Cashawn Myers of HABESHA, Inc. spoke with Southern SARE Communications Specialist, DaraMonifah Cooper on the past, present, and future of the HABESHA program, which aims to create cross-cultural learning opportunities and bridge opportunities with their graduates. They reviewed past support from SSARE helped them in the early stages of development as well as their currently ongoing projects and future plans. Lastly, learn about the recently held 20th Annual Organic Fest and the upcoming 9th Annual Harvest Fest events, organized by HABESHA 's organization.

FARMER/NGO Highlight: Learn about Chris Smith of The Utopian Seed Project, who along with other community partners utilized a $50,000 Southern SARE Education grant titled, “Saving Seed for Resilient Local Systems,” to promote seed-saving among Southeastern farmers through the creation of an online video series.

The Southern Region Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education (SSARE) Graduate Student Grant Program is a competitive program to fund graduate student projects that address sustainable agriculture issues.
One of our most popular grants, this program was instituted in 2000 for full-time graduate students (Master’s and Ph.D.) enrolled at accredited colleges and universities. Projects must include a clear and well-defined research topic that benefits sustainable agriculture in the Southern Region.
General Info for Graduate Students:
- Awards can be up to $22,000 (only 1 each allowed per grad student career)
- Projects are for 24 months
- Helps introduce sustainable ag
- A good introduction to grant writing
- Builds student research portfolio
- Develops relationship between student and SARE
- A faculty/researcher advisor is a requirement for students to apply
In addition to profitability and environment SARE funds proposals that address social issues, especially issues that affect the quality of life of farmers and the people who live in farm communities.

Graduate Student Grant WEBINAR on FEB 28 9:30 AM EST** (Registration Link)
Join us in a virtual discussion with Graduate Students Grants Manager Candace Pollock-Moore, or register to get the recording. Candace will share key factors in creating a proposal for the graduate student grant. This webinar provides clarification about the key components of a SARE proposal and guidance to applicants to see if their idea fits in with the SARE program. We are not allowed to help students write the grant or review grant proposals prior to submission.

The Southern Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program, or Southern SARE, released the 2022 Graduate Student Grants Call for Proposals. It’s open to Master’s and PhD students enrolled at accredited institutions across the Southern region who are interested in exploring areas of sustainable agriculture through quantitative and qualitative research projects.
Submit proposals by twelve noon on May 6th. To be announced in August, a $16,5000 max is awarded for two-year projects which start September 1st.
