Up until 14 years of age, I was raised in a single parent household where “big boys don’t cry” was not only a mantra but law. Ironically, I was the most emotional kid at heart. I fell in love with a game that took those tears and called them “passion.” But within another context, those same tears could be deemed as a sign of weakness. Like many players, there was little training in how to manage emotions in a healthy manner outside of the game. I now realize that there’s a plethora of other athletes that have dealt with a similar upbringing.
