We're back! After a brief hiatus because of Spring Break and a short trip to Scotland, Design House is back with a recap of the knowledge gained from the Home of the Highlands. This is the first episode of a multi-episode series on the architectural and design history of Scotland. Scotland has a very turbulent past of clans fighting, invaders trying to conquer the territory, and fighting against the British royal crown for almost a century. However, through it all, Scotland still stands as one of the most vivid and welcoming countries for tourists to come visit to. Be prepared as we talk about the history of castles, the famous architect and designer Charles Renne Mackintosh, and of course, bagpipes!

We are taking a little break from Greece and jumping into the beginning of the end of the ancient Roman Empire with the beginning of the Holy Roman Empire and the construction of the Pantheon. The Pantheon was the temple of all gods in ancient Roman mythology, and its past to its current day construction is just as turbulent and wonderful as the empire that it came from.

We are leaving Ancient Egypt history and diving right in to Ancient Greece! In this episode we discuss the beginnings of the ancient Grecian empire and the kingdom of Minos that was discovered, and then diving into the beginnings of Grecian temple design; learning the vocabulary associated with components of the temples, and the oldest column order. We end this episode with the importance of the Golden ratio and how it is more than just a way to do proportion in architecture. All that with only one Hercules reference!

While dropping back into Ancient Egypt, we discuss unique Egyptian design motifs, the significance of the pyramids and the Sphinx (including why it's nose is gone) and finish off with King Tut's tomb and why the media in the 1920's believed it to be haunted. There are several different motifs that are symbolic of the culture of Ancient Egypt, as well as what was important physically and spiritually to the people of that time.
