In this episode, we're finally back after a few weeks off to evaluate the future of the DOM podcast. I share with you all my plans for the future of this show, the new name for the podcast, and the new focus, as well as a new cohost!.
In this episode, I just explain my need to take a break from the show for a few weeks and contemplate the future of this show. I was recently confronted with the reality that much of what's out there in podcasting is just regurgitation of what's already out there. I want to provide a show that's valuable and unique, and to do that, I'm going to take a hiatus in order to figure out how to better accomplish that.
In this episode I walk you through the four stages of competence. We'll look at how we develop from not knowing what we don't know, to having a skillset or knowledge base that is second nature. Join me in this episode as we learn to become the men God designed us to be by developing our core competencies using this framework!
In this episode we pour over a lot of verses to determine if knowledge is good or bad, how it can be used negatively, and how we combine both love and knowledge in order to use it to build others up.

In this episode we look at a different approach to prayer. Rather than coming to God with a list of requests or demands, and essentially treating God like a genie in a bottle we can approach God differently. A friend recently gave me a new framework for my prayer life and I'm already seeing God show me things. The three questions of the framework are:
1. God, what do you want me to know about today?
2. God, what do you want me to do with that?
3. God, is there anything in my life that is keeping me from being used by you?
Listen to this episode for my thoughts on this approach and how it's been impacting me.
In this episode I talk about the importance of letting your yes be yes, specifically where planning our time is concerned. I talk about the 6 reasons I think it's important to plan your day, and I give an overview of how to plan your day if it's not something you've done in the past.
In this episode I talk about my experience at a recent prayer breakfast I attended and our discussion about Jonathan in 1 Samuel 14. Jonathan was a son of the king of Israel, and he boldly stepped out in faith and made a huge impact on his nation, and ultimately impacted many men to step up in their lives and better fulfill the roles God was calling them to! We look at 4 types of men: those who have turned away from what they know is right, those living in fear, encourager roles, and leaders who step out boldly in faith. I also cover four steps we should take in our own journeys to become a Jonathan in our spheres of influence.

How is it that we become men who are exceptional? In this episode I talk about how it's not the results that make us exceptional, but doing things everyday that are the exception rather than the norm.
In this episode, I interview Brant Hansen. Brant Hansen is an author, nationally syndicated radio host, and advocate for healing children through CURE International.
His first book, Unoffendable, has prompted a national discussion on the idea of forgiveness, and our culture’s embrace of self-righteous anger.
His second book, both provocative and very personal, is Blessed are the Misfits: Great News for Those Who Are Introverts, Spiritual Strugglers, or Just Feel Like They’re Missing Something. In this book, Hansen addresses his own, and many others’, inability to “feel God’s presence”, and how God might Himself feel about that.
He has written for CNN.com, The Washington Post, U.S. News and World Report, The South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Relevant, and numerous other outlets on matters as varied as public policy, culture, sports, Asperger’s Syndrome, and faith. Our phones are meant to be a tool that we use to be more productive, solve problems, or stay connected with friends and family. But, these tools are becoming more and more of a nuisance than a help. In many cases, smartphone use is leading to sleep problems, depression, loneliness, increased stress and anxiety, impaired focus, and self-absorption. In this episode we’ll cover how to rid yourself of digital distraction and how to master this tool instead of allowing it to master you.
I share my takeaway from conversation with a friend where he shared with me the concept that we don't always see things the way they are, but the way we are. Join me in this episode as I share my takeaways from our conversation, and how we should accurately look at things in our life!

This episode is a follow up to last week's where we talk about Becoming the Man in the Arena. Here we discuss how we respond to success and failure once we've gotten into the arena. Join me in this episode as I share my thoughts on what we do when we win and what action steps we take when we fail.
Many of us have heard of Teddy Roosevelt's speech, The Man in the Arena. In this episode I want to dive into the importance of becoming the man in the arena; not so we can be the best or build up our ego, but so we can be refined by the effort and the competition.
In this episode, I discuss the concept found in John 15:5 where Jesus tells his disciples, "...without me, you can do nothing." We can do nothing without God enabling us to do it, and in this episode I remind all of us, myself first of all, that we can do nothing without God. We can work like it all depends on us, but we trust, live and believe like it all depends on God.... because it does!
It’s never that hard for us to figure out what we want to have. We want to have a nicer house, or a better car or truck. We want to have a family. We want to have a bigger paycheck. We want to have a better physique! We can all identify pretty easily what we want to have. But there is more to it than just identifying what we want. In this episode, I’m going to share a powerful principle that I recently learned that will help us achieve more and ultimately get what we want.
If you’re listening to this podcast, there’s a better chance than not that you want to be considered a good man; a man of value and integrity; a man who knows how to be assertive and take ownership of everything in his life… even his mistakes. In this episode, we’re talking about a particular skill that is often overlooked and misrepresented and misunderstood in society. It’s something that is rarely taught properly, but if you’re going to be a man of integrity, you have to know how to do this right. You must know how to apologize for your mistakes.
We all want to believe that we are talented, capable, and strong. We often see ourselves as the hero in the movie that can overcome any obstacle, beat any problem, and outwit or outfight the villain. But our assessments of our own abilities are often skewed so that we overestimate ourselves. To become the men God created us to be, we have to see ourselves as we truly are, identify our weaknesses, and develop plans to improve on them. In this episode, we’ll talk about why we tend to overestimate ourselves, and some tactics on how to evaluate ourselves more objectively.
In this episode we talk about the importance of not being needy men. So many men crave affirmation, admiration and recognition so much that they can't function without it. They're constantly slaves to the attention of others, or to acquiring the next greatest thing. Being needy is not attractive, and we have to become men who are sure in our relationship with God in order to become the kind of men God wants us to be. We have to alter our schedules, reshape habits, and take thoughts captive to refocus our attention where it needs to be... on an audience of one!
In this episode I interview my wife, Wendy Hornback, about how to pursue a woman. Whether it's your first date, or your wife of 20 years, we should be pursuing the woman in our life! Wendy and I discuss how to start a relationship, and things to pay attention to as well as how to continue being a student of your wife after years of marriage.
We all want to feel like we belong, and like we have a circle of friends that truly care about us. Yet so many men admit that they feel like they don’t really have any close friends; like no one really knows them; or they don’t know who they would call if they were really in a jam. We often feel like we’re just too busy with life and we can’t make time for these types of relationships. In this episode, I talk about the four steps I've taken in my life to intentionally grow my relationships with other men and ultimately create a network of relationships that serve others and help me as I seek to grow as well.
We all want to look like we have it all together, like we’re competent, and confident. We want to look and feel like a success. But we view failure as a black mark on our record, and we believe that because we failed, we aren't good enough. Those feelings prevent us from trying new things and ultimately hold us back from doing what we're capable of accomplishing! In this episode I discuss how to reframe failure and view it as a positive for getting in the arena and trying something new; how to review your attempts at new things to find your weaknesses and over come them; and how to finish your failure!
In this episode I interview weightlifting coach, certified CrossFit trainer and nutrition coach, Alex Casetta about how to find the right gym for you, and how to build muscle and lose fat. We also discuss establishing systems over setting goals, and how having the right systems, or tactics, in place will make you far more effective than just setting a goal. Alex also is the owner of Nutri-Dynamix (https://www.nutridynamix.com/) a completely dairy-free protein supplement.
For too many men, nutrition is nothing short of a mystery. It often feels like we're trying to put together a puzzle without know what the picture should look like. In this episode, we demystify some of the nutrition puzzle by talking with Evan Berwick. Evan recently finished his education in nutrition and is working on becoming a nutrition coach. Evan helps us better understand what a healthy lifestyle is and how we can improve ourselves through eating clean, nutritious meals, and avoiding processed foods.
Too many men make New Year's resolutions that ultimately are nothing more than just a wish that something would happen. Rather than making meaningless wishes, you should be setting goals and objectives that you WILL accomplish because you've made them SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time bound). In this episode I explain how to go about setting SMART goals and how to set tactics in place that you can execute daily to ensure that you accomplish your goals within your stated deadline. I also get into a tool that has been very influential in my life in helping me achieve more than I have in the years prior to using it.
Regret can be a debilitating feeling that holds us back from moving on and healing in our lives and prevents us from accomplishing the very things we already regret not getting accomplished! In this episode, we talk about how to "finish your failure" and take action to move on from regret. For those with more significant regrets, we also address the issue of getting counseling where needed, how admitting you need help isn't weakness, and how you can be freed from regret by knowing Jesus Christ.
It's important to know the six people that will ultimately carry your coffin one day. Analyzing our relationships through this lens will put our relationships in a new perspective that will ultimately allow us to know where to put our time and energy, and how we will use our influence. In this episode, I explain my thoughts on how to evaluate your relationships and decide on the men that will ultimately carry your coffin when your time on earth is done!
As Christian men, we are missing the mark on how we show up and live out Biblical masculinity. When we get this wrong it creates a downward spiral for our wives, children, and all of society around us. It's crucial that we get this right and stop twisting Biblical masculinity into something that suits our personal desires and preferences. In this episode I pontificate on an article from GotQuestions.org about "What is Biblcal Manhood?" and the five principles outlined in that article that will help us get this right!
It's crucial that we take time and finances and invest in ourselves. If we don't believe we're worth the investment, no one else will either. In this episode, I talk about the importance of investing in yourself, and your relationships, and how doing so has helped make me more productive and achieve greater things than ever before, and I encourage you to do the same!
The secret to building motivation is action! We have to consistently show up and take action if we want to build motivation and stay motivated to continue our habits of faith, friendships, fitness and finances. Tune in to this week's episode to understand how feelings follow our behavior.
Medical emergencies are a reality many of us will face at some point or another. As men, we should be who others come to for help in these situations. While we likely can't be suited to tackle ALL medical emergencies, being equipped and prepared to handle mecical issues around the home or during recreational activities means we are capable and able to add a great deal of value to the world around us. In this episode, I interview Dr. Jared Gamet who has been an emergency room doctor for the past 11 years, and he helps us gain some valuable knowledge on how we can be best prepared to be an asset in a variety of scenarios.
The affirmation trap can be characterized by positive thinking about oneself to cause us to believe better things about who we are, and what we can accomplish. By believing positive things about ourselves, we will feel more positive about who we are and that will ultimately lead us to success. Affirmation can also be a trap we fall prey to by becoming a slave to the affirmation of others. In this episode, I discuss the dangers of the affirmation trap, and how we as believers should approach this topic from a biblical perspective.
In this episode, I talk about some observations from a men's retreat I attended. I discuss how common it is that men struggle with feelings of isolation and depression, and feeling like we don't measure up. I also discuss how Jesus is the only way in which we can measure up, and the importance of knowing him and changing our behavior to better reflect Christ's model for our lives. I also challenge you to reach out to other men to talk about your struggles and listen for how you can support other men in their struggles in order to defeat the feelings of isolation and loneliness so many men feel.
In this episode we talk about God's will for our lives. We discuss the five aspects covered in John MacArthur's book, Found: God's Will. These aspects are clearly found in God's word (the Bible), and we can know that these five aspects are absolutely God's desire for us without a shadow of doubt. We also discuss the freedom we have in choosing some of the direction in our life after these aspects are met.
In this episode, we discuss the importance of knowing what you want, and the importance of communicating it. I put this brief talk into practice by communicating my desire for this show, what it truly exists for, and what I want to see happen because of it.
Too often, men don’t know what they stand for, or why. As men, we must have a rock solid understanding of who we are, what we stand for, and where our boundaries are, and then enforce those boundaries with vigilance! In this episode, we will be talking about the importance of developing an ethos, how to do it, and most importantly how to live by it!

Often, in our world today, people consider gestures like taking one’s hat off indoors or opening the door for a lady are outdated, antiquated, sexist, or just too traditional. But in this episode I want to make a case for having a gentleman's code of conduct, and why it’s beneficial not just to us as men, but to society around us. Join me in this episode as we explore what gentleman’s code is, why it’s important, the value it brings, and the need for its resurgence.
As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. We need other men in our corner. We need to have a band of brothers around us that we contribute to, and build up, and who in turn build us up. In this episode we continue the concept of building relationships that we started last week, and I interview Dean Miller the head pastor at Front Range Baptist Church. We identify what it means to be an extrovert, how sometimes, being an extrovert can be a hindrance to relationships, how we can use our liabilities as assets to build better connections, and how we work to get out of our own way in relationship building.
Building relationships with other men is one of the core elements of becoming the men that God has called us to be. We all have different personalities and some of our traits can help us or hinder us in building relationships with others. This is the first of two episodes discussing how we can build relationships as both introverts and extroverts. In this episode, I interview Brent Bartlett, the administrative pastor of Front Range Baptist Church in Fort Collins CO. We discuss what it means to be an introvert, some of the pros and cons of this personality type, and how to overcome some of the obstacles or introvertedness.
I interview John Van Der Vliet in this episode to talk about the effects after a shooting and how it impacts you, the perpetrator, and the communities of both parties. John speaks to us from his personal experiences as a former police officer and military veteran. The aftermath is much farther reaching than most of us realize, and if you conceal carry, or are planning to do so, this episode is perfect for you so you can best prepare yourself and your family for what's to come. We also talk about how to best handle the emotional, mental, and spiritual impacts a shooting has on a person, and how to handle it in a positive and healthy manner.
In this episode we review an article from Psychology Today about "The Problem of Loneliness" and how it is impacting men in particular. We discuss what this means for us as Christians, and how we can work to be part of the solution rather than the problem!
What drives you in life? The desire to win? Or, the fear of losing?! In this episode we explore if it is okay to want to win in life, or if it's selfish and sinful to have the desire to win. We also talk about the benefit to having a desire to win as well as how to develop that desire if it's something you're lacking.
In this episode, I talk about the importance of getting in your reps! This is an important concept physically, but also just as important spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, and relationally. Be sure to get in the practice and build the "muscle memory" required to perform and show up the way you want to when it matters most.
In this episode I take you through some points to consider before you decide to carry a concealed weapon. Then, if you decide you're willing to take on the responsibility, some additional things to consider once you've made that decision. This isn't legal advice in any way, but just some points to think about that have been helpful for me as I evaluated that decision. We'll talk about other things you should be doing in addition to preparing to carry a weapon, like self defense training, medical or first aid training, etc. If you're on the fence about whether or not to carry a concealed weapon, this episode is for you!

In this episode, I discuss the importance of using your talents to adding value to the world around you! It's easy to overlook the value we can bring just by showing up and using the talent we have. I give a brief overview of the Parable of the Talents in the book of Matthew, and then extrapolate on that in how we are supposed to grow our talents and create a return on the investment God has given us. In our day and age, we are living in a time of gender misidentification, or what I would refer to as sex misidentification. Society around us is confusing masculine and feminine roles, sexes, and insisting that you can determine your own “gender.” We’re confused on our roles in marriage and society, and what should even be included in those roles. In this episode we discuss what is a man, both physiologically and the role we are meant to fulfill, and 5 key aspects of biblical manhood.

We then get into complacency in our own lives, what it is, how we slip into becoming complacent and then the six specific things we can do to prevent, avoid, or get out of complacency in our lives.
In this episode we discuss the balance of faith and preparation. Too often we see these things as diametrically opposed, and that it's either one or the other. But in this show we look deeper at a few instances when a life of preparation has actually complemented the opportunities to step out in faith. Join me in this episode as we look for ways to prepare ourselves for future opportunities to see God move through our readiness to step forward in faith!
In this episode we discuss my recent experience at youth camp and the reciprocal value of working with teenagers. I share some lessons I learned and took away from the camp experience. And, the main content is focusing on the difference between simply gaining knowledge (e.g. learning), and applying knowledge (or living).
