David Lyman is a retired Navy EOD Operator training to break the Guinness World Record for the fastest Bomb Suit Marathon. He is attempting this enormous task to raise awareness about EOD and raise funds for the EOD Warrior Foundation. In this episode, we talk about how he came up with the idea, some of the hurdles he has to tackle during training, and what his ultimate goal for the Bomb Suit Marathon actually is.

EODCS(ret) Cliff Sabo had a Navy EOD career that only one dreams of. Deploying to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Bahrain where he disarmed IED's, supported special operations assault teams, led underwater mine countermeasures teams, and more. On shore duty, he was at Det Marianas where he spent his time defusing bombs on base, blowing up mines underwater, and doing range clearance operations on a small island in the Pacific. Tony Seifert is a Navy EOD Operator who has an exhausting hobby. In his free time he goes out and trains, running mile after mile, eventually spending his weekends competing in races of 32-100 miles. That's right, up to 100 miles at a time.
In this podcast Tony talks about what got him into running ultra marathons and what it's like to compete in a race where you have many competitors, but the hardest one is yourself.

Richard Davidson joined the US Navy in 1959 and ultimately retired in 1989 as a CWO4 in EOD, after 22 years. Among his many deployments, he did five tours in Vietnam and deployed worldwide. After he retired from the Navy he had a heart attack that changed his life. Richard is an Alkalarian and has dedicated his life to teaching others what he believes helped him survive a potential killer. Thriving in his 80’s he’s now a health and wellness coach.

Jacquelyn Read is a retired Explosive Ordnance Disposal Senior Chief with 21 years in the Navy. After six years as a Chinese linguist, she graduated from EOD school and ultimately EOD Mobile Unit Three, from which she deployed multiple times. Jacque was then selected for a special program and spent many years as part of a Special Mission Unit where she operated in small teams all around the world.

Learning to deal with adversity is understanding that you haven't failed if you don't give up.
A positive attitude will bring us all to a greater position in life.
Karl Krahn separated from the Navy as an EODCS at 19 years. The first 17 years of his career were marked with success after success. He served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Philippines as an EOD Operator after spending some time in the fleet as an ET. The job is intense and built up stressors that compounded with his personal life, as it does for many of us. During the last few years those boiled over and caused an early exit.
Not one to give up, he pushed through, got the help he needed, and was able to purchase a franchise with a fitness company. Through that business, Karl was able to build a community. Not without its own struggles, the community is something that he thrived in.
His journey from EOD to the civilian sector shows us that the objective in life is to look forward and keep pushing. Our past struggles can be used for future strength.

Jeff Simons spent 26 years with US Navy EOD, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander (select). During that time he was stationed and deployed all around the world. From Operation Earnest Will, and Desert Storm, to Operation Iraqi Freedom, Jeff has participated in most of the major conflicts around the world during his career.
In addition to his military career, Jeff stayed close to the EOD community after retirement. Being an integral part of A-T Solutions to his current job as Co-Founder of Unmanned Systems Operations Group (USOF), he has used the skills learned in EOD to push himself and those he works with not just for a profit, but to benefit the communities he’s been a part of.

Episode 37 is with Brian Kirk, a US Navy Reserve Commander who served 11 years on active duty as a Navy EOD Officer. During his active duty time, he deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and spent significant time in Korea. He shares stories from his combat deployments, some funny and some serious. He also talks about the transition to a civilian job and what the Naval Reserves has done for him.
I went through EOD school with Brian, some of the most memorable times I’ve had in EOD. We reminisce on those times, share some stories, and purposely leave out names. We all know our exploits during that time could come back to haunt us.

Tod Neal, a 30-year Navy Veteran who retired as a Senior Chief EOD Operator, joins me for episode 36 of the podcast. Growing up in a Methodist children’s home, he had a tough childhood. While struggling with direction, he found toughness and learned he wouldn’t quit.
Tod joined the Navy in 1991 and even before he joined EOD his courage under fire was tested. After finding out about EOD and being selected to go through training, Tod flourished. EOD was where he belonged. Being tested over and over again in combat, he always rose to the occasion. Trouble seemed to find him, some would say he was unlucky, but he always bested it and came out on top.

Adam Garrett joins me for the 35th episode of the Echo Oscar Delta Podcast. Adam served 15 years in Navy EOD before separating as a Senior Chief. He deployed four times to Iraq, Afghanistan, Bahrain, and an Aircraft Carrier.

In episode 32 of the podcast, I sit down with EODCM (ret) Tara Asbury to talk about her career and beyond. Tara has been someone I have lookup up to for many years, reaching out several times for advice and perspective. In our conversations I got to learn a bit more about her.
Amongst other things, we talked about what the driving force was in joining Navy EOD, the workups, deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa. We also touched on leadership goods and bads and ideas on how to balance the needs and wants a leader face with one’s own requirements and how those personal sacrifices grow as your family grows.

EODCS James Hebert (Eh Bear) joins me in Episode 31 where he talks about a variety of EOD topics experienced over his 20 years of service. I talked with Shawn Bacon, Jason's Dad, about who he was as a boy and his likes, dislikes, and motivations. We discuss his military service from his family's perspective, as well as what it was like for his family when they found out the news.

In episode # 25, we delve into the experiences of Chris Garris, a UK volunteer deeply involved in humanitarian mine action since 2014. Chris's journey began in Myanmar, where he clandestinely joined a group to clear landmines due to the absence of a legal framework. His interest led him to Ukraine in the early stages of its conflict in 2014. Despite language barriers and resource limitations in Ukraine's institutions, Chris joined a volunteer battalion and later the National Guard's foreign reconnaissance team, contributing to mine clearance efforts. Over time, his role shifted to teaching basic mine awareness and clearance due to the increasing use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and mines.
The conflict in Ukraine saw both sides employing mines and booby traps, resulting in casualties and the proliferation of instructional videos on social media. Ukraine is believed to be one of the most heavily mined countries globally, posing a significant challenge. Chris highlighted the danger of booby traps and the need for updated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to counter evolving tactics on both sides. He emphasized a shift towards remote clearance due to booby trap risks and the difficulties of dealing with mechanically laid minefields.
Chris urged fellow clearance workers to reevaluate their SOPs and consider the high risk of booby traps, even in mechanically laid minefields. His caution stems from concerns about shrapnel and hidden fragmentation hazards during detonations. Chris holds civilian IED and mine action qualifications from Kosovo, which he adapts for Ukraine's unique conditions. He strikes a balance between standardized safety protocols and practical on-the-ground safety measures.
Despite the limitations he faces, including the lack of helicopter, artillery, and vehicle support, Chris continues his vital work. He collaborates with various Ukrainian units, such as police, military, National Guard, and intelligence, adapting his approach based on their specific needs. Chris's connections, experience, and reputation grant him trust and access to military units for training and assistance.
He emphasizes that applying Western or NATO standards doesn't always align with Ukraine's conflict realities and limited resources. Chris's training efforts are urgent, as dedicated personnel for mine clearance are often lacking. He acknowledges the ever-changing dynamics and the volatile nature of Ukraine's conflict.
Chris's experiences shed light on the challenges and complexities of mine clearance and humanitarian efforts in conflict zones. His insights into tactics, technology, and threats in the Ukrainian conflict underscore the importance of support, awareness, and adaptation to evolving situations.

In Episode 17, EODC (ret) Kyle Masur talks about how he found out about EOD on Guam as a fleet sailor, went through the pipeline, and ultimately joined the ranks of Navy EOD. Once at EOD Mobile Unit 12 he was put on an NSW EOD team and did a grueling workup.
Once deployed to Afghanistan he encountered many IEDs, multiple firefights, exhaustion from a heavy workload, and had to take care of injured EOD and SEAL teammates. An intense 11-month deployment was made tolerable by the bond that hard times create. Somehow a heavy amount of laughter was enjoyed during those hard times.
After returning from the deployment he soon found his way to another team and deployed to Somalia. Not as intense as Afghanistan, he was able to enjoy some extracurricular like swimming with a whale shark.
Finishing out his navy career at Det Kings Bay, he talks about the Medical Board process that leads to his medical retirement. Once retired from the military his injuries didn't just go away. The physical and mental injuries he sustained caused a toll on his life. Kyle didn't just give in and was able to find some treatments that helped him significantly. He talks about those unconventional treatments in hopes to share them with others.

From scattered beginnings to an impressive legacy, CDR (ret) Lawrence (Larry) Ronan in episode 16 of the Echo Oscar Delta Podcast, quite literally made EOD his life's work. Joining the Navy in 1950, going to EOD school in 59', and finally retiring in 1979, that's not where his EOD career ended. In episode 9 of the podcast, we talk with the authors of the book Unsung: Quiet Voices of the US Navy's EOD Warriors and Their Families, Joseph Shaffer III and Dr. Paula Greene. They talked about how they came up with the idea to write the book and why they felt it was necessary. While there were some struggles from the beginning with Covid limiting the way interviews could be done, they pushed through and finished a book that tells the stories of US Navy EOD Operators from the Operator perspective. They are fascinating people who gave something to the Navy EOD community that was long overdue.

In Episode 7 EODCS (retired) Harry Basnight and I catch up, spending some time talking about being in EOD school together, as well as coming back together years later as instructors at Training Unit Two in FTX division. He discusses some influential people who helped him along his career and what it was like to get into a war zone and start going outside the wire. Harry was in the vehicle with Tony Randolph and Captain Mark Garner when they were killed and talks about what he remembers leading up to and from the incident.

In episode 6 I talk with Bill Nesbitt who served 28 years and retired as a Navy EOD Master Chief. He cleared underwater mines in the 80's, helped get funding for gear and training after 9/11, and has gone to war countless times. Bill talks about some of the most memorable experiences he's had in EOD, highlighting one of the most significant events in his career. It was an absolute pleasure to get to talk with him.

Joe Stutzke was an EOD Chief who did 9 years in the Navy before moving to the Philippines with his wife. He talks about how he could repurpose the skills learned as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician, including operations and logistics, homemade explosives, networking, and his understanding of chemicals and their interactions with living organisms. The underlying themes Joe discusses are reaching out to friends and looking for new ways to implement skills learned.

Pat Flanigan, a 14-year Navy Veteran, and EOD Chief sits down with us and talks about the importance of reaching out to the EOD family, how his mindset changed as time passed and his rank increased, the intensity of his time in Ramadi and an event that changed his life.
