Leah is a project manager at Allison-Smith Company. She works in the Charleston, SC office and has been there for 8 years. Most of her work in project management has been for hyperscale data center construction, both greenfield and renovation work. Prior to that, she was in consulting engineering for 6 years and is currently 1 of only 2 licensed PEs in South Carolina with the NCQLP lighting certification. She is a member of the Franklin Cohort of the NECA Innovation Institute, in addition to serving on the Women In NECA task force.

Safety in the workplace is critical in any job, but it is tough to achieve on a job that involves construction. Sites can be very dangerous environments as well as the work being very taxing. I reached out to see if Wes Wheeler, NECA’s Executive Director of Safety, could discuss the state of safety in construction. It didn’t take us long before mental health came up as the focus of our conversation. Wes shares his unique viewpoint on this important topic.
As always, when I discuss mental health, I want to remind you of resources made for those working through challenging mental health issues. Remember, these resources are also for you who want to come alongside your loved ones to support their journey.
There’s the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (phone and text) which offers 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors who can help people experiencing mental health-related distress.
There’s also the Crisis Text Line: Text HELLO to 741741. Every person who texts is connected with a crisis counselor who is trained to listen and offer sound advice 24/7 Both are free, confidential, and again if you’re struggling with mental health or concerned for a loved one.
Wes joined NECA in 2014 and has over 40 years of electrical experience. Prior to NECA, he was safety consultant in his own business and has been a Safety Director and OSHA Safety trainer for a large industrial based electrical contractor in Florida. Wesley is a qualified OSHA Construction Outreach Instructor and has assisted in OSHA Instructor classes for Electrical Training Alliance. Wes has served in many capacities in his career from electrician, foreman, superintendent, estimator, project manager to safety director and is a member of OSHA’s Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health (ACCSH). His credentials continue, but suffice to say, Wes knows and loves the construction world.

It seems we hear, in every other episode, about the need for qualified trained trades people. So, when I had a chance to speak with Marty Riesberg, Electrical Training Alliance Director, I jumped at the opportunity to understand the current state of technical training. The Electrical Training Alliance or ETA, created in 1941, to standardize the training for the NECA employers and the electricians that work for them so that they can be more mobile. They work with 300 Training Centers or JATC's across the country. Marty began his electrical training at Western Iowa Technical Community College, then worked for a residential contractor and joined the Omaha Joint Electrical Apprenticeship and Training Committee’s Inside Program. After completing the program, he became a Journeyman Inside Wireman. In 2001, he was named Assistant Training Director for the Omaha Electrical JATC and served as an instructor for seven years. A member of IBEW LU 22 since 1992, Marty joined the NJATC in 2006 to develop a Building Automation curriculum and later became Director of Curriculum Development, overseeing curricula for around 300 local training centers. He currently manages the electrical training ALLIANCE’s Training Partner Program. He holds a Bachelor's in Business Administration from the National Labor College and a Master’s in Leadership from Georgetown University. Marty and I are going to discuss how training is changing and where it’s moving forward to support the industry. Construction faces a crisis. Unfortunately, construction ranks as first or second on lists as one of the industries with the highest incidents of suicide.
Fortunately, the construction industry isn’t sitting idle. They’ve created many programs to support and come alongside all in the industry. I spoke to many different representatives from the industry about this topic to learn more. There was one name that was consistently mentioned as an expert working toward improvements in how mental health impacts construction, Dr. Sally Spencer-Thomas.
Dr. Sally Spencer-Thomas is a clinical psychologist, inspirational international speaker and an impact entrepreneur. She currently serves as the president of United Suicide Survivors International.

Construction projects are complex and no matter the size, there are risks of cost and deadline overruns. IT focused projects are no exception. Harvard Business Review states that at least one in six IT projects turn into a Black Swan with a cost overrun of 200%. A PWC study published on Forbes stated that there was an estimated $50-150 Billion in lost revenue from failed IT projects.
On this episode, I turn to Rick Stuart, Vice President, Security Solutions - Technology Center of Excellence with Vision Technologies. Rick shared with me some of the common pitfalls that cause a project to go off the rails and then shares ideas on how to avoid these on your next IT/Low-Voltage project. We even talk on one of my favorite topics, company culture.

Prefab is a topic so thoroughly discussed over the last 10 years that many start to tune it out when mentioned. After talking with Todd Grossweiler, Executive Vice President at Allison Smith Company about their approach to prefab, I wonder if we should start thinking of prefab not just as another process to complete projects, but as a vehicle to improve company culture.
- To build a great prefab process you should involve the entire team which increases employee buy-in and engagement.
- If done well, it can improve the working conditions of employees, which can improve job satisfaction.
- It can help the company run more efficiently which can help the bottom line and help the company win more business which helps the overall health of the enterprise for all involved.
Todd Grossweiler has been with the Allison-Smith Company for the past 22 years. Todd graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology where he received a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering. He continues to seek out ways to innovate through processes, technology, and people. Maintaining good relationships with both his internal team and external customers is the foundation for his success.
Todd believes that if you surround yourself with good people, then good things will happen. I sat down with Todd on the NECA convention showroom floor and our conversation energized me.

Without materials, a contractor can’t do their job. Material management goes beyond simply ordering and receiving the material. A well-thought-out material strategy and plan can go a long way in helping a contractor get their projects done efficiently and can also help the bottom line.

Most associations have an internal group that focuses on political advocacy. To learn a bit more about this side of the National Electrical Contractor Association, I asked Marco Giamberardino, NECA Senior Vice President of Government and Public Affairs, if he would spend a few minutes educating us on how he spends his days as an association lobbyist.
I met Marco at the NECA convention, so you will hear some of the background sounds of a convention setting. We recorded this in September of 2023 so a few of the topics discussed have resolved in one way or other, but I still wanted to share his thought process and how he views government operations in relation to the construction industry.
In addition to lobbying, Marco supervises numerous program areas, including advocacy, political fundraising, communications, marketing, and ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR magazine. Marco has been an active trade association professional and advocacy expert for over 30 years.
Marco was recognized as a Top Lobbyist for 2022 by the National Institute for Lobbying & Ethics.

Kim “KC” Campbell served in the Air Force for 24 years as a fighter pilot and senior military leader. She has flown 1,800 hours in the A-10 Warthog, including more than 100 combat missions protecting troops on the ground in both Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2003, Kim was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for Heroism after successfully recovering her battle-damaged airplane after an intense close air support mission. Most recently, Kim served as the Director of the Center for Character and Leadership Development at the Air Force Academy.
