Welcome to our new series, Stories from Sunday School. 📝 These are the stories many of us learned as children, but they contain layers of meaning that are often overlooked. In this episode, we begin with one of the Bible's most familiar accounts—Noah's Ark. ⛈️

Far more than a children's story, the flood narrative explores humanity's corruption, God's judgment, the preservation of creation, and the hope of a new beginning. 🌈 Along the way, we discuss the Nephilim, the symbolism of the ark, the significance of the forty-day pattern, and why the raven and the dove serve as a deliberate response to the Epic of Gilgamesh. 🕊️

If you think you already know the story of Noah, this episode may surprise you. Join us as we revisit this familiar account through the eyes of the ancient world and discover why its deepest message is just as relevant today. 🎙️

We originally released this episode on our YouTube channel, but are making it available on our podcast during our break. 🎙️In this episode, we step into the darker, original version of Sleeping Beauty. 👸Together, we uncover how the King and Queen’s attempt to protect their daughter from a curse leads instead to a kingdom frozen in stasis—safe, but barren and lifeless. 🧊 We explore the symbolic weight of numbers, the danger of exclusion, and what this story reveals about overprotection, both in personal life and in society at large. Sleeping Beauty is more than a bedtime story. It’s a meditation on growth, change, and the cost of refusing what is new. ✨

In this final episode of our Minor Prophets series, we explore the strange and powerful visions of Zechariah, a prophet speaking to a people who have physically returned home but remain spiritually displaced. ✨ Through symbols of cleansing, restoration, and renewal, Zechariah reveals that rebuilding a culture begins long before stones are laid and walls are raised. 🏛️

We explore why external change rarely produces lasting transformation, why true renewal begins within, and how Zechariah's message still speaks to cultures, communities, and individuals trying to rebuild after failure. 🙏 As we conclude our Minor Prophets series, we discover a recurring pattern found throughout these ancient books: before restoration can transform the world around us, it must first transform the world within us. 🎙️

In this episode, we continue our Minor Prophets series with the book of Habakkuk, a unique prophecy that takes the form of a conversation between the prophet and God. 📖 Set in the years before Babylon’s conquest of Judah, Habakkuk wrestles with a question that still resonates today: Why does God seem silent in the face of injustice?

We explore Habakkuk’s struggle with violence, corruption, and the rise of Babylon, along with God’s surprising response that evil ultimately carries the seeds of its own destruction. Along the way, we reflect on the meaning of “the righteous will live by faithfulness” and Habakkuk’s remarkable journey from questioning to trust. 🌿 Even in the midst of uncertainty and loss, the prophet discovers a deeper reason for hope and joy. ✨

In this episode, we continue our Minor Prophets series with the book of Micah, exploring how corruption and injustice slowly unravel a society from within. 📖 Set against the backdrop of Assyria’s rise and the coming exile, Micah confronts the political and spiritual failures of Judah’s leaders, exposing exploitation, false security, and the devastating cost of systemic corruption. 🏛️

Along the way, we unpack Micah’s vivid courtroom and apocalyptic imagery, his warning that Jerusalem itself would fall, and his powerful vision of restoration—where swords become plowshares and a ruler will arise from Bethlehem. ✨ We also reflect on Micah’s enduring call to “act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly.” 🎙️

In this episode, we continue our Minor Prophets series with the book of Hosea, exploring a recurring biblical pattern—God brings order, people distort it, prophets call for repentance, and when ignored, collapse and renewal follow. 📖

We place Hosea in the final days of the Northern Kingdom and unpack his striking story: a commanded marriage to Gomer that becomes a living parable of covenant unfaithfulness. Through the symbolic names of his children and his costly act of redemption, we see both the depth of human brokenness and the persistence of God’s grace. 💔✨

Along the way, we reflect on exile as a form of reset and God’s refusal to abandon His people, ending with Hosea’s call to return. We also preview our next stop—Micah. 🎙️

We kick off a new series on the Minor Prophets with the book of Joel, exploring how prophets function less as fortune-tellers and more as pattern readers—revealing what is already unfolding within a culture. 🔮

We walk through Joel’s vivid description of a locust-driven collapse, showing how it touches every layer of life—economy, worship, and joy—and how his call to repentance is not performative, but a true recalibration of the heart. 🦗 Along the way, we explore the “Day of the Lord” as a repeating pattern of disruption, repentance, and restoration, connecting Joel’s vision to Pentecost and to the cycles we still experience today. 🌿

Join us as we begin uncovering the timeless patterns hidden within these often-overlooked prophetic books. ✨

In this episode of the Navigating An Ancient Faith Podcast, we revisit how to read Jesus’ parables, resisting the modern urge to pull out a quick moral. 📖 We explore the setting of Luke 15, where the Pharisees criticize Jesus for welcoming “tax collectors and sinners,” and unpack the parable of the Prodigal Son. We also connect these themes to the Workers in the Vineyard (Matthew 20), reflecting on envy, generosity, and the upside-down nature of God’s kingdom. 🍇 Finally, we briefly consider Jesus’ parables about persistent prayer in Luke 11 and Luke 18, exploring how they challenge distorted views of God and reframe faith as a relationship rather than a transaction. ✨ Join us as we continue our series on the Parables of Jesus, uncovering the deeper layers hidden within these familiar stories. 🎙️

Unearth the unseen battles within the Psalms! It might be easy to associate the Psalms with worship music and poetry.  Yet hidden beneath obscure references and our modern translations are numerous polemics against the pagan gods of other nations.  Make no mistake: when Yahweh led the Israelites out of Egypt and into the Promised Land, the surrounding deities trembled.  In this episode, we survey several of the Psalms that declare that Yahweh is the true King of glory.

When the Psalms refer to the mountain of God or God's holy hill, which mountain is it referring to?  Were these references merely poetic whispers, or do they carry deeper revelations?  By understanding what the mountain represented to the ancient mind, we are able to better understand what the Biblical writers of the Psalms meant by the many references to the mountain of God.  Let's unravel the layers of meaning woven into this imagery and gain a fresh perspective on the Psalms' profound messages.

The ancient Greek philosophy of Stoicism is making a comeback in modern times.  Stoicism offers a compelling pathway to virtue, but does it tell the whole story?  As opposed to Stoicism, Christianity does tell the whole story - at least in the minds of believers.  But within that story, can Christians learn to pull out a structured path to becoming better people?  What can the two learn from each other, or are they incompatible?  In this episode, we discuss some of these ideas.

In modern society, we have a wealth of information at our fingertips.  We have more information at our disposal than most rulers or kings had throughout history.  But are we using that information wisely and what have we sacrificed?  In this episode, we discuss the trade-off between information and concentration, and how we can begin to recapture the ancient ability to attend to a subject for long periods of time.

Finishing our survey of the major themes in the New Testament book of Colossians, we discuss one phrase in Colossians 4 that is easy to overlook.  In Colossians 4:16 Paul instructs the church to share this letter with the church in Laodicea and to read the letter that was sent to them.  So what happened to the letter to Laodicea?  And what does it mean that we don't have it?  We wrap up the series discussing these questions, as well as taking a look at what happened to the church in Colossae.

In Colossians 3, the Apostle Paul helps the church reconnect with their faith.   He does so by symbolically walking them through their baptism ceremony.  The original hearers would have also seen the similarities between baptism and an initiation rite into a mystery religion.  The old person had died and their new life was now hidden with Christ.

View Details

Continuing our journey through the New Testament book of Colossians we explore chapter 2 through the lens of the original hearers.  The Apostle Paul mentions several activities as shadows compared to the reality of Christ.  To a Greco Roman audience this would have echoes of Plato and the Allegory of the Cave.  Does this background help shed light on what Paul was trying to communicate to the Colossian church?

View Details

We begin our journey through the New Testament book of Colossians by examining the main theme of chapter 1 through the lens of the original hearers.  The Hymn to Christ is well known to readers of the Bible.  But one of the primary ways the Apostle Paul is using this hymn is to retell the creation story.  What would a creation story have meant to a Greco-Roman audience?  How do we understand this hymn as Paul was intending to utilize it?

In this final recap of our trip to Greece in October 2022, we discuss The Descent.  What does it look like to experience the sacred and then return to normal life?  While we are tempted to capture that experience in the moment or recreate an experience for others, those attempts rarely work.  So what are we supposed to bring home with us?  In this episode, we discuss our take-aways from the trip, but also discuss that larger issue of how encountering the sacred should change us.

On a recent trip to Greece, we visited the site of Philippi.  While there, the traditional site of St. Paul's prison, mentioned in Acts 16, was being questioned.  This led to a discussion on the tension between facts and meaning.  If the actual site of the prison in Philippi is revealed to be elsewhere, does that mean that the traditional site, which has been a place of worship for centuries, loses all its meaning?  We discuss these questions on this episode of Navigating An Ancient Faith.

Upon returning from Greece in October of 2022, David and JR discuss an unmistakable pattern they saw on the trip.  In order to reach many of the sacred sites they visited, a person had to ascend to a high place.  This pattern was consistent in both pagan and Christian sites.  What can we take from this pattern and how might it apply to our own worship experiences in today's modern world?

In October of 2022, we traveled to Greece to explore Biblical sites.  We quickly saw a pattern emerging that to reach sacred sites, the person had to ascend to a high place.  In Meteora, Greece, we paused to reflect on that idea of The Ascent, and what it might mean for our worship in today's world.
