Promise Hub is a podcast series about empowerment in harsh conditions. Here, you'll hear about social projects launched by African refugees in Nakivale, one of the world's oldest refugee Settlements, directly from the amazing change-makers behind the ideas.
Jimmy is sharing his story of how his life became hard in Kampala and decided to leave Kampala, after getting his papers from the OPM(office of the prime minister) which allow him to move, He is now living in Nakivale and has made a life in Nakivale.
Moses Kasungu is a mentor at Promise Hub and artist that uses his passion for music to uplift others. He is leading Kolibriz Talentz, a trauma healing project that uplifts youth through their talent. Moses is giving local artists hope for success through their own passion.
Moses Sariki is an entrepreneur, a game changer at Promise Hub and an English language trainer. He is passionate about the environment, leading a project to recycle used plastics and transform them into handicraft. For Moses protecting the environment means keeping the communities healthy.
David while shy at the beginning, due to English being his third language, felt much better once we invited him to showcase his artistic talent. He spends much of his time making and selling kitenge (a popular African fabric) accessories, and, since the pandemic has pivoted towards making and selling masks to keep his community healthy.
Elie Nuru is the founder and manager of One Can Bakery, one of the few pastry shops in Nakivale. Elie discusses some of the challenges, perceptions and opportunities his business has faced and how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected his business.
Laurence is a refugee, and resident of Nakivale Refugee Settlement, originally from Burundi. She is a a Promise Hub Game Changer, an artist focused on designing clothes and sandals. She uses her know-how in order to empower widows and orphans through training.
Daniella is 21 years old project manager and change-maker based in Nakivale. She reached Nakivale in 2014 and became a scholar at Opportunigee in 2017 in order to learn entrepreneurship. She is passionate about women's empowerment and currently leads two such projects. She founded Mwinda, a project that uses solar panels to provide public illumination in Nakivale. She also leads the Promise Hub Human Journeys project locally, identifying and interviewing amazing real stories of locals in order to create graphic novels illustrating their stories.
