Before Your Parent's Dementia Diagnosis: 4 Things Every Family Must Do NOW (From a Daughter Who's Lived It)
If you have a parent over 70, this episode could save your family $35,000, a year of your life, and the kind of stress that breaks marriages and fractures families.
After four years of navigating dementia caregiving for multiple family members — including her mother-in-law with Alzheimer's, her father-in-law with vascular dementia, and now signs in her own family — Shelly Niehaus is sharing the proactive caregiving roadmap she wishes someone had handed her family before "the phone call."
This is the episode every adult child with an aging parent needs to hear — before a dementia diagnosis lands in your lap.
Most dementia and caregiving resources are built for families already in crisis. This one is different. This one is for the daughter, son, or spouse who has felt the flutter in their stomach but doesn't know where to start. The one quietly watching. The one quietly worrying. The one who doesn't have a plan — yet.
In this deeply personal episode, Shelly walks you through the 4 areas of dementia caregiving you cannot avoid — and how to start on every single one of them today, without a diagnosis, without a family meeting, and without anyone in your family agreeing that something is wrong.
In this episode, you'll learn:
📋 GET THE FREE DEMENTIA CAREGIVING READINESS GUIDEMark and Shelly built the Dementia Caregiving Readiness Guide so YOUR family doesn't have to learn this the hard way. Friend, I want to talk to you about something that has carried me through the hardest year of my life — something that didn't exist three years ago, and something I almost didn't start because I was scared, tired, and a little bit hurt.
In this episode, I'm sharing the full story of how this podcast came to be — including the season I lost my voice trying to be strategic, the prompt from the Lord to come back to my roots, and the prayer call I didn't want to start that has now been carrying me for two and a half years.
This is the lesson midlife has taught me, and the one I want to leave you with: you don't find your community. You create it.
In this episode, I share:
The most quoted line from this episode:
"You don't find community. You create it."
One question to sit with this week:
What do I crave? A prayer group? A walking buddy? A monthly dinner with friends? A book club that actually talks about the book? Name it — and then take one small step this week to start building it.

In this episode, Shelly shares a simple rhythm she’s used for years to manage the everyday “life admin” that often falls on women’s shoulders.
She calls it the Midlife Edit—a weekly rhythm that organizes admin tasks into three theme days so they stop taking up mental space all week long.

In this Midlife Edit episode, I’m rethinking my relationship with technology through a simple but powerful lens: Does this tool enhance my community, or does it diminish it? Inspired by wisdom I came across while reading Reconnected by Carlos Whittaker, I share five practical ways I’m using technology right now to build connection instead of distraction.
If you’ve ever felt like your phone pulls you away from what matters, this episode will encourage you to see how technology — used with intention — can actually deepen your relationships with God, yourself, and the people you love.
Key TakeawaysWhy filtering technology through the lens of community and faith can simplify your choices.
A reminder that technology isn’t the enemy — it’s how we use it that matters.
Five practical tools I’m using to enhance connection:
Encouragement that midlife is the perfect time to reset your tech habits and use them to strengthen community.

One of the biggest surprises of midlife is how friendships shift—and how lonely it can sometimes feel. If your circle feels smaller than you expected, you’re not the only one. In this episode, Shelly shares encouragement and three simple ways to start building connection again. Because loneliness isn’t your identity—it’s just a signal that your soul is ready for connection.
Key Takeaways:
🙋♀️ Remember: someone has to go first—and the friend you’re thinking of may be waiting for you to reach out, too.
Resources:
In this deeply personal episode, I share a journal entry I wrote just weeks before dropping my boys off at college, closing my business, grieving friendship shifts, and walking through the final days of my mother-in-law’s Alzheimer’s journey.
This isn't a strategy session. It’s an honest reflection on what it feels like to let go of everything familiar—and face the silence that follows. I call it The Void—and if you’ve ever been there too, I hope this episode helps you feel seen, supported, and a little less alone.
Whether you’re grieving a role, a relationship, or just sitting in a season of waiting, this conversation is for you.
Key Takeaways: You’re not the only one feeling lost after the kids leave or the business ends * Letting go isn’t failure—it’s often the first step of obedience * Sometimes the hardest part isn’t what we lose—it’s the quiet space left behind * You can’t out-strategize surrender or hustle through heartbreak * God is still working—even when life feels foggy, slow, or silent * The daily things (walks, dishes, dinner) are* sacred * It’s okay to just be here, to breathe, and to trust His timing

We all deal with decision fatigue as entrepreneurs, but few of us know how it impacts our brains and performance. In this episode, I chat with executive consultant Jodi Hume about how to fight decision burnout and nourish our brains.
Jodi explains that constant micro-decisions tax our prefrontal cortex, the "CEO" part of our brain. This leads to poor choices and impulse control when our mental fuel runs low later in the day. She shares science-backed tips for preserving brain glucose like minimizing decisions where possible and being cautious of "junk food" dopamine first thing in the morning.
We also discuss the different types of rest and recharging beyond just sleep that entrepreneurs need more of. Jodi provides a framework for figuring out what your brain needs to refill your tank, whether it's creative time, sensory relief, or social connection.
Jodi reminds us that when you feel like you can't pause and step away, that's exactly when you must. Tune in for more unconventional wisdom that will help you make space for your best strategic thinking.

In this episode, I'll be delving into my experiences with time management and productivity strategies. I share about a weekly planning routine that has significantly transformed both my business and personal life.
I start by reflecting on the previous week's projects and wins, and then I suggest planning the upcoming week.
My approach involves consolidating appointments and projects in one place while identifying 'the big three' key tasks crucial for progressing through the week.
I've adopted this method from Michael Hyatt’s Full Focus Planner, and it has truly elevated my business and alleviated my overwhelm. I can't stress enough the importance of allocating time for self-care alongside work commitments.
I also share why writing by hand works best for me as an effective means for me to visualize the tasks for the week.

As a business coach and personal brand strategist, I'm here to shed light on what a personal brand truly means. So, what exactly is a personal brand? In my experience, it boils down to three essential components: your name, your face, and how you make people feel.

Consistency across your brand visuals and online presence is key. Want to take practical steps toward developing your personal brand? Start by auditing your profile photos, ensuring they meet our discussed criteria.
It's time to stand out in the digital world and become the go-to professional in your industry. Join me on this podcast, take action, and let me know how I can continue to empower you by leaving a rating or review.

How to Reframe Your Failure and Enhance Success
This week I’m sharing a powerful message that speaks to every business owner. It's about resilience, learning from setbacks, and embracing personal growth. In this episode, I recount a personal journey through my first launch, a venture into uncharted territory.
I set a goal for ten sign-ups, but reality had a different plan I felt like a failure, focusing on the gap rather than the gains. But there’s a twist! Listen up to learn more about it, but in a nutshell, I learned invaluable skills, took bold actions, built momentum, and gained crucial data and feedback. I had yet to notice these wins while fixating on that arbitrary goal. I highlighted the power of choosing where to focus. Instead of dwelling on the harvest, I learned to appreciate the seeds sown—the effort, growth, and lessons along the way. This shift in mindset changed everything. So, this week's practical step for you is simple: Reevaluate where you're directing your attention. Shift from the harvest to the seeds you're planting for the future.
Tune in for an inspirational journey of self-discovery and transformation, and let's empower ourselves to focus on growth and progress, no matter our age or experience. Remember, it's not about what you accomplish but what you become.

This week we are kicking off a special series called Smart Girl Summer. In this series, I am celebrating a few of the ladies who have influenced me on my entrepreneurial journey. Today I have a special guest for you. This delightful lady has been a peer of mine in a group coaching program for the last few years. We have had front-row seats to see each other’s highs, lows, and everything in between. The best part is that she has been a constant cheerleader to me and I have watched her grow and take her business to new heights! I am here to tell you that you don’t have to do business alone and it's always better with “friends”. Along the way, I have learned so much about her passion which I will let her tell you about.
In this episode, Wendy Bergen, the founder of Joyfully Prepared and host of the Joyfully Prepared podcast, joins me. Wendy shares how she learned to pivot in her personal and professional life and how forgiveness has played a key role in her journey. She also discusses the importance of creating, even amid adversity.
Forgiveness inspires us to 'create,' Wendy says; she talks about the importance of forgiveness, the joy of creating, and the value of being part of a supportive coaching group. We also emphasized the benefits of investing in coaching programs, finding a safe and empowering community, and the power of networking within a group coaching setting. The episode concludes with an inspiring message to keep moving forward and embrace life's good and challenging experiences.
What are your thoughts on the importance of pivoting? How has forgiveness played a role in your life?

All her rejection letters from literary agents came down to the same thing. They all loved the work. They all compared the work to well-known authors. But because she didn’t have a big enough platform, agents always passed on her. Carrie used that pivot in life and launched a company that could help women just like her―unapologetic in their stories without a massive following. She’s married to her best friend and on her next soul quest to become the next version of herself.

In this episode, we will learn how Adam Karofsky wrote his story, from being on track to becoming a professor and pivoting to entrepreneurship. Adam's journey was dynamic; when he was a kid, he dreamt of being a professor and wanted to be immersed in anthropology. Still, in the end, he's now running a business that helps people craft their stories, "… that was my goal until things got shifted around, and like we all have to do, you pivot, and you shift into something different. And now I'm here writing for myself, writing for others, and helping people tell their stories."
In one of our conversations, Adam discussed writing and how getting out those first words or sentences is one of the most complex parts of the writing process. Starting anything is difficult, but he believes that once you get going, the momentum will take over from there. Trusting this process will lead to better opportunities and a more emotional narrative.
Here is what you can expect from this episode:
About Adam Karofsky:
Adam S. Karofsky is the A.S.K. behind ASK Writes, a writing and editing business where he helps people tell their stories. For Adam, writing is a tool to string together stories, share information, and connect people. Adam built his business around two things: lifestyle and love. By creating a business based on his love for writing and storytelling, Adam has been able to help loads of people dive into their passions and stories. He has also built his business while embarking on several multi-month trips worldwide. Adam is going to talk about his business and the story of how he got to where he is today.

”When individuals consider beauty and confidence, they frequently consider outward, or looking, confidence. And I can assure you that confidence is more than just stylish hair and makeup. By moving beyond our comfort zone, we develop our confidence.”
In this episode, Kelly talks about the power of confidence and how it is crucial to everyone’s self-development. As a cosmetologist, she offered her definition of what true confidence is. Aside from that, we go to the root and where everyone should start to build that inner confidence – self-care! She said that the basic foundation of confidence is self-care, and it could be as easy as getting up and eating breakfast every day or doing a workout. We discuss identifying what you must do to make that happen. The lesson Kelly gave is to learn how to show up and be aware of how you convey an authentic message to your people.

Have you ever been asked to do the one thing you dreaded most?
As a young adult, I did all the things that I thought a “responsible person” would do. I got a degree in Business, a well paying job with benefits and a 401K. When my husband and I started a family, I launched my first business so I could stay at home with my twin boys. And as a young mom I fully embraced that season of life.
Our suburban life in the Dallas appeared ideal with the SUV, a beautiful home, and my thriving photography business.
As ideal as our life was on the outside, I had lost myself in the season of motherhood at times, and I knew in my heart that it was not the life that we were meant to live. It looked good on paper but the pace was not sustainable for our family or our marriage.
Despite the fact that everyone thought we were nuts, we decided to do the very thing I dreaded most. In 2021, we left the only life we had ever known and moved 1600 miles across the country to start over.
When we decided to make the leap there was so much uncertainty. We did not know the future of my husband’s job. We were taking the boys away from everything they had ever known, and I would have to start my business over. However, we decided to let faith not fear be our compass!
Today we are building the life of our dreams. My boys not only survived but are thriving and would never go back. With a background in marketing and a decade in the photography business, I know how to help entrepreneurs shine online and share their talents with the world. The opportunity to rebuild my business allowed me to transition into a role as business coach and personal brand strategist.
Learning to pivot and not panic is a game changer in life and business. It will set you free! Choosing the adventure has allowed me to step into my purpose, build a beautiful business and a beautiful life in the mountains of Boise.
Join us here where we will share stories and topics to educate, empower and inspire you!
I am your host, Shelly Niehaus and this is the Educated. Empowered. Inspired. Podcast.
