From the age old griots to the Native American storytellers to the stoop uncles who teach the neighborhood boys, teachers have raised generations of thought leaders and change makers.
It took a world health pandemic for everyone to see that teachers are, indeed, essential and should be taken care of. But the world didn’t give us that. So just as always, we have to give ourselves what we are owed.
At the end of the day, the students learn the standards we teach, but where are the lesson plans for our self care? Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mj-seaberry/support

Many educators give everything they have to the people they serve. We know this to be true because we are aware of the impact on educators finances, time and energy, and mental health. As an educator, Dr. MJ Seaberry knows all too well what it feels like to not fully allow all of your identities to show up in the education space. This has previously cost him in many ways. However, during the worldwide pandemic, Dr. Seaberry took time to dive into what self care truly means and how to navigate all the spaces in which we need to take care of ourselves. These include, but are not limited to, family, body, power, mind, spirit, and voice.
In today's episode, hear Dr. Seaberry discuss the importance of family as a grounding tool to anchor yourself during your self care journey. He shares the lessons learned from his grandmother and mother as they join him to discuss what grounds them and how they have remained steadfast in their own journeys to self care.
Scholars, please welcome Mrs. Annie Mae Barnes (Grandmother) and Ms. Bernadette Seaberry (Mother).

The Lesson Plan Podcast is not your ordinary podcast. Here, I am inviting you into my classroom. Here, you don’t need to be perfect. In fact, I want you to let your hair down, take a seat, and work alongside me as we journey towards healing. This healing is for me too. It’s for the dance teacher who stays late in the studio to choreograph to their pain. It’s for the cosmetology teacher who brushes their mistakes away. It’s for the loving uncle who teaches his nieces and nephews how to survive in this world. We are all educators in our own rights.
Check out the Season One Trailer and join us in the classroom as we create lesson plans for self care.
Episode One launches on Sunday, March 7 at 8:00pm.
