As a Marketing professional, I am always intrigued by emerging trends. A trend that seems to be reaching a crescendo is the interest in UFOs and the search for the beginning of the human race. While studying astronomy and biology in college, I noticed how the frontiers of those sciences were constantly being expanded by new discoveries. I also noticed how bogged down science had become in its own dogma. Today, it seems that new scientific discoveries happen every day and the antiquity of human civilization has jumped from 5000 BC to 12000 BC in the wake of these discoveries. So what does this have to do with marketing? These trends are exciting and are drawing massive attention to the TV, radio and especially the Internet viewing public! Millions of people are following these trends and these are golden opportunities for specific businesses to take advantages of this global phenomena. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore these trends and why they are golden marketing opportunities for many industries and professions looking to find a loyal and fervent audience to share their marketing message. So tune in and tell your friends to get ready for a marketing trend that's out of this world as we explore the alien craze, a true worldwide phenomenon.

You may be asking yourself, what's so important about which browser I use. It's immensely important! The problem is that most internet users don't pay much attention to which browser they are using, they just use whatever browser comes with the device they own. Well today, it matters even more than ever before. Giant Internet companies affect more influence today than the analog TV industry did 20 years ago. More people rely on blogs today for their news, and Internet TV is taking over where analog TV left off. The main difference is that Digital Internet Giants can track everything a viewer sees and they can decide what content is then offered up as interesting to the user.
This also means that they can directly influence all purchases, what we believe to be true in our daily lives and what's happening in politics as well. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will discuss the importance of choosing a browser that has your best interest at heart. We will look at browser performance, privacy, security and most important of all, the integrity of the results provided for any given search. So get ready for battle as we explore the Renewal of the Browser Wars now taking place on a digital device near you. So tune in and tell your friends to share this link and find out which browser provides the best performance, security, privacy and search integrity.

In the history of business, no medium has evolved as fast as the Internet. When I created my first website in 1993, websites were only changed when your business changed. These changes usually had to do with adding employees, address or phone number changes. Typically a website's content would slowly change over a number of years. This was often related to advancements in HTML or if the business evolved. This usually meant every 3 to 5 years a major refresh would be implemented. Today, however, there are many evolutionary forces at play. Not only do you need to keep up with the changes to your business, but you also need to contend with the rapid evolution of the web as well. These factors include changes associated with social media, customer/prospect sentiment, web access platforms, customer data protection, and WC3/ADA compliance, just to name a few. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will address the ever-changing evolution of the World Wide Web and how this affects the need for your web property to either get refreshed, upgraded and evolve. So tell your friends and associated to tune in to the show, then read and share this article and watch the YouTube show as we tackle the subject of whether it's time for your website to evolve.

I have been directly engaged in word of mouth marketing (AKA Referral Marketing or Social Networking) for more than 35 years. I often hear a business owner say that they tried networking at Chamber of Commerce events and even hard contact networks (exclusive membership organizations), and they felt that the return on investment was poor or nonexistent! Well, this statement can be true and false at the same time. It has been my experience that, for the most part, you can only get back a return based on the though time and effort you put into any endeavor. In this episode of Working The Web to Win, we will take a hard look at organized word of mouth marketing, to see if the high returns are real, luck or just fancifully marketing on the parts of the referral organizations marketing department. So get ready to learn my first experiences, if referral marketing works and if so, what makes it work and how can the reader minimize the investment in time money and energy and still get the maximum return for their marketing dollars.

Before the 2016 presidential election, the rules for using social media as a marketing platform were producing great results for many businesses. If you ask the average person if they want to be healthy, live longer, be more active in their retirement years, you would get a big fat "YES", as the answer almost every time. What if you asked - If we could make going to the Doctor for a check up - painless, quick, easy you would get a big fat "YES". But what if we said that we can gather all your health vitals remotely using a health scanner followed by a five minute televideo conference one a year (if no problems are found) would that even be better. Again the answer would be a big fat "YES". So If I told you we have Star Trek Like technology available now to make to eliminate your regular doctor visits what would you say? Most people would say, "Your Kidding Right!". But I wouldn't be kidding! The first time we at Working the Web to Win took a real interest in Drone technology was in 2013. Back then it was exciting, held great promise and also cast a dark shadow. There were technological issues, licensing and cost questions and of course privacy concerns. Most worrisome for me was the possibility that these devices could be used as a deadly weapon for assassination and terrorism. In 2014, terrorism rose its ugly head in a big way as terrorist began to utilize the internet (especially social media) to spread the message of hate. Fast forward to 2019 and the reality of drones being used as weapons for assassination and terror is now a reality. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will cover many of the latest assassination and drone terrorist attack that have happened around the world. This is a very serious and important subject. Make sure you listen to the show and share this link and the article with your friend, family and co-workers. This threat is real, its here now and its not going to go away!

Last week I spent 2 hours waiting for my Windows 10 computer to complete an update after I got into my office. I don't know about you, but I hate waiting on my computer to start up, much less waiting two hours for an update to complete. For me, time is the most precious commodity in the universe, and wasting time on unnecessary updates just makes me mad. Now don't get me wrong, I want to install all bug fixes and security updates, but not at the expense of my most valuable and productive morning time. Many might tell you to schedule your updates for later, but the fact is that if you're your computer is not running Windows 10 Pro, you don't always have a choice of whether the update is downloaded and installed. To make matters worse, some updates break your system forcing you to wait through the rollback process. God forbid that a critical failure takes place and you have to reinstall your entire system (OS and apps)! In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will address the current problems that Windows 10 updates are causing for its user base. We will include links to many articles that discuss the problems occurring along with in-depth workarounds to help fix Windows 10 update issues. So read on and get some relief from the constant drudgery (some would say ) of Windows 10 updates. For more details, read the accompany article at https://workingthewebtowin.blogspot.com/

A few weeks ago. I wrote a blog that explained a number of ways to fortify your home and office against thieves. Like it or not, there are people out there who will be glad to relinquish you of your cash and other valuables. Whether we’re talking about a burglar breaking into your home or a mugger pulling a pistol on the street to demand your wallet, theft is something that most people take for granted until they become a victim. As I pointed out in an “HomeSecurity is Nothing to Sneeze At,” the best way to avoid becoming a victim is not to look like easy prey. By that, I mean the more secure your home is, the less likely it is to be targeted by burglars. The more cognizant of what’s going on around you, the less likely you are to get mugged. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we review Catherine Powell's article in depth and provide suggestion on how to sure up your internet security. So tell your friends to tune in to Working the Web to Win on Blog Talk Radio.

I often hear the term SEO in conversations. This happens when consulting with clients or just talking with friends or associates. Yet, few of the people I speak with have a handle on what SEO means to the average business owner. Sure, if you ask them what SEO means most will retort "Search Engine Optimization". However, if you take the question just one step further, you find that the person you're talking to gets stymied, and often resorts to a reply of "I don't know what's entailed". By the same token, I ask prospects what kind of marketing they are engaged in and they will say I have a guy who is doing SEO work for them. Again, when I ask specifically what their "SEO person" is doing, I get the reply, "I don't know"! The truth is - SEO is not just one thing. Twenty years ago SEO did mean on page Search Engine optimization, but today SEO involves hundreds of ranking factors and dozens of both on and off page elements that need to be optimized to maximize your results. In this episode of Workingt the Web to Win, we will cover a dozen factors that show the term SEO is vague at best at that we should be using a new term like Search Marketing or Content Marketing. So pull out your checklist and get ready to cross your T's and dot your i's as we pull back the curtain on the term SEO.

For those of you who know me ,you'll recall that I was involved in I.T. and also a network systems engineer. All told I spent 30 years making sure that the computer systems under my care were running at peak performance. Today, computers are far more complicated and the amount of system maintenance is many times more than was needed just 10 years ago. The fact is, most failures that digital systems have (i.e. computers, smartphones, tablets and the like) are caused by failure to maintain software updates of varying kinds. In fact, any time the operating system receives an update, it brings forth a time-consuming cascade of additional updates, that if ignored will lead to varying degrees of failures and vulnerabilities. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, I will explore the importance of what I call the Annual Digital Renewal Process. That is - engaging in the necessary system maintenance to maintain effective digital devices. Organic Social Media effectiveness for producing leads seems to have peaked just before the last presidential election. During the run-up to that election, we saw skewed search results, increases in filtered newsfeed posts and many changes to the timeline algorithm. Then after the election, we discovered the massive sale of private account profile data, the sales of advertising to Russian groups looking to influence the election and a what seems to be a runaway Frankenstein algorithm that affects ad placement and the news timelines. If you add to this all the filtering that Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn have added to their user controls, you can begin to see why business social posts are not showing up anymore. In this episode, of Working the Web to Win, we will delve into these and other changes that have taken place and explore what effect this is having on a business’s ability to use social media as a means for marketing products and services. We live in a world that is filled with techie terms and acronyms – Why? It's because people get lazy and don’t want to write or say a long phrase, so they abbreviate it and create acronyms. However, once these acronyms are created, they become communications weapons that advertisers use to bedazzle their prospects and clients. In our business, I hear sales reps talking in tongues, using words like SERPS, PPC, CPA, KPI, and GDPR as they present their wares as if they were magicians offering up magic incantations that produce miraculous page one results. The truth be told is that rarely do their claims match their results and it is because of this that most advertisers have a bad reputation. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore the top 26 key marketing phrases plus another 76, (102 in total) that are used in acronym form to bedazzle prospects. Our intention is to remove the veil of mystery from these words so our audience can make intelligent decisions when an advertising sales rep says – we can provide great clicks or Impressions, you can ask them, "What kind of conversions can you guarantee and what is the cost of client acquisition?” So, break out your notebook and copy down the phrases and definitions, and arm yourself with these 25 key marketing phrases as your shield against any bedazzling advertising sales rep.
In 2011, my business partner Carl Weis and I decided to test our belief that “Authoritative, High Quality, Relevant, Timely, Useful and Infotainment content is what Google uses to determine a web pages organic ranking. We felt that if a page was being visited, read, viewed, commented on and shared, it would signal to Google that this page deserved to be ranked higher than pages that did not receive this type of attention. To achieve this goal, we decided to write and produce a weekly live internet radio show that we would also record as video and then publish all three content pieces each week to our social following. We chose the key phrase “Working the Web” as our organic page one goal. After nine months of diligent work, we received multiple organic page one search listings for our web pages. Fast forward 8 years later and we are still on page one of organic search for that phrase. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore our method of Content Casting (aka podcasting in all its forms), and how its primary benefits help businesses succeed in a very competitive internet marketplace. I have been writing about cybercrime for over seven years now, but this year I have seen a marked increase in targeted email phishing attacks based on my Baby-Boomer profile. Obviously, the boomers are coming of age, but I also attribute this increase to the recent massive cyber breaches at Yahoo, Equifax, Facebook, and other mega database holders. The massive Baby-Boomer population along with the above-mentioned massive breaches are all leading to a perfect cyber phishing storm because now cyber-criminals have everything they need to profile this population. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore the uptick in email phishing, its causes, its targets and what preventive measures you can take to prevent this perfect storm from sinking your cyber life. So, batten down your cyber hatches and get ready to be schooled on the latest cyber-criminal phishing attack along with the best ways to protect your cyber world.

Six years ago, my business partner wrote an excellent article about how back in 2012, most SEO experts claimed, (what seemed to the average businessman) supernatural knowledge of what worked in search engine optimization. They almost always spoke in the cryptic vocabulary of their industry, making it difficult for any businessperson to understand what they were doing. To make matters worse, it was common at that time to gain search ranking through the use of so-called black hat trickery. This is something that is still used occasionally today. It used to be widespread. In fact, SEO has evolved into a multifaceted marketing endeavor with many moving parts. Any expert who tells you they know exactly how it all works, is at best stretching the truth. There is a Taoist saying that goes, “Those who know do not say, and those who say do not know. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore what has evolved from what once worked in SEO marketing to what works today. My business partner’s article written in 2012 was ahead of its time, since it foresaw many of the things that are required for success today. So, get ready to delve into search engine marketing from a whole new perspective as we explore “The Tao of SEO Revised”.

Google AdWords is one of the most used and successful internet marketing tools available today. For many, it can be instant online gratification that can generate exposure, produce leads, and sales. For others, it can become a black hole that eats profits and produces little in the way of tangible results. Why does this immense dichotomy exist? The answer is ignorance. Ignorance of the complexities of this platform can lead to many online marketing mistakes. The worst part is even once you get it right, you have to bear in mind this PPC platform is always evolving as Google strives to improve its product. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore seven common issues that frustrate businesses and pay per click managers alike when using Google AdWords (now called Google Ads). So, take out your notepad to write down some e-tips, so you can avoid the pitfalls and learn how to profit by using AdWords.

What makes a great blog? For that matter, what makes a great blogger? How can a blogger insure their blogging success? As a blogger, I received my training from several successful, experienced authors and writers, (including Dr. Ivan Misner, the Founder of BNI). I was taught that brevity is your friend. I was also taught that prose should be clear, clean, and concise, yet elegant. On top of that, your grammar needs to be impeccable. Your blogs need to open dramatically and beat a clear path that readers will want to follow. Then, your story needs to fulfill its promises by providing useful information that compels the reader to continue reading to the end of the story.
In this episode of Working the Web to Win, I will explore five case studies that show how would-be marketers made their blogging bones. I will detail their methods while exposing the good, the bad and the ugly paths to blogging success they took. These are true stories with some elements modified to hide the writers’ identities. The paths they followed will be explained in detail so you can learn from their mistakes, as well as from their successes. So, get ready to learn from these five blog marketing methods as we explore; “Blog Marketing – What Works Exemplified by Five Case Histories.”

For some, social media has been a godsend. It has been the great equalizer for the masses, allowing the everyday person to stand up against companies that provide poor products or services. For small businesses that are consumer-oriented, it has been a blessing because of the testimonials and high ratings they receive, allowing them to compete with big business. But for some, social media has been a curse! Any business or person who has ever been hacked, scammed, bullied or wrongfully vilified in any way knows how dreadful and relentless social media can be. It is a two-edged sword that cuts both ways. Both the positive and negative aspects of social media create myths. Sometimes, it’s because what was once great about a particular platform is now gone. Other times it’s because a one-time negative event began a bad memory that became a legend. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, which is also the third installment of “36 Social Media Myths”, we will continue with myths 25 through 36 to finish the countdown. I also recommend reading Part 1 and Part 2 of this series to get the big picture. We will include a few hidden tidbits along the way as well. So, roll up your sleeves and get ready to write down the last 12 myths as we explore the top “36 Myths in Social Media”.

One of the most interesting things about social media is that it's diverse in application but homogeneous at the same time. What I mean by this is that every social platform has its own rules, limitations, culture, social etiquette and ardent followers. Yet it does have marketing principles that have not changed since I first wrote about them back in 2009. Regardless of these principles, people will post almost anything. Granted, there are some prohibitions, and each social network sets its own standards. For Example; Facebook tries to suppress , yet Twitter lets it thrive. Snap chat has always allowed Sexting, but Instagram only shut it down when there is a complaint. Because of this free for all, people push social media’s boundaries, and this creates an atmosphere of widespread myth. The rapid growth of social media also perpetuates the creation of new problems which also lead to new myths. Myths create erroneous ideas of what is allowed and what works in social media. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will cover part 2 by going over myths 13 through 24 of the 36 myths about social media networking. Together all 36 myths compromise the most comprehensive list of social media myths ever put together. So, make sure you read all three articles. This will eliminate any doubts or misconceptions you may have, making social media and social networking your personal ally and your business marketing best friend.

Social media platforms have been around since before the invention of the internet. However, modern social media sprang up starting with Blogger and LinkedIn in 2003, followed by Facebook in 2004, My Space in 2005, and Twitter in 2006. These social networks quickly grew to millions of subscriptions by the late 2000’s and today there are more than 2.3 billion social media subscribers. Most ideas of what social media does is erroneous. The myths of what its boundaries are and how it works as marketing venues are widespread and are often believed as true. With so much growth and rapid change, it's no wonder why there are so many misconceptions and myths about social media. This article will be comprised of 3 parts, covering 36 common myths that people and businesses have about social media. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will cover the first 12 myths. So, take several long breaths as we bring you the most comprehensive blog series covering more than three dozen social media myths so you won’t mistakenly fall prey to their misconceptions.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could run an ad and it produced great results the first time it ran? It also would be great if every advertiser told you the strength and weakness of their marketing program? Or, if you made a mistake, that the advertiser would allow you to make a change so that you won’t keep throwing your money away for a year? When I speak with business owners, I often hear them say that advertising is like gambling. To a great extent, this is true! But it doesn’t have to be. If you take the time to vet both the vendor and the process, you can eliminate a lot of the risk, especially if you pick a vendor who provides guarantees. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore item 11 -21 of our 21 common marketing mistakes that businesses make when advertising their products or services. So, learn how to prevent or eliminate any mistakes in your current or future marketing foray as you read “Common Marketing Mistakes That Lead to Advertising Failure.”

Today, the number of websites on the internet seems innumerable. Yet, how many are actually effective at producing business. The World Wide Web is the most dynamic business environment on the planet. It can be said that it evolves on a daily basis. However, few businesses update their web pages very often. In 1994 there were fewer than 3000 published websites. The web was so new that few businesses had heard of the internet. In a mere two decades, the number of websites has exploded to a quantity never foreseen. The milestone of 1 billion websites was reached in 2016 and today there are 1.7 billion of them. Yet, it seems that only about 200 million are active. These, in my opinion, are the winners of the web. Why don’t businesses update their websites? Is it because they are following accounting practices where they depreciate the cost over a specific period? Or, is it because they are ignorant of the importance of the need to update their investment? In this episode of Working the Web to Win, I will explore the costs, benefits, and ways to maximize the return on your website investment. We will explain the current evolution of website ranking factors, traffic generation, and financial return. So, open your browsers and be ready to evaluate your websites as we decode how to get a real return on your website investment.

Have you noticed the huge increase in updates lately? Over the last three years, we have seen a tremendous increase in the number of monthly (sometimes weekly) updates digital devices receive (i.e., computer, tablets and smartphones and other smart devices). If you’re an exclusive Apple or Linux user, you are not feeling the same pain as those who are using a Window 10 or a Windows-Android mix. However, if you're using Apple products mixed with other platforms, you would have noticed the increase in the frequency of updates as well. The problem is growing, and the increase in update frequency is eating into employee productivity and increasing the cost due to mission-critical digital device downtime. Last week alone my Windows 10 computer receive an update that took for restarts to complete (about an hour time) and after the system was functioning, I received several unexpected black screens when trying to post pictures to our blog while using chrome. This is not an isolated event. These types of issues are being reported on an almost daily basis, and there is no end in sight to the increase in the frequency of updates that are taking place. To make things even worse, each OS update causes a cascade of out of synch revisions where antimalware apps, browsers, applications, IoT system and smartphone apps become unstable and begin to crash unexpectedly. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore the growing problem that the current state of update frequency is causing and will provide some guidelines to help mitigate the problem. So, break out your update scheduler and set your calendar as we explore and learn how to tame update hell.
How valuable is your Personal Data? It’s extremely valuable, at least according to the data aggregation company Exactis. They collect and sell consumer and business data to marketers and resellers all over the world. They have collected information on 218 million individuals, 110 million U.S. households, 88 million verified email addresses and 112 million records with residential phone numbers. The fact that you have probably never heard of Exactis, or that they have collected so much personal data isn’t surprising. What’s very scary is the fact that this data was easily accessible to anybody with only a little internet search knowhow. In other words, any hacker could (and may have) downloaded this massive database, making it easy to profile, imitate, or go after almost every citizen, family, and business in the United States. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we’ll discuss this massive data leak along with several other huge data breaches that have just taken place in the last few months. So, hold onto your internet passwords and lock down your social accounts as we explore the ever-growing massive data breaches that are making U.S. citizens vulnerable to hack attacks.

Back in 2012, I wrote my annual Hector the Connector Prediction article where I stated that making your website mobile friendly was critical to your long-term internet marketing success. Back then few websites were mobile friendly. HTML 5 did not exist yet, and the only way you could truly have a mobile website was to build a separate website designed to fit mobile platforms. These sites were formatted for smartphone or tablet and were easy to spot because they had the designation “.mobi” attached to them. In 2012, the majority of web surfers were using desktop computers. Most smartphones only used 3G (4G LTE was still new) and 99.999 percent of all websites were built for a desktop platform. Today, more than 52% of all web traffic is mobile (i.e., from smartphones). In Asia, it’s more than 65%! Today’s online marketer needs to make sure their web assets are mobile friendly, or they’ll miss out on more than half the traffic! In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore what is needed from your mobile-friendly web assets and what it takes to succeed in a mobile-dominated internet. So, get out your smartphone and get ready to browse the changes you need to make to become 100% mobile-friendly.

I love the song dirty laundry by Don Henley which portrays the news industry as a system that lives off the glory and misfortunes of celebrities and the rich and famous. However, this article is not about the dirty laundry of the rich and famous; It's about how anyone can grow an audience to a very large number by implementing marketing elements that are reciprocal to the fans it targets. Most social media articles about the rich and famous, only talk about who reached a huge following, not how they achieved their results. There is a famous line in Shakespeare’s play Henry the VI, that says “Kill all the Lawyers”. This is what half the business owners say when I tell them that businesses are being sued for ADA website compliance issues. The other half try and stick their head in the sand and say, that’s impossible, or I’m too small for them to come after me. When I first read about these ADA compliance lawsuits, I was shocked. As I dug deeper, I found the growing number of lawsuits troubling and very scary as I pictured the tremendous cost that businesses worldwide would incur. Because this issue is complex, I will break this subject down into two articles. This is the first installment which will address the problem. The second will address methods and tools to achieve compliance. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will provide the truth about this impending legal epidemic and provide much-needed clarity as to where the tsunami of lawsuits is headed. Cyberbullying – It's one of the scourges of the Internet. Although the Internet has brought us endless abilities to communicate with each other, made research extremely easy and made it possible to engage in worldwide commerce it has also allowed the transfer of old analog bad behaviors and unleashed them as new digital evils. Cyberbullying and Trolling are two that have multiplied because they are easy to engage in and because they are harder to monitor. Having said this, both cyberbullying and trolling can be controlled and in fact, be reduced if internet users know what to look for and they know what to do. The Dark Web! It’s a term you hear people bantering about quite a bit today. Are hackers buying and selling your info on the Dark Web! Are cybercriminals using the Dark Web as a means of attacking our government, our businesses, and our personal digital devices with impunity? What are the costs and the dangers we currently face? There is no doubt in my mind this problem has mushroomed because of the cybersecurity incompetence of companies like Equifax, Yahoo, and others that have allowed cybercriminals to gain access to our personal data. The headlines about the Russians hacking our political system has finally brought to the forefront the danger that cybercrime brings. Today, our government needs to declare war on cybercrime if we want to keep this peril at bay. In January of 2018, I received a robocall telling me that the IRS was suing me for fraud and that I must call the phone number provided right away. I deleted the voicemail and blocked the number so that I would not receive another annoying call. Then in February, I received a similar robocall telling me basically the same thing. Again, I deleted and blocked the number. Then around March 20th, I received a third Robocall call professing the same fraud. This time I saved the voicemail so that I could show it to the authorities. On April 5th I received an email from a CPA (whom I don’t use) asking me to download and open a “DocuSign” file for my taxes. Again, this was a phishing attack. What do you do when you are being bombarded by cybercriminals who are trying to penetrate your financial defenses. How can you win against such constant attacks? In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore the current rash of IRS scams and cyber-fraud that takes place in the new year, and we will provide prudent measures you can implement to ensure the protection of your financial data and identity.
“The Times They Are A-Changin” – so wrote Bob Dylan several decades ago, but I don’t think he had in mind the Changes that are constantly occurring in Social Media. I woke up on the 23rd of March and found that Hootsuite (the tool I use to post to social media) only allowed me to post to one Twitter account at a time. The month before that, Facebook announced (after they made changes) that there were altering (again) how news feed post would be filtered. Soon after purchasing LinkedIn, Microsoft totally revamped what you could do and how you could use that social network. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore the positive and negative effects caused by social media evolution. We will delve into why these changes occur, and what you as a subscriber can do to make sure these changes have a minimal effect on your business and personal social life. Annually, we do a year in review of our articles. We do this for several reasons. First, we want to make sure we are publishing content that people are hungry for. A lot of people say content is king, but the real fact is that only high-quality relevant content is king. Second, we need to analyze our own marketing (our blog, internet radio and WebTV shows are all part of that mix). This is a prerequisite for any successful business. Third, it's always a good idea to reflect on the year that has just passed. It’s hard to plan where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been. It’s also a good way to get ready for the coming year ahead. This year, several of our articles hit home runs. More so that in some other years. A few were big surprises, others we knew would be hits for sure. So, get ready for a fast and fun rewind of 2017 because, in this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will reflect and expound on the “Best of the Best for Working the Web,” in the year that just passed.

I have been writing prediction articles for several years now and what is surprising is how fast things are evolving. My earlier articles would prognosticate about things two to three years out, and most would come to pass as predicted. Today, new ideas spread so quickly, and the product development cycle is becoming so short that making even short-range predictions are getting a little tricky. Nevertheless, I have spotted several trends in A.I., Cyber Security, Next Gen Tech, IoT, Internet Marketing, Web TV, Social Media and Fake News that will evolve like gangbusters over the next 18 months. In this episode of Working the Web to Win we will explore Hector's 2018 prognostications and more. Every year since the invention of malware, cyber-attacks have escalated. This is especially true during the holiday season. Every October, the U.S. government commemorates National Cyber Security Awareness Month, guided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance. My question is why don’t they declare the whole fourth quarter National Cyber Security Awareness Season instead. During the holidays, cybercriminals are all too aware of how people are distracted by their holiday plans. People become more careless online, especially on social media and this allows cybercriminals to take advantage of them. To make things worse, it’s extremely easy for anyone to acquire hacking and ransomware tools that are easy to deploy, without being a cybercriminal mastermind. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore the latest cyber holiday threats and provide our readers with tips, tools, and resources to counter these holiday Cyber-Grinches. When it comes to using apps to promote a business, the first thing that comes to mind for most business owners is Google Adwords or Facebook. That’s because Google has 71% plus of the search traffic and Facebook has more than 2 billion users. They also have an advertiser interface that’s is relatively easy to use. Whereas with other apps, like Yelp, you must claim your business, then you have to contact an account representative and do more labor to spend money on ads. This goes for other apps as well.

Around 2010 internet marketing had reached a crossroads where what had once worked for getting found in Search had reached a tipping point. A perfect storm if you will. If you did your research, you’d know that Google had reached Search Engine dominance by partnering with Yahoo in 2000, acquiring key web properties like Blogger (2003) and YouTube (2006) and launching its AdSense platform. Google also fortified its position by acquiring many other useful web properties, tools, and add-ons. Google topped this off by winning the latest browser wars with Chrome, which finally displaced the internet Explorer after it had held the dominant position for over 14 years. Fast forward to 2017, and you have the search engine market, The social Arena, the video arena, the news arena, the blogging market, email marketing, digital press releases and much more. Google has stated that you must provide the best user experience for success.. This is also true in the social arenas in blogging and any other venue on the web. In this episode of Working the Web to Win we will dissect the current state of Search Marketing, discuss it’s must-have elements, its segmented arenas and provide the reader with tips and techniques to achieve search marketing success. In 2012 when Carl proposed that we create an Internet radio show to improve website ranking and traffic, I told him I though it wasn’t a good idea. In fact, I was opposed to the effort altogether. Reluctantly, I went along and before we knew it, our fledgling Blog Talk Radio show went from zero to hero where in four months one of our shows had 30,000 downloads in a 10 days span. Since then our blog, which is what we use as the outline for each show, has grown to more than 1,380,000-page views and the radio show has expanded to simulcasting on YouTube and Facebook. Our episodes have been downloaded several hundred thousand times since the show's inception, and we have even been able to develop a formula for producing a cost-effective show for our clients. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore how we have turned our internet broascasting marketing efforts into a traffic and rank generating machine for fun and profi. So, tune into blog talk radio and turn on your podcast recorder as we lay out the path for internet broadcasting for fun and profit.

In today’s competitive business world, you need an edge to stay ahead of the competition. More importantly, you need to be able to give prospects a reason to choose you versus others in your industry. More often than not, the reason you choose a company or professional is their reputation. Trust becomes the determining factor. Think about it. Most people do their shopping with companies they trust. They buy products because those products have proven themselves to meet the consumers' standards of quality and performance. Sure, people will buy something just on price, but if that product doesn’t meet or exceed their expectations, they will never buy that product again. The same is true of professionals and the services provider industry as well. Trust trumps all other factors short of budgetary means. In this week’s Blog Talk Radio Show episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore how addressing a business’s credibility or a professional reputation can make a significant difference in how easy they close business. We will look at eight often overlooked elements of their reputation that can sway a prospect towards or away from your product or services, without you even realizing it. So tune in and share this link with your friends so that they can learn the eight secrets to building a great online reputation.

I know that most of us value time and money the most, (I’m excluding love and our survival needs for food, water and air because they are subjects for another story). Many value money because it is a universal means of exchanging goods and services. But, there is one thing that everyone values more than anything else, and that is time. Time can only be spent once. This brings me to my point. Today’s broadcast TV market is shrinking, not because people are addicted to their digital devices. They are switching to watching their digital devices because it saves them time. It also provides them a better way to control and allocate their time and money. It puts them in charge of what, when and how they watch TV! In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore why, when and how to cut the cable and satellite TV cord so that you can watch TV anytime you want, (and save some money along the way). So, put down your remote and get your scissors out so that you too can cut the cord and watch digital TV on your own terms. Several years ago, a friend asked me, ‘how do you know who to follow,” after I told him that I was engaged in social media development and marketing. The questions he asked was a good one because, at that time, most of what I was doing in the social media arena was new to everyone. In fact, we were in an era of discovery, testing untried techniques and methods. I quickly realized how similar social media development was to word of mouth networking, so it dawned on me to apply word of mouth marketing principles to the new social media phenomena. This application proved to be fruitful, but it did not address the need for rules for who to connect with and who to avoid. If you're engaged in social media development, you have to connect with people. Social media means following and unfollowing people, groups and businesses. This happens on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Google+, LinkedIn, and when you blog (whether it’s on WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr or another platform). In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore why we need to use social media to connect with others, who we need to be following, (making connections) and who we need to avoid (undesirables). So tune in and turn on your friends to this weeks live show were we take a deep dive into who to follow and why, along with how to avoid following those pesky undesirables.
Over the last 7 years I have been writing and talking about the latest trend in online marketing and advertising. Many things have happened and changes are as constant as change itself. What doesn’t seem to change is that the Fact that major Marketing players keep trying to stack the deck of profits in their favor without regard for the return on investment that they are providing businesses for their marketing dollars. Recently, Google made lots of negative headlines because they were serving up ads on inappropriate YouTube channels for some of their biggest corporate clients. It’s easy to understand the big sensational headlines when a larger corporation pulls millions in ad money from the likes of Google or Facebook. However, little is said when millions of small company’s websites take it on the chin because Google changes its search algorithm or Facebook policy flip flops canceling ads running during mid campaigns. If you consider how these advertising giants wield absolute control over how business is advertised, you quickly start to realize that you must have a plan B in place if you want to succeed. In this episode of Working the Web to win, we will explore the current state of online advertising. We will ask the question, “how business can protect themselves from the profit whims these mega advertising giants wield?” We will provide the step needed to make sure you have a good plan B in place so that you will get your money’s worth.
A couple of years ago I was asked by the Clay County Chamber to put together a panel of social media experts so that we could put on a Clay Chamber University program to help its members better understand and utilize social networking. The panel had five members who contributed Topics, questions and answer to be used during the program. A moderator would bring up the questions and each panelist would then elaborate with their perspective and answer. Members of the audience could also ask questions and receive answers directly from the panel. The program was a huge success and it prompted me to later write my hit article called; Social Media Tips, Tricks and Best Practices from the Pros. This article remains very popular and can be very useful for anyone trying to maximize their return on social media marketing. In this article, I will be expanding my coverage and focus to help non-profits maximize their return. So get ready to share these tips tricks and best practices with your favorite charity and non-profit organizations as we explore how non-profits can get the most out of social media marketing.

Shoot - Ready - Aim - That's the most common method, small businesses use when implementing their marketing. A common scenario goes something like this. An advertising sales rep will pitch them on some marketing, and if they like what they hear, they make the buy. Often the sales rep will be armed with some statistics that have little relevance to the business’ target market. But in most cases, the small business owner doesn’t fully understand what the sales rep is telling them. And to avoid looking uneducated, they avoid asking the hard questions. To make matters worse, most small businesses don’t know what their target market is, what their unique strengths are, what their weakness are and who their real competition is. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore all these questions and more as we tackle the all so common problem of Shoot, Ready, Aim. Luna will be in sharp focus this year as the US experiences a total eclipse and 5 teams try to land on the Moon. On August 21, citizens in the US from California to the Carolinas will be able to see a total solar eclipse for the first time since 1979. If that isn't cause enough for full Moon madness, five international teams will also be trying to fly to the Moon this year in an attempt to claim the Google Lunar X Prize worth $20 million. Of course, it could cost nearly that much to try to build and fly a robotic rover to the Moon. Worse is the December 31, 2017 deadline set by Google to claim the prize. So, it's anybody's guess whether any of these modern day lunatics will succeed.

Police in Bentonville, Arkansas are turning to Amazon to help prosecute a suspected murderer. Their witness is not who you might think. In fact, it's not a who at all. James Andrew Bates was charged with first-degree murder after a man named Victor Collins was found dead in Bates’ hot tub in November 2015. As part of their investigation, the police seized his Amazon Echo, from which they extracted data. While the police are not divulging exactly what data was recovered, it is possible that they included audio recordings from the device. Since many homes have "smart devices" such as smart TVs, web-enabled video devices, and AI-equipped appliances, will this case establish a precedent that opens the floodgates to other uses of technology that can be turned into witnesses for the prosecution?

Having been a science major in college, I like to think that the world has order. It follows a set of rules that work within a set of parameters. In physics, we have Laws (some of which you may have heard of). For example; the First Law of Thermodynamic’s which basically states that - An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. And the Third Law of Thermodynamics. It states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. I will also look at the Law of Entropy as I believe it is relevant and is easily understood. This article shows how the Laws of Physics can viewed as part of the Social Dynamic Laws of Marketing. No, this show is not a science lesson - it's will reflect how things work in marketing – especially the laws that pertain to getting started, being consistent and creating impact. So tune in and turn on to this weeks WorkingtheWebtoWin and learn how the laws of physics relate to marketing.

Technically a brand is two different things. First It is a mark of ownership. Like in the cowboy days when they branded a steer with a mark to prove the cattle was theirs. Second, it is a reputation of the owner or business entity. Large companies with long standings and well-entrenched reputations have brands! Small unestablished or only local companies have logos and local reputations. In other words, the symbol (i.e. the Logo or brand) comes to represent the owner or business over time. Locally, however, their logo doesn’t represent the owners or the businesses name, it’s the owner’s or businesses reputation. In the cowboy days, it was the owner's name of the cattle. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we will explore in the ins and outs of branding. We will answer how you can really brand your business, how to get customers to spread your brand, what effect changes to logos have when you should make a logo change and other important questions that surround branding in general. I am often asked, how can you guarantee marketing success, when few if anyone else in your business can’t (or won’t)? I answer with a resounding three! We understand that marketing success is built in three phases. Creating and planning the message, testing the message and optimizing for profits. Most novice marketers will only implement one or two of the phases, which is why most fail or only have partial success. If a company wants the maximum return on their marketing dollars, they need to implement all three phases in order to achieve success. The only other way to obtain success is by luck or the grace of God. So if you want to learn how to maximize your return from your marketing, stay tuned and turn on this week’s episode of Working the Web to Win and learn how to achieve Guaranteed Marketing Success.

It's not only that - Google has a very futuristic long view of things. When they purchase YouTube for an unheard of amount of money - a lot of people said they were crazy. Boy were they wrong. Google announced creation Google Glass in 2012 as a prototype and then a released a limited edition of the actual product in 2013 call the Glass Explorer (for the tidy sum of 1500 big ones). This, like many google launches caused and uproar both positive and negative. The product even gave us new words like "glasshole" for people who recorded your video you without permission and expanded the definition of what wearable computing could be. Today Glass-like eyewear is much more widespread and contrary to the beliefs of many Glass Explore did not go aways. You know, it never ceases to amaze me how often business people use oxymoronic statements as part of their marketing philosophy. We often accept this kind of language as normal speech. Take for example “least effort most gained”. The reality is, the only time that the “least effort could produce the most gained is if more effort was misplaced. There are hundreds of these phrases - for example; clearly misunderstood, act naturally, seriously funny, definite maybe and many more. Not all the statements in this category are necessarily moronic. My favorite sayings come from a much-beloved character who played baseball for the Yankees as well as managing the Yankees and the Mets. His name is Yogi Berra, and many of the sayings that came out of his mouth were just as profound as they were oxymoronic. I often think about some of his sayings when people ask me a question about their marketing strategies. In this episode of Working the Web to Win, we are am going to use a number of Yogi’s quotes to make important points regarding how business people often go astray when making their marketing plans. So tune in and hold that dial while we take a look at my favorite Yogi-isms and how I see them relating to marketing strategy. Cybercrime has jumped off the big screen of Hollywood and onto the small screen of business computer users from coast to coast. Unlike the Hollywood blockbusters, in most cases the hero doesn’t arrive in the nick of time to save the day. Given the international nature of cybercrime, even the FBI is all but helpless to put a stop to this growing scourge, no matter how big the headlines produced by data breaches get. In recent years, high-profile cyberattacks on companies such as Target, Home Depot, Sony and Sears have alerted the public to the growing threat of cybercrime. Criminals are endlessly creative when it comes to monetizing breaches. They exploit easily guessed or re-used passwords, lost or stolen laptops and human error. More and more, they trick people into giving them access to their machines, followed by a demand for money. Hackers sometimes breach a computer and send fraudulent emails directing others—in the name of the breached victim—to pay them a ransom. More often, they sell the purloined financial information to the highest bidder. Who loses? Not the banks but rather companies with minimal internal controls and weak security protocols. Many business owners are still operating under a false sense of cyber security. Businesses have to ask themselves “what cyber exposures exist for me?”
If you think George Orwell’s novel “1984” was farfetched, think again. Everything from Doublespeak to the Thought Police is alive and well in our every more wired world. Big Brother is being employed by everybody from the government to big business and cybercriminals worldwide. Everything from many intersections, to some homes and every shopping mall in the world sports video cameras. More than 1 million camera-toting drones currently fly the friendly skies. What’s even more alarming is that our homes and businesses are rapidly becoming listening posts bristling with bugging devices galore that we have invited to share our space. In this week's episode, we will take a look at where this technology is headed, as well as what it means to the land of the free.
We speak to lots of Entrepreneurs and startup organizations and invariably many have the same miss conception about what successful companies do when starting a new venture. Many of these companies come to us with ideas that have a good starting point, but are not fully fledged out. Often these entrepreneurs haven't taken the time to work through their ideas. More importantly, they have not bounced their ideas off of a seasoned professional who could give them advice that is not based on selling them a final product or service. Most newbies try and get their advice via "free consultation" from vendors who are there to sell them something (like marketing). In this week’s episode of Working the Web to Win we will explore seven common marketing mistakes many entrepreneurs make when starting a new venture or launching a new product. The episode will provide clear examples and solutions so the listener will be armed with knowledge to avoid these common mistakes. So tune in and turn on to this week’s episode and avoid the 7 common mistakes that entrepreneurs make.
Facebook gets caught filtering conservative blogs and news items from their timeline. Google is now caught skewing and filtering political search in an attempt to favor Hillary Clinton. When you Google something, you expect Google to provide you the best results based on your intended search criteria. After all, they have publicly stated that this is their goal! However, that's just not happening. When you post something on Facebook, you want your friends, family and co-workers to see the post. You don't expect Facebook to decide who gets to see and share your post. Yet Facebook has decided that we can't make decisions for ourselves. Your Facebook timeline is not yours to control. Your posts aren’t being displayed according to your wishes. That's just not happening! These companies are deciding what you, your friends, family and coworkers are allowed to see! To make matters worse, it's very hard to part the curtains on these big companies, but there is proof that they are lying, cheating and trying to deceive us. More importantly, they are saying that they know what we want to say, what we want to see, what's best for our country and they are definitely trying to influence the election in a very deceptive way. In this episode or Working the Web to Win, we will delve into the deceptive ways that Internet Giants Google and Facebook are manipulating the public as if we were puppets on their strings. So tune in and turn on to this week's episode of Working the Web to Win and learn how Google and Facebook now control the Horizontal and Vertical of your Internet Life.

Google is gaga about artificial intelligence. So much so that their search engine is powered by it. More importantly, Google has been experimenting with AI to see if machines can make art. It all started when the world's most popular search engine tried to teach a machine to understand images. An early version of Google's RankBrain AI was tasked with trying to make sense of the images it encountered. Hoping to find a workaround for one of the search engine’s biggest lapses, which makes search engine spiders blind to images and videos, the attempt resulted in hilarity when Google’s creation began to morph images as it tried to make sense of queries posed about them, becoming a kind of PC Picasso. Instead of throwing in the towel, Google's research team became enthralled with the idea of machine artistry. Their latest development, named Project Magenta, is attempting to teach a machine to play the piano.

Just when you thought online privacy couldn't get any worst, technology developers unveiled software that lets your smartphone listen in on your TV viewing habits. Called SilverPush, this Android-based third-party app uses your smartphone to listen for television shows in the background, in turn providing third-party advertisers with information on users' viewing habits. This caused the FTC to send letters to 12 developers known to be using SilverPush. While the developer of SilverPush claims that the software isn't yet in use in the US, the feds warned them that its use in American apps could be illegal and the developers held liable if users weren't made aware of the data being collected. More troubling is the fact that this kind of technology could open a Pandora's Box by making our homes, business and vehicles veritable listening stations as other IoT devices could easily be converted into spies. If you want to find out more about the remifications and countermeasures you need to consider, check out this episode of Working the Web to Win. Your privacy could depend on it.

Until recently, a virus was something you contracted by clicking on a link or an ad that then had you download a piece of malicious code otherwise known as malware. If you were lucky, your sytem's anti-malware programs picked it up and eliminated it before it could do any real harm. If you were not, then your harddrive was corrupted to the point where it either slowed to a crawl or froze up completely. So news of a new virus would seem to be no news at all. Except that in this case, Android phones in Europe have been infected via text messaging with a new virus called Mazar. While the virus has not yet spread across the Atlantic, it is only a matter of time. If you want to have safe text, tune into this episode of Working the Web to Win.

Look up the word "Troll" and you will find two meanings. The first is the Scandinavian legend concerning hideous creatures whose life revolves aroung vexing humans and who turn into stone upon contact with sunlight. The other definition is to fish using a hook and line that is pulled through the water. Trolling on the Internet combines the worst of these two meanings, by creating hideous comments and untruths about human beings that are then pulled along by the sheer momentum of social media. In short, online trolling is the most vile form of yellow journalism yet devised. Unlike traditional yellow journalism that can be dealt with in court by overturning the slander and broadcasting the facts, online trolling can be difficult to defeat since the slander can snowball to take on a life of its own. In a number of cases, trolling has been employed to cow or even stifle a journalist's right to free speech. It has also transmogrified free speech into an insidious form of cyberbullying that threatens to undermine the rights of anyone who goes against the grain. If you want to protect your freedom and keep from being hooked by these vile creatures, shine a light by making sure you tune into this episode of Working the Web to Win. you can also read about on our blog at this link - http://workingthewebtowin.blogspot.com/2016/02/are-trolls-taking-control-of-internet.html

You may not have noticed it, but artificial intelligence, otherwise known as AI, has been sending its tendrils slowly but surely onto the World Wide Web. At first, its foray onto the Internet was tenuous at best and comical at worst when Google created an AI that it turned loose to try and make sens of the images it found online. Hoping to find a workaround for one of the search engine's biggest lapses, which causes search engine spiders to be totally blind to both images and videos, the attempt resulted in hilarity when its creation began morphing images as it tried to make sense of queries posed about them. Undeterred, Google recently turned it's AI loose on everything from it's digital assistant called Google Now, to search engine duties, the latter of which has been dubbed RankBrain. Micorsoft has also jumped into the fray with it own AI called Cortana which daybuied with the launch of Windows 10. Not to be left out of the AI race, Facebook too has started employing AI, calling theirs M. Whatever you call it, the bottom line is that AI will soon worm its way into every part of the Internet, which is already integrated into every facet of our society. Whether this is good or bad, only time will tell, but what is a certainty is that sooner or later there won't be a device on the planet that won't have a brain of its own.

Social Networks are the fastest evolving media in the world. In less than a dozen years, it has gone from relative obscurity to internet dominance. Today, any business that ignores social media does so at its own peril. Social networking and Social media have become integral to internet marketing, business and social communications. Businesses can’t continue to provide poor customer service and expect to keep it under wraps. Today social networks allow consumers to spread good or bad news at the speed of the internet. Businesses have to be proactive using social networks to stay ahead of the competition and any bad news that may escape into the social “network-sphere”. This show will cover the 15 most important reasons why every business needs to proactively be using social media to win the hearts and minds of the consuming public. Everyone online knows how important positive reviews and recommendations can be. They can spell the difference between getting the business or not. The problem is, a cottage industry has popped up that vends fake reviews. Just like the black hat firms that once spawned link farms, these faux reviews might make your listing shine in the short term only to tar your company over the long haul. Even worse for firms who offer to post dubious reviews for a little bit of folding green, the powers that be are beginning to not only take notice, but take action. Case in point: E-tail giant Amazon has just initiated a lawsuit against 1,000 freelancers that sell face reviews. How long will it be before other industry titans like Google follow suit? Will companies who post fictitious reviews wind up tarred with the same brush? Who knows, but one thing is for sure...There's a lot at stake when it's fake.
Since its inception the US government has tried to put stop online gambling in the US. Yet it has failed to slow, much less stop its spread. With the emergence of paid fantasy football sites which advertise their games on TV such as Fan Duel, not to mention New Jersey casinos ofering legalized online casino gaming, is it any wonder that this industry is anything but a bad bet to developers and operators alike? Still, the feds persist in doing everything in their power to put the brakes on one of the most lucrative online industries ever created. In this episode of Working the Web to Win we will look at the evolution and valuation of the online casino industry. Place your bets!
Social Networks are nothing new. They have become conduits to tell the world about you. But lately a number of nets have begun displaying alarming attributes that are downright antisocial. Case in point: A new social networking app called Peeple, which has been described as "Yelp for people," is slated to launch in November. It will employ a star system that will allow you to rate anyone you know, including ex-spouses, former bosses, your friends and neighbors. The spectre of being categorized like a side of beef has many people up in arms. Caitlin Dewey, a reporter for the Washington Post summed up her Peeple angst this way, "Imagine every interaction you’ve ever had suddenly being open to the scrutiny of the Internet public." Is social networking going to transmogrify into a place where all our dirty laundry is going to be publicly aired? I mean it's one thing to have a rating system for businesses. That concept is designed to protect consumers from underhanded business practices. But it's another to encourage people to publicly air their grievances. What's the next hot online app going to be named, "DateHate, where you can regail the public with the details of blind dates gone bad?" When social networking turns antisocial, the very premise of the genre goes from informative to creepy.

Amazon has just opened a Wearable Technology Store in the UK that offers more than 100 different wearable devices including activity trackers, smart watches, smart glasses and wearable cameras. Google last Wednesday rolled out their Android Wear operating system for smartwatch developers. This says nothing of the hundreds of companies who have also leapt into the emerging wearables market. Carl and I decided to create our own Internet radio show because we felt it would be a good way to build organic search ranking. Our reasoning was based on three specific principles. First and foremost, quality content is king for search engine ranking. Second, it had to include timely, unique, useful and actionable content to post to our blog and social nets. This would distinguish us from our competition. And third, doing a regular weekly Internet radio would require weekly research. This would force us to stay current in our industry, which would help us produce a quality content-driven show.
In the beginning, we knew we didn't have any show sponsors. We knew it would take time to build an audiance, content for our efforts to have an effect on our Google Search position. Fast forward to today and we have a strong Page One organic position in the top three search engines. Our blog talk radio show is a hit with our clients and the show's blog receives more than 5,000 page views a month. To top it off, all are now monetized.
This episode will impart how we achieved this success. So get ready to rake some notes and learn how to make money with the Internet radio and podcast.

When it comes to your business' reputation, the emperor wears no clothes online. What I mean by that is on the Internet most people will decide whether they do business with you before ever setting foot inside your place of business. More and more consumers and savvy businesspeople check you out in a number of ways online. They prowl Google Local, Yahoo Localm Angie's List, Ripoff Report and YouTube as well as a myriad of other sites in search of reviews and testimonials. The problem with most businesses is that they do not have an efective mechanism to cultivate positive reviews. As a result, the only thing that shows up online are negative reviews. Worse still is the fact that cagey competitors can undermine your business by posting negative reviews without your even knowing about it...ubil it is too late So if you hope to find a way to make reputation management work for you in this all too wired world, tune into this episode.
If you think that cellphone-speak is an arcane corruption of the english language, you will appreciate this episode where we cover how cyber babble got it start and how it continues to proliferate online. Ever since the first woncs started noodling around with computer code there has been a disconnect between the way they communicate with one another and the Queen's English. As different as the language was back in Shakespeare's day to the present idiom, the question is one of whether cyber babble is just a flash in the pan, or whether it represents a true evolution in our mother tongue. So if you don;t know a serp from an alt tag, this this is the episode for you. omg lol
What is Net Neutrality and how could its loss rock the world as you know it? Way back in 1995, when the Internet was young, the rules were established that guaranteed nobody could have undue influence over the speed at which information was disseminated. What this meant to everyone online was that the big multinational conglomerates, which already had a stranglehold on the radio and TV airwaves wouldn't be allowed to monopolize cyberspace. So from 1995 to the present, the Internet had one speed limit for all. Online businesses both big and small could prosper. However, recent events by a number of cable conglomerates are threatening the way in which we all surf the web -- and not for the better. If you value your ability to work and play online, tune into this episode where we'll tell you how the loss of net neutrality could rock your world. And what -- if anything -- you can do about it.
If you've been working the web for any length of time, then you know the search engines frown on what is known as "Black Hat" techniques. This technology has been used to exploit search engine algorithms since the first search engines appeared. The reason black hatting used to be popular was because it could move your website onto Page 1 in a hurry. Before the turn of the century, black hatting was practically a requirement, since the practice was so prevalent. However, during the past few years, search engine operators have designed their spiders to search and destroy anyone employing black hat techniques. In fact, the past half dozen updates on Google have been designed specifically to crack down sites that were using these techniques. This has resulted in a number of sites being either delisted or even black listed. The problem is that most people still don't understand where the line in the sand has been drawn regarding black hat practices and technology. So in this episode we're going to show you who is wearing a black hat on the Wild Wild Web. We'll also review some of the more common black hat-like techniques that can get you into trouble so you'll know to avoid doing them.
They call the Internet the World Wide Web for a reason. That's because it's the one medium that can put your products and services in front of a global audience. That's the good news. The bad news? Most small to mid-sized businesses still restrict their sales to their nation of origin. Due to language and cultural differences, shipping regulations, customs requirements, tariffs and other bureaucratic red tape, many companies restrict the size of their potential market. If you're looking for ways to expand your business globally, tune into this episode as we discuss what it takes to go global.
January 10, 2010. A date that lives in infamy in the minds of cyber security experts. That was the day Google and a number of other hi-tech firms announced they'd been hacked by the Chinese. It was also the day the CEO of McAfee, one of the world's most popular antivirus brands, admitted its software had failed to detect the attacks. In the ongoing cat and mouse game of cyber security, this is not all that unusual. It's common knowledge that as soon as one security hole is plugged and another piece of malware is defeated, then yet another rears its ugly head. With the number of organized hacking rings and government sponsored cyber warfare units springing up worldwide, are we quickly coming to the point in time where it's nearly impossible to defend our digital assets? More importantly, if multinational corporations and major banking systems are being attacked with impunity, what chance does the average citizen have of being able to secure their data? Does a different kind of online security system need to be developed in order to prevent a digital Pearl Harbor?
Does the title of this week's episode creep you out? Good, because more and more intimate personal information is available online about each and every one of us than is "healthy." Worse still is that's it's all too easy to become a victim of cyberstalking. That's because most of us disseminate far too much personal information on social nets, in chatrooms, and via photo and video sharing services. It's also far too easy to get the vast majority of us to volunteer even more intimate details regarding our religious and political affiliations, income, sexual orientation, and health-related issues. Worst of all, there are companies and cybercriminals that profit from this glut of easily obtained information. The result? We're all putting our personal and financial futures at risk. During this episode we'll show you how easy it is to glean reams of information about nearly anyone -- and importantly -- what you need to do to keep yourself from getting caught with your pants down. And if that doesn't creep you out, I don't know what will.
One of the many things that has always made our country great is our population has always had dreamers, tinkerers and inventors. The Internet itself is proof positive of the power of American ingenuity. There are millions of people with great ideas for new products and services. The one thing they all have in common is there is a big difference between drawing an idea on a napkin and actually bringing your invention to fruition and the marketplace. On this week's episode, we'll show all of you budding inventors how the web can help your quest to become a successful inventor/entrepreneur. Everything from crowd funding, to angel investors, to online marketing will be covered so that you, too, can hitch your wagon to the online money train. With us will be guests who have experience in raising money, who offer inventor's resources, or who have made the big time online with their innovative product and/or services.

If you’re in business today, you hear that being on the internet matters. It’s the new yellow pages of our world. You'll also hear pundits spout the importance of search engine ranking and how “if your website isn’t ranking high on Google, Yahoo and Bing" your business won’t survive. Well, I’m here to tell you that this is a bold face lie. Ranking high on Google or any search engine is not as important as ranking high for what your company does. What’s really important is that you rank high for the specific key words and phrases related to your core business. On top of that, getting on page one of Google or any search engine is only half the battle. (You also need to be able to convert this traffic into sales.) Add to this the fact that there are now dozens of other ways to be found on the internet. So, that brings us to the real question. What really matters online? How about targeting your ideal audience, how about keeping a great reputation and how about converting visitors when they visit. In this episode, we will discuss many of the alternative ways you can be found on the internet and more importantly, how to convert those visitors into customers even if your website is not found on page 1 of Google search.

This is due in large part to the digital revolution that was spawned by the emergence of the Internet less than 20 years ago. Now in an attempt to stave off extinction, most newspaper editors are embracing the web in order to create a unique fusion of digital and print that they hope will keep them alive and kicking in the twenty-first century. During today's episode we will explore the changes that are taking place and we will interview several players in the world of newsprint.

Everywhere you look online there are cutting edge technologies and devices that are promising to revolutionize the way we work the web. Everything from smartwatches to computerized glasses are all the rage right now, along with all manner of wearable devices. Some of these technologies may indeed prove to be game changers, producing a sea change that will leave more mundane technologies in their wake. Others will wind up in the hi-tech bone heap. Either way, as changes come at us faster and faster, we need to find a way to deal with technological extinction, or as I like to call it, "Survival of the fastest."

You have all heard about the hacking of big box retailer Target with the resulting loss of 40 million credit card numbers. However, what you may not be aware of is the fact the FBI is warning companies that deal in terabytes of consumer data that 2014 is shaping up to be a year fraught with peril. Many large companies are expected to be systematically targeted by international hacker collectives. In fact, a number of other companies and countries revealed that their data had been compromised to some degree in 2013, including such notables as Neiman Marcus, as well retailers in Germany and South Korea.
What makes these breaches particularly galling is not only the scopes of the penetration, but also the fact that hackers are able to blatantly offer sophisticated hacking tools for sale on the open market. Sources believe that the Target security breach was perpetrated by hackers who used malware purchased from a pair of Russian teens.
The real danger is the fact that not only is credit card information contained in these systems, but also is a tidal wave of other sensitive consumer information. Since data mining has become so endemic and identity theft has become such a problem for so many consumers, the question comes down to whether companies whom collect this information without your consent can be held liable if they are unable to protect it?
When the Internet was young there was enthusiasm about being able to connect to people and places worldwide. As the worldwide web grew, so did the amount of people and things connected to it. Somewhere during the past couple of years the sheer amount of devices that have become web-enabled has gotten to the point where there are more things connected to the Internet than people. As everyone from appliance designers to auto makers and even clothing manufacturers begin connecting more and more things to the web, all of us need to realize that everything we do, everyplace we go, as well as how we live, shop, play and learn are going to be fundamentally changed due to this technology. The question we are going to attempt to answer during this episode is, "Are You Ready for the Internet of Everything?"
Have you noticed that everywhere you look CCTV cameras are popping up? They are located on buildings, at intersections and even dangling beneath helicopters and UAVs. Not only is it getting to the point where you can no longer venture outdoors without being surveilled, but the technology now exists where clothing, car doors and walls become transparent. So if you want to know who could be watching you and how you can fight back, tune in, turn on and tweet.

So stay tuned to Carl and Hector as they bring you the new year's technological advances that will shape our world.

You may have missed this on the TV news, but on dec. 20-21 seventeen teams duked it out at the DARPA Robotics Challenge for a chance to win $2 million. Sporting monikers like RoboSimian, Valkerie and Atlas, these droids looked something like a cross between a tinkertoy and the Terminator. Like the T1, these bots have articulated arms and legs. This is vital to the DARPA contest, since these droids are designed for search and rescue. Contest rules state that they must be able to climb ladders, open doors and turn valves. Only the best will go onto the finals in 2014.
During this episode we will also discuss the quantum leap that has recently taken place in everything from domestic robots to industrial bots and aerial drones. So if you want to know where this technology is headed before it comes knocking at your door, tun into this episode of Working the Web to Win.

Most people think of Google as a search engine, albeit an all powerful and superwealthy search engine. But what most people don't take into consideration is that Google has become much, much more. Today, Google's ever expanding business empire includes such things as smartphones and tablet pcs (Android), the next wave in wearable computers (Glass), self-driving car technology, a direct-to-consumer genetic testing company and even such far out technology as giant telecommunication blimps. So it should come as no surprise that Google is always looking to be on the cutting edge of emerging industries. In September, Google launched its latest venture, a medical company named Calico that is tasked with taking on death itself. That a couple of billionaires should be interested in extending their pampered life is not so unusual. Billionaire John Sperline spent $4 million to clone his pet dog, Missy. But cloning a creature isn't the same thing as keeping one alive. It's more like xeroxing one. Some people think Larry Page and Sergei Brin have gone off the deep end on this one. But with a war chest of $45 billion at the ready, if anyone can take a crack at the Grim Reaper, it's Google. Of course, the endeavor could wind up as other ill-fated examples of what the smartest guys in the room did in such industries as housing, investing and banking. Only time and a few billion dollars will tell.
When it comes to revolutionizing the way in which we perceive and operate in the world as we know it, the Internet has been one of the most important inventions ever created. And like many inventions it was the result of a lot of labor by a number of talented people. A number of those innovators went onto become Internet icons. What we are going to talk about in this episode is the fact that while many of the people that gave rise to the web were indeed some of the smartest guys in the room, the fact is that not everything they created were overnight sensations. In fact, some of their follow up concepts were either concepts that were way out there or outright flops. So if you want to see where the web has come from and potentially where it is headed, tune into this week's episode.
You've heard of the Internet, but did you know it had a darkside? The FBI, DEA, IRS and US Customs recently caused the world's largest black market site called Silk Road to go dark by using their own nefarious tactics against them. The site, which conducted billions of dollars in business using an online currency known as bitcoins, was shut down on October 1 and its alleged operator Ross Ulbricht was arrested in San Francisco. Silk Road was to the underworld what Amazon is to the rest of us. The black market storefront offered everything from cocaine to fake passports. With nearly a million customers and $1.2 billion in sales, the site also served up many other illicit services including those of forgers, computer hackers and hit men. Speaking of hit men, Ulbricht is also under indictment forattempting to have a former employee murdered, So if you want to see how the feds brought down the biggest online underworld kingpin then tune into this episode of Working the Web to Win.

If you were around in the mid 1970's or have been trolling the DVD backlist on Netflix then you are undoubtedly familiar with astronaut Steve Austin, played by Lee Majors. In the pilot to the four year series, Major Austin is horribly injured in the crash of an experimental aircraft only to awaken as a multiple amputee. Offered hope in an experimental operation that cost six million dollars, both legs, his right arm and his left eye are replaced with bionic implants that give him superhuman abilities. After the operation, he is able to run at speeds of 60 mph, his eyy has zoom capability and his right arm has superhuman strength. While currentl technology can not replicate all of the abilities of Colonel Austin, at least not yet, there are a number of "bionic" devices that have been able to allow paraplegics to walk, the deaf to hear, and the blind to see. Plus there are legions of "enhanced humans" who via technology are able to do and see things that no ordinary human being can. In this episode of Working the Web to Win we will explore off-the-shelf technology and look at the next wave of bionic technology that is just over the horizon.
Have your heard about the little bird that is sending many websites into a tailspin? It's called Hummingbird and it reprresents Google's latest search engine algorithm modification. Unlike many algorithm tweaks, Hummingbird is a humdinger that represents the most dramatic alteration to the way in which the world's most popular search engine ranks sites since Google's last major overhaul three years ago called Caffeine. While Caffeine's intent was as a wakeup call to black hat marketers, Hummingbird is intended to introduce a whole new way of conducting content searches. So if you want your website to fly with the eagles, tune into this episode or risk bcoming a dead duck.
