What happens when compassion, science, and family come together to reshape the way we understand addiction?

In this powerful episode, I talk with Dr. Carrie Wilkens co-founder of the Center for Motivation and Change (CMC) and co-author of Beyond Addiction: How Science and Kindness Help People Change.

We talk about the origins of CMC and how that created a blueprint that challenged the “tough love” approach so many families have been told is their only option. Together, we explore what has changed in addiction science over the past decade, what remains misunderstood, and how kindness continues to transform lives.

You’ll hear us dig into:

• What’s new in the 10th Anniversary Edition of Beyond Addiction—and how the science has evolved in the last decade.

• Why relapse doesn’t erase progress and how parents can reframe it in ways that bring more peace of mind.

• The harmful oversimplification of “choice” in addiction and how to think about it in a more accurate and compassionate way.

• How parents can move beyond the paralyzing fear of “enabling” and make decisions that truly serve their family.

This is a conversation filled with wisdom, validation, and forward-looking hope for families who want a different path. One based on connection, science, and love.

When you’re parenting a child who struggles with substances, it can feel like you don’t have a choice. The options in front of you often feel terrible, and the weight of helplessness colors everything.

I know this firsthand—during the years of my daughter Helanna’s substance use, I felt like my life was completely at the effect of hers. Without a sense of agency, everything felt horrific, like there was no “in-between”—just unbearable.

But the truth is even when you don’t like your options, you are still choosing. And recognizing that changes everything. It shifts you from powerless to empowered. It brings back agency, softens the edges of the pain, and helps you move forward instead of feeling consumed by chaos.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

•Why it feels like you don’t have a choice (and the real difference between “I don’t like my choices” and “I don’t have choices”).

•How every decision has both a cost and a benefit—and how naming those trade-offs can ease resentment and regret.

•The concept of choice stacking.

•Why waiting for certainty keeps you stuck, and how clarity actually comes after you decide.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, powerless, or waiting for your child to change before you can breathe again, this episode will help you take your power back in a compassionate, grounded way.

Guest Colleen Freeland opens up about her 20-year struggle with daily drinking, even while maintaining what looked like a “perfect” high-achieving life. She shares the pivotal moment when she realized alcohol wasn’t the real problem—it was what she believed about herself—and that what she truly needed was to do less, not more.

That insight led her to create a whole new approach to change. In this episode, Colleen explains why emotional sobriety matters more than willpower, why drinking less doesn’t mean giving up joy, and how she helps women cut back by up to 80% with tools that calm the nervous system and rebuild self-trust.

This is not another story about “just quitting.” Colleen shows why emotional sobriety is the missing piece for so many women, how cutting back can feel empowering, and what it really means to get happy, not sober.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in shame, perfectionism, or the belief that alcohol is the only problem—you’ll walk away from this conversation with hope, clarity, and a whole new way to think about change.

If you’ve ever decided not to give your child money and still felt like your heart was being ripped out so you said yes anyway… this episode is for you.

In this episode, I’m unpacking what really happens when we stop giving from a place of survival, and why that decision can feel so excruciating, even when we know it’s right.

Learn:

• Why saying no can feel like you're severing the last thread of connection

• What your child might be experiencing at a nervous system level when you say no

• The Survival Cycle that keeps moms stuck in guilt, resentment, and exhaustion

• And the new pattern I call the Connection Cycle that helps you relate in a way that’s aligned with true connection, love, and your values

This episode is not about judgment.

It’s not about telling you what to do.

It’s about helping you understand why it feels so hard to stop, even when you’ve already decided that giving isn’t truly helping.

And it’s about offering a new path forward where you don’t have to choose between your peace and your child.

Guilt is one of the most common emotions parents face when their child is struggling with addiction, but is it always telling the truth?

In this episode, I’m sharing some personal reflections and hard-won realizations about guilt: how it became my default emotion, how it blocked me from feeling what was actually true, and what happened when I finally stepped out of guilt and into my true emotions that guilt was covering up.

You'll learn:

  • The difference between helpful guilt and default guilt
  • Why guilt keeps you from meeting your needs
  • How guilt dysregulates your nervous system and keeps you stuck
  • A practical 3-step process to work through guilt
  • Why releasing guilt doesn’t mean you’re excusing the past, it means you’re free to grow from it

If guilt has become your constant companion, this episode will help you begin to untangle it from the truth. You don’t have to punish yourself to prove you care.

Today we’re tackling one of the most painful questions parents face when their child is struggling with substance use - "Should I kick them out?"

You’ll hear why this question is far more complicated than it’s often made out to be and why it deserves careful thought, not quick advice based on outdated, stigmatized ideas like "tough love" or "rock bottom."

In this episode, Heather shares:

  • Why the words we use when making hard decisions affect how we feel and show up
  • What factors to consider before asking your child to leave, including safety, emotional health, and recovery capital
  • How to recognize when fear, guilt, or pressure might be influencing your choices
  • What it looks like to thoughtfully create a transition if your child can’t safely stay at home
  • Why honoring your own values and your child's right to self-determination leads to decisions you can live with

If you’ve ever felt trapped between two terrible options, letting chaos continue in your home or kicking your child out into the unknown, this episode will help you decide what’s best for you and your family.

For years, I lived with my peace tied directly to my daughter Helanna’s addiction. When she struggled, I felt powerless, sick, exhausted, and consumed by fear. But everything began to shift when I realized that peace isn’t something that can be stolen—it’s something we either protect or give away.

Even in the most heartbreaking moments, I discovered that I still had agency over how I related to my emotions. That realization didn’t erase the pain, but it gave me something solid to stand on. And I want that for you, too.

We’ll talk about:

•How to stop bracing for impact and start standing in your power

•The “yes for a no” strategy that filled my needs as a mom

•What emotional intelligence really means in parenting through addiction

•How staying grounded gives your child the best possible chance at change

There is a crucial difference between pity and compassion—and this distinction can deeply impact your relationship with your child. When we pity our kids, we see them as helpless victims, stripping them of their agency and reinforcing our own feelings of hopelessness.

But compassion is different—it sees their struggles without defining them by them, offering support in a way that preserves dignity and connection.

Heather shares personal experiences that have shown her the stark contrast between pity and compassion. We’ll also explore how parents often unknowingly judge their child’s struggles, assuming they are solely a result of poor choices while overlooking the massive role of other factors.

If you’ve ever thought, “I would never end up in that situation,” this episode will challenge that belief and help you shift from judgment to true understanding.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

•How pity and compassion create completely different dynamics in your relationship with your child

•Why pity makes your child feel disconnected, unseen, and incapable of change

•How compassion fosters trust, safety, and a stronger bond

•7 simple ways to shift from pity to compassion in your daily interactions

In this episode, Heather interviews Jeremy French, the founder of Making Whole, an organization that fills a critical gap in the addiction recovery treatment system. While traditional recovery programs often focus on short-term stabilization, Making Whole provides the missing piece—long-term support through meaningful work, mentorship, and personal growth.

Jeremy shares his journey of asking a pivotal question: Why do some people thrive in long-term recovery while others struggle or don’t survive?

Through his exploration, he identified key elements that support sustainable recovery—mentorship, creativity, problem-solving, and the ability to navigate uncertainty.

These insights became the foundation of Making Whole, where men in recovery not only learn to craft high-quality custom furniture but also rebuild their lives and develop the skills necessary to thrive.

In This Episode, You’ll Learn:

•The importance of creating an environment of change where people want to stay and get better.

•How meaningful work and mentorship create a foundation for sustainable recovery.

•The role of passion, creative problem solving, and embracing uncertainty in healing.

In this heartfelt episode, Heather shares her perspective on the damaging labels of codependent and enabler that are often placed on parents. She explains why these labels are not only unhelpful but also undermine a parent's natural instincts—instincts that are, in fact, a powerful tool for connection and support.

Heather emphasizes that parents don’t need warnings about what not to do. Instead, they need clear, actionable guidance on how to help their child struggling with substance use while staying connected in a meaningful way.

Listeners will discover:

  • Why parental instincts are not the problem—they are the key.
  • How small, intentional shifts in communication and boundaries can create meaningful change.
  • The importance of questioning harmful labels and trusting their own 'why.'
  • How having their own back and honoring their values is a vital part of helping their child.

This episode is a powerful reminder that a parent's love is not a disorder, and they are never powerless.

With the right tools and support, parents can show up effectively for their child and themselves.

In the last episode, we explored why our kids can excel in unexpected areas—like chess, gas prices, or mental math—but struggle with everyday tasks like making a phone call or getting to an appointment on time. We looked at the brain science behind these inconsistencies and how substance use impacts different cognitive functions.

But now comes the next step: How do we work with these realities instead of fighting against them?

In this episode, we’ll focus on practical ways to help your child follow through on tasks, build new skills, and gain confidence—without creating more conflict or frustration.

We’ll cover:

  • How to help your child make a phone call when avoidance and anxiety get in the way
  • How to get them to an appointment on time without endless reminders and frustration
  • How to support long-term planning in a way that makes sense for their brain
  • Why small, achievable steps matter more than big expectations

When we stop seeing their struggles as defiance and start seeing them as brain function, everything shifts. We can adjust our expectations, reduce conflict, and set them up for success in ways that actually work.

Have you ever felt completely baffled by your child’s behavior? Maybe they can play chess skillfully but can’t seem to get ready for an appointment on time. Maybe they have zero concept of time but can tell you the gas prices at every station in town. These inconsistencies can feel frustrating and even personal—like they don’t care or aren’t trying.

But what if there’s a scientific explanation?

In this episode, we dive into the brain science behind these confusing behaviors. I’ll break down how substance use affects different areas of the brain, why some skills stay intact while others decline, and how understanding this can reduce frustration, increase compassion, and help you better support your child.

We’ll explore:

  • How the prefrontal cortex, dopamine system, hippocampus, and amygdala all play a role in motivation, memory, and decision-making
  • Why time blindness makes planning and follow-through so difficult
  • How survival-based thinking can cause hyperfocus on things like gas prices but not daily responsibilities
  • Why understanding these brain changes can help you find peace of mind and set realistic expectations

When we understand the why behind their struggles, we can stop fighting against reality and start working with it.

In this heartfelt episode, Heather dives into three powerful questions inspired by a mom from her Facebook group:

  1. How do you live a happy life knowing your child might die?
  2. Are we really only as happy as your unhappiest child?

Heather explores the complex topic of manipulation in the context of addiction and family dynamics.

When your child is using substances, it’s common to experience behaviors that feel manipulative or self-serving. However, Heather emphasizes the importance of stepping back to see these actions through a compassionate lens, which can empower parents to respond with clarity rather than react out of frustration or hurt.

Heather covers:

  • Understanding Manipulation:What manipulation is and isn’t, and how labeling behaviors as manipulative can reduce loved ones to harmful stereotypes.
  • Influence vs. Desperation: Howto distinguish when behaviors stem from true manipulation versus desperation or an attempt to meet a basic need.
  • A Compassionate Perspective:Shifting from a “victim-perpetrator” mindset to a more empowered approach, recognizing manipulation as a universal human behavior rather than one solely tied to addiction.
  • Strategies for IntentionalResponses: Tips for responding thoughtfully, using the CRAFT approach (Community Reinforcement and Family Training).

With insights drawn from her own experiences, Heather shares the importance of language, self-awareness, and finding less charged ways to label challenging behaviors. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to navigate difficult behaviors with compassion and maintain peace of mind in the face of addiction.

The pain of feeling disconnected from your child can be overwhelming, but there are powerful ways to shift your approach and create the deep, meaningful connection you desire. Empathy, compassion, and effective communication are at the root of human connection. They’re also a critical component of shaping your experience of your child’s addiction.

When you access painful memories with feelings of guilt, blame, and shame you block connection because that creates cycles of defensive behaviors, avoidance, negative self-perception, and emotional withdrawal. Every time you access a memory you distort it. That means you can increase the negative emotional charge of a memory as you ruminate about it creating a profoundimpact on your relationship with your child, your past, present, and your future. In this episode, Heather illustrates how to break free from those negative patterns and shape your experience intentionally to create a connection with yourself and your child.

In this episode, you will learn:

  • How distorting your painful memories perpetuates suffering and what to do instead.
  • Why your brain likes to blame.
  • How to take control of your own experiences to positively influence your relationship with your child.
  • The power of thoughts, beliefs, and memories to transform your parenting approach.

Heather and Pam Lanhart from Thrive Family Recovery Resources dive deep into a topic that's often misunderstood in the world of recovery: ambivalence. It can be one of the most challenging aspects that families face when dealing with a loved one's journey towards change. Ambivalence is complex but often oversimplified and stigmatized which leads to shame, blame, and labeling. Open and honest conversations about ambivalence are crucial in normalizing it within the change process. It’s important to look at our own struggles with ambivalence to help us understand the struggles and the challenges faced by our loved ones.

Some topics covered in this episode include:

  • When your child asks for treatment but doesn’t follow through
  • How to respond to the call that your child wants to leave treatment early
  • What drives the motivation for change
  • Strategies for responding to a return to use

Addiction within a family can be a challenging experience, particularly when more than one family member is affected. Whether it's a child or a spouse, the common thread is the experience of stigma and shame. In this episode, guest Amanda Lockyer from Addiction Makes Three, shares her experience as a wife, and Heather shares her experience as a mother. They candidly discuss how shame and stigma made everything harder for them at the beginning of their journeys with their loved ones. Both women felt isolated without support and disconnected from their loved ones. As they reflect on their journeys, they discuss how shame, stigma, and fear caused them to stray from their values as a wife and mother. Despite these challenges, Amanda and Heather share their journeys towards self-compassion and self-forgiveness, which helped them become better support systems for their loved ones. Heather and guest Cordelia Kraus talk about addiction, recovery, and parenting while challenging traditional beliefs and exploring alternative perspectives and approaches to what “it works” means. Their hope is to provide insights, information, and support while encouraging thoughtful reflection and understanding in navigating the complexities of addiction and recovery within a family context.

The statement "it works" generally implies that a particular approach or strategy is effective in achieving its intended outcome. Many parents’ only intendedoutcome is for their child to achieve and maintain abstinence or sobriety. This may not be applicable or effective for everyone though. Recovery from substance use disorder is a complex and individualized process, and different approaches may be more appropriate for different people based on their uniquecircumstances, motivations, and preferences.

It's crucial for parents to be open to understanding and respecting their children's perspectives and desires, and to consider a range of approaches that may be appropriate for their child's unique needs, rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all approach based on preconceived notions of what "it works" means. An effective response to substance use involves flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to collaborate with your child to find approaches that truly work for theirwell-being and growth. Cordelia Kraus, LPC, CADC- became passionate about working with families struggling with their loved one's substance use after going through her own experiences as a mom. Cordelia runs the website HelpingFamiliesHelp.com: a website that connects families with CRAFT-based resources and offers community and support for the providers who serve them. She has a private practice in Portland, Oregon.

Topics discussed in this episode:

  • What “it works” means
  • How to show up with love in times of fear
  • What the CRAFT 70% number really means
  • A more inclusive definition of recovery
  • The pitfall of wanting to go back to your pre-substance use life

Addiction is a bio-psycho-social disease, yet biology has been mostly left out of treatment considerations - until now. Dr Evelyn Higgins from wired for addiction created a genetic test that measures brain chemicals, hormones, and specific genes linked to risk taking, impulse control, addiction, depression, and anxiety. Measuring those risk factors takes the guesswork out of treatment and make it specific to each person’s individual needs.

In this episode you will learn:

How the Wired For Addiction getnetic test works

How the results of the test are used to form an individualized holisitc approach to treatment

How our environment impacts our genetic expression

Adoptees are almost twice as likely to develop substance use disorder. That statistic gave Beth Syverson insight into why her adopted son Joey was struggling with substances. Beth is using her lived experience to help adoptive parents who are coming "out of the fog" and realizing the adoption that created their family also created trauma for their child. Even if you haven't been touched by adoption this episode will give you insight into the impact of trauma and mental health struggles.

Today marks one year since Helanna died from a fentanyl overdose so her interview is being released again to honor her memory. This episode is one of the most listened-to episodes on the podcast. Heather also shares some of the realizations she's had since Helanna died in the intro to the episode.

Link to find Naloxone

If you can't find Naloxone using the link, search for a recovery alliance or harm reduction organization in your county.

Original Episode Show Notes:

This week I got to interview my daughter. You've been hearing my experience of her addiction so I think that it's important to hear what her experience was like. Some of the questions I asked:

· What was it like when I looked to her to be ok to make me feel better instead of me being stable for her?

· What else did I do that wasn’t helpful to her?

· What did I do that was helpful to her?

· Is there anything I could have done differently to help her not struggle with addiction?

· What did she get out of using substances?

· What made her want to get sober?

· What has relapsing taught her?

· What makes her feel supported in sobriety?

I learned a few new things and had some realizations while listening to her insight and I ended up sharing some things I've never shared before.

Ambivalence is a complex emotion. It’s the simultaneous and contradictory feeling of positive and negative emotions at the same time. It’s part of the messiness of being human. When we feel complex competing emotions the last thing we want is someone to minimize how we feel by oversimplifying it, yet that’s what we do when we label our kid’s ambivalence about substances as denial or accuse them of not being serious about recovery.

3 things you’ll learn in this episode:

  • Ambivalence is normal
  • Ways we all experience ambivalence
  • How to leverage understanding your child’s behavior

Heather interviewed Certified Master Breathwork Facilitator Victoria Starr. Your breath is your body's only system that is voluntary and under your control. Intentional breathing can reduce anxiety, help with sleep and digestion, increase energy, boost the immune system, and lower blood pressure. You experience the most peace in the present moment, even during stressful situations. Projecting into the future, getting stuck in negative thought loops, and disconnecting from your body changes your breathing and keeps you stuck in fight or flight. Changing your breathing pattern has an immediate impact on your mind and body.

A few things you'll learn from the episode:

  • What RESET breathwork is and how it is different from other breathwork
  • The difference between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system and why understanding them matters
  • How we store unprocessed emotions in our body and the problems it causes

Do you know that the amount of stress you feel and the intensity of the emotions you feel along with it are based on your beliefs about your ability to handle the situation? The amount of stress you feel comes from your thoughts rather than the situation. That means stress can be reduced by gaining the skills you need to handle the situation and being intentional with how you think about it. Otherwise, you get stuck worrying, not learning the skills you need and you increase your stress instead of regulating it. When you understand the difference between worry, stress, anxiety, and overwhelm and understand where they happen in your body and how they affect you, you are no longer at the effect of them. Understanding these nuances creates emotional intelligence. This helps you relieve stress, diffuse conflict, and overcome challenges when you're living with your child's addiction.

Heather is hosting a free CRAFT workshop about positive communication Wednesday, September 21st at 7 PM EST. Studies show that 70% of people who use CRAFT are likely to get their loved ones to seek treatment within a year. CRAFT also helps family members improve their own lives whether their loved one seeks treatment or not.

CRAFT is an acronym for Community Reinforcement And Family Training - a scientifically supported, evidence-based, clinically proven approach to helping families of substance users. CRAFT originated at the University of New Mexico and was developed by Robert Meyers, Ph.D., and colleagues. Research and clinical trials have given evidence that with the right tools, families can effect change.

CRAFT has 3 goals:

  1. Teach you skills to take care of yourself

  2. Teach you skills to help your loved one change

  3. To reduce substance use

Beth, Joey, and Heather talk about how CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) and coaching transformed their family so you can hear real-life examples of how this work can change your family too. The highlights of this episode are hearing how Joey feels about the changes he made and how Beth's mindset has shifted about Joey's substance use and the peace of mind she creates for herself. Joey doesn't know how CRAFT or coaching works, but he knows how it feels to him. That's a beautiful testament to how much impact and influence you can have as a parent.

Some of the main topics discussed:

  1. How taking the focus off your child and putting it on yourself impacts your family's experience of your child's addiction.
  2. It's important to redefine parenting when your child is struggling with addiction - what worked before will no longer work.
  3. Connection is the goal instead of sobriety.

On August 31st, 2021 Heather spoke at the Volusia County Recovery Alliance Keeping Hope event. It was their 4th annual overdose awarness and rememberance day held in Daytona, Florida. The event is in honor of International Overdose Awareness Day which acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends and remembers those who have died due to drug overdose. The day helps reduce the stigma of Substance Use Disorder (SUD), showing that recovery is possible and that overdoses can be prevented.

Heather's speech focuses on:

  1. Remembering and honoring Helanna

  2. What Heather wants others to know regarding the stigma associated with overdose

  3. Her encouragement and guidance for others who have lost their loved one

Heather Interviews author Susan Lynch. Her memoir Life After Kevin A Mother's Search for Peace and the Golden Retreivers that Led the Way is a story about finding meaning when life challenges you in the hardest ways, healing through community, spiritual connection, and the transformation that comes from learning how to sit with intensely painful emotions to gain answers and clarity.

Susan’s son Kevin died from multiple drug intoxication in 2015. She kept the cause of his death a secret for 2 years because of shame and stigma. Shame separates us from community and connection. It also keeps us from seeing that we need help.

3 Thing you'll learn in this episode:

  1. How Shame kept Susan silent and the impact it had on her grief
  2. How Susan's dogs helped her heal
  3. Connecting with and receiving guidance from someone that has died

If you would like to pre-order Susan's book use this link www.susan-lynch.com/book-order.

Do you feel like you're failing because your child isn't sober yet? Supporting your child through their addiction is a marathon, not a sprint. The belief that "it's not working" can be very painful and cause you a lot of frustration. It can also make it harder for you to regulate your emotions around your child. When you have other measures for success on your journey, then you create rewards for yourself for the changes you're making and the tools you're learning and using. Those rewards give you the momentum you need to keep moving forward. They also make it easier for you to connect with your child.

Heather and returning guest Kelly Hatcher talk about what it was like when their kids went to rehab. They both experienced a major gap between their expectations about what rehab and sobriety would be like vs reality. Addiction and recovery are complex. Rehab and sobriety are stops on a lifetime journey. They are not destinations. Heather and Kelly hope that that by sharing their experience it will make rehab and sobriety easier for you and help you support your child as well.

3 things you’ll take away from the episode:

When you're supporting your child through addiction, there are many uncomfortable and even painful experiences. The more capacity you have to tolerate emotional pain, the more capable and confident you feel about yourself and your ability to support your child. A willingness to learn from any experience, openness to change, and the capacity to express unpleasant feelings leads to emotional strength and resilience. Being able to experience your own emotional pain also makes it easier for you to tolerate the discomfort of your child's emotional pain as well. It also makes it easier to engage in difficult conversations. Emotional mastery is an essential skill to help you through your journey with your child's addiction.

Topics Discussed In This Episode:

How emotions only last 90 seconds

Why some emotions seem to last longer than 90 seconds

How allowing and feeling your unpleasant emotions leads to a life you love

Why we use distractions to avoid feelings

How many times have you heard you can only help yourself? It's critical to help yourself, but it's not the only thing you can do. You can invite change in your child and create space for them to decide they want to change. We're constantly told that our kids won't change unless they want to, but we're rarely told that we can create favorable conditions for them to want to change. You can help your child.

This episode is an updated excerpt from episode 45 which is the first episode that I made after my daughter Helanna died from fentanyl poisoning. Episode 45 started off very emotional. I don’t want the really important message I had later in that episode to get lost in the heavy emotions.

I updated and re-recorded three critical messages from that episode:

  1. Why we all need our own recovery
  2. Why you need community as you go through your child’s addiction and recovery
  3. Connecting to your child through love instead of guilt, shame, or anger

The episode I recommend next:

We're always dancing with the fine line between help and support that comes from a place of love and fixing that comes from a place of fear. Fear can show up in such sneaky ways that you don't realize you're trying to fix your child again.  The way out of that is going to the "safe zone" of focusing on connection. In this episode I give you 4 ways to identify that you're in fear and 3 ways to stop fixing and start connecting again.

Even I struggle with fears of enabling. For many years I was a student of the tough love approach, trying to control, and beliefs that didn’t serve me about addiction. No matter how much time I put into creating beliefs that serve me and learning healthy ways to support Helanna, the fear of enabling rather than helping her was always there.

As the result of much introspection about where things went wrong and insight from Helanna’s journal, I want to share 3 things I wish I did differently last year and why I wish I had done them differently.

This is not about blame. It’s about being open minded and learning from the past.

I went into this episode with intention and 3 important factors:

  1. Tons of self compassion

  2. Knowledge that I could have done all three of those things differently and Helanna still could have died

  3. Hope that sharing my experience will make it easier for you to make the best possible decision for your family when faced with similar situations

I can’t change what happened, but I can use it to give you perspective in the tremendously difficult area of navigating your child’s addiction.

How you show up for yourself determines how you experience your child's addiction. We aren't wired to be happy all the time. Struggling is inevitable and it's normal. There's wisdom in all our emotions, even the most difficult ones. We need to honor all the feelings that our life circumstances are triggering. Struggling well gives us new perspective so we don't get stuck in apathy. When we embrace the growth and change that our struggle is showing us we can grow and move forward through trying and even traumatic events.

Guest Andrea Seydel and I discussed:

Healing starts for us when we connect with other parents like us to hear their stories and share our experiences. When we do that we're no longer alone on this journey. Meeting and engaging with other parents gives us access to insights and resources we need. When we get the support we need, we find the safety and strength to accept ourselves and our children as we are in this moment. That's why my guest Casie Fariello is one of the founders of a new online support community called Other Parents Like Me (OPLM). In this episode we discuss:

How connection is the key to hope, help, and healing

Supporting more than one child with addiction or other challenges

Our first experiences with joining a support community and what we got out of it

Rebuilding a family after addiction

The importance of taking everything you learn about addiction, making it your own, and choosing what you want to implement in your life

The wonderful experiences we've had being a part of OPLM

There’s a gap between what we expect in life and what we’re experiencing. In that gap is a loss. As parents we have hope and expectations. We expect a fulfilling relationship with our kids, family gatherings, milestones like prom and college, and we expect being a parent to feel good. When addiction shows up we experience the painful gap between what we expect and our reality. We have to grieve those losses so we can let go of what we expected. We can stop wishing the past were different and focus on what we can intentionally create in the future.

In this episode Grief coach Julie Cluff and I discuss:

· Discounting and comparing losses

· We should only compare the impact of our own losses

· What misplaced guilt is and how it affects you

· Finding forgiveness in grief

· Our experiences can be hard and also possible to move through

· We can grieve gently

· The only way to heal from trauma is to choose the empowerment of change

· You don’t have to carry grief the rest of your life

This is the hardest episode I've ever recorded and also the most important episode I ever recorded.

There's no way I can move forward helping other parents without stopping to honor Helanna's life and what her time on this earth gave to me.

This podcast wouldn't exist without her.

I wouldn't be who I am today without her.

The day that Helanna died I started wondering if I could continue my work helping other parents with their child’s addiction.

I didn’t know if I could face it anymore.

I wanted to hear Helanna’s voice and be close to her somehow, so I listened to the podcast episodes she was on & I realized that it was more important than ever for me to keep doing this work.

Having a child struggling with addiction is the hardest thing some parents will ever face.

Until I lost Helanna to fentanyl poisoning, her addiction has had more of a long-lasting impact on my life more than anything else.

So many parents are struggling alone and in silence because of shame and the stigma that goes with addiction.

There’s no way that I can step aside and not continue helping those parents.

Right now, that’s what is keeping me motivated to live a life that doesn’t include my daughter.

In this episode I share some of the things that I learned while dealing with her addiction and how they’re helping with my grief as well:

  • · Why we all need our own recovery & how mine saved me from regret in my last conversations with my daughter
  • · Why you shouldn't carry the pain of your child's addiction alone - Connection is a survival skill for us parents as much as it is for our kids
  • · Why we need to build the skillset to have difficult conversations with our kids about their addiction & how that's helped me

Your thoughts create your reality. One poisonous thought can cause you a lot of unnecessary pain.  It can be the difference between discomfort and great suffering.  Recently I realized I had one thought about my future that was draining my creativity, making me feel like I had a limited time to enjoy myself, and it was setting me up to create a bad experience when I have the ability to create a really positive experience.

We had some great questions come up after my first interview with Helanna (episode 41) so did a second interview.

We discussed:

Suboxone - how it helped - what she wishes she knew before she started using it - why she tapered off it.

How I handled her getting off suboxone.

Fears about losing her sobriety.

What her brain says about why being sober won't work.

How she knew she would use drugs from a young age.

Why she didn't trust me for a long time and what made her start trusting me again.

What made her decide to go to sober living this time when she wouldn't go other times.

How a shift in perspective about parenting can help your child and your relationship with them.

Healing your own emotional wounds is where the magic is when it comes to your child’s addiction. We’re all responsible for our own healing just like we want our kids to be. When you’re reactive no matter how hard you try not to be, then your child is triggering an emotional wound. The worst part about emotional wounds is we recreate them over and over again with our perception. We all want love, acceptance, and connection but the rejection wound keeps us from getting it. Today I give you 3 steps to heal the rejection wound.

This week I got to interview my daughter. You've been hearing my experience of her addiction so I think that it's important to hear what her experience was like. Some of the things we talked about:

· What was it like when I looked to you to be ok to make me feel better instead of me being stable for you?

· What else did I do that wasn’t helpful to you?

· What did I do that was helpful to you?

· Is there anything I could have done differently to help you not struggle with addiction?

· What did you get out of using?

· What made you want to get sober?

· What has relapsing taught you?

· What makes you feel supported in sobriety?

I learned a few new things and had some realizations while listening to her insight and I ended up sharing some things I've never shared before.

Post traumatic growth is the positive changes that are experienced after a major life crisis or traumatic event. A child's addiction can be a traumatic event in itself, or it can be filled with traumas. Every situation has good and bad in it though.  You've certainly experienced the bad, today I would like to open your mind to the good possibilities. I wasn't looking for growth when I found it, I was looking for relief from my suffering.  That relief came from tremendous growth and change.

When I was struggling the most with my daughter's addiction it was because I believed all the messaging that said if my daughter was mad at me I was probably doing the right thing.  Approaching my daughter's addiction with love was the only thing that felt right to me, but I didn't know how to do it. I didn't know that a shift in my belief about love would give more more power and leverage than anything else I had tried. In this episode I share that belief shift so you can use it to create an approach to your child's addiction that not only works, but also feels right.

When a relationship is challenging we tend to blame the difficulty on the other person.  One person can change a relationship dynamic. You can decide who you want to be in a relationship and let the other person be who they are. In this episode I give you specific steps to create relationships that serve you.

Some of the concepts I talk about in this episode are:

  • Addiction is a symptom of the problem, not the problem
  • How to deconstruct and redefine a relationship that serves you
  • Relationships are just thoughts

Today I’m sharing the tool with you that I use with all of my clients and in my daily life. It’s called the self coaching model. The model is how I figured out how to help myself when I couldn’t help my daughter. All the concepts I teach come from things I learned while doing models.

In this episode you will learn:

  • Why recognizing the difference between a thought and a circumstance is crucial to understanding how your brain works
  • How using the self coaching model will allow you to obtain full control over your life
  • How you can create our own peace of mind and happiness with the model

Most of us have this idea that we should feel positive emotion all the time, or that we shouldn’t feel negative emotion.

We aren't supposed to be happy 100% of the time.

The tools I share are meant to help you keep that 50/50 balance because when you're dealing with a child's addiction it's easy to get stuck in the negative 50.

Negative emotions have a purpose.

Each one is bringing you an important message.

When you know what your negative emotions are trying to tell you, then you can work through them instead of trying to avoid them or get stuck in them.

When you try to control  your child, you’re doing it to create relief from your emotional discomfort. It's one of those "solutions" that often leads to more emotional pain and discomfort.

Today I give you some empowering alternatives to trying to control your child and their addiction. I also share what's behind the major difference I see in parents who are still struggling with emotional chaos because of their child's addiction and parents that are showing up calm and confident and are no longer at the effect of their child's addiction.

How often do you send a text to your addicted child and breathe a sigh of relief because the text went through, or look on social media to see if they’ve been active, or do a drive by just so you can have a little peace of mind? That fear of all the things that can wrong can rule your life. You get stuck with horrible images and thoughts about them over dosing and no one being there to help them. You brain gets stuck looping through all the worst-case scenarios. You live your worst fear day in and day out, losing sleep, and wondering how the hell all this happened in the first place. When you have an addicted child you can’t rely on external circumstances to relieve your worry and fear. You have to develop the skillset to provide your own relief. In this episode I talk about how I help my clients provide that relief for themselves.

How often do you intend to have a positive interaction with your child, keep it light and polite, just give them a little love,  but instead it turns into disconnect, arguments, and you end up bewildered about where it went wrong?

I used to find myself in that position constantly. I would plan something fun with my daughter to make memories and connect with her and we would end up fighting, I would feel uptight, rushed & bitchy.

Today I tell you what causes that disconnect and how to change it into connection.
