Scott Barone is the Founder and Principal of Barone Management LLC. Founded in 1999, the company was initially focused on property management and small to medium-sized fee-based construction management projects before expanding into development consulting as well. By 2005, Barone had approximately 400,000 square feet of property under its stewardship, a mix of property management and active construction. However, Mr. Barone’s earliest success arrived via a partnership with The McSam Hotel Group, in which Mr. Barone endeavored to develop a series of hotels in 2009, the first located in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood at 231 Hudson Street, and the second located in downtown Brooklyn within immediate proximity to the Barclays Center at 40 Nevins Street. Both projects proved to be profitable, shifting the firm’s focus solely to developing properties for its own account with an emphasis on long term ownership. Since that time, Mr. Barone has led the strategic vision of the company while overseeing its expansion into various market sectors, including hospitality, commercial, industrial, and community facility from the approach of both ground-up development as well as acquisition and renovation. Most recently, in 2018, Mr. Barone recognized what he believed to be a substantial gap that existed within the educational facilities market and has led his eponymous firm’s foray into the niche charter school sector. Today Mr. Barone manages all aspects of the company’s financial dealings and project design, with a specific focus on creative deal-structuring and management of vital relationships among industry leaders, investors, government officials, and financial institutions. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out in commercial real estate, you won't want to miss this valuable insight and advice. I hope you all enjoy this episode as much as I did.

After graduating from George Washington University in 2007 with a degree in Business Administration, Brandon Singer began his career in commercial real estate brokerage. During this 16-year career, Brandon has negotiated high profile retail, hospitality, and food & beverage leases in NYC and gateway cities across the United States. Brandon’s transactions for tenants like Showfields, FitHouse, H&R Block, and Fabric, as well as major landlords like The Related Companies, Blackstone, Thor Equities, and Ashkenazy Acquisition Corporation have surpassed $4 billion in aggregate value.
In late 2013, Michael Cody accepted what he originally believed would be a temporary support role in retail real estate to financially supplement his performing arts career. However, that “short-term gig” led to Michael developing an unexpected passion for retail and transitioning into brokerage. Michael then spent the next several years leasing flagship locations for trailblazing retail tenants and marketing retail opportunities for many of New York City’s top commercial landlords. A graduate of Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Michael feels a special connection to young entrepreneurs, taking great pride in helping new tenants roll out their concepts in New York City.
Singer and Cody have worked together for nearly 8 years, and in September of 2020, the two decided to join forces and form their own retail brokerage firm, Retail by Mona. MONA is a first-of-its-kind retail leasing and advisory firm that uses modern tools to guide tenants and landlords through the increasingly disrupted retail landscape. An acronym that stands for “Making Of a New Age,” MONA was inspired by the most famous image of the Renaissance period as well as its founder’s steadfast belief that retail has entered a renaissance of its own.
We talk about what it takes to be successful as a retail broker and the state of the retail market. This chat was very valuable, entertaining, and motivating. I hope you all enjoy this podcast as much as I did.
