A podcast about travel, science and raucous rants. Stories from the road while travelling on a longboard or on a sailboat. Maybe stories that I have been told by other travelers. Sometimes also thoughts and opinions that pass my mind while I'm letting it wander.
Finally hauled out! After weeks of waiting we are finally in the yard and start the refit of our dream exhibition sailboat. So lets have an overview over the work that we have done so far and check a few jobs in detail.
We are stuck for a few weeks in Gran Canaria and get to know the local sailing community. And then it finally works out and we cast our lines of for our fantastic second sail to the south tip of Gran Canaria.
In this episode I share the story of the first sail we ever did on TONLEI. The passage from Lanzarote to Gran Canaria, just 115 sea miles. We are joined on the boat by two friends, see dolphins and sea turtles, and are taken away by the amazing sailing performance of our boat.
One of the most productive boat work weeks we had recently! We progressed really far in welding the waterthight door and constructing the window frames. And at the same time we met a ton of interesting people from different boaty lifestyles!
Boat tour! Come aboard! We take you on a tour through Tonlei's layout, show you her deck and cabin and talk about a few of her amazing features. Maybe you can see her in your head and form your own "dream boat"!
The adventure continues! Come and sail around the world with us! The adventure continues after a short break with the exciting news tgat we bought a boat. A big steel expedition sailboat that will serve us as a base for future adventures! Feeling super stoked!
We are going sailing again! This time on the Blue Pearl, a beautifull steel ketch that belongs to a pirate named Wolfgang. We are joining him with Thomas and Brianna, a mixture of crew that leads to shenanigans and lots of laughs. We sail through strong winds and near calms, and we anchor in front of old hippy communes. Also: bioluminescence!
This was one of the best skates we ever did. We ditched the backpacks for this one by leaving them on a conveniently located campsite. Hitchiked up the mountain as far as the road was going, to 2300m altitude. And then longboarded down for glorious 44km. First through volcanic landscapes, then pine forest, then oak forest. All the time with fantastic views over the sea. We are absolutely stoked!!!
This episode is about two fantastic hikes that we did on Teneriffa. Both are in parts in this ancient laurisilva cloud forests. They look amazing, with moss and lychens hanging from the trees everywhere. We were expecting to see dinosaurs stomping through these forests behind every second bend... What a stunning island.
Kyra and Robert are hanging out on Fuerteventura, waiting for things to happen. In the meantime the volcanic landscape grows on them and the get the chance to hop in an ice bath to cool down. -The events in this episode happened somewhen in autumn 2021.-
Robert goes sailing again. This time it's a RYA coastal skipper course to get the qualifications and experience as a captain! And he gets recruited as crew for a crossing to Teneriffa on an absolutely enormous catamaran! Exciting!
Robert is still longboarding on Fuerteventura. Its still hot, and so much up and downhills. This is some seriously challenging long distance longboarding! 91km in total!
Robert goes on a solo adventure. The plan is to longboard across Fuerteventura from North to South. But because there are so many cars at the coast, the route through the mountains will be taken. So many uphills ans downhills, so much sun.
The title says it all. Kyra and Robert continue to longboard accross Lanzarote. The face windy uphills, sleep on naked beaches, see beautifull landscapes, meet nice people, and somehow, at one place, the police gets involved. Tune in!
Kyra and Robert start longboarding on Lanzarote. The motivation is high, the backpacks heavy, and the roadsurface smooth. Kilometer after kilometer they push on and discover the inland beauty of this Atlantik island!
The crew leaves the boat amd makes their way to Famara Beach. Kyra gets her first surf lesson and looses a bit of a tooth!
Some live recordings from the hike on La Graciosa. I get lost and get stunned by the stars. Overlaps with the regular episode content wise.
The boat anchors at La Graciosa. Kyra and Robert need to work on the boat as part of the crewing deal. Robert gets lost at night on La Graciosa! Also: stingrays!
Whilst crossing to the Canary Islands, I was playing around with my new audio recorder. Just recorded some noises and some stories along the way. This is a collection of them. It spans from the seco d day of sailing until we arrive at La Graciosa.
Second half of our crossing to the Canary Islands. Snacks & naps, seasickness, and beautiful anchorages!
Kyra and Robert are crossing from Portugal to the Canary Islands, on a catamaran. The first day proves eventfull, with lots of wind and an orca scare...
