There is a whole science around mental cognition and how we think, learn, remember, reason, and focus attention.  These are pretty critical brain functions and without them, our lives would be much more difficult to navigate.  That’s why the health and wellness industry is booming with products and services to help sustain and enhance our cognitive thinking abilities.  Beside the products and services, there are some schools of thought where various activities and exercises are promoted; from breathing to meditation, to music therapy.  Today I’d like to focus on the foods that we can add to our daily regimen to enhance cognitive ability over time.

Affirmations are simply declarations or pronouncements of a belief.  If you believe that you will have a good day.  To affirm that is to say, ‘I’m going to have a good day’.  And if you believe that you’re going to falter in pursuit of a goal, you may say, “This is going to be a pain in my patushka.”  Psychology Today writes that “there is value in positive affirmations, in that our subconscious mind plays a major role in the actualization of our lives and the manifestation of our desires. In other words, what we believe about ourselves at a subconscious level, can have a significant impact on the outcome of events. I know.  Interesting stuff.  Professionals believe that when your ears hear your voice, your mind gets into gear.

A former Nike executive, Lee Weinstein authored a book called ``Write, Open, Act: An Intentional Life Planning Workbook," that enables people to build a visual Intentional Life Plan in just a few hours. In his book Weinstein espoused that we should ask ourselves 4 questions; What are Your Life's Wishes, What is Your Timeline, How can you Turn Your Timeline Into an Actionable Plan, What must you do to Stick with the Plan? I found this to be very validating in that I need a plan for everything.  So it was refreshing to see that I’m not alone in my compulsion.  Today I’d like to explore the role of planning when it comes to having success in life.

Oooowee.  I have been looking forward to doing this episode.  Why? It’s a topic that I think will be life changing for so many of us.  This discussion is all about having your own set of values to guide your decisions.  That’s what I call independent thinking.  Many of us are influenced by the social norms around us.  We drive the cars that are popular, we wear the styles that are trending (that’s me), and we adopt the views of the populous as they are defined for us by the media and other power structures.  And how’s that working out for us?  I’d argue that there’s room for greater independent thinking.  But sometimes it’s hard to break away from the pack.

In part one of Passion People episode we talked with our guest, Heather Cavitt, about the value of passion and how it shows up on people.  If you haven’t listened in, it’s a great episode.  Heather describes how passion gives each of us a unique edge in that it creates an energy to allow us to achieve pretty awe inspiring things.  So I wanted to come back and go a bit deeper into how to recognize and embrace passion in our lives.  Heather is back to help us wade these waters.

Have you ever met someone who seemed to have a magnetism or what some might call charisma?  Those are the people who seem to light up a room when they enter it.  Or if you hear them at a party they always have a really interesting story to tell about some experience they had.  I call these the Passion People.  They come in all shapes and sizes.  The funny thing is that they come from all backgrounds, religions, cultures.  These are the people whose opinions we want to hear.  And who tend to influence the crowd.  Let’s get it straight.  That description doesn’t apply to everyone.  I guess that’s also why it’s so unique and recognizable.

Obstacles come in many shapes and sizes.  Sometimes there are external influences that introduce obstacles.  And Sometimes the battle is from within.

By silencing the external noise we can focus on what’s ahead.  That noise may be coming from naysayers, or even truth tellers.  None the less.  It’s noise just the same if it becomes a distraction.  By contrast, there is the voice within you that is there to act as a guide.  Our better angels offer affirmation that we’re on the right track and gives that nudge that feels like a green light to keep going.

Today’s guest knows something about how to be guided by that intuition.  She has traversed this journey with a keen sense of self and of the world around.  Her journey hasn’t always been a bed of roses.  But I’m a fan of how she has landed flat footed and has mastered how to make lemonade and to make that lemonade sweet each time.

Throughout this life we encounter thousands of people and over time most of us come to learn that all of the people we encounter are not trustworthy.  And I don’t think there will be any pushback if I were to say that having a trusted friend, partner, or coworker is valuable.  Super valuable yet rare.  There’s a saying that goes, ‘in order to have a friend you must first show yourself friendly’.  Well today I’m going to turn that on its head and say, ‘in order to have trust filled experiences, you must first build trust.  You.  Not the other guy.  And that’s not always an easy thing to take on.  So I’ve grabbed a fella who I know does this very well.

The Chinese philosopher Lao Tsu said, “He who knows others is wise.  He who knows himself is empowered”.  This proverb is a recognized statement about the value of being self aware.  Self awareness is the first step to self governance.  In other words, how can you regulate emotions that you don’t fully understand.  It’s really difficult.  Self awareness is all about how well we’re able to not only identify and name your emotions and their triggers, but also the ability to understand their root cause.  This is a big thing if you want to have lasting meaningful relationships.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stumbled because I was not prepared to deal with the emotional triggers in my life.  So I’m thrilled to parse through this with a well integrated soul today.

I have heard people say nice things about me through the years.  All my life.  Things like, you’re smart. You speak well.  But I never believed them.  And here’s the funny thing about that.  No matter how much you hear a thing.  If you don’t believe in yourself, there’s no words that will convince you.  I share that because I know I’m not alone in my battle with self-doubt.  I’d like to explore what happens when you actually believe the good things that others say about you.

There has been a great deal of research on the subject of agency.  Agency is all about having or activating the power to act independently and  to make your own choices. Imagine living in a world where you could choose your destiny and you are empowered to act on that vision. I hear you out there.  Yeah, Yolanda.  That’s all pie in the sky.  Is it?  What prevents me from presenting the full expression of myself, my gifts and my talents in the pursuit of my dreams?

It’s been said that people with great passion can make the impossible possible.  If you’ve ever been on the sidelines watching a passionate person go to work, you can relate to that quote. Many of our great leaders have charged their passion as the impetus for that new innovation.  It is passion that has given us breath-taking performances from artisans.  Passion has been at the root of incredible social change.  But those are the big things.  Passion for improving our health and well being can also be what drives us to better food choices.  We see passion from parents who are driven by a strong desire to see their children excel.  In short, passion can be a real catalyst in achieving your dreams.

Full transparency.  I was the kid who read the encyclopedia and the LIFE magazine series on the planet earth, and the one on reptiles, and the one on mammals, the whole thing.  It fed my imagination and curiosity of exotic places outside of my community.  It was those books that took me to far away places in my mind. Those books expanded my world view, introduced me to new cultures, and shaped my perspective of both modern and ancient civilization. But that was all in my imagination. Some people explore the world more literally through vacations and pass-time. Some walk, hike, or cycle about the planet, some do luxury vacations, but others go for full-on relaxation. Whatever your pleasure most agree that escaping is a real anecdote to the blues and stresses of life.  And once the madness of these times pass we’ll all be back on the road and vacationing.  With that in mind I’d like to hear more about how to travel the world on a budget.

Okay.  So we all agree that Stephen Covey was on to something when he taught us the value of the 7 habits of highly successful people.  And there’s one thing I’ve learned is to lean in on the gurus.  There’s one aspect of habit building that I’d like to focus in on today and that is how habits become the fuel to greatness or better-ness.

I’m always amazed by those people who seem to have a crystal ball of sorts and can read the tea leaves to the economic and social changes that the rest of us ignore.  You know who I mean.  These are the folks who bought Sony and Disney in the early days.  They somehow have a knack for knowing what will be the next big thing.

Nature versus nurture.  Does that apply to resiliency?  I’ve watched some people carry exhausting burdens for long periods of time with grace.  Then again, I’ve seen some hit the bottom and can’t seem to get up.  Both good people.  Well liked.  Seemingly with all the tools and resources to bounce back.  Yet they experience their life challenges differently.  Why is that?

I’d like to take some time to challenge the notion that all you need is the ‘right attitude and a kick in the butt’ to overcome those life challenges.  Really?  I’m not sure that I buy that simplification of how to get through some of the deep waters of life.  But I know just the right person to ask.

The Six Pillars of self-esteem are living consciously, self-acceptance, self-responsibility, self-assertiveness, living purposefully, and personal integrity. But those attributes are near impossible to achieve if you do not feel safe and valued.  Today I want to focus on how we support and advocate for our children, especially those who have unique needs.  When you find yourself tussling with a huge chaotic institution like the education and health systems, how can you be the best voice on behalf of your child? In the time of COVID, unemployment, violence in the streets, political antics, and polarization how in the world are we supposed to stay focused on achieving our goals and dreams?  So many distractions.  In the midst of this turbulence we can’t throw our hands up and say, “I’ll pursue my dreams when the dust settles”.  No.  That feels like giving in to the unknown.  But how do we remain myopic and driven while the world burning? Brotherhood.  Camaraderie.  Esprit de corps.  These are terms that are used to describe the purpose and value of fraternal orders. Fraternal orders exist mostly to establish a community whereby men of all ages are able to create and nurture lifelong bonds, learn valuable life skills, and serve the broader community.  The one value that I’d like to focus on today is LOYALTY and the role loyalty plays in lifelong relationships. It’s been said that “mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.”  The alliteration that I like to use in describing a mentor is a coach, counselor, cheerleader, and comforter.  No matter how you cut it or slice it, I think we’ll all agree that mentoring is valuable to all involved.  And it pays dividends.  But it ain’t easy.  It takes dedication, persistence, and a giving heart. I don’t know about you but I’m forever seeking knowledge and information.  My curiosity sometimes seems endless.  And as a lifelong learner I’ve come across many great mentors and teachers.  There’s one thing that I found consistent with great mentors and teachers, they love to share knowledge.  They don’t get annoyed when asked a question.  They go out of their way to provide as much detail as it takes.  These are the real masters. And when asked, the master teachers attribute their thirst for knowledge to their desire to always have more to share.  That is what I’d like to discuss today.  The paradox of how the teacher’s gratification is dependent upon the student.

I once heard Jimmy Carter say, in all of his world travels he has concluded that the most oppressed of all the human species is the woman.  Yet Psalm 46:5.  God is within her, she will not fall.  Some translate She will not Fail.  What a paradox.  How is it that the woman is seen as the most oppressed, yet with the help of God she is powerful enough to be able to keep standing under oppression.  That’s power.

Pride by definition isn’t a bad thing.  And neither is confidence.  Yet when in the presence of confident people why do some feel their personal value is being minimized?  Does that mean that your accomplishments should never come up in conversation in deference to others? Guest: Joy Guerin

I’m sure you’re familiar with the adage, ‘if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got’.  It’s no surprise that we all recognize that change is important, but there’s one element that we’d like to focus on today, and that’s the role of new information when inspiring change.

Have you ever felt like things just weren’t falling into place for you and the very things you dream of are crumbling right before your eyes?  I have.  Winston Churchill once said, “Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.”  I can attest to the point of saying that’s easier said than done.

Can I get a witness??!! I’ll be a witness to the fact that experimentation is one of the critical ingredients to innovation.  If you’re listening and you think yourself to be innovative and you’re not up on experimentation….think again.  When it comes to finding that next big thing or just advancing the dreams and visions you have for your life, many experts agree that you’ll want to be a master at experimentation.

In Rachel Hollis’ book Girl Stop Apologizing she talks about the need to give yourself the time to develop the skills and behaviors needed to achieve your goals.  In other words don’t give up on yourself and get down on yourself because of your current state.  Instead, she suggests that we look forward to when you are able to get beyond today.  In other words, her thing is that you may not have the level of confidence yet, or the ability to plan for how you will get that new home or job promotion...yet.  But that doesn’t mean you can’t get there.  It’ll take patience and perseverance to prepare yourself for those next milestones.
