Fundamentalism, modernism, scholasticism, and postmodernism are bad ways of interpreting the Bible.
The canonical or covenantal or worldview-ish way is the only right way.

Dear friends and supporters:
The “CultureChange” e-newsletter will be shorter than usual this week and next, and this week it’s a podcast addressing one of the greatest cultural problems Christianity faces, a problem that developed within the very bosom of Christianity. You won’t want to miss it. And if you enjoy it, please forward it to others.
Later this morning or afternoon, Sharon and I plan to drive into Canada to spend several days with our dear son Richard and daughter-in-law Samantha. Our last visit with them was pre-Covid, and I ask you to pray that we will be able to conform to all of the painstaking Covid protocols and that there will be no problem getting into Canada and getting back into the United States.
Thank you for your prayers and donations.
Yours for the Lord of the cosmoscope,
Founder & President, Center for Cultural Leadership

Dear friends and supporters,
For a while I’ll be alternating the conventional CultureChange e-newsletter with an audio newsletter like this one, which is a sort of podcast. That should offer appeal both for those who prefer reading and for those who prefer listening — or both.
Today’s topic is one I addressed from a different angle many years ago in the old Chalcedon Report and that was reprinted here. I’ve wanted to revisit and revise it many times, and today’s post fulfills that desire.
If you benefit from it, why not share it?

Pious Unbelief is Still Unbelief
Personal
We’re just putting finishing touches on plans to visit our son Richard and his wife Samantha in British Columbia in early October. We haven’t seen them since 2019, but the border is now open, though the numerous hoops through which we must jump to get there are onerous, and there’s still no guarantee we’ll get into Canada.
Richard earned his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of British Columbia in May 2020, and he’s soon to be ordained to the diaconate in the conservative Anglican Church in North America. He also teaches philosophy at Corpus Christi College. Sam is a digital designer and artist. She regularly gets commissions to paint in various media. Here’s a sample of one of her lush watercolors from several years ago:
Please pray with us that we can get into Canada to see our precious son and daughter-in-law.
I hope next week to write on “Statism as Toleration.”

The Chief Cultural Battlefield of Our Time is Sexual
"Acute and astringent, forthright and grim, this extended tract for the times calls Christians and churches to face the fact that the sexual disorder which America currently legitimates, radically and ruinously undermining marriage and family life, is a revolutionary tipping point in cultural apostasy, and to recant appropriately. Dr. Sandlin should be listened to; his case is, alas, compelling.“
J. I. Packer
Our broad thinking about life doesn’t just shape our view of human sexuality. Our view of human sexuality shapes the rest of our thinking. Western society’s sexual views and practices over the last few decades haven’t changed so dramatically only because the prominent worldview of our society has changed; our society has changed because its sexual worldview has changed.
This book is about why and how that change came about, how injurious it has been to our culture, and what Christians can do to reverse it. A distinctively Christian strategy for reversing the sexual revolution and its worldview is a restoration of a full-orbed, biblical faith in every aspect of thought and life.

Dear friends and supporters,
I’ve been wanting for weeks to address the topic of the two leading, competing views of Christian spirituality in history, and have finally been able to get around to it. I hope you benefit from it. If so, please share it with others.
Please keep reading the brief but important information below.

Sharon and I will be headed out of town to spend this holiday weekend with longtime friends. I pray just now that you’ll enjoy a memorable time with your family.
Next week’s tentative title for CultureChange is “The Fundamentalist Temptation.”
Heading into the fall, please consider a donation to CCL. We’re a 22-year-old, explicitly Christian think tank dedicated to influencing Christians to influence all of culture in a distinctly Christian way. By God’s grace, we’ve been successful. Please keep us forging ahead.
Thank you deeply for your consideration.

The Church Desperately Needs a Creational Worldview
We sometimes hear the well-meaning exhortation, “Christianity doesn’t start with the Bible, but with Jesus Christ.” This might very well be true, but Christians must embrace biblical truth anterior to Christianity, and that is creation as the Bible describes it. Put another way: the Bible is bigger than Christianity. We will not understand his person and work in their greater depths if we bypass creation. This is a small book about not bypassing creation. It’s a book about thinking in creational categories, and purging contra-creational categories that infect our culture and, in too many cases, our churches.

Dear friends and supporters,
Sharon and I have been in Pennsylvania this past week, so I decided that an audio e-newsletter would be most efficient today.
It’s hard to interpret the modern West in our Coronavirus times if you lack a basic grasp of this week’s topic.
More new content is listed below.
May God bless each of you.

Dear friends and supporters:
Sharon and I are on the road this week, so I’ve composed an audio e-newsletter addressing a crucial problem — subversive soteriology. It’s about 15 minutes long, and I hope you’ll take the time to listen.
Positing good works as a means of justification is apostate moralism. Refusing to posit good works as an inescapable fruit of justification is apostate antinomianism.
I hope next week to write on “Law and Gospel, Simply Explained.”
On the wider cultural front, it’s gratifying to observe (finally) some pushback against cancel culture, Critical Race Theory, and Cultural Marxism in both the church and politics. More on this later.
Personal
This past Ascension Sunday, we were blessed to encounter quite by accident ( = providence) the remarkable Desert Christ Park in Twentynine Palms, CA, sculptures by a godly evangelical fashioned throughout the 1950’s. We were moved to praise and tears by his work, true to the Word of God.
The Sermon on the Mount
The Woman at the Well
Praying in the Garden as his disciples sleep
The empty tomb
The ascending Lord
Thank you for your friendship and support.

The Christian life is a battle, and battles presuppose enemies. The chief enemy of Christians is Satan (and demonic spirits aligned with him [Eph. 6:12]), but a leading strategy in thwarting God’s earthly kingdom is his enlisting humans to assist him. This diabolical strategy started in Eden.
The Bible assumes that the true Faith will constantly be under attack in the sinful world and in the church. This doesn’t mean that we should invent enemies when there are none. There are enemies aplenty already.
