Traci Neal’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Growing up, she took on various roles that epitomized servanthood—cleaning public toilets, assisting in daycare centers, supporting preschool and kindergarten classrooms, and working as a cashier. While these jobs were far from glamorous, they laid the foundation for her profound empathy and resilience.

Grief is a suffocating cloak, a relentless storm that rages within, tearing at the very fabric of your being. It's a profound emptiness, a hollow echo where laughter and joy once resided. It's the ache in your chest that steals your breath, the lump in your throat that chokes back tears. Grief is the unwelcome guest that lingers, casting a shadow over every aspect of your life.

In the relentless pursuit of societal success, many of us find ourselves ensnared in a cycle of monotonous labor and delayed gratification. Trapped on the hedonic treadmill, we labor tirelessly, believing that true happiness lies just beyond the next purchase or promotion. This misguided belief blinds us to the beauty of the present moment, compelling us to sacrifice our dreams and aspirations in favor of a life deemed safe and conventional.
Amidst this ceaseless chase, we encounter Michael O'Brien, a successful businessman and devoted father. His life, once defined by 65-hour workweeks and the relentless demands of corporate leadership, took an unexpected turn on a fateful day. While cycling, he collided head-on with an SUV, an accident that should have claimed his life. Yet, against all odds, Michael survived, emerging from the wreckage with a profound shift in perspective. He was reborn, not as a victim, but as an intentional architect of his own life.

Keepsake Chronicles, the new podcast from Fragile Moments and Not Today Media is a journey into the hearts and minds of people, unearthing the stories woven into the fabric of their most treasured possessions. We believe that keepsakes aren't just trinkets but tangible echoes of our experiences, emotions, and connections.
Through interviews, written submissions, and of course photos and videos, the Keepsake Chronicles will capture the essence of these special items. We'll explore:
The power of objects: How a seemingly ordinary item can hold immense significance.
Memories unearthed: How keepsakes act as triggers, transporting us back to vivid moments in time.
The stories we hold: How these objects connect to the broader tapestry of our lives and relationships.

When we think about unhealthy workplaces and their impact on mental health, we often think about stress and burnout. These are serious problems deserving care! But in the past several years I’ve noticed another serious problem that gets less attention: workplace trauma.
Sure, we know that military personnel and first responders like firefighters experience trauma on the job—putting oneself in harm's way is a job requirement.
But when and how does trauma show up for other working professionals?
This week I want you to meet Dee Hoch. Dee has spent the last 12 years working on education, being a mom, and wife, and trying to advance her career. She burnt myself out and left her previous career to start a new one. Dee personally knows the struggles of being psychologically unsafe and is dedicated to preventing workplace trauma.

Learning to skillfully navigate emotions means you’re able to fully dive into emotions – even intense emotions – and still act with integrity. You act from your highest values, rather than reacting impulsively to the emotion.
Div Manickam has spent a few years navigating the emotional journey and learning that there are more emotions than just crying. She’s learning how to accept the now, be fully present, and not worry about the past or the future (things I don’t control).
Div has realized she was getting overwhelmed with everything that’s coming in the next few months. So, she’s beginning to understand the importance of taking it one step at a time.

The Western view on grief is that it is something that you passively experience over about a year after a loved one dies. You are supposed to progress from a starting phase, continue through subsequent levels, and, by the end, your grief should be complete. Once you’ve neatly gone through each distinct stage, you can carry on with life.
In actuality, grief is a participation sport that has no rules, no linear timeline, and again…no expiration date.
This week I want you to meet Matt Gilhooly. Someone who had to face the tragic loss of his mother at the age of 8 and decades later the loss of his grandmother. Leaving him to ask that same question, am I failing at grieving? And then ultimately turning that thought into a shift in his own life, one he soon realized we all go through.

It’s obvious why someone might be tempted to turn to a communicator in order to talk to their beloved animal, even if that person is otherwise reasonable. It’s terribly hard to share a life with a close friend with whom you are unable to speak. It would be nice to find out, at least, a few basic things. Are they okay? Are they happy? Do they like you? Would they have rather had the green giraffe toy with a squeaky butt, or are they okay with the purple elephant toy with the squeaky trunk? Do they feel safe? Do they know how much you love them? Are they happy? Are they happy? Please, god, just tell me this—are they happy?
Jennifer Etzwiler, our storyteller this week, had those same questions and not only wanted those answers for herself, but she wanted to provide those answers for others who had lost a dear pet.

Sometimes, abuse is silent. Sometimes, it comes packaged in a pretty face and seemingly romantic gestures. Sometimes, it presents itself as a winding ride that makes the victim second guess if they are truly being mistreated, or if it’s all in their head.
Abuse can take on so many different forms, but it is always very, very lonely as this week’s storyteller, Natasha Dumelie, will tell you.

Chapter Summaries:
(0:00:00) - Impact of Bullying (13 Minutes)
We explore the devastating impact of bullying and cyberbullying on mental health, as well as the importance of providing support for teenagers and young adults dealing with these issues. Nhat Tran shares his personal experiences with bullying, depression, and anxiety, emphasizing that even though bullying may not be as visible as it once was, it is still a prevalent issue. Cyberbullying, in particular, has become increasingly common on social media platforms like YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok, and Facebook. The effects of bullying can include depression, anxiety, eating disorders, suicidal thoughts, and social isolation.
(0:12:44) - Friendship and Trauma (10 Minutes)
Throughout this chapter, we delve into the damaging effects of bullying on one's mental health, self-esteem, and overall well-being. By sharing a personal journey of being bullied, we learn how isolating and traumatic these experiences can be. The loss of identity, connection with friends, and passion for activities such as rugby are all consequences of the bullying endured. The importance of speaking up and seeking support is emphasized, as a single conversation with a friend significantly improved the speaker's mental health and outlook on life.
(0:22:22) - The Power of Speaking Out (8 Minutes)
We examine the power of speaking up and not allowing small problems to escalate into bigger ones. As we discuss personal experiences with bullying and toxic workplace environments, it becomes clear that staying silent only prolongs the suffering and allows the issues to continue. By sharing stories of overcoming these challenges and restoring mental well-being, we emphasize the importance of communication and standing up against negativity in our lives. Remember, "it's weak not to speak" and silence can indeed be deadly'
(0:30:46) - The Power of Speaking Up (12 Minutes)
In this chapter, we discuss the power of trust and the importance of having a support system when dealing with bullying and mental health issues. By sharing personal experiences and stories, we explore how speaking up and seeking help from trusted individuals can lead to healing and growth. Additionally, we discuss the significance of small moments and conversations in making a positive impact on someone's life. Finally, we touch on the importance of addressing bullying both in person...

This is Joel's story from the “What’s Story Podcast?” so that you can learn more about him and hear why I’m thrilled to have him be here.

We all love a good train wreck. Many people — including psychiatrists — think hoarders are obsessive-compulsive. It's even listed that way in the bible of psychiatric disorders, the DSM V.
But this isn't necessarily true.

People from all over the world have been sending in questions, and it turns out that most of us are dealing with the same kinds of things–from breakups and loss to work pressure, racism to gender, dealing with parents to dealing with social media–and want to talk more about them.
So ask me anything...really.
Whatever you think our generation needs to have conversations about when it comes to what weighs on us and causes our mental health struggles.
Fragile Moments is all about practical life advice for sustainable mental clarity all being told through questions and stories submitted by ordinary people just trying to survive.
Sometimes I’ll combine research with my own thoughts, and other times I’ll bring in an expert for a deep dive chat.
I’m just a human being like you, not an expert, I just happen to think we should talk more.
Join me every other Monday beginning August 1, 2022 as we bring the narrative surrounding mental illness one step closer to a place of real understanding and real healing.
