The Chamber Jazz Society of Baltimore had its origin in the winter of 1990-1991 when three Baltimore area friends were talking around the dinner table about the dearth of opportunities in Baltimore to hear jazz. There were then excellent jazz programs at the King of France Tavern in Annapolis, and they recalled exciting concerts at the Famous Ballroom on North Charles Street where, under the sponsorship of The Left Bank Jazz Society, the brightest stars from New York City would perform, having ridden the train to Baltimore on Sunday afternoons, returning the same evening.

Your Host Phinesse Demps chops it up with this talented artist Tygressa.

Here is just a little something about Tygressa:

Tygressa Jones, most affectionately known as ‘Ty’ by many, was only 11 years old when her musical curiosity was drawn to Natalie Cole’s sultry yet powerful vocal tones and style.  She recalls at such a tender age singing “I’m Catching Hell (living here alone)” and feeling every bit of the pain and regret the lyrics aligned with such incredibly orchestrated music would suggest.  It was where and when she began to experience the emotional effects of meaningful lyrics.  Having claimed the albums of her older brother, Ric, who was a local Deejay – The Black Dragon – at the time, Ty learned and mimicked every song on those albums – Side A and Side B – lyric for lyric, note for note.  Being a member of her elementary school chorus was also very instrumental in the development of her voice and vocal range.  As a result of a chorus, the Carpenters is her all-time favorite singing group!

Drawing comparisons to some of music’s greatest singer, songwriter, producers like Babyface, Michael Jackson and El Debarge, Devon Howard has constructed a style and feel very reminiscent of his childhood inspirations yet uniquely all his own. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Devon’s greatest influence was his father, Melvin Leonard Brown, who was a songwriter for a few local groups of his era including The Bleu Lights, who enjoyed a hit release written by Brown. After graduating from The Baltimore School for the Arts, Devon joined the group Me 2 U who scored a record deal with RCA Records allowing him to write two songs on the album. The self-titled debut album contained production from Vincent Herbert (Lady Gaga, Tamar Braxton) and Ron Fair (Christina Aguilera, Keyshia Cole). The project released two singles ‘Want U Back’ and ‘All Night’ both charting on the R&B Billboard charts respectively. After Me 2 U disbanded, Howard and two other members of the group formed Diverisiti, signing to Global/EMI Records. This venture gave Devon the opportunity to write and produce twelve songs on the CD. The group toured the United States promoting their music and eventually went on to do solo projects. In 2005, Howard signed with an indie label in Europe and released his first solo project entitled ‘Urban Eclecticism.’ The success of that project lead to a record deal in Japan and garnered more fanfare abroad for Devon. In 2007, the release of Howard’s hit single ‘Other Side of the Bed’ through Global Entertainment marked his first release in the United States. The video for the single was directed by Chris Robinson (Beyonce’, Usher, Bruno Mars) and played on video outlets worldwide, including VH1 Soul and BET. Global released a second single ‘Yesterday’ in 2008, a duet with Baltimore’s own Paula Campbell which fared well at Urban AC radio. In the subsequent years, Devon performed around the country opening for major and independent artists, including Joe, Mario, KeKe Wyatt and Dionne Warwick. Taking time to produce projects and delve into other facets of the entertainment industry, Howard has created a suite of songs that feels reminiscent of old school classic love songs yet still retaining relevance in today’s market. The album entitled ‘Return To Love’ and its ’singles ‘Back To Paradise’ and ‘Could This Be Love’ have already gained attention across the globe and is set to make its debut in the United States at Urban AC radio. Return To Love is currently available on most digital outlets. Devon is not just the nice guy with the smooth sexy voice, he is the winner of the Heineken/ASCAP Initiative for Songwriting. Amidst his hectic schedule he also finds time to give back. He’s been an advocate for foster kids and homeless teens in his hometown Baltimore the past fifteen years. Devon also put together a compilation CD of local Artists where 100% of the proceeds went to supporting a day shelter for homeless youth and young adults. Devon Howard has also performed at countless charitable events and have donated to various organizations including The Red Cross and America’s Harvest.

Castella hit the music scene in April 2020 with the release of her original tune No Ordinary Love. Hailing from Long Beach, California, Castella has sang her entire life. Castella's family and friends know her as Cathy Rebecca Crowell-Thompson - wife, mother of 3 and Human Resources (HR) Executive. In the latter part of her career in HR, she was inspired to tap into the creative side of her brain by mentor and writing partner, Darryl Swann. Unknowing to Castella, this little project would turn into the fulfillment of unrealized dreams of sharing her gifts with the world and being her saving grace after losing her HR position just weeks after the release of her EP. Castella released her first EP -Thinking About You, produced by Corey Stampley, in late 2019. She released her first single from that EP "No Ordinary Love"in April 2020. This tune reached #24 on the Smooth Jazz Charts and garnered her a"Breakout Artist of 2020"Nomination by Smooth Jazz Network, an original iHeartRadio station. She then decided to make another record and release it on her birthday as a gift to herself. During the pandemic, she met producer Jeff Canady. Along with Jeff, they pushed out two amazing records,"Let Me Love You" and "Sleigh Ride"! "Let Me Love You" reached #33 on the smooth jazz charts and rose to #5 on the Urban charts and rose to #1 on the Black Planet Radio chart in Italy. Sleigh Riderose to #6 on the smooth jazz Holiday Chart. Castella's work on "Let Me Love You" garnered her nominations for the"President's Award","New Comer of the Year"and"Best Female Artist of 2020"as well as being named "Artist of the Year" by the Central Standard Time Show onstlsmoothjazz.com. and she has the hardware to show it! Ever true to her work and trusting her heart, Castella decided to reach back into her pocket and release her tune Mojito from her debut EP. A very special record to Castella and her team where her mentor, multi-platinum, Grammy Award winning producer Darryl Swann contributed with writing on the tune as well as mixing and mastering the tune, in fact all of her tunes. Mojito did well on the charts, rising to #2 on the Urban Influencer R&B/Soul Chart and #49 on the Smooth Jazz Network Top 100 Chart!! Castella continues to work on more music to share with her fans. The"Let Me Love You" EP is slated for release in late 2021 and will include two original tunes and two of Castella’s favorite tunes.

It gives us great pleasure to introduce the baddest new voice in the land, Napoleon Demps. A Flint Michigan native, he grew up listening to Soul luminaries OV Wright, Willie Hutch and Sam Cooke, whose influence led Demps down a path to becoming an accomplished Soul singer himself - scoring his first hit at the age of 24 in the still thriving Southern Chitlin Circuit of the early aughts.

Demps, having been a long time Daptone fan, connected with the Dap-Kings at a soundcheck at a Detroit nightclub for an impromptu rendition of “A Change is Gonna Come.” Bosco Mann was floored by his voice and swore they would meet again. Last year, with that sweet soulful voice still ringing in his ears, Mann would reconnect with Demps and bring him out to Penrose Recorders in Riverside, California to finally cut his first Daptone side. "Norma Jean" is a funky soul groover that lands somewhere between the nuanced big city sounds Chicago and Detroit were pumping out in the late '60s: think the grit of Twinight's houseband Pieces of Peace, kissed by the sophisticated Motor City production of Dave Hamilton or The Brothers of Soul and you're getting warm. Napoleon's smooth, commanding voice injects a je ne sais quoi that's wholly fresh, bypassing the affected trappings that plague many of today's singers

Will Preston was first introduced to most music fans with the release of his debut CD, It’s My Will, on the West King Entertainment imprint. It’s My Will garnered rave reviews worldwide and was featured on many of the most well-known and respected websites and radio stations across the globe. Numerous magazine articles and television appearances also helped fuel the debut’s success, which went on to gain distribution and licensing deals in the UK, Japan, Germany, Spain, Canada, The Netherlands and many other territories, solidifying its reputation as one of the most significant debut efforts by an independent artist. But long before then, Will was laying the foundation for his foray onto the music scene. Growing up in Virginia, Will always knew that music was his calling. A quick read of the liner notes of his first release tells of how he was fascinated with his grandmother’s vast collection of records and how he imagined as a young boy that he would one day see himself on the cover of an album. He never lost sight of that vision.
