology we can find on all our models.

CRAFTSMANSHIP - From trailer chassis fabrication to timber benchtops each house is a labour of love, built to the highest standard of workmanship".

In this conversation we talk about:

  • Sarah and Scott’s family’s experiences of living tiny
  • What kind of family-friendly features they included in their home
  • Häuslein’s tiny house models and the kinds of high-quality building materials they use
  • Some options to connect with power, water, sewage and off-grid solutions with their homes

030 - Adam Hickman is a carpenter and natural building practitioner originally from the UK and now based in Victoria, who lived in a converted tiny house truck with his family several years ago. These days Adam and his family live in a strawbale house he constructed himself. Adam also runs a tiny building company called Evergreen Homes.

In this conversation we talk about:

  • What it’s like to live in a converted tiny house truck and how it was constructed with about 85% recycled materials
  • Adam’s experiences of living in a like-minded tiny house community
  • Strawbale houses and the features included in his current family home
  • All about Adam’s Tiny House building company, Evergreen Homes

About Adam Hickman"I started my career in construction 17 years ago as a young man of 18 in the UK. I started out as a traditional roofer specialising in slate, clay tile, shingle and hand-beaten lead work. I then went on to join a small, family-run building company focused on heritage restoration and construction in the West Midlands. This work broadened my skill set in construction, gaining experience in bricklaying, stonework and carpentry.

I was fortunate to work on beautiful Tudor and Georgian homes with strict criteria around building practices used, maintaining tradition and aesthetics whilst implementing modern techniques to improve thermal performance, including passive solar design features.

When moving to Australia in 2011, I discovered permaculture and organic farming whilst volunteering and travelling through WA (Western Australia). This encouraged me to look closely at my lifestyle, consumption and also the way our environment is treated on a global scale. I was inspired to deepen my learning in natural building, solar passive design and therefore ways I could combine my prior knowledge and experience to contribute in my own way to a more sustainable future.

Over the last 10 years, I have dedicated myself to learning and gaining experience in a magnitude of sustainable building practices. I’ve specialised in Traditional Timber Framing, Strawbale Homes and Tiny House design / building.

I have been self-employed for 10 years as a carpenter and natural building practitioner, running a variety of jobs, facilitating workshops and working under many inspiring builders to further my experience and understanding of good design, materials usage and techniques. The journey is ongoing and a continual commitment to providing a service that helps clients pursue their dreams whilst obtaining their vision efficiently, within their budget.

We lived in our tiny truck house full time for 4 years while I built a Strawbale home for our family in Deans Marsh, Victoria over the last 3 years. I'm currently leaning my business towards tiny homes to cater for the ever-growing issue with land/housing costs."

028 - Amie Skilton is a Naturopath, Nutritionist, Herbalist and qualified Mould Testing Technician (just to name a few things!)

As a long-time health and wellness geek myself, I know the importance of looking at health holistically and that includes a healthy home environment.

Amie is a wealth of knowledge, experience and inspiration in this area and not enough people are talking about this in the tiny house space! So I invited Amie onto the show to shout this message from the rooftops to educate tiny housers, tiny house building companies and everyone in-between! This is especially important in a small space like a tiny home.

In this conversation we talk about:

  • Amie’s story of mould-related illness and common signs & symptoms of mould exposure
  • Types of toxic mould and what a building biologist is
  • Mould prevention and considerations when it comes to the construction of a tiny home from scratch (for DIY builders and tiny building companies)
  • What to check for when it comes to mould detection and buying a pre-loved tiny home
  • The most mould-prone building materials and which materials are better options to avoid water damage and mould growth… and SO MUCH more!

016 - Kathy and Matt McMillan are experienced tiny housers from the mid-North Coast of NSW and who were on the podcast back in episode #009.

In that episode, they shared some of their experiences with their composting toilet. Compost toilets are a common area of discussion in the tiny house world, and it’s always great to hear real-life, practical experiences from people using them in their everyday lives.

So I’ve asked Kathy and Matt to join us again today to dive deeper into their own experiences with the two different brands they have used, as both toilets work quite differently, but the first one didn't work for them and the one they have currently is working for them.

About Kathy & Matt

Kathy and Matt McMillan have been living in their pre-loved tiny house on wheels with their dogs Chloe and Webber since April 2021. They live off-grid, with solar power, rainwater tank, and compost toilet, and believe living this way makes them more mindful of their impact on the environment.

Their tiny is parked on the property where Kathy grew up, on Dunghutti Country in the Mid North Coast hinterland of NSW. The family appeared on the Too Much Stuff episode of the ABC’s Compass program in July 2021, which is still available to view on ABC iView.

Going tiny was a conscious decision to live more sustainably, downsizing to what they really needed, and fuelled by a desire to slow down, live simply, in the peace and quiet of nature.

When living off-grid and managing waste, the couple decided a waterless compost toilet was the most efficient and sustainable way to use less water and recycle waste, which can eventually be used on fruit trees. It makes them uncomfortable using flush toilets now, seeing a precious resource wasted.

The couple do not claim to be experts in compost toilets however they want to share their experiences and some really honest toilet talk, no BS!

In this conversation we talk about:

  • Why Matt and Kathy chose a waterless composting toilet over other toilet options in their tiny home
  • Their first composting toilet and why it didn’t work for them
  • Their current "Separett Tiny" composting toilet, how it works and why it’s a better option for them
  • All about emptying, consumables and smells of composting toilets
  • What they’ve learned and wish they knew before buying and using a composting toilet
  • Lots more!

His interest in alternative living and food growing became quite an obsession and he dreamed of, one day, living off-grid back home in Australia.

In this conversation we talk about:

  • Natural building materials including natural paint
  • Unexpected discoveries, challenges and lessons learned from tiny house living (including navigating relationships and living with others in a small space)
  • Regenerative agriculture and syntropic food forests
  • Having a deeper connection with nature, the weather, the seasons and everyday life through tiny house living
  • Conscious lifestyle choices and ways to reduce single-use plastics
  • Lots more!

009 - Kathy and Matt McMillan are experienced tiny housers from the mid-North Coast of NSW.

Kathy and Matt have been living in their pre-loved tiny house on wheels with their dogs Chloe and Webber since April 2021. Their tiny is parked on the property where Kathy grew up, on Dunghutti Country in the Mid North Coast hinterland of NSW. The family appeared on the "Too Much Stuff" episode of ABC’s Compass program in July 2021, which is still available to view on ABC iView.

Ten years ago, the couple started questioning their stressful city life and excessive consumption. They had busy corporate jobs, a mortgage, and mounting personal debt just to keep up with all the things they thought they needed.

Five years ago, they discovered the tiny house movement but thought it would remain a dream for them. When Kathy’s Mum died in 2018, it forced introspection and set the wheels in motion that got them to where they are now.

Going tiny was a conscious decision to live more sustainably, downsizing to what they really needed, and fuelled by a desire to slow down, live simply, in the peace and quiet of nature. Financial freedom was a motivator, along with freeing up time to concentrate on meaningful pursuits and most importantly living close to family.

In this conversation we talk about:

  • Why Matt and Kathy chose to buy a pre-loved tiny home instead of DIY building
  • Their off-the-grid set-up including what they do with solar, water, a composting toilet and management of greywater
  • Financing a tiny house
  • How living in a tiny house connects you to everyday life and nature
  • Some misconceptions they commonly hear about tiny house living
  • Plenty more!
