Christoph Biermann (Beer) lives in Berlin and has been writing about football for almost four decades, from World Cup finals and lower leagues alike. He has worked for the Süddeutsche Zeitung and the Spiegel, today he is a reporter for the football magazine 11 FREUNDE. He has written more than a dozen award-winning books, "Football Hackers" has also been published in English. He loves VfL Bochum and therefore, not surprisingly, all outsiders and underdogs.
Raphael Honigstein (Honey) was born in Munich but has lived in London for almost three decades. He has written for many major newspapers in Germany and England and is now a Senior Writer at the The Athletic. He is also a television pundit on BT Sport and Sky in Germany. He has written several books and his biography of Jürgen Klopp has been published in 2387 countries. He’s got a thing for FC Bayern and beautiful football.
The FIFA World Cup of 2022 has ended for Germany's national team. Raphael Honigstein and Christoph Biermann know all about the reasons behind the second time in a row that Germany failed to qualify for the knock-out stage of the World Cup. To borrow from basketball philosophy: Defense wins championships, and Germany was lacking in that aspect of the game. We sent Raphael to Qatar to check out what's what at the World Cup, while Christoph has to get his insights from German TV. But no matter where you got to see Germany's loss in their opener against Japan, one thing was clear: this was not a game Germany should've lost. So, what happened? Let's start with the positives: Left Back David Raum aka Raumberto Carlos played a pivotal role in securing Germany's dominance and first goal in the first half, by playing essentially as a Winger. But things derailed in the second half, when Gündogan was taken off. Still, no matter how you look at it, those two goals for Japan should never have happened.
