Dr. Lalitha Trivikram is a board-certified Internal Medicine physician who graduated from Penn State College of Medicine and completed her post-graduate training at the University of Michigan and New York Hospital - Cornell. She has over 20 years of experience in outpatient, inpatient, and congregate care settings, including skilled nursing, acute rehabilitation, and correctional facilities. Currently, she serves as a medical director in the Philadelphia Department of Prisons, the jail for the City of Philadelphia, which has a daily census of around 4,500 citizens and a patient population numbering nearly 18,000 individuals annually. In the spring of 2020, she stepped into public health when asked to be the lead physician in the COVID-19 response at the PDP. Under her leadership, the mortality rate from Covid has been one-tenth that of other regional jurisdictions. She is a family friend, and I had the luxury of shadowing her as an undergrad. Lalitha is a stunningly good diagnostician and a fantastic person all around.

He went to medical school at University of Pittsburgh and trained in Pediatric at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has been with my his practice for the last 31 years treating pediatric patients in the outpatient setting. Dr. Harkness was actually my pediatrician as well, and, amazingly, I had the opportunity to work under him in a 3rd year rotation last year. Today I have the privilege of sitting down with my Dad, Ivan Gergel, again. My dad was born and raised in London where he went to medical school and became a psychiatrist. He then joined the pharmaceutical company GSK in developing new antidepressant drugs, famously some of the SSRIs we all are of course aware of today. This job took him to the US where he started our family with my Mom. Dad was responsible for the running of hundreds of clinical trials, directed R&D for various pharmaceutical companies, and personally led the development and approval of 14 new therapies such as Lexapro, Paxil, and Namenda that have had fantastic impacts on patient’s lives. He currently is working in healthcare investing with new startup drug and device companies. Today, we will be discussing alternative careers in medicine, specifically because my Dad only practiced medicine for two years before switching over to Industry.
