We would like to welcome you to the ARTSCAPE Podcast, a new monthly podcast from SFU Woodward's Cultural Programs. Featuring our host Michael Boucher, the Director of Cultural Programs and Partnerships / 149 Arts, as he sits down to talk with artists, choreographers and other individuals from the arts community. He will explore how the arts allows us to create, engage and inspire! We invite you to be part of the conversation.
Piña is inspired by Artistic Director Ralph Escamillan’s identity as a first-generation Canadian-born Filipinx. Examining how the body carries history and ancestry, this vibrant new creation considers the parallels between the physicality of the diaspora experience, and piña – a traditional Philippine fibre made from pineapple leaves. It investigates the many facets and cultural significance of the delicate yet enduring textile, in an anthropological journey through the body. Incorporating traditional folk dance, history and design, Piña brings together an all-Philippine cast including four dynamic performers, an original score by K!mmortal, and a multidisciplinary artistic team to celebrate cultural resilience. Graveyards and Gardens is an unforgettable performance installation conceived, created and performed by composer Caroline Shaw and choreographer Vanessa Goodman. Co-presented with Music on Main. A stage is filled with lights and cables, plants and turntables. Things begin an array of sounds—some come from tape decks, some from a record player, some from old Edison wax recordings. The primary objective of this not-for-profit event is to support Education without Borders (EwB).EwB’s mandate is to provide educational opportunities and facilities to disadvantaged regions of South Africa and Canada. After their successful 6th edition in Montreal and Ottawa this past June, The Lebanese Film Festival in Canada (LFFC) is proud to announce its Vancouver edition premiering this September 2022 in partnership with SFU Woodward’s Cultural Programs. The event will include 5 feature films, 2 documentaries, 22 short films, an animation section, Discussions, talks, interviews as well as live streaming through the festival’s website and other platforms. Movie lovers will be able to meet with filmmakers, actors, and directors joining us from Canada, USA, and Lebanon. Most of the films screened will have Canadian or world premieres and will address important real-world themes and issues, including commentary on civil wars and immigration.

The 20th edition of the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival (VLAFF) will take place from August 25 - September 4, 2022, in hybrid format presenting more than 60 films from 17 countries in over 12 languages (always with English subtitles), being one of the largest and longest running Latin American film festivals in North America.
Founded in 2003, the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival is a registered charitable organization with the mission to provide a forum for the promotion and exhibition of Latin American cinema in Vancouver. This 11-day annual festival encourages dialogue among cultures and supports and celebrates the art of contemporary Latin American, Latin-Canadian, and Indigenous filmmaking.

The 18-piece Hard Rubber Orchestra will unmask its greatest hits from three decades of music plus brand new work in a concert at SFU Woodward’s Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre set for Saturday, June 18, 2022. The concert will feature the premiere of new commissioned work by cellist and composer Peggy Lee (with visuals by Melissa Hubert) and by rising star Vancouver composer Gabriella Yorke as well as hits from the past 32 years; selections from Kenny Wheeler’s Suite for Hard Rubber Orchestra commissioned in 2013 and its iconic Tribute to King Crimson.
This exceptional celebration of an extraordinary ensemble will include rarely seen videos from its 32-year history.

DOXA Documentary Film Festival and SFUW present Sarah Ouazzani in this episode of ARTSCAPE.

DOXA Documentary Film Festival, Western Canada’s largest documentary film festival, returns to present a hybrid 21st edition, screening in theatres and streaming online May 5 through May 15, 2022. In a return to form, DOXA will screen its roster of crucial and thought-provoking documentaries in theatrical venues across the city, bringing filmmakers and audiences together for a long-awaited communal cinema experience. And for folks who prefer to view from the comfort of their own homes, most festival films will be available to stream online for select durations between festival dates.
The 21st annual DOXA Documentary Film Festival will showcase a total of 55 features and mid-lengths, 24 short films, both pre-recorded and live Q+As, as well as Industry events and multiple opportunities for filmmakers, audiences and industry professionals to connect, both virtually and in person. Films will be available to stream Canada-wide, through DOXA’s Eventive online platform. In-person screenings will take place at SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts. In-person Industry events will be held at SFU’s World Arts Centre.
