Last year in December, I made a video that I haven't watched since then. In it, I talk about my experience as a daughter in law. I think I had underestimated the toll of joining a new family, especially when their traditions are different from what you grew up knowing and doing for the better part of your life.

Gone are their anxieties of how he would fit into the world. All they are looking forward to now is simple things like him holding his neck up by himself.

The last thing Angela thought she would be at 22 is a mother. Motherhood forced her to grow up fast as her son would need her. Soon after his birth, she found herself single and had to reconcile with the fact that her life took a path different than what she envisioned for herself.

In her story, she talks about the reality faced by many single mothers trying to build a family for their kids in a world that doesn't necessarily welcome them.

Food is such big part of our motherhood journey. What you eat can prepare your body to conceive. Figuring out what to eat when you are pregnant can be all consuming. Is eating for two really a thing? Let's not even talk about all the things we are expected to eat or not eat once the baby comes.

I sit down with a nutritionist and learn or unlearn a lot of ideas I had around food and motherhood.

I hope this episode turns out to be a useful resource to you too.

For Mother's Day this year, I feature someone very special, my mother.

I have an interesting relationship with my mother. We talk almost every day, we have little secrets between us but one thing I always say is that we are different. I probably say this because I do not really know her. All I know about her life is the little she has shared with me over the years. I know she had a tough upbringing, with no relationship with her parents. I know losing my father eight years ago has made her make many decisions, some of which I struggle a lot with.

This episode is the first in an exercise I am going through to get to really know her. It is inspired by a book I came across a couple of weeks back that has questions on topics that span the life of your mother, and it allows you to sit down with her and get to write down her story.

For this episode, my mother picked to share her parenting journey. In it, she talks about how she thought she would be a single mum, about almost getting into trouble while trying to curb a craving, about having major spinal surgery when she was pregnant with my sister and try struggles of being a working mum in a world that didn't provide too much care for new mothers.

The second part of this conversation will be out next week.

We always hear of fathers taking a step back  and leaving most of the parental responsibility to the mother, especially in a broken relationship, but rarely do we hear of mother making the same choice. In this story, Cynthia shares on how she had to make a tough choice of leaving her son with his father for almost a year, as she worked on making herself mentally, financially and emotionally stable to be able to raise her son on her own.

As you can imagine, this wasn't a popular decision and she faced  pushback from everyone around her, especially her son's father.

Her story is eye opening,  and shares the importance of sharing parental responsibility equally between both parents.

Jane always wanted to become a mother. She wanted to become a mother so bad that she visited many doctors to make sure that all was right for her to conceive. Why was this important for her? Well, she knew motherhood wasn't a guarantee, but her biggest driving force was so that she can show that a mother doesn't have to be brutal, like the mother she grew up with.

In this episode, we listen to Linda who looks back at her four year journey as a mother.

She found out that she was pregnant unexpectedly, and like many mothers out there, abortion came to mind. This might be a trigger for some, so please have that in mind as you listen to this episode.

In spite of having an  'easy'  but lonely pregnancy, her recovery journey proved to be tougher than she expected. In addition to that, she had to help her son find his voice in a world that told him he could not speak.

Part two of her story  will be released in the next episode.

I talk about sharing a recording I made about experiencing burnout, but when I was editing this episode, I listened back to it and I sounded so sad. I felt triggered sharing it. For now, let it sit pretty in my laptop until I feel like listening to it and sharing it, if necessary.

Thanks for listening to this episode and we will be back to regular programming by listening to another mama in the next episode!
