Question for Adele Nicholas, a civil rights lawyer, songwriter, and musician from Chicago...
“So, what's the story?”
Adele Nicholas is a civil rights lawyer, songwriter, and musician.
The Chicago band Axons is the result of a songwriting project of hers which has led to the release of an album entitled 'I Object To Everything' in 2022.
It is inspired by the true story of how two federal prisoners escaped from the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown Chicago by rappelling 17 stories down the side of the building on ropes fashioned from braided bedsheets sewn together with dental floss in December 2012.

Gasper Nali lives in Nkhata Bay, on the shores of Lake Malawi. His song "Abale Ndikuwuzeni" which he performed live on his homemade instrument called a "Babatoni" has become an internet sensation.
The '”Babatoni” is a 3-meter long one-string bass guitar which is all homemade, and which Gasper plays with a beer bottle and a stick, while singing and stomping a locally fashioned kick-pedal on his cow skin bass drum.
Gasper lives a quite modest life with no internet access in the small town of Nkhata Bay, mainly supporting himself by playing regular shows at venues in town.

Benjamin Dittbrenner is an aquatic ecologist at Northeastern University in Boston. He and a team of scientists relocated beavers from lowland areas upstream, into the mountainous region of the Skykomish river, in the state of Washington. Largely thanks to the construction of dams by most of the animals, water temperatures cooled by about 2.3° Celsius, even during the summer, and contributed to the natural return of salmon into the river system. The program is one of many scientific projects designed to address the effects of global warming, especially in the Pacific Northwest.

In this clip Eli Neztsosie introduces himself in Navajo, his mother tongue, mentioning his ancestral lineage in a traditional way. He then completes an old Native American story, originally from the Pacific Northwest, the beginning of which is given to him here, in his own way, referring to the land of his Diné ancestors.
“As a rancher growing up in the rugged northeast corner of the Navajo Nation with no electricity or running water, Eli Neztsosie learned through years of work what it meant to rely on discipline and endurance. Now he relies on those same skills, running long distances.”

Hoda Khamosh is a writer, journalist, poet, and activist.
She was born in Iran, but moved back to Afghanistan with her parents where she lived until August, 2021, when she had to flee her home country shortly after the Taliban had taken over.
Here, she speaks in Persian to Radio Aula Mundi from her host country, Norway.
Due to her activism for women’s rights, Hoda Khamosh was appointed by the BBC one of the 100 most influential women in Afghanistan in 2021…
In an open letter to the Supreme Court of the United States, Hoda Khamosh would start with a complaint about the shape her country is in since the Taliban have seized power.
She would further criticize the way the Taliban were allowed to take over.
It’s all the result of mismanagement and the disastrous manner in which American soldiers were pulled out of Afghanistan.
Negotiations with the Taliban had been going on for a year in Doha, Qatar.
As a result of all this, freedom of speech, democracy, and women’s rights vanished from one day to the next.
And those are the very rights and freedoms the United States had promised to establish in Afghanistan after the attacks of September 11.
And all these things are in vain now.
So, in her letter to the Supreme Court of the United States, Hoda Khamosh would say that a ban on abortion is bad enough.
Then, she continues…
“Just look at the situation in Afghanistan which your government has created…”
“Your actions are threatening freedom and democracy not only in America or in Afghanistan, but in the whole world.”
“With regard to the restrictions of women’s rights, an abortion ban due to a decision by the Supreme Court of the United States would not only harm American women, but along with it, send a signal to the Taliban that would eventually deprive women AND men in Afghanistan of any rights whatsoever.”
Interpretation and translation provided by Rouzbeh Safaye, a social activist from Iran, who currently lives with his family in Munster, Germany.
Interview conducted by Marco Rixecker.
Subtitles written and edited by the Radio Aula Mundi team in Chicago, Illinois, United States.

She directs the Paleoecology Division of the New Core Lab at Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia and in collaboration with GISS climate modelers and LDEO geochemists is studying the Late Pleistocene and Holocene archives of lakes and wetlands (peatlands, salt marshes, tidal freshwater marshes, bogs, fens).
So, her research focuses on paleoecology and paleoclimatology, and in the face of a rapidly changing climate today, she and her team of students and researchers turn to the landscapes around us as well as their historical archives to give us the best possible hints of the magnitude and rapidity of past climate shifts, and their relevance for our future.
Their group utilizes field trips to wetlands (salt marshes, fresh marshes, bogs, fens, and swamps) to combine the study of modern plant ecology with retrieval of long sediment cores.

She began piñata making in South Los Angeles as a small time trade and quickly harnessed her artistic skill and entrepreneurial spirit to manage larger than life installation projects for companies and museums such as LACMA, Microsoft, Google, and even celebrities such as international pop star Rihanna.
She and her brother Josue Prieto are trying to revolutionize the art and craft of piñata-making by embracing change. Apart from introducing movable piñata limbs, Prieto has also experimented with adding developing talking piñatas that “speak” as they are pummeled.
She speaks to Radio Aula Mundi from the backyard of her studio which has opened only a few weeks ago, and which she shares with her brother Josue, her assistant Mia Baez and fellow artist J. Salvador.

This poem, entitled "White Birds Dark Shadows, 1962", was translated into English by Bernard Capinpin...
"This is the moment of destruction:
light against light in an apocalyptic flame,
Incinerating the calm outline of morning.
It’s easy to say burning even
The wildfire.
The lesson of the chameleon vivifies—in times of bewilderment
All color changes: the blue sky yellows.
This instance,
A bouquet of birds snatches their shadows like soldiers
Evacuating the flag in the face of defeat.
They know they will be left as silhouettes In the mountainside
if they do not flee the labyrinth of the first petroglyphs:
Sketches of a once free spirit.
Watch: the resolve of their flapping
As it soars in the dissolving brightness:
the thinning feathers and fury appear like
Petals of jasmine wisping after being plucked by the wind.
Fervor Is learned first by those who want to live,
however their flight muscles boil,
The destination fading from view.
I wish to believe that paradise is there
But words have disdained me.
They have nothing to lighten the blast,
Perhaps, silence.
The silence after every prayer;
the silence after
The torn singing of migratory birds—reviving our devastated world."

After a two-week quarantine following his return to his home country, Vanuatu, and two mandatory Covid tests, both of which were negative, he was able to speak by phone to Radio Aula Mundi about the effects of climate change on his home country, the pandemic, and the beauty of the Pacific Ocean, the so-called 'South Sea', as it is portrayed in the great literary classic he reads an excerpt from in English...
