Before the time of Video recording and such, there were two companies that ventured into alternative media to allow children to watch a show at home! Chad Valley and GAF (Viewmaster) made that possible. The Doctor Who Give-A-Show Projector from 1965 and Viewmaster Dr. Who Full Circle and Castrovalva in 1982/83. I also provide full updates on Chicago Tardis this November. Just in, Chicago Tardis is requiring Masks this year as a precaution. Be sure to get a 3D mask so you can talk.

1979 was a tough year for the world with high inflation and gasoline prices doubling! It was a good year for Dr. Who. Tom Baker's Doctor in his 2nd year in the USA and now rural parts of Canada. WH Allen decided to reprint 1 book and print 8 new books this year. Not even keeping pace with 1 per month. Nelson-Doubleday works with Pinnacle to produce a book club hardcover of 3 stories only available in the USA. Tony Whitt and I go through the list in publication order with Tony giving perspective on the actual stories. Larry talks about book conditions and values. These books are very expensive to procure. This will also be the last year you see a cover by Chris Achilleos.

These hardcover books now go for big bucks on the secondary market and sometimes the reason is a head scratcher. The late Jackie Lane (1941-2021) portrayed the character Dorothea "Dodo" Chaplet in Dr. Who from "The Massacre" part 4 to "The War Machines" Part 2. She would never attend more than one Dr. Who convention and did not participate in any DVD commentary. In 1977, 17 hardcover novels were published for Dr. Who under the Allan Wingate imprint. This will be the final year for Allan Wingate and the last year for most reprints. Some of the books listed are only rumored to exist so we still seek proof of life. While obtaining all 17 from this year are very difficult and expensive, some collectors will pay to get them. Join me and Professor of Target Bookology, Tony Whitt (host and producer of the Dr. Who Target Book Club Podcast, for a deep dive into these books. Wyndham publishers put out a total of 4 hardcover books in 1974 and 1975 using the Allan Wingate imprint. They increased that number to 10 in 1976. These hardcover releases mirror the Target paperback imprints exactly. The growing popularity of Dr. Who in 1976 is clearly evident. The demand for these titles in hardcover is shown by the high prices these are demanding even in ex-library condition. Sometimes you have something that you might not consider a collectible. This convention program helped make history and is more valuable to me than anything else. In 1983 I attended my first Dr. Who Convention put on by Chicago Comicon. It was amazing, but the program had important information about every fan club in Chicago.
Many private collectors became heroes by giving us The War Machines Part 2 and Evil of the Daleks Part 2. Some have chosen not to share their missing stories with the world. Is this right? Allan Wingate published hardcover books for a long time. They stopped in 1959. In 1974, the company decided to publish only two books the entire year. Thankfully, they were Dr. Who books! The Auton Invasion and the Cave Monsters were the only two published by Allan Wingate in 1974. It was so successful, they published two more in 1975!
