Memories of hockey played by rural children during the 1950's and 60's in Black River. Whereever there was a frozen pond hockey was played.

Story written by Zane Long, voiced and recorded by Ian Purdy. Ed Schofield added the sound effects.

Zane added a little bit of information following the story:

" One time Bruce Long used his grandfather's (Leverett Long) grinder in the blacksmith shop to sharpen my skates.  Although Bruce said he'd "just touch them up a little", he ground the sides of the blades such that all I could do after that was skate in a straight line.  Turning was impossible. It took a little work to get those blades back to a more or less proper edge."

Emily Levy Purdy played guitar, sang and recorded "The Stormy Scenes of Winter".

"The Stormy Scenes of Winter" was collected by Carrie B. Grover in her book " A Heritage of Songs". She notes: ... I have never heard the song outside my own family and have never heard the answer to it."

Carrie was born in Black River in 1879. When she was twelve years old she with her family moved to Maine. She never forgot her roots in Black River and the many songs she learned . Her parents realized that their old family songs were fast disappearing and on different occasions they would ask her to remember special songs. She later wrote a manuscript of her life in Black River and compiled her songbook.

During her lifetime Carrie was recorded by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress, Washington, USA and she also appeared as a ballad singer in folk festivals in Philadelphia and in Boston Garden.
