Today's episode is a little light, and yes, we do talk about farts.
We were delighted to get this question which brings the idea of humor into caregiving, which is something that we don't talk about often, but it is so very important. If this man laughs at farts, wife, go for it.

In today's episode, we are joined by Dr. Marc Alderdice, PhD who has worked in academia and with pharmaceutical companies, having even managed clinical trials for potential treatments of Alzheimer’s disease. We discuss how he learned the hard way that living with Alzheimer's personally, is much different and more difficult than studying it objectively. His book, "Don't Forget to Dance, a unique Alzheimer's journey from bizarre to blissful", takes us on his emotional journey, and shows us how we can dance more and be happier, no matter what life throws our way.

We have mentioned many times on our podcasts how contrasting colors may help people with dementia because of their vision being affected by these devastating brain diseases. Just one such example would be having mashed potatoes on a dark colored plate so the loved one can see the food better.

In today's episode, we talk with guest Sara McCunnie about the use of color and pattern in dementia design. Sara comes to us from New Zealand and is a registered architect in both New Zealand and Australia. In this episode, Bobbi and Mike talk with Darlene Fuchs who watched both of her parents struggle with dementia and shares the invaluable lessons learned along the way. She hopes her story of their memory becomes a source of inspiration for others facing similar challenges in their lives.

Following her mother's (Gail) dementia diagnosis, her father (Richard) became her primary caregiver, showing extraordinary affection and unwavering commitment to his beloved wife. Richard's passion for journaling later became a source of comfort and connection for the entire family. Darlene knew that her parents' story of enduring love was worth sharing and wanted to honor their legacy by showing the world what love and devotion looked like, even in the face of adversity.

Drawing on Richard's daily journal entries, Darlene wrote "Get In The Boat", a powerful and poignant memoir that captures the impact of dementia on her parents' lives and their family. It is a story of resilience in the face of life's most difficult encounters. It narrates the tale of a man who loved his wife so much that he confronted the complexities of caring for a loved one with a life-altering affliction, while experiencing the spiritual strength that sustained him through the most trying of times.

Welcome to Dementia Spotlight! tips, truths, and straight talk about Alzheimer’s and the many other forms of dementia.

Interesting and informative guests will join us on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month. On the opposite Wednesdays, we will provide straight talk about what people need to know before and after caregiving begins, including controversial issues others tend to avoid

After Mike's mother passed away in July 2002, Bobbi and Mike took in Rodger, Mike's father and quickly realized they were unprepared for the demands of caring for someone with dementia. For the next seven years, Bobbi and Mike were on the emotional roller coaster that is dementia care, and during that time, they gained knowledge of dementia and dementia behaviors and as Bobbi often says, "learned how to creative problem solve on the run."

When Rodger passed away in July 2009, Bobbi and Mike have dedicated their lives to sharing their personal journey and learning all they can in order to support other dementia caregivers. Bobbi has achieved certifications as a Caregiver Consultant (CCC) and Caregiver Educator (CCE); Mike has achieved certifications as Caregiver Advocate (CCA) and Music Therapist (CMT).

With Dementia Spotlight, they will offer emotional support, practical tips and coping mechanisms to caregivers who often find themselves overwhelmed with fatigue, grief and even anger.

Caregiving comes naturally to Bobbi. "I come from a long line of caregivers, starting with my Great Grandmother's sister, Nellie, who took in my grandmother's newborn sister when their mother died in childbirth. Since then every generation has had at least one person caring for loved ones. Family takes care of family is ingrained in our beliefs. That doesn't mean it's right for everyone. Being a home caregiver is incredibly hard and no one should feel guilty if they choose to allow others to step in. Not everyone is cut out to wrestle alligators while herding a dozen cats and being constantly tuned in to another's needs when sleep deprived and in desperate need to go to the bathroom."
