- 14th Amendment is the heart of the definition of slavery
- The U.S. did not intend for people of color to be included in that definition of citizenship.
- This is prior to the 14th amendment
- Person of color is defined as African peoples and Native Peoples
- Citizenship was undefined and allowed racism to flourish.
- Citizenship was an idea embedded in the constitution but never a reality
- Although the 13th Amendment was ratified, it did not grant rights to free slaves
- Just because you free does not mean you are a citizen
- John Bingham and radical Republicans wanted to expand citizenship in the constitution and crafted 14th Amendment.

We discuss the complex history of Black Slavery and Indian Slave Masters. Ms. Krauthamer’s book Black Slaves, Indian Masters: Slavery, Emancipation, and Citizenship in the Native American South is the first full-length study of chattel slavery and the lives of enslaved people in the Choctaw and Chickasaw Indian nations. The book reveals the centrality of slavery and racial ideology in Native leaders’ definitions of Indian sovereignty, as well as in U.S. federal policy towards Indian peoples and territory.
Special Guest: Barbara Krauthamer Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, Professor of History at University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Listen to our discussion about the Dred Scott v. Sampson, Emancipation Proclamation and 13th Amendment. We provide the timeline of events that catapulted the Civil War. Enslaved people of Indian nations did not fall under the provisions of the 13th Amendment. The 13th Amendment also brought on new questions about black people’s freedom. This issue also became a key point in negotiating the treaties with the Five Tribes.
