The name of blog was chosen for two reasons: 1.  Similar to the contestants who put forth much effort to perform in the TV hit show Dancing With the Stars, those with bipolar and their effort put forth are “stars” every day of their lives to survive the hurt from people who don’t understand them and the deep pain from the illness itself. 2.  Similar to dance, bipolar has many different rhythms such as chemical, sleep, and mood rhythms which all effect behavior. Dr. Cathy Reimers, Ph.D., psychologist in New Jersey, and co-host Jennifer Russello, parent in New Jersey, address the serious epidemic of heroin in our schools and the easy access American kids have to this highly addictive and deadly drug.  We will discuss how kids are getting heroin and what happens after they have tried it.  Heroin almost always leads to addiction.  Once addicted to heroin, these youths psychologically travel an express train to places they would never go and engage in stealing, lying, prostitution, burglary, suicide, and even killing … there is no end to what they will do.  In an effort to keep “the high” going, these kids start “shooting up” (injecting heroin into their veins with a needle) and they can’t stop. Interestingly, heroin is not limited to inner cities and urban areas; the hurricane of heroin is blowing over small towns across America, creating a “perfect family storm” not to be reckoned with. The “perfect family storm of alcoholism” is a vicious cycle that begins with one single sip for the alcoholic family member and only ends in “recovery” or continued treatment; however, the pain that the family endures goes deeper than “rock bottom” and may never end.

Last week we reviewed the stats: there have been 9 school shootings already in 2014, and the total number of school shootings in the past 3 years is a frightening 73.  The numbers are growing rapidly each year, with the United States consistently reporting the highest number of school shootings in the world. As the number of incidents continues to go up, so do the fatalities. Small children are being killed in school, as suddenly shooters are entering elementary schools.  In the past, these shootings were more common in middle and high schools; but no one is safe anymore. We talked about the profile of the shooters and how many of them were white males with a vendetta; some had been bullied, some had an intense interest in violent gaming and we discovered that most shootings had been planned well in advance.  Join us in part two as we explore how school shootings are related to the failed mental health system in our country, the effects of psychiatric drugs in adolescents, the use of illegal drugs by kids and more. Finding factors to blame, rightfully or not, is almost the easy part: poor parenting, easy access to guns, less value for the sanctity of life, violent video games, a broken mental health system. Stopping the violence isn’t. Join us as we talk about what parents and educators can do in the war to keep our schools and kids safe.
